Florence Extine, 89, of Knoxville, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 4, 2004. Devoted wife for 74 years, devoted mother, grandmother and faithful member of Tipton Station Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, L.B. and Mary Ella Spurgeon; brothers, Ellis, Bob, Herman and Rufus Spurgeon; sisters, Edna Howard and Pearl Extine.
Survivors: husband, Clifford Extine; children, Charles Extine, Mary Ella McKenna and Connie Childress; beloved sons-in-law, Ronald McKenna and Ronald Childress; grandchildren, Cathy McKenna, Rhonda Sundstrom and husband Dale, Clifford McKenna, Erica Adams and Justin Childress; great-grandchildren, Charisa Brigham, Clifford 'C.J.' Sundstrom and Ronny Sundstrom; brother, L.B. 'Bud' Spurgeon; half-brothers and sisters, Teddy, Benny, Sadie, Juanita and Aretta; beloved friend, Dolly Brennise.

Ethel Mae Hill, 93 years young, a resident of Fairpark Health Center in Maryville, TN, passed away Thursday, June 3, 2004, to her home in heaven. She was born in Wise, Virginia, on May 11, 1911, to Ernestine Gillienwater Beverly and George Washington Beverly. She had two brothers, Sheely and Roscoe; four sisters, Bess, Alice, Bell and Maxine; and two husbands, Lee Shugart and Robert Hill, all deceased. She is survived by her son, Dr. Lee R. Shugart and his wife Shirley of Knoxville, Tennessee; three granddaughters, Anna Lynn Shugart and husband Michael Carter of Maryville, Tennessee, Lizabeth Shugart and husband Bill Carpenter of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Nanette Shugart and husband Mark Cantley of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; five grandchildren, Aaron Shugart-Brown, Elaine Carpenter, Ridge Carter, Allen Carpenter and Miriam Rose Ryburne; and two nieces, Geraldine Swartz and Patricia Bryson, all of Knoxville, Tennessee. Charles Dewey Maples, age 64, of Seymour, died suddenly on Wednesday, June 2, 2004. He was a member of Valley Grove Baptist Church. Owner of L&M Printing in Maryville and was retired from the Naval Reserves with 22 years of service. preceded in death by father, W.C. Maples, Sr. of Seymour. He is survived by loving wife of 44 years, Virginia 'Ginny' Maples; mother, Wilma Maples; daughters and sons-in-law, Lori and Gordon Wright, Wendy and Scott Barker; son, Steven Maples and companion, Trisha Brady; grandchildren, Lee, Anna, Tucker and MaKenzie Wright and Baylee Barker; sister and brother-in-law, Gleneva and Carroll Helton of Irving, Texas; brother and sister-in-law, Conny and Donna Maples of Sulphur, Louisiana; mother-in-law, Viola Lee; one niece; several nephews; and special friend and business partner, Clarence Kirkland. Family and friends will meet at Tennessee Veterans cemetery for an 11:30 memorial service on Monday, June 7, 2004. Full military honors will be provided by the Naval Marine Corps Reserves of Knoxville and Volunteer State Honor Guard. Gerald Lynn Mehaffey, of Walland, passed away Saturday, June 5, 2004, at home. He was a member of Allens Creek Baptist Church in Waynesville, NC. He was a Vietnam Veteran. preceded in death by father, Jerry 'Jack' Mehaffey, and brothers, Kenneth Lee and James Wilburn Mehaffey.
Survivors include: mother, Monnie Cagle Mehaffey. Son, Jeremy Paul Mehaffey. Niece, Kim Yost. Aunt, Juanita Turner.

