Chester Earl Sewell

84 year old Chester Earl Sewell of Sparta died Saturday at Erlanger North Hospital in Chattanooga. Sewell was born in Willow Grove, Tennessee, the son of the late Roy A. Sewell, Sr. and Dovie Ann (Watson) Sewell. He was a member of the Findlay Church of Christ in Sparta, a lifelong farmer, and a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. The funeral will be Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at the Findlay Church of Christ in Sparta. Dwight Fuqua will officiate and burial will be in Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Oak Lawn Funeral Home and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the church. Donations may be made, in lieu of flowers, to the Short Mountain Bible Camp at the Findlay Church of Christ or at the Oak Lawn Funeral Home. Survivors include a daughter, Lois Grizzell and her husband Gary of Cookeville. A son. Charles Sewell and his wife Laurie of Cookeville. His former wife, Marie Sewell of Sparta. Five step-daughters, Janie Foster and her husband Jerry of Smithville, Ellen Gibbs and her husband Bobby of Sparta, Helen Hensley of Sparta, Bonita Marcom and her husband Lyndon of Sparta, and Brenda Johnson of Sparta. Two brothers, Roy Sewell and his wife June of Sparta and C.C. (Cap) Sewell and his wife Alice of Algood. Two sisters, Frances Gillen and her husband Charles of Sparta and Ruth Payne of Algood. Six grandchildren, Mickey Sewell, Cory Sewell, Jana Sewell, Tyler Grizzell, Jalon Foster, and Loren Foster. Five great grandchildren also survive. Oak Lawn Funeral Home in Sparta is in charge of the arrangements.

Potter Young

65 year old Potter Young of Smithville died Monday evening at his residence. He was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church and a retired truck driver for Knowles and Sons Nursery. A graveside service will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at DeKalb Cemetery. Bransford England will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.; Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.; and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. He was preceded in death by his father, Magness Young and a sister, Peggy Maples. Survivors include a son, Richard and his wife Kim Young of Smithville. A daughter, Donna and her husband Brent Turner of Smithville. His mother, Annie Laura Young of Smithville. Grandchildren, Derek Young and Sydney Turner both of Smithville. Brothers, Kenneth and his wife Susan Young, Paul and his wife Pam Young, and Phillip and his wife Tammy Young all of Smithville. A niece, Laura and her husband Brian Hall of Smithville and a host of relatives and friends also survive. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Ronnie Johnson

54 year old Ronnie Johnson of Smithville died Thursday morning at the Alive Hospice at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. He was affiliated with the Allen's Chapel United Methodist Church and more recently with the Alexandria First Baptist Church. He was retired from Hardaway Construction. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Curt Waggoner will officiate and burial will be in the Hillview Memorial cemetery in Alexandria. Visitation will be Saturday from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene A. and Heardie Belle LeFevre Johnson. Survivors include his wife, Jeanie Sue Johnson of Smithville. A sister, Kathy and her husband J.B. Bain of Smithville. A half brother, Michael Hendrixson of Florida. An uncle, Junior LeFevre of Cookeville. An aunt, Lucille Sutton of Hermitage. His father-in-law and mother-in-law, Earl and Norma Sowell of Alexandria. Sisters-in-law, Marilyn Keaton of Smithville and Diane Patton of Indiana. Brothers-in-law, Bill and his wife Angelai Sowell of Lebanon and Randy Sowell of Alexandria. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins also survive. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Hazel Caplinger

88 year old Hazel Caplinger of Liberty died Wednesday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was the retired owner and operator of Caplinger's Grocery. She was also a member of the Memorial Baptist Church on Dale Ridge. The funeral will be Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. A graveside service will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Junior Ellis and Gary Caplinger will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. until service time at 7:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Troy and Ova Bell Martin Jones; her husband, James Monroe Caplinger; a son, Donnie Caplinger; two brothers, Buford and Jimmy Jones; and two sisters, Margaret Hendrixson and Gladys Slagle. Survivors include three grandchildren, Rusty and Ginger Caplinger and Mitzi Bradford all of Smithville, and Tracy and Jenna Caplinger of Auburntown. Eight great grandchildren. Two brothers and sisters-in-law, McKinley and Marguerite Jones and Troy, Jr. and Sally Jones all of Liberty. One sister, Nellie Pezzani of Michigan. A daughter-in-law, Linda and Hugh Lawrence of Smithville and a host of nieces and nephews. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

