Myrtle Julia Smith Stewart Myrtle Julia Smith Stewart of Roanoke, VA, formerly of 412 Lee Avenue, Elizabethton, TN gained a new life on March 24, 2004. She was a native of Yancey County, NC, the daughter of the late Charles Monroe Smith and Allie Robinson Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Glen Stewart, April 1, 1982. Also preceding her in death were her brother, Samuel M. Smith and Two sisters, Janette S. Hall and Flora Smith. Mr. and Mrs. Stewart were the parents of one daughter, Sondra Lynn Stewart Slemp and son-in-law Andrew Alfred Slemp, Jr. of Roanoke, VA. Her pride and joy were her three grandchildren, Andrew Alfred Slemp, III (Drew), and his wife Cheyrl, of Talbott, Tennessee; Stewart James Robert Slemp (Rob), and his wife Wendy of Roanoke, VA; Julia Elizabeth Slemp Larro (Julie) and her husband Michael of Midlothian, VA. Seven great-grandchildren survive her: Erica Bailey Slemp, Jarrett Michael Morie, and Elliott Russell Morie, all of Talbott, TN; Andrew John Bradley Slemp and Anna Reese Slemp of Roanoke, VA; Elisabeth Page Larro and Mitchell Andrew Robert Larro of Midlothian, VA. Mrs. Stewart is also survived by a brother William Smith of Newport News, VA as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Stewart was a member of First Christian Church, Elizabethton, TN and the Winsome Sunday School Class. The graveside service will be conducted at 12:00 P.M. Saturday, March 27 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Dr. Jeffery W. Scott officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends Saturday, March 27 from 10:30 -11:30 A.M. at Tetrick Funeral Home. The family will be leaving in procession to the cemetery at 11:30 A.M. JAY LANNEY ROBERTS Jay Lanney Roberts, age 60, 252 Buck Creek Road, Roan Mountain, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 5, 2003 at his residence. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Jaye T. and Blanche Birchfield Roberts. Mr. Roberts was a member of Lower Shell Creek Christian Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a step-son, Timmy Potter. Survivors include his wife, Beulah Potter Roberts, of the home, one daughter and son-in-law, Tammy Layne Roberts and Scott Hicks, Roan Mountain, one granddaughter, Candice Dawn Roberts, Roan Mountain, one sister, Johnnye Jenkins, Valley Forge, one brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Margie Roberts, Granite Falls, NC, a very special aunt, Maude Holden, Roan Mountain, a special niece Roemisa Ward, Elizabethton, two step-grandchildren, Cory and Bret Hicks, Roan Mountain, several other nieces and nephews. He was lovingly referred to as “Grampsy” by several great-nieces and great-nephews who also survive. Harry S. “Bear” Ledford, age 87, Elizabethton, died unexpectedly, Wednesday, October 22, 2003, at his residence. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late W. E. and Emily Whitehead Ledford. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and George Washington University. He was preceded in death by three sisters. Mr. Ledford was involved in sports for many years. He played football under the late E. Niles Brown and also coached with him at Elizabethton during his career. Harry was a 136 pound guard and lettered three years in football for the Cyclones. He also played guard position in basketball and was a third baseman on the baseball team. He was also a boxer in high school and helped Dr. Thompson and Dr. Worelock in forming the Golden Glove program in Elizabethton. He was a varsity performer at George Washington University for three years and played in the Sun Bowl. He played offensive halfback and defensive end. He also played at G-W as second baseman on the baseball team and also the Basketball squad, but had to quit due to an injury. He finished his playing career at George Washington University and returned to Elizabethton as a coach for seventeen years. He joined the coaching staff at Elizabethton High School in 1942 and was an assistant football and the head basketball and track coach. Ledford coached one undefeated basketball team at Elizabethton High School and the club lost in the finals of the state tournament. In 1948 Ledford joined the George Washington staff for