Vernon Edward Hyde

86 year old Vernon Edward Hyde of Knoxville and a longtime resident of Smithville died Wednesday at his home. He was a member of the Smithville First Baptist Church, the American Legion, and retired teachers. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a teacher, coach, and realtor. The funeral will be Friday at 3:00 p.m. at the Smithville First Baptist Church. Mark Bass will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Friday from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the church. Hyde was preceded in death by his parents, William Edward and Ella Dodd Hyde; a daughter, Teresa Faye Hyde; two brothers, Garnett and Ray Hyde; and a grandson-in-law, Greg Van Dette. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carnell Roy Hyde of Knoxville. Children, Paula and husband David Crossley of Talbott, Rita and husband Keith White of Brentwood, and Eddie and wife Mary Hyde of Knoxville. Seven grandchildren, Carrrie Van Dette, Connie Crossley, Lindsay and husband Bill Cadaret, Andrew Crossley, Mollie Hyde, Abigail Hyde, and Casey Hyde. Three great grandchildren, Joseph Edward Cadaret, Garrett James Van Dette, Tristen Van Dette. One brother, Howard and wife Edna Hyde of California. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Lola Mai Ashburn

83 year old Lola Mai Ashburn of Dowelltown died Tuesday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a Baptist and a retired shirt factory worker. The funeral will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Leonard Herman and Charles Bogle will officiate and burial will be in Whorton Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Elsie Bogle; her husband, William Sampson Ashburn; three brothers, Lem, Bill, and Velmer Bogle; and two sisters, Pauline Sandlin and Emmie Herman. She is survived by thirteen nieces and nephews, Thomas Bogle of Liberty, Brenda Bennett of Lebanon, Marie Derting of Liberty, Elsie Fish of Statesville, Anita Thornton of Smyrna, Lisa Bowen of Smithville, Ricky Herman of Murfreesboro, Randy Bogle of River Watch, Jeff Bogle of Franklin, Karen Fite of Alexandria, Charles Bogle of Greenville, Debbie Bratten of Nashville, and Kathy Bennett of Gordonsville. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Coy Smith Hillis

73 year old Coy Smith Hillis of McMinnville died Wednesday at Alive Hospice of St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of the Moose Lodge in McMinnville and a member of the VFW. Hillis was also a telephone factory worker. A graveside service will be Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Oak Grove cemetery in Centertown. Michael Hale will officiate. No visitation will be held. Hillis was preceded in death by his father, Raymon Hillis and a brother, Arie Hillis. Survivors include two sons, Ron Hillis of Memphis and Ken Hillis of Wabash, Indiana. Two grandchildren. His mother, Grace Harting of Indiana. A sister, Marie Cline of Indiana and a brother, John Hillis of Indiana. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Bro. Bobby Colvert

79 year old Bro. Bobby Colvert of Dowelltown died Thursday at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. He served as an Evangelist/Minister for 50 years and he was an owner/operator of a local business in Smithville. Colvert was also a farmer. He earned his Masters of Divinity from Southern Baptist Seminary. He later founded the Covenant Baptist Church in Smithville. The funeral will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Thurman Seber, Richard Williams, and Bobby Thomason will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 2:00 p.m. Colvert was preceded in death by his parents, Obadiah and Bessie Lee Bass Colvert; his wife, Barbara Colvert; and a brother, James Bass Colvert. Survivors include his children, John and wife Karen Colvert of Murfreesboro and Lou Ann and husband Steve White of Smithville. Six grandchildren, Kelly Colvert and Matt Wiley, Jason Baker Colvert, and Grant Colvert all of Murfreesboro; Camry Lou Colvert White, Carlee Colvert White, and Chloe Colvert White all of Smithville. Three great grandchildren, Kaylin Colvert Wiley, Lyla Dawn Wiley, and Piper Ann Wiley all of Murfreesboro. One brother, Freddy and wife Linda Colvert of Smithville. Brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Betty Herndon of Smithville, Bill Baker of Cassville, and Mary Louise Fitzgerald of Lafayette, Indiana. Floyd Nokes

76 year old Floyd Nokes of Smithville died Wednesday at NHC of Smithville. He was self-employed, a U.S. Navy veteran, and a member of the New Bildad Primitive Baptist Church. The funeral will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Ricky Arnold will officiate and burial will be in the New Bildad Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the service at 11:00 a.m. Nokes was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Hallie Mai O'Conner Nokes; his wife, Ruby Nokes; five brothers, Walter, Johnny, Sam, Bill, and Bob Nokes; and a sister, Betty Bogle. Survivors include nieces and nephews, Thomas and Annie Bogle of Liberty, Lucion and Mary Nokes of Temperance Hall, Brenda and Thurman Bennett of Lebanon, Marie and Kenneth Derting of Liberty, Elsie and Ray Fish of Statesville, Anita Thornton of Smyrna, Jimmy and Debbie Nokes of Sweetwater, Lisa and Dwayne Bowen of Smithville, and Diane Nokes of Washington, D.C.. Special friend and companion, Jean Goodwin of Smithville. Sister-in-law, Moe Dean Nokes of Sweetwater and a dear special little friend Bentley "Spud" Whatley of Liberty. Donald Sheets

