Carrie Swiney Nuchols, age 73, of Alcoa, passed away Thursday Aug. 3, 2006, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husbands, W. Leonard Swiney, and Charles Kenneth Nuchols; son, Rickey Swiney; parents, William Golden and Georgie Marie Wright Henshaw; brother, Frank Henshaw; sisters, Francis Reed and Brenda Dyer. She is survived by her daughters, Vicky Hayes and Angela Swiney; grandchildren, Sonja, Richard and Shane; great-grandchildren, Cody and Brittany; daughter-in- law, Joyce Swiney; brother, Sam Henshaw, of Las Vegas, Nev. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, at Memorial Funeral Home in Maryville with Rev. Lonnie Swiney officiating. BETTY LOU ALLEN RAPER SMITH
Betty Lou Allen Raper Smith, age 85, of Louisville, passed away Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, at Fairpark Health Care Center. She was born Dec. 7, 1920, was a charter member of Louisville First Baptist Church. preceded in death by husband, Howard Junior Smith; daughter, Myrtle Ann Brown; brother, Fred Raper; sister, Merle Reynolds; and parents, Jim and Myrtle Raper. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Glen and Charlene Smith, Roy and Robin Smith; sisters, Hazel Bible and Carolyn Courtney; brother, Jimmy Raper; son-in-law, Bobby Brown; six grandchildren and spouses, Ray and Susan Smith, Michelle and Tim Zoppa, Amy and Steve Baker, Len Sands, Mitchell and Cindy Jackson, and Vanessa and Steve Lazarus; 10 great-grandchildren. MARY HOWELL STOVER
Mary Howell Stover, age 84, passed away Friday, Aug. 4, 2006. Member of St. John's Methodist Church. preceded in death by husband, William Stover. Survived by son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Judy Stover; granddaughters, Susan Davis and Alice Stover; grandson, Allen Stover Jr.; six great-grandchildren. She was active in the Home Demonstration Club and employed by Lowe's Drugstore for 10 years. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until noon Sunday at Sherwood Chapel. CHARLES ROBERT THOMAS
Charles Robert Thomas, age 65, of Maryville, passed away Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, at his home. He was a loving husband, father and friend. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Townsend. He was active with Maryville College Alumni, captain of the 1963-64 football team and inducted to Maryville College's Wall of Fame where he was currently serving as a board member. He was a lifelong farmer and an avid golfer. He retired from Rohm & Haas Company, of Knoxville, with 35 years of service. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, French Thomas Kidd, and his uncle, J. Marion Nuchols. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Brenda Edwards Thomas; son and daughter-in-law, Mark Charles and Datha Thomas, of Maryville; daughter and son-in-law, Kerma and Michael Headrick, of Maryville; five grandchildren, Andrew 'Drew' Thomas, Lindsay Thomas, Leah Thomas, Thomas Headrick and Sarah Headrick; sister, Carolyn Thomas Bair; two nieces, Kelly Smith and Kathy Keeney, all of Penn.; aunt and uncle, Lorean and Raymond Handley, of Maryville; brother and sister-in-law, William C. and Lynn Edwards; special cousin, David Nuchols and wife, Jo Dean Nuchols. MCCULLOCH, DONALD ANDREW, age 48, of Maryville, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, at Blount Memorial Hospital.

JOE EDWARD ARWOOD, SR.
Joe Edward Arwood, Sr., age 73 of Farragut, formerly of South Knoxville and Roane County, passed away early Wednesday morning, August 16, 2006 at Park West Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Joe retired from ORNL in 1994 with over 30 years of service and was a craft supervisor at the HIFR. He was a member of Cherokee Lodge # 728 F&AM and was a 32nd degree Mason. Joe was a member of the International Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local. He was an avid Vol fan and supporter, and loved to camp. Joe was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Evelyn Bradburn Arwood; parents, Bruce and Mattie Wilkins Arwood; brother, Gene Arwood. Survivors: wife of 30 years, Edna Arwood; daughter, Vicky Harmon and husband, Mitchell Lemons of Kingston; sons, Joe Arwood Jr. and wife Kathy of Karns, James Arwood of Farragut; step son, Ricky Allen and wife Periza of Corpus Christi, TX; grandchildren, Joey, Katina, Jennifer, Nicky, Derick, Ryan, Keith, Klint, Travis and Kristy; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, Rev. Esther K. Edmons Ashner, age 87 of Maryville passed away Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at Blount Memorial Hospital. Esther was well known for her wonderful sense of humor and deep spirituality. She will be lovingly missed by her family and many friends. preceded in death by: great-granddaughter, Abigail E. Futterman; brother, Elmo V. Edmons. Survived by: daughter, Catherine (Kate) A. Iva Beatrice Graves, 86 formerly of the Old Chilhowee Community died August 14, 2006 at NHC in Knoxville. She was preceded in death by her parents: Hugh and Hattie Graves; brothers: Chet, Fred, and Lee Graves; and sisters: Velma Yeomans, Violet Graves, Eva Graves, Geraldine Harrison, Dorothy Potter, and Mary Abdella. She is survived by her sister: Marie McNew of Blaine; and several nieces and nephews. The family and friends will meet at Old Chilhowee cemetery in Seymour at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 18, 2006 for a Graveside Funeral Service with Minister John Russell officiating. BEULAH MAE EDMONDS
Beulah Mae Edmonds, age 79 of Maryville, passed away Sunday, August 13, 2006, at Blount Memorial Hospital after a long battle with cancer at her home. She was a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church and also Home Avenue Chapel. She was a professional homemaker and mother.