Jackie Beatrice Arwood Murrell, age 79 of Rockford, TN, passed away on June 4, 2004, at her home in Rockford. She was a member of Rockford Baptist Church. She was a very hard worker at Morrisons Restaurant. She was also a very caring, loving, funny person to everyone she came in contact with. She was a wonderful loving mother and grandmother. preceded in death by: husband, Charles Mack Murrell; son, Jerry A. Murrell, Sr.; father, David Perry Arwood; mother, Sara Jane Vaughn Arwood; also many brothers and sisters. Survivors include: sons and wives, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Roy Murrell of Granite Falls, NC; Mr. Homer Clyde Murrell Sr. of Rockford; Mr. & Mrs. David Earl Murrell of Carthage, TX. She had 15 grandchildren and their spouses and 28 great-grandchildren that she loved very much. Three of her grand-daughters, Vickie Hartline, Mandy Hatcher and Sherry Winter were her caregivers. RUBY LEE TALLENT
Ruby Lee Tallent, age 91, of Maryville, passed away early Saturday morning June 5, 2004. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, and was a wonderful blessing to her family and anyone who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Ramona Finger Lee; her husband, Homer Charles Tallent; two children, John H. Tallent and Maxine Tallent Keeble; brother, Burl Lee; and sisters Ruth, Naomi and Pearl.
She leaves behind the family she adored: daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Tallent Hafley and Don Hafley, Norma Tallent Carrigan and Eddie Carrigan; as well as her grandchildren, Robin Hafley Farmer, Scott Hafley, Phillip Carrigan, Beth Keeble French, Kenny and Chuck Keeble; her great-grandchildren, Tanner French, Taylor Farmer, Noah and Evan Carrigan and Heather Keeble Goins; one great-great-granddaughter, Keliey Goins; brother, Carl Lee; sister, Virginia Thompson; many nieces and nephews. She was a proud member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and of Maple Grove Baptist Church. She will be greatly missed.

Nellie Marie Amburn Best, age 89, loving Mother, Grandmother, and friend, passed away Friday afternoon, June 4, 2004, at Fairpark Nursing Center in Maryville. She was preceded in death by husband, Nathan A. Best; brothers, Joe, Earl, and Paul Amburn; sisters, Annie Ward, Aileen Jones, and Johnnie Mae Amburn. Survivors: Sons and Daughters in law; Ralph and Frances Best of Lithonia, Georgia; Floyd and Wilma Best of Maryville. Grandchildren: Scott Best and wife Donna of Maryville, Tracie Best of Maryville, Kevin Best and wife Robin of Covington, Georgia. Five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Eliza Ruth Hannah Rasor, age 95 of Maryville, went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, June 3, 2004. She was a member of Mountain View Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Verne Rasor; parents, A.P. "Bud" and Mae Hannah; brother, Paul Hannah and wife Clara, sister, Inez Raulston and husband Floyd.
She is survived by son, William "Bill" Rasor and wife Phyllis of Maryville; former, daughter-in-law, Linda Rasor of Maryville; daughter, Phyllis Daniel and husband Wayne of Carmi, IL; grandchildren, Rhonda Conner and husband David, Diana Tuck and husband Alan, Rachel Daniel, Kimberly Clark and husband Thomas, and Phillip Daniel; great-grandchildren include Autumn, Adam, and Aaron Conner, Lindsey, Allyson, and Dale Tuck, Cody Daugherty, Ian Daniel, and Heather, Martina, Lindsay Clark; special nieces and nephew Pauline Murphy, Virginia Porter, Mary Sue Harris and Tom Raulston.

Joseph L. 'J.L.' McMahan, age 84, of Maryville, passed away Thursday morning June 3, 2004 at the family home in Sevier County. He was a decorated veteran of World War II having been awarded the Bronze Star while serving with the US Army's First Calvary Division in the Pacific Theater. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leander and Martha Welch McMahan. He is survived by his wife, Paralee Mashburn McMahan; and son and daughter-in-law, Stan and Brenda McMahan all of Sevier County. Lelia Cox Rimmer, age 98, a long-time resident of the Amherst Community died Tuesday, June 1, 2004. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and the widow of Claude Eugene Rimmer. Mrs. Rimmer is survived by her children, J.W. and Margaret Rimmer of Maryville, Blanche Kenley of Talbott, Robert and Patricia Rimmer of Rockford, Agnes and R.L. Kirby of Knoxville, Raymond and Linda Rimmer of Rockford, Curtis and Ethel Rimmer of Crossville; son-in-law, Roy Edwards of Jefferson City; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Helen M. Cupp (Moty), age 79 of Alcoa, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at her home. Helen was an R.N. with U.T. Hospital for 35 years, and was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Cupp; parents, Carl and Emma Murrin; sister, Jean Webb and brother, Sonny Murrin.
Survivors include: 2 daughters, Carol Jean Weeks and husband Lester of Friendsville, Bettye Ann Fuller and husband Tom of Alcoa; 1 grandchild, Mike Weeks of Friendsville; great-grandchild, Brennan Weeks; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Donald W. Jacobs of FL; special friends, Trey and Katrina Popwell, Cynthia and Derick McMillan and Dean Cooper; several nieces and nephews.
