Brown

87 year old Newell G. Brown of Chattanooga died Monday. He had lived in the Chattanooga area for the past two years. He was born in Illinois. His family later moved to Madison, Tennessee. Brown and his wife moved to Smithville in the early 1970's where they were active in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Brown was a certified registered nurse and worked at Baptist and Saint Thomas Hospitals in Nashville and occasionally at the hospital in Smithville. He is survived by his wife, Jane Brown. Two sons and daughters-in-law, Bevin and Kathie Brown of Troy, Alabama; and Gary and Mickie Brown of McMinnville. Four grandchildren. A sister, Lois Gott of Florida and a brother, Hoy Brown of Chicago, Illinois. A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the Smithville Seventh Day Adventist Church. Dennis Clark will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the church on Saturday. The Heritage Funeral Home in Chattanooga is in charge of the arrangements. Robinson

Long time Smithville businessman, 61 year old Kent Robinson, owner of Kent's Marathon Service Station, died Monday night at Vanderbilt Medical Center. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Liberty Lodge #77, Cookeville Masonic Bodies, DeKalb County Shriner's Club, Al Menah Temple, and the Nashville Scottish Rites. The funeral will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Terry Little will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. He was preceded in death by a son, Kenny Robinson and his father, Erbie Robinson. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Robinson; his mother, Billie Robinson; and a brother and sister-in-law, Bebo and Kay Robinson all of Smithville. Three sisters-in-law, Donna and her husband Larry Wright of Smithville, Dora Arnold, and Nancy and her husband Steve Jones all of Lebanon. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. The family requests that all donations be made to one of the following in lieu of flowers: DeKalb Foster Care Fund, Lighthouse Christian Camp, New Frontier, Kenny and Kyle Robinson Memorial Fund, or the Shriner's Children's Hospital. The donations may be made at Love-Cantrell Funeral Home.

Hale

82 year old Cappie Hale of Liberty died Friday at his residence. He was a retired employee of the State Highway Department and a member of the Mount Moriah Baptist Church. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Leonard Herman will officiate and burial will be in the Sycamore cemetery in Liberty. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emily O'Conner Hale; two brothers, Willie and Delbert Hale; and two sisters, Alma Hobbs and Dovie Ferrell. Survivors include his wife, Juanita Hale; a sister, Susie Mae Miller; and a sister-in-law, Carolyn Mathis all of Liberty. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m.

Herman

41 year old James Eddie "Shorty" Herman of Florida and formerly of Smithville died Wednesday in Bartow, Florida. He was a nursery worker and a member of the Church of Christ. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Jerry Lynn Lawson will officiate and burial will be in the Gunter Grizzle Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his mother, Thelma Jean Lawson; his father, Alfred Kenneth Herman; two sisters, Caroline and Denise Herman; and a brother, Bobby Lynn Herman; his paternal grandparents, Carrie Pearl and Bob Hallum; and his maternal grandparents, Minnie Bell and Tom Farless. Survivors include a son, Shannon Herman of Woodbury. One brother, Kenny Ray Herman. Four sisters, Branda Kay and her husband Stevie Cripps, Lisa Gail Mingus, and Patricia and her husband Jerry Lawson all of Smithville and Frances Walker of McMinnville. One grandson of Woodbury and several nieces and nephews. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m.

Vanatta

84 year old Wilma Lorene Vanatta of Smithville died Wednesday evening at DeKalb Hospital of an extended illness. She was a retired shirt factory worker and a member of the Bethlehem Community Church. The funeral will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Shannon Cantrell and Mike Satterfield will officiate and burial will be in the Snow Hill Baptist Cemetery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Vanatta; her parents, Jim Page and Mary Jane Cripps Page; a daughter, Fay Pedigo; a son, Mark Vanatta; and a grandson, Jeff Johnson. Survivors include three daughters, Elizabeth and her husband Alton Bain, Dean and her husband Jimmy Johnson, and Billie Sanders all of Smithville. One brother, Brown Page of Smithville. Fourteen grandchildren, James and Doug Young, Sandra and Dickie Bain, Tammy Shehane, Donna Brock, Melissa Murphy, Mark Pedigo, Bobby and Jason Johnson, Misty Cassity, Crystal Thompson, Bradley and Blake Sanders. Twenty four great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren also survive. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.; and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m.

