LILLIE L. STOUT Lillie L. Stout, age 78, 254 Riverview Dr. Bluff City, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at Wellmount Bristol Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. A native of Avery County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Lowery and Rebecca Starling Guy. She was of the Baptist faith and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fleenor Stout, several brothers and sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Penny Deskins, Bluff City, 2 grandsons, Travis Deskins, Andrew Deskins, both of Bluff City, 1 great granddaughter, Gracie Deskins, Bluff City, several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Lillie L. Stout, age 78, 254 Riverview Dr. Bluff City, who died Tuesday, May 20, 2003 will be conducted at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace Elizabethton with Rev. Bobby Stout officiating. The graveside service and interment will be Thursday, May 22, at 11:00 a.m. at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:55 a.m. on Thursday. Obit: George DeYoung George DeYoung, age 68, of 156 Heaton Creek Road, Roan Mountain, died Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at Hallifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach, FL. A native of Munster, IN, he was a son of the late Peter and Mary Benchop DeYoung. Mr. DeYoung was a member and past president of the Fort Lauderdale Christian School, Past Elder of Fort Lauderdale Christian Reform School, Past President of the Roan Mountain Citizens Club, past member of the tourism committee of the Elizabethton Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of McGill Presbyterian Church, Roan Mountain. Mr. DeYoung was a land developer. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in post World War II. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Veenstra DeYoung, of the home, 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell George and Susan DeYoung, Oakland Park, FL, Dwayne and Suze DeYoung, Roan Mountain, Dana and Joan DeYoung, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, one daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Dan Winters, Roan Mountain, 10 grandchildren, 1 sister Norma Hoekema, Munster, IN, 1 brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Gloria DeYoung, Holland, MI, several nieces and nephews also survive. MACK T. ROLLER Mack T. Roller, age 75, 711 Parkway Blvd., Elizabethton, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003 due to injuries sustained in a boating accident in Jefferson County, TN, on Douglas Lake. A native of Unicoi County, he was the son of the late Gordon and Kate Hampton Roller. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Elizabethton. He was a retired teacher from Elizabethton High School and a local businessman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Roller, July, 11, 1998. He was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Roller. Survivors include 2 daughters and 1 son-in-law, Margaret Ann and Bill Bennett, Greeneville, TN, Kathy Demicco, Savannah, GA, 5 grandchildren, Amy Bennett, Greeneville, TN, Eric Bennett, Kingsport, TN, Bradley Demicco, Atlanta, GA, Adam Demicco, Ft. WALTER S. AKERS Walter S. Akers, age 93, 937 West G Street, Elizabethton, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital, following an extended illness. A native of Roanoke, VA, he was the son of the late Walter M. & Annie Dyer Stuart Akers. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Mr. Akers was a retired supervisor at North American Rayon Corporation and was a realtor for Shell & Associates. He was a member of Dashill #238 F&AM; Masonic Lodge of Elizabethton, Aerobatics Club, Toastmasters, and he was active in many other organizations. He was preceded in death on July 9, 1998, by his first wife, Frances Hale Akers; a daughter, Sarah Ann Johnson; twin sons, Walter S. Akers, Jr. and Frank Hale Akers; and two sisters. Survivors include his wife, Berniece Boyd Akers of the home; a step-daughter and her spouse, Glennis and Jack Barrett of Templeton, PA; four grandsons and a spouse, Robert and Ruth Akers of Mountain City, Mark Akers of Fairfax, VA, Scott Akers of Manassas, VA and David Johnson of Beech Mountain, NC; and a granddaughter, Jennie Gabelsberg of Redondo Beach, CA. FRANCES LOUISE HARTLEY FRANCES LOUISE HARTLEY, age 62, 118 Williams Avenue, Elizabethton, was carried away by a mighty host of angels into the arms of Jesus Christ, Friday, June 6, 2003, following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Tennie and Margaret Holt Nidiffer. She was preceded in death by two children, a brother, a brother-in-law, and five grandchildren. Mrs. Hartley was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and a nurse for thirty-three years, retiring from the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. She was a pentacostal minister at the Living By Faith Church for thirteen years. She was also the church mother and secretary. SURVIVORS include her husband, Pastor Dallas Hartley, Sr., of the home; five children and their spouses: Karen and Rick Bailey, Dallas and Melissa Hartley, Jr., Tammy and Eugene Baker, Michael and Patty Hartley and Melissa and Billy Sheets, all of Elizabethton; twenty-one grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters and one brother-in-law: Betty and Rex Simerly, Elizabethton, Kathern Norris, Johnson City and Charlotte Holden, Piney Flats. Two brothers: Tennie Nidiffer, Jr., and Larry Wayne Nidiffer, both of Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Frances Louise Hartley, who died Friday, will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Monday, June 9, 2003, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Davis and Rev. Ray Davis officiating. Music will be under the direction of Sounds of Glory and Tammy Baker, soloist. Interment will follow the service at the Buckles Cemetery. She was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late James Rosscoe and Mable Elizabeth Hopson Cordell. She was a member of Lower Shell Creek Christian Church. Mrs. Clevenger was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Owen Harrison Clevenger, 1991, a sister, Lucille Buck and a niece Jewel Vance. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Monroe Bowers, 1979; a son, Ervin Denver Bowers; a great grand-daughter, Karrissa Setzer and several brother and sisters. Mrs. Bowers was of the Baptist faith. A native of South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Roy J.and Beulah Reynolds. She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Proffitt, a son, C. Terry Proffitt and a sister, Doris Whittimore. Mrs. Proffitt was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church and owner and operator of Ridgewood Barbecue since 1948. Survivors include a son, Larry M.
