Jewelle Austin, age 79, of Alcoa, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, August 8, 2006, at Maryville Healthcare. Member of Madison Avenue Baptist Church of Maryville. HUGH EDWARD `JIM' BEARDEN
Hugh Edward 'Jim' Bearden, age 79, of South Knoxville went to be with the Lord Sunday, August 6, 2006. He was a member of Stock Creek Baptist Church and retired from Robert-Shaw Controls. He was also a member of Farmer's Association for Retail Marketing. Vegetable Gardening was his favorite hobby and nothing made him happier than sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends. Survivors include wife and best friend of 60 years, Margaret 'Betty' Bearden; daughter and son-in-law, Marty and Merrill Taylor; son and daughter-in-law, Hugh 'Ed' and Donna Bearden; grandchildren, Jackie Roberson, Rocky and wife, Mandy Holloway, Hugh Edward Bearden IV and wife, Ashley, Mandy and husband, Trey Mann; aunt, Helen Payne; several brothers and sisters-in-law in the Thomas family. Dolly Sue Finger, age 70, of Maryville, passed away Wednesday, August 9, 2006 at Blount Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Twin Oaks Baptist Church and was a special mother, grandmother, and loving great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vola W. Finger Jr.; parents, Ollie and Cora Blair; sons, Raymond Michael Payne and Dennis Edward Payne; grandson, Donald Glen Cowden II; sisters, Charlotte Law, Mildred Long, and Ethel Garner; and brothers, Liemem Millsaps, Ellis Blair, and Charles Blair. Edwin Leverence, age 89, of Maryville, passed away Wednesday, August 9, 2006 at the family home. He was born June 11, 1917 in Chicago, Illinois and was retired as a truck driver of forty nine years. He was preceded in death by his son, Edwin James Leverence; infant daughter, Sharon Lee Leverence; parents, William and Marie Whiteside Leverence; stepmother, Anna Hinricks Leverence; brother and sister-in-law, William and Eleanor Leverence; sons-in-law, Bill Luecht and Chuck Quinn; and first wife, Rose Marie Reusz Leverence. He is survived by his wife, Alma Whitehead Leverence; daughters and sons-in-law, Rose and Ralph Garner of Greenback and Margaret and John Schick of Portage, Indiana; daughters, Barbara Luecht of Chicago, Illinois and Florence Quinn of Edwards, Missouri; brothers and sisters-in-law, Howard and Leona Leverence of Alabama, Robert and Marge Leverence of Michigan, and Richard and Mary Ann Leverence of Illinois; step sisters, Lucinda Mirs and Leona Flynn both of Waterloo, Iowa; twenty nine grandchildren; thirty two great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. LAVERNE M. LONG
LaVerne M. Long, of Santa Barbara, CA, formerly of Maryville, passed away Sunday, August 6, 2006 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. LaVerne was born Amanda LaVerne McDonald in Fort Worth, TX to Sally and Frank McDonald. She grew up in Robbinsville, North Carolina, and Maryville, Tennessee, during the Depression. During World War II, LaVerne was a living 'Rosie the Riveter' working at Oak Ridge, TN on munitions. She is a graduate of the University of Tennessee with a Masters Degree in Education. She is a Past Program Director and proud member of the Santa Barbara Women's Club. LaVerne was an educator in MI, FL, GA and CA. Generous, funny and vivacious, LaVerne enjoyed family gatherings and travel. LaVerne had many friends in Santa Barbara, CA. A strong believer in the power of education, LaVerne made great sacrifices to ensure that her grandchildren completed higher degrees, opening her home and her heart. Family members never questioned LaVerne's fierce loyalty in ensuring their well-being and advancement. LaVerne is survived by her son, Gary Millsaps; daughter, Tommie Rae Barnett; daughter-in-law, Mary Jo Millsaps; stepchildren Chuck, Eric and Pat Long; grandchildren Lara Millsaps, Scott, Lora and Bretta Barnett; Shelly, Brenda, Raymond, Patrick and Griffin Long; great-grandchildren Sydney, Bailey and Ethan Barnett. RICHARD H. `DICK' MESCHENDORF, JR.
Richard H. "Dick" Meschendorf, Jr. died Sunday, August 6, 2006, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. He was 73 years old.
Dick was born on April 24, 1933, in Miami, FL, and was the son of the late Richard H. Meschendorf and the late Hettie Hale Meschendorf Lewis. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather Gaines A. "Cricket" Lewis.
He moved to Knoxville, TN and was a graduate of Castle Heights Military Academy, Lebanon, TN. He attended the University of Tennessee, graduating from Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, TN. He served in the U.S. Air Force on active duty in Korea in 1952-1953, and was in the Air Force reserve at Knoxville's McGhee Tyson Air Base.