92 year old Donald Sheets of Smithville died Wednesday at his residence. He was a retired Aircraft Engineer and a Catholic. Sheets was also a member of the American Legion and a World War II veteran, having served in the Army and Air Force. The funeral will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church. Father David Cooney will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be Sunday from 4-8 p.m. with the Rosary service at 6:30 p.m. and Monday from 9-10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Margaret Sheets. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Sheets of Smithville. Six children, Margaret and husband John Boehnlein of Indiana, Jane and husband Jerry Allsop, Patricia and husband Carl Muia, and Donald J. and wife Sue Sheets all of South Bend, Indiana, Thomas J. Sheets of San Diego, California, and Laura and husband Bryan Vanlandingham of Granger, Indiana. Twelve grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. One sister, Marjorie Baldini of Naples, Florida. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. The family requests that donations please be made to the Paralyzed Veterans of America organization, in lieu of flowers.

Gary Dale Gibbs

56 year old Gary Dale Gibbs died Monday at his residence. He lived in Dowelltown but he spent most of his life in Smith County where he was raised. He was an assembler at Shiroki North America and was a member of the HAM radio operators. The funeral will be Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Wilson Williams will officiate with burial in Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the service. He was preceded in death by a brother, Glenn Gibbs. He is survived by his wife Carol Cook Gibbs of Dowelltown; seven children, Robbie Strayn, Jennifer Bain, April Strayn Lee, all of Smithville; Shane, Dale and Tara Gibbs, all of Smith County, and Nathan Gibbs. Parents, Arlis and Louise Gibbs of Smith County. Two brothers, Farris and Roger Gibbs; three sisters, Teresa McMillian, Angie Henry, and Sandy Gibbs all of Smith County. Nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a host of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, and nephews also survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Jack Eugene Estes

Jack Estes
88 year old Jack Eugene Estes of Smithville died Saturday at Alive Hospice Center of St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. Estes was owner and operator of Estes Supermarket for over 30 years and he served as Assessor of Property in DeKalb County from 1984 to 1996. He was also a member of the Smithville First Baptist Church. A memorial service will be Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Terry Fesler will officiate. Visitation will be Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the service at 2:00 p.m. Estes was preceded in death by his parents, Brackett and Mary Eva Hendrixson Estes. He is survived by his wife, Doris Estes of Smithville. Three children, Tarron, Mark, and Steven Estes. Three grandchildren, Gage, Jonathan, and Hannah Estes. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. The family asks that donations be made to Tammy Horsley, the caretaker of Mr. Estes or to the Indian Creek Youth Camp, in lieu of flowers.

Hassie Mai Smith Osment

94 year old Hassie Mai Smith Osment of McMinnville died Thursday at her home. She was born in Warren County. Osment was a member of the Short Mountain Church of God and a homemaker. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home. Clifford Daniel, Charlie Stanton, and Steve Osment will officiate and burial will be in the Gunter-Grizzle Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Sunday until the time of the service. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hawley and Mary Walker Smith; husband, Selmer Osment; son-in-law, Robert Wade; daughter-in-law, Linda Osment; granddaughter, Velba Kay Wade; grandson, Jeffery Osment; two brothers, Lloyd Brown Smith and George Smith; and two sisters, Estelee Cope and Bertha Goff. Survivors include children, Macon Osment Wade of McMinnville, Bratton and wife Louellen Osment of McMinnville, Ernest and wife Betty Osment of Woodbury, Joe Dorris Osment of Smithville, Roy and wife Lela Osment of Woodbury, and Patsy and husband Peanut McBride of McMinnville. A brother, Edward and wife Jean Patterson of McMinnville. Twenty one grandchildren, thirty eight great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren also survive. Woodbury Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

54 year old Glenn Loyd Cantrell of Smithville died Thursday at Centennial Medical Center. He was a Baptist. a U.S. Army veteran, a retired truck driver from Darrell Bryan Trucking and Kent's Texaco Service Station. The funeral will be Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Nick Pelham will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 3:00 p.m. He was preceded in death by his father, Gentry Gregory Cantrell; paternal grandparents, Horace and Euna Cantrell; and maternal grandparents, Earl Gary and Bonnie Gay Flatt. He is survived by a son, Chris Cantrell of Smithville. Mother, Jean Gay Cantrell of Smithville. Two sisters, Eunice and husband Rick Ramsey of Alexandria and Melissa and husband Melvin Ray of Smithville. One brother, Jerry and wife Patty Cantrell of Smithville. Several nieces and nephews survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. The family asks that donations be made for burial expenses to the funeral home in lieu of flowers.
