Lewis (Louie) Eugene Whetsell, 44, of Maryville passed away Saturday September 27, 2003 at Blount Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include: his parents, Clark and Bertha Whetsell. Sisters: Darlene Jones and husband Jr., Maxine Ihlenfeld and husband Bruce, and Diane Whetsell, Nephews: Methvin and Marty Jones, Niece, Sara Ihlenfeld, Great Niece: Kallie Jones, Great Nephews: Brad and Chad Weeks. He was preceded in death by a special friend: Walt Marlow.
A memorial funeral service will be held at 4:00 P.M., Saturday October 4, 2003 at 202 Hemlock Avenue, Alcoa, TN 37701. Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Home in Maryville.
PAULINE WOODS
Pauline Woods, age 86 of Maryville, passed away Thursday, October 2, 2003, at Blount Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Methodist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Henry E. Woods.
Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Kathryn Woods of Cincinnati, OH; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Kelly and Will Fleming of Boca Raton, FL; great grandson, William Woods Fleming; brothers, James Luther Graves of CA and Rex Graves of Maryville; sisters, Juanita Graves, LaQuita Graves and Minnie Jackson; special friend, Barbara Wycoff; special niece, Stella Long; several nieces and nephews.

RUTH IMOGENE FITZWATER COLE
Ruth Imogene Fitzwater Cole, of Lenoir City, passed away Sunday, September 28, 2003. She was born January 20, 1922 in Watonga, OK to Clarence and Evelyn Fitzwater. She led a very active life: a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, served on parish councils, Diocesan Council of Catholic Woman, U.T. Faculty Wife's Club, Pink Lady at U.T. Hospital, GFWC Lenoir City Women's Club, L.C. Ladies Luncheon Club, an avid bridge play and world traveler. Imogene was a former employee of Nell Bean's in Knoxville, Darter Steel and Allen's Clothing Store in Lenoir City. preceded in death by husband, J. William "Prof" Cole, former U.T. Professor, College of Agriculture.
Survived by daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Allen Sweetser of Knoxville, daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Tim Thurston of Maryville; son and daughter-in-law, John and Mary Cole of Knoxville; grandsons, Jason Thurston, Tim Thurston and wife, Hurley, David Cole, John Cole and wife, Christy; great-granddaughters, Jordan and Jessica Cole; and special friend, Polly Stallard of Lenoir City.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday with a Christian Wake service to be held at 7:30 p.m. at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City. A funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church with Father David Boettner officiating. LONNIE M. MAIDEN
Lonnie M. Maiden, age 52 of Maryville, passed away Monday, September 29, 2003, at U.T. Hospital after a long illness. He was a native of Richmond, IN, he served 16½ years in the USMC . He was an Instructor of Motor Transport and a Vietnam Veteran. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Deborah Maiden of Maryville; one daughter, Yevette Hickey of Knoxville; 2 sons, Corey Maiden and Lonnie Maiden, Jr. both of Knoxville; 8 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; mother, Betty Maiden of Richmond, IN; 3 sisters, Frances Stigleman, Ellen Severance, Rebecca Tompkins all of Richmond, IN; 3 special friends, Donnie Queen, Jesse Robbins and Kristin Roake. Dad will be dearly missed.

CLARA VIOLETE HALL MOORE
Clara Violete Hall Moore age 77 of Maryville, passed away Monday, September 29, 2003 at the family home. preceded in death by husband of 56 years, Harold Ray Moore; daughters, Virginia and Cathy Moore; son, Burton Moore; granddaughter, Loriann Moore; and brother, Carl Hall.
Survivors include daughter, Patsy Potter of Maryville; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Sue Moore, Kenneth and Lois Moore, all of Indiana; 17 grandchildren including granddaughter, Debra Burruss and grandson, Jay Rose, both of Maryville; 25 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Edith Shellenburg of Knoxville and Nettie Moore of White County, TN.; sisters-in-law, Gracie Lee Moore, Colene Moore and Amagene Bell all of Crossville; special nephews, George Martin and Richard Hall both of Clinton; special friend, Leo Sands of Maryville; several other nephews and nieces. WALTER MELVIN MURRAY
Walter Melvin Murray, age 91, of Maryville, TN died Wednesday, September 24, 2003, at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise Pettway Murray. Mr. Murray is survived by close friend Ruth Long; stepson and wife, Charlie and Mary Pettway; stepdaughter, Mary Louise Ferguson; grandson and wife, Will and Susan Ferguson; grandson, Joe Pettway; granddaughter, Diane Rosario; and great-grandchildren, Ben, Sam, Ellie and Abby Ferguson.
Mr. Murray was a graduate of New York University at Morrisville and worked for many years with the Diversey Corporation. He enjoyed boating, handball, and playing the organ. He had been an elder at Sequoyah Hills Church.
A memorial service will be held at Highland Presbyterian Church, Maryville, TN at 2;00 p.m. Sunday, October 5, 2003.
AUDLEY T. PAYNE
Audley T. Payne, age 80, of Sourwood Lake Road, Tellico Plains, passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at Colonial Hills Nursing Center. Member of Druid Hill Baptist Church and a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army. Employed by U.S. Forestry Service.

