Michael D. “Catmeat” Hoss, age 55, of 189 Hilton Hill Rd., went to be with the Lord Monday, June 28, 2004 at his residence. A native of Carter County, Mr. Hoss was a son of the late William D. and Pearl Guess Hoss. He graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1967. Mr. Hoss was of the Baptist faith. He was formerly employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs and was a disabled veteran, having served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War. Mr. Hoss was a member of the Captain Lynn H. Folsom Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 2166, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter No. 824 and Disabled American Veterans Association. He had a true compassion toward human life. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him. He was a wonderful man, a wonderful husband and father, and a wonderful brother and stepfather. Survivors are his wife, Teresa Pinnex Hoss of the home, one son, David Hoss of Johnson City, one daughter, Michelle Diana Pearl Hoss of the home, one step-daughter, Randa E. Pinnex of the home, one step-son, Scott Perry, Elizabethton, one granddaughter, Allison Perry, Elizabethton, one brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Geneva Hoss, Elizabethton, and one sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Joe Shell, Elizabethton. The funeral service for Michael D. “Catmeat” Hoss will be conducted at 8:30 p.m. Friday, July 2, 2004 in the Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with Rev. Doug Henshaw officiating. Music will be under the direction of Jerry Barnett. The graveside service and interment will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 2, 2004 at the Mountain Home National cemetery with military honors provided by Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post 2166. Everyone will meet at the funeral home chapel at 12 noon Friday to go in procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Friday prior to the service at the Tetrick Funeral Home or at other times at the residence, 189 Hilton Hill Rd., Elizabethton. Ford Baker, age 82, 200 Crabtree Road, Roan Mountain was called home to be with our Lord on Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at James H. Quillen Veterans Administration Medical Center Hospital. He was the son of the late John and Eva Harris Baker. He was of the Baptist faith and a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served in World War II. He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Baker, a sister, Daisy Townsend, several brothers and sisters at an early age and one granddaughter, a daughter-in-law, Melissa Baker. He was a devoted husband, to Louise Markland Baker, of the home, loving father of four sons, Michael C. Baker, and wife, Cassie, Elizabethton, Johnny R. Baker, Roan Mountain, Karmet Baker, Roan Mountain, Ford J. Baker and wife, Sabrina, Roan Mountain, and two daughters, Nancy Lowe and husband, Rondall, Elizabethton, Deborah Jones and husband, Terry, Roan Mountain, and respected and cherished grandfather of Sharon Melton, Evie Baker, Richard Largent, Angelique Lowe, Scotty Baker, Kody Baker, Joshua Largent, Misty Baker, Katlin Baker, and six great grandchildren, he is also survived by two sisters, Annie Leonard of Roan Mountain, Lorene Wright of Hickory, NC, a sister-in-law, Juanita Baker, Roan Mountain, one brother, Georg Baker, Roan Mountain. The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at Tetrick Funeral Rhododendron Chapel with Rev. Jerry Shelton and Kenneth Baker officiating. Amy LaVonn Slagle, age 79, 301 Ridgecrest Drive, Elizabethton, TN was resurrected into Heaven to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and her husband, Dr. David James Slagle on Wednesday, April 7 following a brief illness. She had lived most of her life in Carter County and was the daughter of the late Joe and Amy Wagner. Mrs. Slagle was a graduate of Science Hill High School. She and her husband, David were married
December 25, 1942 and were married
for a total of fifty-four years. She was an active member of Memorial Presbyterian Church and WIC. She was also a member of the Franklin Dance Club and Women of the Moose. She was a preceded in death by her husband, David James Slagle, a son, John David Slagle and a brother Frank Wesley Wandell. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth “Lisa” Slagle, Shirley Tweed and son-in-law, Dennis Tweed, Limestone, and Thelma Swanson and son-in-law, Greg Swanson, a sister, Shirley Gentry, a brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Betty Wandell and a sister-in-law, Ann Wandell Hensley, and a daughter-in-law, Jeanetta Russo Slagle. Her grandchildren, David Adam Slagle and Stefani Paige Slagle. Sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Nancy and Jack Buck. Several nieces and nephews also survive as well as three special friends, Thelma Bowman, Glenda Adams, and Bonnell Estep and beloved pet, Sadie. Mrs. Pearl Babb, age 85, of 243 Short Coal Chute Rd., Elizabethton, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, she is the wife of the late Marshall L. Babb and a daughter of the late Charlie and Josie Braswell Chambers. Mrs. Babb was a member of the Millers Grove Free Will Baptist Church. She was a homemaker. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three sons, Horace Babb, Harold Babb and Marshall Babb, Jr., two grandsons and one granddaughter. Survivors are eight daughters and six sons-in-law, Della Jean Hensley of Elizabethton, Joann and William Cannon of Elizabethton, Wanda Cline of Roan Mountain, Patricia and Bobby Procise of Wilson, VA, Kay and Gary Ford of Elizabethton, Connie and Maurie Lamore of Elizabethton, Naomi and Steve Barnett of Johnson City, Marsha and Alton Cagle of Glouster, VA, two sons and one daughter-in-law, Ron Babb of the home, Don and Lorraine Babb of Elizabethton, and one sister, Mary Henegar of Johnson City. Thirty-four grandchildren, thirty-six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson also survive. Mrs. Sally Cress Duncan Jones, 4103 89th Avenue North, Pinellas Park, FL, passed away on Thrusday, April 8, 2004 at the Northside Hospital and Heart Institute of St. Petersburg, FL. A native of Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Rufus G. and Mollie McQueen Cress. Mrs. Jones had lived in Florida since 1965. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clifton Duncan and second husband, Clarence E. Jones, three children, twin infant boys and Raymond Duncan, five sisters, Cletta Cress, Floy Daily, Winnie Ornduff, Ruby Wenzel and Jean Wenzel and one brother, Herman Cress. Rev. Hubert “H. B.” Cox, age 77, 238 Dogwood Acres, Hampton, TN, died Sunday, May 9, 2004 at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Harlan County, KY, he had lived in Carter County since 1963. He was a son of the late Daniel M. and Ella Jane Lee Cox. Rev. Cox was a member of Rittertown Baptist Church. He is a former pastor of Butler Baptist Church, Butler, TN and Penelope Baptist Church, Mart, TX, having also held pastorates in churches in Kentucky and Virginia. He is a U. S. Army and U.S. Marine Corp veteran of World War II. He is a former member of the Disabled American Veterans. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, three brothers and one granddaughter. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Jean Meade Cox, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Jim Busby, Axtell, TX; four sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and Mary Faye Slagle Cox of Radcliff, KY, Bob and Kathy Klein Cox of Hamlin, TX, David and Sue Ray Cox of Kingsport, TN, and John and Nancy Johnson Cox of Bowie, MD. She was a native of Johnson County, but had lived in Carter County most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Sam R. and Etta Gregg Bunton. Mrs. Von Cannon was a member of Meadowview Baptist Church, but attended Watauga Point United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker and former cast member of the Wataugans. She was preceded in death by her husband, Denver F. Von Cannon, October 15, 1996 and one daughter Shirley Jean Smith. A native of Avery County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Lou Davis. She was a member of Prayer Tabernacle. Mrs. Holt was a homemaker and also was a former waitress at Hook’s Restaurant. In addition to her mother and grandson, Mrs. Holt is preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Stonecipher & Pansy Baker; two brothers, Bynum Davis & Steve Davis. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late E.F. and Maude Murray Dugger. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker. Mrs. Phillips was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Phillips and one brother, John Dugger. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Doarn and Daisy Miller. She was of the Free Will Baptist Faith.