a year and then took a position as an assistant and trainer with the Washington Caps of the NBA coached by the famed Red Aurback. He remained with the Caps for three years before returning to G-W in 1952. During his stay at George Washington, Harry also owned a farm near the University where he raised and trained race horses. This was his biggest thrill in sports, to see a two year old horse in its first race. He was in the horse business about ten years before selling the farm. After leaving G-W, he was associated with the Kansas City Royals, then a minor league team, as a trainer and instructor and during that time, officials of the club constructed a baseball academy at Sarasota, FL. Ledford was an instructor at the school along with Bob Lemon, Jor Gordon, Jim Lemon and other former major league standouts. After semi-retirement Harry became a member of the Elizabethton Educational Board and served for one year as the Elizabethton Twins’ trainer. In 1952 Harry was selected “Man of the Year” for his work in Civic and Community affairs. Survivors include, one special niece and spouse, Janet Denny Arnold and Rodney Arnold, Elizabethton; eight great nieces, Tina Sharp and Erica Arnold, both of Knoxville, Amanda Arnold and Ginnie Norris both of Elizabethton; Aileen Pierson, Maryland; Risha Whalen and Audry Whalen both of Anchorage, Alaska; Whitney Tubbleville, Atlanta, Georgia; one nephew, Ulys “Squeak” Whalen, Gatlinburg. The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, October 25, 2003, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Buford Hankins officiating. Eulogy to be given by a great niece, Tina Sharp. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 26, 2003, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and neighbors. RUTH W. LEWIS Ruth W. Lewis, age 77, 655 Fox Meadow Road, Elizabethton Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at her residence following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Ruby Reynolds Williams. She was a member of First Christian Church, Elizabethton, where she was a member of the Sunshine Circle and Fidelis Class, where she had held various positions. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne C. Lewis, two sons, Gary Lewis, Larry Lewis, and one sister, Betty Williams. Survivors include two sons, Eddie Lewis, Elizabethton, Steve Lewis, Johnson City, one daughter, Betty Lewis, Elizabethton, two grandchildren, Aarron Lewis, Jessi Lewis, both of Elizabethton, two sisters, Linda Osborne, Jane Montgomery, both of Elizabethton, three special cousins, Emogene Thompson, Susan McKinney, both of Elizabethton, Mary Gordon, Sarasota, FL, a daughter-in-law, Jan Malezis, Elizabethton, several nieces and nephews also survive. VELMA BLEVINS HONEYCUTT Velma Blevins Honeycutt, age 85, Herman Honeycutt Road, Roan Mountain, died Saturday, November 8, 2003, in the Roan Highlands Nursing Center, following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Nat and Polly Odom Blevins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Honeycutt, Jr., a son, Dewey Hilmon, and two brothers, Jack Blevins and Sterlin Blevins. Mrs. Honeycutt was a homemaker and a member of Fork Mountain Free Will Baptist Church and also the Eastern Star. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law: Glenn and Linda Hilmon, Hampton; three daughters and one son-in-law: JoAnn Norris, Hampton, Debbie Stevens, Roan Mountain and Sue and Carey Goodwin, Bessemer, AL; ten grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; one sister, Billie Spooner, Bessemer, AL; one brother, Dale Blevins, Roan Mountain; special nephews: Mike and Terry Blevins, Roan Mountain; other nieces and nephews also survive. Trudie Vera Randall Trudie Vera Bowden Randall, age 93, formerly of 1009 Pearl St., Elizabethton, died Sunday, May 2, 2004 at Pine Ridge Care Center following an extended illness. A native of Fentress County, TN, she was a daughter of the late Lafayette Stevens and Mary Elizabeth Smith Bowden. Mrs. Randall was the wife and helpmate of the late Rev. Hobart Randall. She was a member of the East Side Baptist Church, Elizabethton, where she once served as WMU Director and discipleship training teacher. Mrs. Randall was a school teacher, having taught at Midway, Hunter & Buladean schools in Carter and Fentress counties in Tennessee retiring after 28 years of service. Prior to becoming a teacher, she attended the Stockton Valley Academy, Fentress County and was valedictorian of her class. Mrs. Randall was a graduate of Tennessee Tech, Cookeville, TN. As an educator, Mrs. Randall was a member of the National Education Association and the Carter County Retired Teachers’ Association. She was a former member of Friends of the Library. