A native of Cleveland, OH, he is the son of William Dempsey and Norma Shell, Cleveland, OH. Survivors include his wife, Michelle V. Shell, of the home, six children, Sherri Shell, Cleveland, OH, Stacy Shell, Detroit, MI, Taylor Shell, Cleveland, OH, Aislinn Krause, Cleveland, OH, Michael Shell, Johnson City, Faith Shell, Johnson City, two brothers, William Dean Shell, Cleveland, OH, Troy Christopher Shell, Cleveland, OH, grandparents, David and Bettie Yergin, Lodi, OH, several aunts and uncles also survive. RICHARD “RICK” PARLIER, JR. Richard “Rick” Parlier, Jr., age 46, formerly of 512 South Cedar St., Elizabethton died Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at Life Care Center, Elizabethton following an extended illness. A native of Marion, VA, he is the son of Richard Parlier, Sr. and the late Evelyn Hampton Parlier. He was of the Baptist Faith and a retired employee of Blue Flame Gas Company. He was a avid fan of NASCAR Racing and Dale Earnhart, Jr. Mr. Parlier had served in the U.S. Army. MAZIE MORTON DAVIS Mazie Morton Davis, age 75, 236 Swimming Pool Road, Hampton died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late J.D. and Sadie Hinkle Morton. She was a member of Union Baptist Church and former employee of Bemberg Corporation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert Davis, one grandson, Tony Montgomery, and one sister, Lockie Oliver. Zola L. Riner, age 80, of Life Care Center of Elizabethton, formerly of 114 Pearl Bowers Rd., died Sunday, June 13, 2004 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a four-month illness. Born in Norton, VA, Mrs. Riner formerly lived in Wise, VA and had resided in Carter County for the last five years. She was a retired CNA and was of the Baptist faith. She was a member of Hubbard Chapel Freewill Baptist Church of Pound, VA. Mrs. Riner was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Ora Stapleton Lane, her first husband, Milton Collins and second husband, Daniel W. Riner of Wise, VA. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Gwen and Ernest Bowers of Elizabethton, one step-son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Judy Riner of Piney Flats, TN, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Odel and Hilda Lane of Pound, VA, Carmel and Polly Lane of Abingdon, VA, two sisters and one brother-in-law, Zelda Lane and Evela and Curtis Hubbard of Wise, VA. LANEY JAMES CARDEN Laney James Carden, age 98, 1521 Hwy. 321, Hampton, fell asleep in the arms of Jesus, Friday, February 27, 2004 at his residence following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Ancil Grant and Isabel Goodwin Carden. He was a member of Union Baptist Church. Mr. Carden was a self employed businessman as owner of a service station and a sawmill. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Edith Teague Carden, two sons, James Carden, Charles Carden, three daughters, Laurie Carden, Parlene Carden, Melvina Lewis, several brothers and sisters. ELBERT FREDRICK HARR Elbert Fredrick Harr, age 83, Charles Smith Rd., Watauga, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, February 23, 2004, following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Geroge F. and Suda Hart Harr. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Eva Turbyfill, Donnie Feathers, Grace Harr and Vesta Woods; three brothers, Joe, Roy and Willie Harr. Mr. Harr was a member of Fairview Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, trustee, usher and the building and grounds and baptismal committees. He held the rank of PFC with the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with Gen. Patton’s 3rd Army, 94th Infantry, European Theatre in Germany and near the Rhyne River. He received two purple hearts and the good conduct medal and was a BAR Gunner and Expert Rifleman. He was a retired employee of Veterans Administration Mountain Home as a painter in the maintenance department. He was also a former employee of the Carter County Memorial Hospital as an assistant engineer. Survivors include his wife of sixty-four years, Cora Ellen Ward Harr, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law: Janice and Wayne Murray, Sr., Elizabethton and Ruth Ann and Richard Ford, Talbott, TN; two sons and daughters-in-law: J.C. and Kathy Harr, Elizabethton and Wayne and Rachel Harr, Watauga; nine grandchildren: Wayne Murray, Jr., Anthony Fredrick Murray, both of Elizabethton, Renee Keller, Talbott, TN, Rhonda Grooms, Morristown, Rebecca Ellen Ford, Duluth, GA, Tammy Markland and Shannon Clark, both of Elizabethton, Sherry Shephard, Johnson City and Heather Cole, Ocala, FL; six great-grandchildren; special nephew, Edward Haney, Watauga; two special nieces: Mary Sue Pearson, Watauga and Reba Church, Butler; several other nieces and nephews also survive. Mack A. Bennett, age 60, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center with his wife by his side. He fought a courageous three-year battle with cancer. He had been a minister for thirty-four years, having served the Mt. View Church of Christ, Bluff City from September, 1993 to August, 2002. He had touched many lives and was loved and admired by all who knew him. He was a veteran of the US Army, having served in Vietnam. Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his parents, Arville and Lydia Bennett, three brothers and one sister. Survivors are his wife of forty years, Janice Bennett, two sisters, Grace Bennett and Carolyn Bennett of Limestone, one sister and brother-in-law Bessie and Terry Moffitt of Bakersville, NC, one sister and brother-in-law Arlene and Mark Blevins of Elizabethton, two brothers, Coy Bennett of Limestone and Russell Bennett of Piney Flats, one uncle, Walter Wayne Bennett of Limestone, one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Hawk and Jean Thompson of Jonesborough, two nieces, Katie and Molly Blevins, and one nephew, Robbie Moffitt. REV. DANA COLEMAN Rev. Dana Coleman, age 94, 246 Browns Branch Road, Hampton, died Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at his residence. A native of Carter County he was the son of the late Rev. N.C. Coleman and Linda Brummit Coleman. He was preceded in death by his wife of seventy-two years, Lockie Grindstaff Coleman in 2002 and several brothers and sisters. Rev. Coleman pastored several area churches during his four decades of ministry. He was a faithful servant of the Lord and a witness for Him until his death. Survivors include two daughters: Shirley Messer, Bluff City and Ruby Lucille Lyons, Elizabethton; one son, Frank Coleman, Sr., Atlanta, GA; two brothers: Conley Coleman, Hampton and Paul Coleman, Newland, NC; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
