Jim Gantzer

62 year old Jim Gantzer of Smithville died Wednesday at his residence. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and a steam fitter. He was preceded in death by his parents, James H. and Gertrude M. Hay Gantzer. Mr. Gantzer's remains have been cremated. There will be no visitation or services held. Survivors include his wife, Kathy Gantzer of Smithville. Five children, Todd Gantzer of Boston Massachusetts, Jamie Gantzer of Smithville, Todd Zimmerman of Boston Massachusetts, Terri Hockenberry of Lockport, New York, Tamara Dragon of Mocksville, North Carolina. Seven grandchildren and an uncle, Phillip Becker of Cumming, Georgia. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. The family has requested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.

Thelma Nell Cantrell

77 year old Thelma Nell Cantrell of Smithville, former owner and operator of Houston's Jewelry, died Monday at NHC Healthcare Center in Smithville. She was a member of the Johnson's Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Michael Hale will officiate and burial will be in the Johnson's Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from noon until 9:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her husband, Houston Cantrell; her parents, Robert and Mary Ann Johnson Maynard; and two brothers, Howard and Furman Maynard. Survivors include a nephew, Michael Maynard of Sparta. Brothers and sisters-in-law, Hurl and his wife Waltyne Cantrell of Sparta, Magdalene Cantrell of Smithville, Brenda and her husband R.V. Billings of Sparta, Phyllis and her husband Bob Malone of North Carolina, Janice Cantrell of Sparta, Debbie and her husband Jerry Luna of Sparta, and several nieces and nephews also survive. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Mitchell Jones

64 year old Mitchell Jones of Florida died Thursday at his residence. He was retired from the Aetna Insurance Company. Jones also served in the United States Army. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Jones and Pauline Mullican Starnes. He is survived by his wife, Michelle Cannon Jones and a daughter, Michelle Jones both of Florida. Two sons, Paul Jones of Florida and John Mitchell Jones of California. A sister, Janis Martin of Silver Point. Cousins, Glen Gill and Jimmy Mullican both of Smithville and Donna Evans of McMinnville. An aunt, Wilma Greer of Dibrell and a host of other relatives and friends. The family has chosen cremation. The George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Avis Novella Ray

92 year old Avis Novella Ray of Smithville died Saturday at her residence. She was retired from the Smithville Shirt Factory. The funeral will be Monday at 1:00 p.m. at the New Union The Baptist Church where she was a member for 44 years. Darrell Cantrell and Bransford England will officiate and burial will be in the New Union Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Florance Edna Jones Dunham and a son, Gordon Lee Ray. Survivors include her husband, Burnice Ray of Smithville. One daughter, Geraldine and her husband Paul Blankenship of Smithville. One son, Grady and his wife Charlotte Ray of Smithville. Four grandchildren, Paula and her husband Danny Roller of Rock Island, Teresa and her husband Keith Turner of Maryville, Marla and her husband Jimmy Nix of Fayetteville, and Melvin and his wife Melissa Ray of Smithville. One step grandson, Traeton McCoy of McMinnville. Nine great grandchildren, Allison and Daniel Turner, Sarah and Mary Elizabeth Roller, Lynsey, Mallory, and Ethan Nix, Madelyn Rose Ray, and Lane McCoy. One sister, Agnes Dunham of LaFolette. Two brothers, Royce Dunham of LaFolette and James M. Dunham of Nashville. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Juan Carlos Garcia

20 year old Juan Carlos Garcia of Smithville died Monday at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was a construction worker. He was preceded in death by his father, Fidel Garcia Romo. He is survived by his mother, Antonia Garcia of Mexico and a brother, Fabian Garcia of Smithville. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. The body will be sent back to Mexico for burial.