Hudgens

90 year old Margaret Ruth Frasier Hudgens of Sparta died Saturday at NHC of Smithville. The funeral will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Hunter Funeral Home in Sparta. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery. Survivors include two daughters, Kay Ballinger and her husband Carl of Sparta and Gail Webb of Smithville. A sister-in-law, Frances Swift of Dalton, Georgia. Eight grandchildren, Robert Sparkman and his wife Connie of Myrtle Beach, Leigh Ann Green and her husband Andrew of Charleston, South Carolina, David Ballinger of Sparta, Jeff Ballinger of Atlanta, Georgia, Annette Greek and her husband Harry of Smithville, Alan Webb and his wife Lora of Smithville, Amanda Blair and her husband Keith of Smithville, and Heidi Webb of Smithville. Fourteen great grandchildren also survive. Hunter Funeral Home in Sparta is in charge of the arrangements.

Driver

86 year old Minnie Belle Driver of Lebanon died Saturday at Baptist Hospital in Nashville. She was a DeKalb County native, a homemaker and a former employee of Volunteer Manufacturing in Hartsville. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Jesus is the Answer Church, formerly the Watertown Methodist Church. Mark Miller and Mike Potts will officiate and burial will be in the Jones Hill Cemetery. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar Sandlin and Daisy Parker Sandlin; her husband, Taft Driver; a sister, Gertie Irene Tubbs; and an infant sister. Survivors include a daughter, Jerri Reese of Lebanon. A granddaughter, Michelle Milbauer of Lebanon. A great granddaughter, Ashley and her husband Chris Harville of Lebanon. Two great great grandsons, Brian and Alex Harville of Lebanon. She was also the aunt of DeKalb County Trustee Bobbie Young of Dowelltown. Several other relatives and friends also survive. Hunter Funeral Home in Watertown is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be Sunday until 9:00 p.m. and Monday from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.

Robinson

81 year old C.A. "Cliea" Robinson of Smithville died Sunday morning at NHC Healthcare Center in Smithville of an extended illness. He was a retired Transportation Executive for Smithville Freight Lines, a member of the Rotary Club, Smithville Jaycees, the Lion's Club, and the Gideons. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Smithville First United Methodist Church where he was a member.Wallace Caldwell will officiate and burial will be in the Whorton Springs Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Colwell Robinson and a daughter, Anna Sharon Robinson. He is survived by a son, Lowell Robinson of Smithville. A daughter and son-in-law, Charmaine and Dean Poss of Smithville. Two grandchildren, Alan and Suzanna Mitchell. Two step-grandchildren, Byron Poss and Terri Bogle. Three step great grandchildren. Four sisters, Ruth Cantrell of Huntsville, Alabama; Claudie Grove of McMinnville; Audrey Phillips of Ridgetop; and Dian and her husband Calvin McCaleb of McMinnville. Several brothers and sisters-in-law along with nieces, nephews, and special friend, Omega Hayes of Smithville. Visitation will be Monday from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at which time the body will be taken to the church for the funeral. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Crook

94 year old Eva Elizabeth Crook of Smithville died Tuesday at her home of an extended illness. She was a former clerk at Fuston's 5 & 10 and a member of the Elizabeth Chapel Baptist Church. The funeral will be Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Donald Owens and Bill Robertson will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. She was preceded in death by her husband Grady Crook; her parents, George and Maude Clayborn Cubbins; a daughter Athelene Crook; a son, Will Allen Crook; grandsons, Glenn and Gary Crook, brothers, Bill, Walter, and Dalton Cubbins, and sisters, Elsie Driver and Dexie Hooper. She is survived by a daughter, Margie and her husband Donald Smith of Smithville. Six grandchildren, Mike Smith, Marlene Adams, Patricia Arnold, Mark Smith, Brenda Bratcher, and Billy Crook. Sixteen great grandchildren, fifteen great great grandchildren; one brother, Brown Cubbins of Olive Branch, Mississippi; and two sisters, Grace Parsley and Georgia Hendrixson both of Smithville. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m. The family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
