RUBY VEREEN THOMPKINS
Ruby Vereen Thompkins, age 81 of Maryville, passed away Friday, September 7, 2001 at Asbury Acres Health Care Center, after an extended illness. For most of her life she lived in Camden, S.C. where she was a graduate of Camden High School and attended Wateree Baptist Church. Mrs. Thompkins was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Harmon Thompkins; daughter, Betty Ann Woodham; parents, William Bennie Vereen and Mattie Knight Vereen; sister, Helen Louise Haasis and brother, Edward William Vereen.
Survivors included her son and daughter-in-law, William David and Geraldine Davidson Thompkins of Maryville; grandson, William Jeffrey Dunn of Waxhaw, N.C.; two granddaughters, Wendy Lynn Cross and husband, James Mark Cross of Crestview, Florida and Shannon Marie Lamphere of Reading, PA; five great-grandchildren.
Graveside service and interment will be 12:00 noon, Monday, September 10, 2001 at Forest Lawn cemetery in Camden, S.C. with Rev. Everett Reconnu officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wateree Baptist Church, 2024 Haile Street, Camden, S.C. 29020. Smith Mortuary, Maryville in charge of arrangements, 865-983-1000.

DOROTHY M. WOLFE
Dorothy M. Wolfe, age 89 of Maryville died Saturday September 8, 2001 at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville Tennessee. She was a member of the Florida Art Association and was of the Catholic Faith. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Cornelius J. Flynn, and second husband George Wolfe.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Carol Flynn of Maryville, Neil Flynn and Betty Phillips of Mt. Eagle, Tn., and daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Christopher Foster of Conn. Grandchildren, Allison Marielli of Conn., Christopher Foster Jr. of Calif., Thomas P. Flynn of Ft. Myers, Fla., Neil Thomas Flynn of Fla., Mary Beth Flynn of Fla. and stepbrother, Roger Howley.
No services are planned. McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

95, of the Milwaukee Protestant Home, formerly of Maryville, died Thursday, Sept. 6. Arrangements are incomplete. McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

RALPH WILLIAM FOSTER
2001-09-06
Ralph William Foster, age 82, of Clinton passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2001 at his daughter's home in Oak Ridge with his family with him. He served his country with honest and faithful service in World War II, in the United States Army and was discharged December 15, 1944, from the European Theater of Operation, he was with the 99th General Hospital. He rendered care in a surgical and burn ward in France after Normandy. He earned the American Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and other awards. He belonged to the Sheet Metal Workers International Association, Local Union No. 51 for many years. He enjoyed many things that all centered around his family and every Sunday you could find him watching the car races with one of his sons. He faithfully attended North Clinton Baptist Church until his illness. He was a proud father of six children.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lois Foster who died September 23, 1983; parents, Walter Taylor and Ruby Woods Foster; brothers, Leon Foster and Travis Foster; sisters, Ann Blazer and Carolyn Overton; wife's parents, William and Stella Mae Boring of Maryville.
Ralph was born December 8, 1918, in Clarksville, Georgia.
Survivors: daughters, Jackie Walls and husband, David of Oak Ridge, Judy Courtney and husband, Glen of Rogersville, Debbie Walls and husband, Johnny of Nashville; sons, Ralph William Foster, II (Billy) and wife, Brenda of Clinton, Jeffery Foster and wife, Karen of Campbell County, Michael Foster of Clinton, who lived and cared for him until his last illness; grandchildren, Jillanea and Scott Winchester, Joshua and Amanda Walls, Scott Morrell, Christy and John Sharp, Glen Allen and Deanna Courtney, Eric Walls, Stacie Walls and Dave Weems, Joni and Michael Allen, Mindy Foster, Ernie Foster, Tiffiany Foster, Justin Dunaway, Alex Foster, Jessi and Cody Foster; great-grandchildren who always made him smile were Ryan Winchester, Evan Winchester, Rilee Walls, Cobe Walls, Olivia Morrell, John-John Sharp, Trey, Jalen, Cory, Andrew Courtney, Tyler Walls, Brady Walls, Dillon Walls, Cassadie Walls and Sydney Dunaway; devoted sisters, Jean Dishman and husband, Boyd of Clinton, Nell Stair of Karns; sisters-in-law, Edith Foster of Solway, Ruth Foster of Powell; brothers-in-law, Bob Boring and wife, Jerry, Murray Boring and wife, Kathleen, Lester and Paul Boring, all of Maryville; sisters-in-law, Yvonne Davis and husband, Rev. Bill Davis of Maryville, Margaret Boring of Maryville; many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, September 7, 2001 at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with funeral service following at 8:00 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Garvin Walls and Rev. John Shaw officiating. Interment will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Claxton with full military honors being conducted at gravesite by the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to North Clinton Christmas Fund at North Clinton Church, Park Avenue, Clinton, TN 37716 or to Covenant Hospice of Oak Ridge who gave their love and support to him. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home of Clinton in charge of all arrangements.