Mrs. Edmonds was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Ray Edmonds; parents, William H. and Lydia Thomas; several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Ann Edmonds of Friendsville, Randy and Sherri Edmonds of Maryville; son, Andy Edmonds of Maryville; daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Archie Dunlap of Maryville; grandchildren, Stacy, Angie, Meaghan, Amanda, Amy; great-grandchildren, Dustin, Corumn, Kaleb, Tyler, Hailey; sisters, Irene, Bobbie Jo, Imogene, Alberta; brother, Barney.
Funeral services will be held at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday in McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tom Gilliland officiating. The interment service will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Grandview Cemetery.

Gladys I. Evans, age 89, departed this life at 10:00 Sunday night, August 13, 2006 at Brakebill Convalescent Center, as the Angels of Heaven lovingly carried her to her home of eternal rest. She was born October 11, 1916 in Lenoir City, Tennessee to parents, C.W. Wright and Tennie E. Wright. Gladys was a longtime member of Southside Baptist Church, Knoxville. preceded in death by husband of 52 years, Ray C. Evans; son, Don R. Evans; grandchildren, Cathy Williams and Stephen Evans; brothers, Fred A. Wright and Earl W. Wright. Surviving family includes son, Jack Evans, Rockford; daughter, Barbara 'Jeanie' and husband, Harold Underwood, Knoxville; daughter-in-law, Carol H. Evans, Kentucky; granddaughters, Vicki Underwood, Knoxville; Amy Underwood, Charleston, South Carolina; Tanya Oxendine, Maryville; grandsons, Donnie and wife, Rhonda Evans, Maryville; Jim and wife, Melissa Underwood, Knoxville; several great-grandchildren. GRADY KNIGHTON
Grady Knighton, age 79, died August 12, 2006 at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was born in Alcoa Tennessee April 19, 1927 to the late Fraisee and Anna Knighton.
He worked in New York City for the US Postal service from 1966 until he retired in 1989. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Alcoa where he served as a Deacon and faithful member of the choir. He was a graduate of Charles M. Hall High School where he was an outstanding athelete. He enjoyed attending the sporting events of the area schools. He was the founding member of the Hall Alumni Association's scholarship fund.
Preceding Grady in death are his parents Fraisee and Anna Knighton; brothers Morzena Knighton Sr, James Knighton and Jason Knighton; a sister Lily May Knighton.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Drewena Roddy Knighton; sons James (Sue) Knighton of Atlanta, Ga, Grady Lewis (Helen) Knighton, Marvin (Charlene) Kinghton and Wayne Knighton all of Alcoa, TN; 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; mother-in-law Vestae Roddy of Alcoa; sisters-in-law Carol (Robert) Henry of Rockford, Katheleen Tate of Alcoa, and Helen (Otis) Tanks of New York; brother-in-law Larry Roddy of Alcoa; special friends Cecil and Freddie Henderson and Ernest and Fay McQueen.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday August 17th at 3:00 p.m. at Rest Haven Baptist Church in Alcoa with Rev. R.J. Miller officiating. Ruth DeRieux Akridge, died Sept. 8, 2006, following a long illness. She was born on Oct. 24, 1918, to the late William L. and Lucy Burkhart DeRieux, of Whittle Springs, in Knoxville. She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, John E. Akridge, Jr., as well as her siblings: William L. DeRieux, Jr., Ralph DeRieux, and Louise Hudgens. She leaves her sons, John (Chip) E. Akridge, III, of Easton, Md., D. Steven Akridge, of Falls Church, Va., and James W. Akridge, of Newport News, Va. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