DENNIS WAYNE EAKINS
Dennis Wayne Eakins, 56, of 966 Royal Court, Lincolnton, N.C., died Sept. 26, 2003, at Lincoln Medical Center.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Warlick Funeral Home Chapel in Lincolnton. Burial will follow at Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Born in Maryville, Tn., he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tommie Eakins. He was a retired major in the U.S. Air Force and was corporate human resources manager for Employment Control Inc. in Lincolnton.
Survivors include his wife Karen Mobley Eakins; son, Thomas Alton Eakins and his wife, Christy, of Chattanooga, Tn.; daughter, Gwendolyn Eakins of Gainsville, Fla; brother, Phillip Eakins, and sister, Anita Headrick, both of Maryville.
MORRIS KENNETH `KEN' LEDFORD
Morris Kenneth 'Ken' Ledford, age 76, formerly of Maryville passed away Sept. 25, 2003, in Gulf Breeze, Fla., due to heart failure.
Mr. Ledford was retired from the U.S. Air Force, a member of the Pensacola Beach Elks Lodge and VFW Lodge 5156 of Maryville, Tn.
He was born in Unaka, N.C., on Nov. 13, 1926, to the late George and Jamimia Ledford. He was preceded in death by brothers, Tom, Bynum and Glen Ledford; sisters, Allie Masingale, Florence Garret, Lucille McKinney and Irene Ervin.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy Carol Woodby Ledford; sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Susan Ledford of Talahassee, Fla., Dale and Susan Ledford of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; son, Kenneth Ray Ledford; daughter, Leslie Munson, both of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Justin Ledford, Travis Munson, Brian Tucker, Sabrina Tucker, Hannah Ledford, and Rachel Ledford; sister, Mary Leroy of Dalton, Ga.; brother-in-law and wife, Bill and Lynn Woodby of Alcoa, Tn.; several very special nephews and nieces.

DONNA B. MACHEN
Donna B. Machen, age 57, of Maryville, passed away Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in Halls.
She is survived by her husband, Michael A. Machen; daughters, Veronica Casciato of Asheville, N.C. and Maureen White of Chattanooga; two grandchildren; mother, Ester Bishop; sister, Cynthia Dunn.
Family and friends will assemble at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at Magnolia cemetery for graveside service. Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at Smith Mortuary, Maryville.
DR. OVIN CASTON RAY
Dr. Ovin Caston Ray, 76, a retired school administrator, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2003, of injuries received in an automobile accident on Interstate 20 East with his wife of 52 years, Loula Zell McKay Ray.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Northside Baptist Church in Clinton. Entombment will follow in the Trinity Mausoleum at Parkway Memorial cemetery in Ridgeland. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Jackson and will resume at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Dr. Ray, , a native of Choctaw County, Mississippi, was born on June 8, 1927, the son of Caston and Emma Ray. He graduated from Weir High School and continued his education, graduating from Holmes Junior College, Mississippi College, Mississippi State University and the University of Southern Mississippi, and completing additional work at the University of Mississippi. His doctoral dissertation was 'Students' Rights vs. School Authority: The New Concept.'
Dr. Ray wrote 'Legal Handbook for School Administrators: A Study in Case Law, ' for the Mississippi School Study Council. He served as a teacher at Noxapater High School from 1948-52 and was chosen superintendent of the Arkabutla Consolidated School District when he was 24 years old and served for five years in that capacity. Dr. Ray served as principal of Hernando School from 1957-1967, principal of Clinton High School from 1967-1972 and assistant superintendent of Clinton Municipal Separate School District until his retirement on Dec. 15, 1989. Dr. Ray served a total of forty-one and one-half years in the public school of the state of Mississippi.
Dr. Ray served as president of the Jackson Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa; president of the Mississippi Association of School Administrators; president of the Board of Directors of the Mississippi Authority for Education Television from 1973-1983, being first appointed to the board by Governor Cliff Finch and then reappointed by Governor William Winter. Dr. Ray was elected by the board to serve as president.
He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation of Public Broadcasting for a number of years. Dr. Ray is listed in Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in American Education, and received an award for outstanding service to the Mississippi Authority for Educational Television. He attended numerous national conferences and conventions and was a participant in Columbia University Superintendents Work Conference in New York in 1979; attended the national Governors Conference at Hilton Head, S.C., in 1986 at the invitation of Governor Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, conference chairman, who made education the theme of the entire governors' conference.
A member of Northside Baptist Church, Dr. Ray was a World War II veteran serving in the United States Navy. In his retirement, Dr. Ray spent most of his time writing, taking care of various business affairs, traveling and talking politics.
Survivors include: a daughter, Gloria Ray Crittenden and her husband, John, formerly of McComb, Miss., both of Maryville, Tn.; two grandchildren, Kelsey Ray Crittendon and Logan Crittendon; a brother, Olon E. Ray and his wife, Ann, of Brandon, Miss.; a sister, Ora Mae Balentine of Weir, Miss.; two nephews, Ray Balentine of Madison and Roy Baleton of Brandon.