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Randall was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters and one granddaughter, Deborah Palagyi. Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law: Mary Elizabeth Randall Keylon and Ruth, and Mark, Cooper, both of Elizabethton; one son and daughter-in-law: Charles Hobart and Karen Randall of Crossville, TN; seven grandchildren and their spouses: Keith Bryan Banner, Cincinnati, OH, Robin Renee and Derek Brown, Indianapolis, IN, Mark Jason and Jennie Keylon and David Wayne and Lisa Keylon, both of Elizabethton; Jeff and Michelle Randall, Crossville, TN; Patrick and Marcy Randall, Livingston, TN; Lyndsey and Bradley Davis, Crossville, TN. Eight great-grandchildren survive: Melanie Nicole Keylon, Matthew McKinley Keylon, Wesley Wayne Keylon, Whitney Danielle Keylon, Haley Autumn Keylon, Seth McKinley Randall, Lauren McKenzie Randall, and Kendra Elizabeth Keylon. Three Nieces, Carla StClair, Wanda Faye and Zola Mae, two nephews, Donald Ray Bowden and Jerry David Bowden, a granddaughter’s spouse, Brian Palagyi, Elizabethton, and special friend Goldia Scott, Elizabethton, also survive. Mr. Johnny Wayne Livingston, age 61, 229 Echo Drive, Elizabethton, died Friday, November 7, 2003 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Shelbyville, TN, he was the son of the late Clyde & Katie Davenport Livingston. Mr. Livingston was a retired brick mason. He was a member of Lynn Valley Baptist Church where he served as van ministry director. He was also a member of the Carter County Cattleman’s Association. Mr. Livingston is survived by his wife, Sally Livingston, of the home; a mother-in-law, Etta Odom, of the home; one sister-in-law & spouse, Helen & Michael Keller, Elizabethton; special friends, the children of Lynn Valley Baptist Church; several special nieces and nephews also survive. The Memorial-Celebration service will be conducted at 6:00 P.M. on Sunday at Lynn Valley Baptist Church with Rev. Dennis Wilson & Rev. David Hankal officiating. JAMES N. “DUMP” ELLIS James N. “Dump” Ellis, age 64, of Lake Park, GA, died on Monday, November 3, 2003 at his residence. He was born on December 17, 1938 in Elizabethton, TN to Hallie Egli Ellis, of Elizabethton and to the late Paul Ellis. Mr. Ellis retired from Roadway and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of Morningside Baptist Church, a Mason and Shriner and a graduate of Unaka High School. He was preceded in death by a sister, Vivian Ellis Ward. Survivors in addition to his mother, include his wife, Judy C. MRS. JUNE PORTER HARRILL Mrs. June Porter Harrill, 1873 Field Road, Elizabethton, died Wednesday evening at her residence following a lengthy illness. She was a native of Castlewood, Virginia and the daughter of the late C. D. Porter and Rowena Dye Porter Whitehead. Mrs. Harrill had lived in Elizabethton for most of her adult life. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton. Mrs. Harrill was a graduate of Milligan College. She taught in the Elizabethton City Schools, primarily in the Science Department of T. A. Dugger Junior High School. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Frank Harrill of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Greg Bowers of Elizabethton; two grandsons, Alan and Daniel Bowers of Elizabethton; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert L. and Wilma Porter of Castlewood, Virginia; and one half-sister, D. Jane Hepp of Fairfax, Virginia. The funeral service for June Harrill will be conducted at 2:00 P M Sunday in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Buford Hankins officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mrs. Becky Hale, organist.
