OBITUARY AND FUNERAL NOTICE FOR GLADIOLA E. WHITE Gladiola E. White, age 82, 200 West Doe Ave. Apt. #4, Elizabethton died Monday, June 9, 2003 at Hillview Health Center following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Will and Josie Lewis Nidiffer. She was a member of Lynn Valley Baptist Church and was a former cashier at Kroger, White’s, Publix, A & P, and Wright’s grocery stores. She was preceded in death by her husband, Garrett W. White, December 2, 1945, a daughter, Lois Kay White, 2 brothers, R.L. Nidiffer, Melvin G. Nidiffer, and a sister, Viola Oliver. Survivors include a daughter, Sue White, Elizabethton, a grandson and spouse, Joe and Jennifer White, Elizabethton, a great granddaughter, Cara Emily White, Elizabethton, a special nephew, Gene Oliver, Elizabethton, a special friend, Nancy Jenkins, Elizabethton, several other nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Gladiola E. White, age 82, who died Monday, June 9, will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 11 at Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with Dr. William Duncan and Rev. Dennis Wilson officiating. Music will be under the direction of Dale Williams, soloist and Sue Bowers, organist. The graveside service and interment will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 12, at Caldwell Springs Cemetery. WILLIAM “BILL” A. SHANKLE, JR. William “Bill” A. Shankle, Jr., age 50, 706 Well Street, Elizabethton, died Thursday, May 8, 2003 at his residence following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of Thelma Williams Shankle, of the home, and the late William Arville Shankle, Sr. Mr. Shankle had served in the U.S. Air Force. He was preceded in death by a special friend, Angela Parker. A native of Roan Mountain, she was the daughter of Mckinley and Rosie Brown Jarrett. She was a member of Burbank Free Will Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Jarrett. DONALD GLEN BAKER Donald Glen Baker, age 39, 107 cemetery Hill Lane, Roan Mountain died Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. He was a native of Avery County, NC and had lived in Carter County all of his life. He is the son of Viola King Baker, Roan Mountain, and the late Mack Baker. He was a member of Sugar Hollow Free Will Baptist Church. He gave his heart to God on September 17, 2003. He was preceded in death by a brother, Creed Baker. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Thomas and Viola O’Quinn Rasnick. He was a former employee of North American Rayon Corporation where he worked in Unit I Spinning. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served in World War II. He was preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters. A native of Elizabethton, she was the daughter of the late George and Gertha McRath Bowers. She was a member of Brown’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church. She was a past member of The Missionary Dept. of Brown’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church. She was a past employee of Hammond Organ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, George H. Bowers. A native of Avery County, North Carolina she was the daughter of the late Thomas Oaks and Amanda Garland Calhoun. She was a member of Roan Street Freewill Baptist Church. Mrs. Hicks was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grover L. Hicks, 1966 and a son, Sidney Hicks. Survivors include two daughters, Ella Jarrett, Roan Mountain, Amanda Marie Brackins, Sevierville, TN, seven grandchildren, one great grandson, and all the special friends at church also survive. Mr. Oaks was a member of Morgan Branch Free Will Baptist Church and was self employed as a carpenter and block layer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean conflict. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Hill Oaks, of the home; four daughters: Vicky Roberts, Spruce Pine, NC, Pamela Stout and Deborah Potter, both of Roan Mountain and Donna Oaks, Marion, NC; Two Sons: Sammy Oaks, Elk Park, NC and Johnny Oaks, Elizabethton; Two Sisters: Clarice Hodge, Asheville, NC and Anna Mae Jones, Morganton, NC; one brother: Terry Lyons, Roan Mountain; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