ROSCOE J. HOWARD
Roscoe J. Howard, age 79 of Greenback, died Tuesday, September 4, 2001, at Ft. Sanders, Loudon. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Julie Howard; sisters, Nellie Coleman and Nancy Starrett; brothers, Charles, Sherman, Pless, and Miles.
Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law, Vick and Judy Howard of Greenback; stepdaughter, Anita June Oliver of Loudon; sister, Hettie Lea Bookout of Madisonville; brother, Dutch Howard of Greenback; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Dallas Howard of Greenback.
Family and friends will meet at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Pine Grove cemetery for a graveside service with Rev. Melvin Reagan officiating.

NELLIE B. RHYNE
Nellie B. Rhyne, age 88 of Maryville, died Tuesday, August 21, 2001, at Blount Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Carson Island Baptist Church in Monroe County and was preceded in death by her first husband, Rowe D. Beavers and daughter, Evangeline Beavers.
Survivors include husband, Rev. J. Wright Rhyne; stepson, Jay W. Rhyne, Jr.; stepdaughter, Helen Johnsrude; 6 step grandsons; 11 step great-grandchildren; nephew, Dennis Pearson; one niece.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 8, 2001, at Carson Island Baptist Church, Highway 72 E. Monroe County, with Rev. Tyson McKeehan and Rev. Charlie Ensor officiating.

WILLIAM F. (BILL) ROBERTS, JR.
William F. (Bill) Roberts, Jr. 74, of Monarch Beach, California, completed his journey in this life on August 19, 2001, and is now abiding with our Heavenly Father. Bill was born June 17, 1927, in Maryville, Tennessee and was a graduate of Maryville High School, class of 1945. He served his country as a Marine during WWII. Bill moved to California after retiring from 40 years of service with Hughes Tool Company.
His survivors include his wife, Bette of Monarch Beach, California; his mother, Lucy Roberts of Maryville, Tennessee; children and spouses, Craig and Angie Roberts of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Brent and Sue Roberts of Gilbert, Arizona, Chad Roberts of 'Brookwood' Brookshire, Texas, Brad and Vicki Jones of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Pam and Wes Bradford of Los Alamos, New Mexico; grandchildren, Amanda, Rikki and Ashley Roberts, Kyle Roberts, Zack and Emily Bradford; great-granddaughter, Morgan Thomas; sisters and husbands, Flora M. (Bob) Johnson, Edna and Cleo Whaley, Virginia and Jim Cox, Jim and Betty Estes; special friends, Milburn and Johnnie Waters and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, William F. Roberts, Sr.; brother, A.B. Roberts; and sister, Joan Roberts Hutchens.
A private graveside service will be held at Grandview cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, followed by an Open Memorial Service at Laws Chapel Primitive Baptist Church at 3:00 p.m. Family prefers donations to 'Brookwood, ' Brookshire, Texas in lieu of flowers.

