Vera Lee Julian Vance, age 73, of 690 Heaton Creek Rd., Roan Mountain, died Saturday, September 20, 2003 at her residence following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Earnest and Mollie Street Julian. She was a member of the Upper Heaton Creek Holiness Church and was retired from Carter County School System, Cloudland Elementary School, where she was a teacher’s aide in special education. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy A. Vance, August 14, 1996. Survivors include; one daughter and son-in-law, Kappie Lee and Donald Vance, Newland, NC; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Larry and Rosemary Vance, Elizabethton, Ron and Carolyn Vance, Roan Mountain, Danny Ray Vance, Roan Mountain; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Marie and Walter Wise, Marion, NC , Rada and J.B. Jones, Tarpon Springs, FL; one brother and sister-in-law, Maynard and Shirley Julian, Roan Mountain; nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and special caregiver, Kerry Clark, Roan Mountain also survives. The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 P.M. Monday, September 22 in the chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Rhododendron Chapel, Roan Mountain with Rev. Jim McMahan and Mr. J L Holtsclaw officiating. Music will be under the direction of John Charles Tolley, and Sherry Jack Clawson. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, September 23 at Earnest Julian Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Active Pallbearers will be: Michael Vance, Roy Dale Vance, Zachary Vance, Jim McKinney, Garfield “Ook” Freeman, and Floyd Hodge. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Dr. Daniel Frayne, Howard Metcalf, Bedford Transon, Nick Hodge, Roy Troutman, Sid Smithdeal, Bill Elliott, Warren Macbeth, Albert Lounds, and Harold Bethany. Obitury and Funeral Notice: Laura Ann Scalf Laura Ann Scalf, age 86, 157 Wade Bulla Road, Watauga, TN, died Sunday, September 28, 2003, at her residence. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Hannah Presnell Waters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Scalf and a son, Joseph Charlie “J.C.” Scalf. Mrs. Scalf attended Eastside Free Will Baptist Church and was a retired employee from Sears, where she worked as a seamstress. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Scalf Godsey, Watauga, with whom she made her home; five grandchildren and one spouse: Michael Godsey, Johnson City, Rebecca Mann and Tony Godsey, both of Watauga, Barbara Cook, Elizabethton and Jeffrey and Shawn Scalf, Panama City, FL; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Scalf, Panama City, FL; ten great-granchildren. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Ernest E. and Nannie Peters Smith. She was a member of Zion Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne William Smith, two sisters, three brothers, and one son-in-law, Roger Clark. Gertrude Lane, age 87, 1204 Broad Street Extension, Elizabethton, TN died Tuesday, August 12, 2003 at The Cambridge House, Bristol, VA following a brief illness. A native of Welch, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late William Milton & Bertha Elizabeth Patterson Woody. Mrs. Lane was a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church, Elizabethton. She was an RN having previously worked at the Franklin Clinic and the Carter County Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Lane is preceded in death by three sisters. She is survived by her husband, Walter Earl Lane, of the home; one son, Thomas Banner, Elizabethton; one stepson, Ronald Lane, Texas; one stepdaughter, Esther Herd, Texas; & one sister, Demple Jones, Ohio. CONNIE VERALEE BURROW CHAPEL Connie Veralee Burrow Chapel, age 67, 190 Vanderbilt Drive, Johnson City, died Friday, July 18, 2003, in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital, following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late W.F. “Bill” and Oma Dalton Burrow. She was preceded in death by a son, Frank D. Chapel, Jr., a great-grandson, Cody Campbell and a brother, Joe Burrow. Mrs. Chapel was a member of Community Fellowship Church and a retired employee of Johnson City Medical Center Hospital where she was manager of the Cafetorium. Survivors include her husband of forty-seven years, Frank Dee Chapel, of the home; a step-son and wife, Richard and Linda O’Quinn, Watauga; two step-granddaughters: Tracy Campbell, Elizabethton and Stacy Keeling, Bristol, TN; two step-great-granddaughters and two step-great-grandsons; a brother, James Burrow, Hampton; two sisters and one brother-in-law: Rose Christine and Rod Hill and Frances Buckles, all of Elizabethton; Special Friends: Ruth McLaughlin, Jane Ray and Mary Ann White; several nieces and nephews also survive. MR. CHARLES R. (BOBBY) LYONS Mr. Charles R. (Bobby) Lyons, age 61, of 608 Locust Street, Elizabethton, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN, following a brief illness. A native of Washington County, he spent most of his life in Carter County. He was the son of the late Henry F. Lyons and a member of Oak Grove Christian Church. Mr. Lyons was a retired carpenter and a former employee of North American Rayon Corporation and Holston Defense. He was a former oil rigger off the coast of Louisiana and a 1960 Graduate of Happy Valley High School. He was an US Army veteran during peacetime. He was preceded in death by his sister, Sandra Kay Adams; his grandparents, Ernest R. & Irene Campbell Townsend and Robert & Mary Ann Grindstaff Lyons. OBITUARY & FUNERAL NOTICE DR. JULIAN TERRELL CAUDILL, SR. Dr. Julian Terrell Caudill, Sr., age 84, 514 Caudill Place, Elizabethton, died Sunday, August 3, 2003 at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Narrows, VA, he was the son of the late Dr. Estell Leftridge “E.L.” & Flora Weatherly Caudill, Sr. Dr. Caudill was a 1940 graduate of the University of North Carolina and a 1951 graduate of the University of Florida School of Pharmacy. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Elizabethton. Dr. Caudill & his wife, who is also a pharmacist, owned & operated Watauga Pharmacy in Elizabethton for 29 years. He was a member of the Elizabethton Rotary Club of Elizabethton, having 48 years of perfect attendance. He was also a Paul Harris Fellow. Dr. Caudill was a member of the Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238 F & AM, the Scottish Rite and the Jericho Shrine Temple. He was a member of the Board of Directors at Security Federal Savings Bank. Dr. Caudill was a World War II army veteran having served in New Guinea & the Philippines in counter intelligence and was with the First Occupational Forces in Japan during World War II. He is preceded in death by one son Terry Caudill; one brother, Dr. E.L. Caudill, Jr. Survivors include, his wife, Dr. Altajane Holden Caudill, of the home; one son, Tom Caudill, Dayton, OH; one daughter & son-in-law, Carolyn Caudill Hazelwood & Kail Hazelwood, Knoxville, TN; three granddaughters, Mara Caudill, Lacayes Haiti; Caryle Clark, Elizabethton; Casey Ross, San Diego, CA; one great grandson, Cannon Michael Clark, Elizabethton, Tn.; one daughter-in-law, Charlotte Caudill, Elizabethton; one sister, Peggy Weiss, Asheville, NC; two special friends, Virginia Caudill, Dayton, OH, and Rhadchanee Ruth, Chicago, IL. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 11, 2003 at Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Yates officiating. Interment will follow in the Cable Cemetery, Butler. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 10, at Tetrick Funeral Home or friends may call at the residence, 222 Swimming Pool Road, Lot #12, Hampton, TN anytime.