Louise Cripps Lamberson

87 year old Louise Cripps Lamberson of Temperance Hall died Monday at her residence. The body is at the Gordonsville Chapel of Bass Funeral Home where the funeral wil be Thursday at 1:00 p.m. Billy Hale and Serita Martin will officiate and burial will be in the Gordonsville Cemetery. The Lamberson family will receive friends at the Gordonsville Chapel on Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Linda Lamberson of Temperance Hall. A sister, Johnnie Nixon of Carthage. A half sister, Dorothy Malone of Temperance Hall. The Gordonsville Chapel of Bass Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Jessie Lee Junior Pollard

63 year old Jessie Lee Junior Pollard of Smithville died Monday of a sudden illness at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was a Baptist and he served in the National Guard for seven years during the Vietnam War. Pollard was also retired from the Carrier Corporation having worked for 36 years. He was also a mechanic. The funeral will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Michael Hale and Garry Farris will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.; Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.; and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Pollard was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Lee and Zonnie Luna Pollard; his mother-in-law, Nettie Pack; a sister, Dora Fay Pollard; a brother, Eligah Pollard; and his step-mother, Lissie Pollard. Survivors include his wife of 42- 1/2 years, Faye Pollard of Smithville. Two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Janice Pollard and Jerry and Armenta Pollard all of Smithville. A daughter, Brandy Pack of Smithville. Three grandsons, Alex Pollard, and James and Terry Parker all of Smithville. Four brothers, Edd Pollard of Nashville, William Pollard of Smithville, and Charles and David Pollard of Sparta. A sister, Virgie Young of Smithville. Special nephew, Glen Young of Sparta. Two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Leslie Dyer, Sr. of Morrison and Estill Ferrell of Smithville. Many nieces, nephews, and friends also survive. George B. Spencer

90 year old George B. Spencer of Nashville died Saturday. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Whorton Springs cemetery in DeKalb County. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until noon at the Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home in Nashville. He is survived by a daughter, Linda S. and her husband Mike Carpenter of Franklin. Granddaughters, Kimberly Hubbell, Emily and her husband Jim Newton, and Melissa Carpenter. Four great grandsons. Two sisters, Vallie Larson of Irving, Texas and Rita Martinelli of Manchester. A brother, James Spencer of Springfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the charity of your choice. Jerry Clifton Smith

69 year old Jerry Clifton Smith, Pastor of the Smithville Church of the Nazarene, died Friday in Mexico. The funeral will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the Gordonsville Chapel of Bass Funeral Home. Charles Knight and Ron McCormack, District Superintendent of the Nazarene Church, will officiate and burial will be in the Brush Creek Cemetery. The body will be at DeKalb Funeral Chapel in Smithville on Wednesday where the family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. The body will be at the Gordonsville Chapel of Bass Funeral Home Thursday where the family will receive friends after 11:00 a.m. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sarah Pritchett Smith. Children, Randy "Bubba" Smith and his wife Arlene of Brush Creek, Shane Smith and his wife Amy of Gordonsville, Connie Rodriguez and her husband Ruben of Brush Creek, Sonja Allen and her husband Sam of Coalmont, Debbie Bush and her husband James of Gordonsville, and Linda Pritchett of Smithville. Fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren survive along with brothers and sisters, Robert A. and his wife Geraldine Smith of Mount Juliet, Frank D. and his wife Lucille Smith of Lebanon, Sarah Lou and her husband R.L. Payne of Brush Creek, Betty Jo Jones of Lebanon, Rosie and her husband T.J. Jones of Lebanon, and Troy and his wife Estella Smith of Gordonsville. The Gordonsville Chapel of Bass Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to help pay the expense of returning the body from Mexico in care of the Smithville Church of the Nazarene, P.O Box 614, Smithville 37166 or to the Church Fund or to Gideons International.

63 year old Tommy J. Patrick of Smithville died Monday at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was retired from the Murrey Guard Company, a member of the Seventh Day Church of God, and he served in the United States Army. The funeral will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Jim Short will officate and burial will be in the Gardens of Memory. Visitation will be Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary Hillis Patrick and a brother, James Patrick. Survivors include his wife of 45 years Reda Patrick of Smithville. Three daughters, Janice Kaye Patrick and Sandra Rupp both of Indiana. A brother, Barry Jones of Bone Cave and two sisters, Betty Green of McMinnville and Mary Williams of Morrison. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. The family requests that donations be made to the funeral home for funeral expenses in lieu of flowers.