Edward Brewer
Edward Brewer, age 92 of Maryville died Wednesday, September 5, 2001 at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was a member of First Christian Church; retired from ALCOA with 35 years of service; and a member of ALCOA'S 25-Year Club. preceded in death by: parents, Mark and Caldona Brewer; first wife, Eula Long Brewer; second wife, Elizabeth Merriman Brewer; sisters, Margaret Archer, Helen Lewis; brothers, Fred and Max Brewer.
Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Jolene Brewer of Maryville; step children, Franklin and Joyce Long of Walland, Ben and Wanda Long of Alcoa, Betty and Bob Hurst of Scottsboro, AL; grandchildren, Staci Wilkerson and Eddie Brewer; sister, Martha Hughes of Dunnellon, FL; sister-in-law, Belle Brewer of Maryville; special friend, Sam Martin.
Family and friends will assemble at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 8, 2001 at Grandview cemetery for graveside service and interment with Rev. Casey Hancock officiating. Willis D. Burnette, Jr., age 76 of Maryville passed away Wednesday evening, September 5, 2001 at Blount Memorial Hospital. Veteran of the U.S. Marines and the U.S. Army. preceded in death by son, Mark Gregory Burnette; parents, Willis D. Sr. and Anna Mae Breeden Burnette; brother, Theodore Burnette.
Survivors: wife, Margaret Messer Burnette; daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Porter Holland of Kingston, Robin Burnette of Maryville, Sarah and Dean Currier of Maryville; son and daughter-in-law, Willis D. III and Candy Burnette of Madisonville; sons, David Theodore Burnette of Maryville, Jon Michael Burnette of Madisonville, Timothy Wayne Burnette of Maryville; 9 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; sister, Charlotte Simpson of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will meet at Milligan Grove cemetery in Sevier County at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 8, 2001 for graveside service and interment, Rev. Gerald Lawson officiating. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. til 12:00 p.m. (noon) Saturday at Miller Funeral Home, Maryville.

Bruce C. Scott
Bruce C. Scott, age 86 of Maryville went to be with the Lord Thursday, September 6, 2001 at his home. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Maryville. He retired from ALCOA with 40 years of service and was a member of their 25-year club.
Preceded in death by: wife, Dorothy Gibbs Scott.
Survivors include: daughter, Karen S. Taylor of Maryville; son, Michael D. Scott of North Carolina; grandchildren, Julie Gentry of Knoxville, Christopher S. Thomas of Pasadena, CA, Kimberly Scott of Bridgeville, PA, and Caroline Scott of Bridgeville, PA; great grandchildren, Lacey English and Lindsey English of Knoxville; special caregivers, Irene Sands and Edith Teffeteller.
Funeral service will be at 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 7, 2001 in the Trinity Chapel of Smith Mortuary with Dr. Charles Ballard officiating. Family and friends will assemble at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 8, 2001 at Sherwood Memorial Gardens for the interment. Robert Yates
Robert Yates, age 77 of Loudon, formerly of Maryville, passed away suddenly Thursday, September 6, 2001, at his home. Robert was a former employee of the Aluminum Co. of America. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the Army. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, William Connie Yates and Sarah West Yates; sister, Margaret Yates; brothers, Kenneth, Clarence and Billy Yates.
Survivors: sisters, Grace Blevins, Glen Valentine, Willie B. Simerly, Marie Fields and Alvis June Herron all of Maryville, Bernice Stout of Knoxville; brothers, Floyd Yates of Gainesville, Florida, and Roy Yates of Detroit, Michigan; several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at their convenience at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City. Family and friends will gather at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oak Grove cemetery for graveside services with Rev. Alvin Patton and Rev. Ben Ward officiating. Click Funeral Home is serving the Yates family.

Sarah Joyce Lyons, age 59 of Maryville, passed away Friday, September 14, 2001 at UT Hospital. preceded in death by parents, Dennis and Elizabeth Heath.

VERNIE RICHARD BURCHFIELD

Vernie Richard Burchfield, age 96 of Maryville passed away Monday, September 17, 2001, at the family home. Mr. Burchfield was born February 1, 1905, in Cades Cove. He was a member of Third Street Baptist Church. He retired from ALCOA with 26 years of service. He worked with the lumber companies on Smoky Mountain before the National Park was established. preceded in death by wife, Nora Mae Myers Burchfield; parents, John and Tennie Tipton Burchfield; brothers, France and George Burchfield; sisters, Viola Burchfield Myers, Dorothy Burchfield Clark, Amy Burchfield Sparks; granddaughter, Dena Burchfield Gray; several nieces and nephews. Survivors include sons, Harley and Dallas Burchfield, both of Maryville; daughter, Verna Lee Burchfield Myers of Walland; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; special niece, Lorene Burchfield Willis; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral service will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesday September 18 in the West Chapel of Smith Mortuary with Rev. Albert Oliver and Willard Willis officiating. Family and friends will assemble 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 19, 2001, at Cades Cove Memorial Baptist Church cemetery for the interment.