81 year old Ileana J. Herndon of Smithville died Tuesday at NHC Healthcare Center. She was a homemaker. A graveside service will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Kent Smithson will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. at Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Anna Swain Griffin and husbands, Robert Byrd and Robert "Bob" Herndon. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Kent Smithson of Smithville. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

55 year old Steve C. Turner of Smithville died Sunday at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was a Baptist and a Contractor. The funeral will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Virgil Hibdon, Jr. will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.; Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m; and Thursday from 9:00 a.m.until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Adcock Turner of Smithville. A daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Grady Phillips of Smithville. A son, Cory Turner of Smithville. Two grandchildren, Baylee and Ashley Phillips of Smithville. His parents, JohnnIe and Mildred Webb Turner. His mother-in-law and father-in-law, Earl and Jo Doris Young Adcock. A brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kevin and Judy Adcock of Smithville. Several aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces, and a host of friends survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. 40 year old Lisa Ann Devault of Smithville died Monday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a member of the Liberty United Methodist Church. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Michael Hale will officiate and burial will be in the Mount Ararat Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until the service at 2:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her father, Alvie Estes. Survivors include daughters, Carrie DeVault and Samantha DeVault both of Smithville. Step-children, Mackie DeVault and Johnny DeVault both of Smithville. A grandchild, Lakeisha Fullilove of Smithville. Step grandchildren, Dana Madison Chandler, Chelsie Lawrence, Tyler Chandler, and Ashlynn DeVault. Her mother, Dixie Sweeton of Smithville. Sisters, Doreen Reece of Smithville, Kathy Chapman of Liberty, and Jenna Murphy and Patsy McCoy both of Smithville. Brothers, Jimmy, Jerry, and Ricky Estes all of Smithville; and a special friend, Mary Lou Hale of Smithville. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. The family asks that donations be made to DeKalb Funeral Chapel to help with funeral expenses, in lieu of flowers.

64 year old Frankie White Anderson of McMinnville and formerly of Smithville died Sunday at the All Care Home in McMinnville. He was a nurseryman. A graveside service will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Whorton Springs Cemetery. Junior Hibdon will officiate. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vander Anderson and Linnie Ferrell McMahan. Survivors include a daughter, Linnie Ann Lattimer of McMinnville. Two sons, Trent and Floyd Anderson of McMinnville. Nine grandchildren. One brother, Paul Anderson of McMinnville. One sister, Josie Hobbs of Liberty. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Johnnie Spence

91 year old Mrs. Johnnie Spence of Alexandria died Sunday at DeKalb Community Hospital. The body is Avant Funeral Home in Alexandria where the funeral will be held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. Tim Brown will officiate and burial will be in the Hillview Memorial cemetery in Alexandria. The Spence family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until the service time at 1:00 p.m. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Delilah and Tom Battan of Brentwood. Three grandchildren, Rachel, Sarah, and Andrew Battan. A step-son, Jerry Spence of Hendersonville. Sisters, Lois Spencer and Patsy Jones both of Liberty. Avant Funeral Home in Alexandria is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made, in lieu of flowers, to the Alexandria Church of Christ.

Gladys Cantrell Braswell

93 year old Gladys Cantrell Braswell of Smithville died Thursday morning at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a member of the Smithville First Baptist Church for 71 years. Braswell was also retired from Val-Dor shirt factory. The funeral will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Smithville First Baptist Church. Mark Bass, Ray Ridgeway, and Bill Palmitter will officiate and burial will be in Whorton Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. at the church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Minnie Tramel Cantrell; her husband, Matthew Allen Braswell, Jr.; an infant son, Donald Allen Braswell; brothers, Dewey Cantrell and Lonnie Cantrell; and sisters, Mertie Curtis, Lillie Cantrell, and Dorcas West. She is survived by children, Mike Braswell of Smithville, and Donna Braswell and Phyllis Braswell Frost both of Murfreesboro. A grandson, Charles David Frost, Jr. of Murfreesboro. A brother-in-law, Maurice Braswell of Smithville and several nieces and nephews. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
