Margery Grindstaff McPeake, age 92, formerly of 142 Echo Drive, Elizabethton, TN died Sunday, June 1, 2003 in the Hermitage Health Center, Elizabethton, TN following a brief illness. A native of Butler, TN she was the daughter of the late Joseph Millard and Winnie McQueen Grindstaff. She was an active member of Grace Baptist Church and the Ladies Adult I Sunday School Class. She was a graduate of the Watauga Academy and East Tennessee State University. As an employee of the Johnson County School System, she taught first and second grades for 32 years, primarily at Doeville School. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. Her special interests were gardening and cooking and legions of relative and friends have enjoyed her yeast rolls and signature dishes throughout the years. Mrs. McPeake was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest T. “Jack” McPeake, a sister, Dorothy G. Livingston, a brother, Coolidge L. Grindstaff and a nephew, Joe Grindstaff. She is survived by one sister, Geneva G. Norris, Elizabethton; a sister-in-law, Joy L. Grindstaff, Butler;two step-sons; Terry McPeake and Ronnie McPeake and their families, Augusta, GA and several nieces and nephews,Rick Grindstaff, Butler; Sharon Mooney, Bristol, TN; Lynn Norris, Columbia, SC; Beverly Miller, Atlanta, GA; and Steve Norris, Knoxville, TN. REX S. TOWNSEND Rex S. Townsend, age 77, 109 Townsend Circle, Johnson City, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, unexceptedly at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Hobert Lee and Hattie Hodges Townsend. He was a member of Elizabethton Church of Christ. He was a retired painter with James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home. He was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by a brother, Hobert Townsend. Survivors include his wife, Marcella Carter Townsend, of the home, 1 son, Dale S. Townsend, of the home, 1 daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Richard Highsmith, Hampton, 3 brothers, Ford Townsend, Glen Townsend, Bob Townsend, all of Johnson City, several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Rex S. A native of South Hampton County, VA, he had lived in Elizabethton for the last year. He was the son of Sidney and Elvie Hall Sledge and was of the Holiness Faith. He was a retired mechanic for Best Concrete. He was preceded in death by 1 grandson, Travis Tanner and several brothers and sisters. Mrs. Tiffany Wayne Holdren, age 27, 97 Stover Ridge, Newland, NC, died unexpectedly Saturday, June 28, 2003, at Cannon Memorial Hospital, Linville, NC. A native of Carter County and a graduate of East Tennessee State University, she was the daughter of Carroll Wayne and Vickie Miller Hughes of Roan Mountain. Mrs. Holdren attended Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Mrs. Holdren was employed by Highland Chiropractic Center. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ivan and Lucy Miller and Mack Hughes. In addition to her parents, survivors include her dearly loved husband, Jonathan Robert Holdren and precious daughter, Chloe Isabell Holdren of the home; a sister and brother-in-law, Tabby and Johnny Johnson of Roan Mountain; her grandparents, Holt and Helen Hughes of Roan Mountain; mother and father-in-law, Janice and Donnie Holdren of Newland, NC; three nieces; one nephew; and several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. Elmer B. Sams, Sr., age 92, formerly of 407 East K Street, Elizabethton, TN died Sunday, June 1, 2003 in the Hermitage Health Center following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late William Jackson and Sally Hyder Sams. He was a graduate of Happy Valley High School. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon, former Sunday School teacher and church treasurer. He was a State Farm Insurance agent for 30 years before retiring. He was also a former member of the Elizabethton Lions Club. Mr. Sams was preceded in death by one grandson, Billy Jack Sams in 1973, several brothers and one sister. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Pearl Humphrey Sams of the home, four sons and three daughters-in-law; Terry and Shirlene Sams, North Augusta, SC; B.J. Sams, Little Rock Arkansas; Gene and Sonja Sams and Elmer Sams, Jr. and Frances Sams all of Elizabethton; nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive. BEULAH LEE DAVIDSON DAVIES COCHRAN Beulah Lee Davidson Davies Cochran, age 89, of Oviedo, FL and formerly of Elizabethton, TN went to be with her Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ on January 19, 2003 at Florida East Hospital in Orlando, FL. She was born August 21, 1913 in Tifton, GA, and raised in Tampa, FL. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 43 years, Robert Lee Davies, Sr.; her second husband, Edward Cochran; and a grandson, Thomas S. Davies, III. She was a member of the Elizabethton, TN First Church of the Nazarene, a minister, singer, author and poet. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law; Roberta and Jim Blake of Zephyrhills, FL; Susan Potter of the home and Billy Joe Potter, Roan Mountain, TN; two sons and daughters-in-law; Robert and Lillian Davies of Fayetteville, NC; and Thomas and Lucy Davies of the home; a sister, Juanita Hicks of Tampa, FL, a brother Thomas Eugene Hunter of GA; eight grandchildren; J.