Dick was a prominent businessman in Knoxville, prior to his retirement to Brownsville, TN in 1998. He was manager with Hall-Brown men's clothiers for many years at its Gay Street and West Town Mall locations; and was a manager with E.B. Copeland & Company before joining Home Federal Savings & Loan Association as Marketing Director in the mid-1970's. In 1985, he joined Fidelity Federal S&L as East Tennessee President, and continued his banking career with Union Planters Bank as Senior Vice President when it merged with Fidelity Federal. In 1995, Dick retired from banking and joined the Greater Knoxville Chamber of Commerce as Vice President of Governmental Affairs.
An active volunteer in both the Brownsville and Knoxville communities, he served as Chairman of the Board for East Tennessee Children's Hospital and as board member for 24 years; Chairman of the Trustees for WSJK-Public Television in Knoxville; Chairman of the Better Business Bureau, Senior Citizens Home Assistance Service, and served on the boards and in leadership capacities for many social service, religious, and community organizations. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Upon retirement in Brownsville, Dick served as Chairman of Finance for First United Methodist Church, Quartermaster and Adjutant for the V.F.W. Post, and was a member of the Ed Worsham Masonic Lodge #505. An avid golfer and bridge player, he enjoyed many leisure hours with his new-found friends in West Tennessee.
Dick was a member of First United Methodist Church, Brownsville, where he served as Chair of the Finance Committee; and was also active at Church Street United Methodist Church while living in Knoxville.
He is survived by his wife Jo Matherne Meschendorf; two sons, Richard H. Meschendorf, III and his wife Joy, Maryville, TN; James K. Meschendorf and his wife Stacy, Knoxville; and a daughter Martha M. Wilds and her husband Mike, Knoxville. "Pop" is also survived by four grandchildren, Jonathan Meschendorf, Matthew Meschendorf, and Helen and Grant Wilds; and leaves his first wife June Cottrell Meschendorf, and numerous cousins.
Family visitation will be held Tuesday evening at the Brownsville Funeral Home, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held in Knoxville at Church Street United Methodist Church, Thursday, August 10th at 2:00 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Kent Bailey and the Rev. William Fowler. Burial will follow at Greenwood cemetery in Knoxville. The family will receive friends at Church Street Methodist between 12:00 and 1:45 p.m. on Thursday immediately before the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to East Tennessee Children's Hospital, Knoxville; Brownsville First United Methodist Church; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
PHYLLIS ANN NICHOLSON
Phyllis Ann Nicholson, age 66 of Maryville passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2006 at Blount Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a beloved mother and grandmother. She was born on March 2, 1940 in Maryville, TN to Staley and Hazel McClanahan of Friendsville. preceded in death by: father, Staley McClanahan. Survivors include: mother, Hazel McClanahan; sisters, Elnora McClanahan, Ruth Gilland, Shirley Kelso, Martha Hardin; brothers, Marvin, Loy, Emerson, Ronald, and Jerry McClanahan; son, Robert Floyd Nicholson Jr.; son and daughter-in-law, Art & Ginger Nicholson; granddaughter, Lindy whom she loved more than anything in this world; several nieces and nephews; and special feline friend, Trixie. She will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. We love you Mom. WILLIAM ALFRED RILEY
William Alfred Riley, 86, of Maryville, Tennessee, formerly of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, August 8, 2006.
Mr. Riley was born in Kearney, New Jersey, March 31, 1920. He was a veteran of the Army Air Force serving in the European Theater during WWII; He received the European-Africa-Middle Eastern Ribbon with the Bronze Star and the WWII Victory Medal. He was a member and Elder Emeritus of New Hope Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga and also held memberships in the North Arlington Masonic Lodge #271 F.&A.M. of New Jersey and the American Legion Post #14. Mr. Riley retired to Chattanooga in 1983 and recently relocated to Morningview Village in Maryville, Tennessee.
Mr. Riley was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Gertrude Hill Riley; and sisters, Marion Riley Brown, Ethel Riley Davis and Althea Riley Moynihan.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Anna Catherine Davis Riley; daughter, Barbara Riley Lasater, Knoxville; special sister-in-law, Betty Nelson; also sisters-in-law, Mary Bielski and Margaret Pidgeon; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at National cemetery with full military honors.

VIRGINIA MYERS DOCKERY
Virginia Myers Dockery, 62, of Riverdale, GA, formerly of Alcoa, passed away Monday, August 7, 2006, at her home of natural causes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert R. Dockery, and father, J. Marion Myers. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Michael Hagler of Newnan, GA and Sheila and Rusty Duzan of Bruceville, IN; mother, Mildred Green Myers of Maryville, TN; sister and brother-in-law, Edna and Jim Riddick of Alcoa, TN; brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Donna Myers of Greensboro, NC; two grandchildren, Austin Hagler and Sarah Duzan; several uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and special friends.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 10 from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Alcoa. T.R. HARRIS
T.R. Harris, age 63, of Maryville, passed away Monday, August 7, 2006 at Blount Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served in the U.S. Army. preceded in death by parents, Doake and Zelda Mae Cardin Harris; and several aunts and uncles.
