FLOSSIE MAE WOODSON Flossie Mae Woodson, age 85, 219 Whittemore Road, Hampton died Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at Lakebridge Health Care Center following an extended illness. A native of Carter County she was the daughter of the late Asa L. And Judy Willis Cornett. She was a member of Fairview Free Will Baptist Church. Mrs. Woodson was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by a son Lawrence E. Cornett and a brother, Lawrence H. Cornett. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Penny and Patsy Woodson, Hampton, a daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Roger Whitehead, Roan Mountain, a daughter-in-law, Shirley Cornett, Hampton, sister-in-law, Nettie Cornett, Hampton, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive. ANNA ROSE HAYES Anna Rose Hayes, age 77, 770 Miles Field Road, Elk Park, NC died Tuesday December 9, 2003 at Charles A. Cannon Memorial Hospital, Linville, NC. A native of Vilas, NC, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Hassie J. Dugger Fulkerson. She was a member of Upper Shell Creek Christian Church. She was member of Order of Eastern Star, Newland, NC. Mrs. Hayes was retired employee of T.R.W and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Buster Hayes and a sister. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Linda K. and Terry Blevins, Hampton, one grandson, Jonathan Blevins, Hampton, one sister, Lamonie Gardner, Roan Mountain, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Margaret and James Garland, Buck Mountain, NC, several nieces and nephews also survive. MARSHALL T. NAVE Marshall T. Nave, age 75, formerly of 2308 Edgewood Avenue, Golf Course Acres, Elizabethton died Thursday, January 29, 2004 at the residence of his daughter, Terri Sue Nave, 733 Harbor Point Dr., Lake Harbor Estates, Johnson City following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was born July 14, 1928 to the late John L. and Gladys Arnold Nave. He was of the Methodist faith. Mr. Nave who joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 15, served in both World War II and the Korean War. Because of his military background, he worked for the rights of veterans. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, the American Theater Medal and the Victory Medal. He attended Milligan College and after being discharged from the Navy, he received a Bachelor’s Degree in accounting from Steed Business College, Johnson City. He served as an accountant with Tennessee Eastman Co. in Kingsport for several years. Mr. Nave was a well-known businessman and former State Senator, who was active in local politics and the Carter County Republican Party, Mr. Nave also served as a Magistrate and Chairman of the Carter County Quarterly Court from 1960 to 1966. Mr. Nave began his political career in the General Assembly by defeating the late Sen. Herman Robinson in the 1965 Republican primary for a seat representing Carter, Johnson and Washington Counties in the 84th General Assembly. Afterward, the district was reorganized to include only sections of Washington County as well as parts of Sullivan County. During his tenure in Nashville, Mr. Nave served on various committees, which were Conservation, Vice-Chairman of Education, Vice-Chairman of Finance, Ways and Means, Labor, Co-Chairman of Military and Veteran’s Affairs, State Employees, Buildings and Public Works, Introduction of Bills, Chairman of Business, Highways and Safety, Welfare and Employment Security, Vice-Chairman of General Welfare and Environmental, Highway Planning, Development and Safety, Committee on Calendar and Rules, Chairman of General Welfare/Human Resources. Also during his tenure, Mr. Nave worked for improved education and better roads and was credited with helping to pass legislation that established the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University. He also worked for funds for the expansion of the Elizabethton Vocational School and the Nave Paramedical School, which was named for him. Today, East Tennessee State University Nave Center, located across from Elizabethton High School houses medical offices and a research clinic. Mr. Nave’s tenure in Nashville ended in 1978. He returned home to Elizabethton, where he engaged in real estate development and rental properties management. His list of civic activities was varied and long. Among his memberships were Elizabethton PTA, National Boy Scouts of America, the Tennessee Hospital Association, the Carter County Rescue Squad, the Sportsmen Club, the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce, the Loyal Order of Moose, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. He was also a member of the American Legion and was Past State Commander, of Veterans of Foreign War and Past Commander of Capt. Lynn H. Folsom V.F.W. Post #2166. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beryl Wolfe Nave, his second wife of 33 years, Nettie Lee (Slemp) Nave, January 8, 1996 and one brother, Jack Nave. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Fletcher Nave, Elizabethton, three daughters, Terri Sue Nave, Johnson City, Shanda Nave, Tia Nave, both of Elizabethton, adopted son, Hunter “Bo” Nave, Elizabethton, adopted daughter, Betty Jean Robledo, San Antonio, TX, two grandsons, Kasey Lee King, Karson Trey King, both of Johnson City, several adopted grandchildren, and special aunts, Mae Hodge, Elizabethton and Hazel Nave, Elizabethton, also survive. The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31, at Tetrick Funeral Home Riverside Chapel with Rev. Terry Maughon officiating. Eulogies by Richard Sammons and Jay Nidiffer. Mr. Terry Allen Gryder, age 49 of 1013 Union Street, Aspen Apt. No. D5, Kingsport, TN and formerly of Butler, TN died Saturday, February 7, 2004 in the Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, TN following an extended illness. He was a native of Carter County and was the son of the late Dan Leroy and Anna Faye Marlow Gryder. He was a member of the Elk River Baptist Church and retired from A.F.G. Industries of Kingsport. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Gryder. A native of Seattle, Washington, she was the daughter of the late Edsel “Bill” & Myrtle Louise Haufle Brumbaugh. Mrs. Bates was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Harold Bates; two sisters, Myrna Butler & Nancy Brumbaugh. A native of Johnson County, she had lived in Carter County since 1948. She was the daughter of the late Roy B. and Mae Presnell Dugger. She was a homemaker and member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel Campbell and three brothers, James Dugger, J.R. Dugger and Lester Dugger. Frank Stout, age 86, 1424 Hickory Lane, Morristown, formerly of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at his residence after an extended illness. He was a native of Johnson County, and the son of the late Sam and Ethel Garland Stout. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. He was a lifetime member of Lynn Valley Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and a Sunday School teacher for 45 years. He worked as a carpenter for fifty years before retiring. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Lucille Stout, of the home, one daughter, Bonnie Kate Vaughn, and spouse, Mike, Morristown, one son, Billy Frank Stout, and spouse, Mary, Morristown, he is also survived by four sisters, Elsie Bare of North Carolina, Hazel Branch, Lona Cunningham and Mary Greene, all of Butler, TN, grandchildren, Jeff Vaughn, Douglas Arnold, Jonathan Stout and Tiffany Stout all Morristown, great grandchildren, Allison, Dylan and Lane Arnold and Ethan Stout, several nieces and nephews. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Everett and Mary Ellen Grindstaff Bowers. She was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church and a housewife. Mrs. Clemons was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Clemons, 2002, one great grandchild, Jesse Williams, one brother and three sisters. She has 27 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 14, 2003 at the Siam Baptist Church in Elizabethton, TN with Rev. Jack Roddy officiating. Music will be under the direction of the family. Interment will follow at the VanHuss Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Hunter Estep, Chipper Montgomery, Doug Bailey, Eddie Hardin, J.D. Anderson and Alphas Anderson. ROBERT “BOB” COLLINS Robert “Bob” Collins, age 94, 330 Wilbur Dam Road, Elizabethton died Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Roscoe and Ethel Collins. He was of the Baptist Faith. He was a retired mechanic from North American Rayon Corporation and Bemberg Corporation. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served in World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife Nannie Florence Morrell Collins, three brothers, Clifton Collins, Jack Collins and Chester Collins. Survivors include two nephews Richard Collins, Nashville, TN, Bobby Collins, Maryland, two nieces Carolyn Sue Dowlen, Nashville, TN, Terri Gillespie, Nashville, TN, nephew and niece by marriage, Arthur Sparks, Elizabethton, Dean Combs, Elizabethton, special friends, Mary Stevens, Elizabethton and J.D. Anderson, Elizabethton. The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 19, 2003 at Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with Rev. Jack Roddy officiating. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 20, at Happy Valley Memorial Park . Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:55 a.m. on Saturday. Special thanks to Sycamore Shoals Hospital and VA Medical Center Hospital, Mountain Home, TN.
