SONS, Robert "Bobby" Harold, 74, a former resident of Franklin County passed away April 11, 2005 at Slidell Memorial Hospital, where he became a patient after suffering a massive stroke at his Slidell, Lousiana residence.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Sons worked as a cook aboard a sea tugboat off the shores of Alaska. He previously made his home in New Orleans before moving to Slidell. He was of the Catholic faith.
Mr. Sons was born in Cowan, Tennessee on Feb. 11, 1931, the fourth child of the late Auzy Lee and Minnie Berryhill Sons. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Elizabeth, and a brother, William Auzy Sons.
He is survived by one brother, Charles E. (Ruth) Sons Sr., of Winchester; a sister in law, Rita Sons of Madison, Tennessee; several nieces and nephews; and Carolyn Kieger, a close companion for more than 20 years.
A memorial graveside service will be held at Montgomery Cemetery in Cowan on Saturday, April 23 at 10 a.m. Father Dexter Brewer will officiate.

MCKINNEY, Willie Mae, age 79 of Kingsport, Tennessee, passed away Monday, April 11, 2005 at the Brookhaven Manor, following an extended illness. Mrs. McKinney was a native of Marion County, married in 1939, moved to Winchester, Tennessee and lived there for 40 years. She was a member of the Little Mountain Church of Christ. She was a homemaker, loved cooking, gardening, quilting, sewing and painting. When it came to flowers, "Granny" had a "green thumb." She worked at Lanier Clothing for 19 years. She and her husband, Carl, moved to the Tri-City area in 1979. Mrs. McKinney is preceded in death by her husband, of 66 years, Carlton C. McKinney, who died on March 2, 2005; her parents, William and Stellie Hicks Tate; brothers, Arthur and Ernest Tate; a sister, Ida Tate Yell; grandparents, Benjamin Franklin and Narrie Cissy Lane Tate; grandson, Chad Milam; and great-grandson, Dusten Weaver. Survivors include: a son and daughter-in-law, Clayton E. and Jewell A. McKinney of Kingsport; three daughters, Sue Milam, Jan and Pete Goforth, of Kingsport and Kay McKinney of Brunswick, Ga.; five grandchildren, Brian C. McKinney, Brent J. McKinney, Connie Weaver, Scott Milam and Jeremiah Seal; five great-grandchildren, Austin Weaver, Chelsea Burdett, Jeffrey Milam, Amber Milam and Dalton Milam; and a brother, Ben Tate of Gauetti Laager. Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at 3 p.m. at the Whitwell Memorial Funeral Home with the Reverend Peter Wesson officiating. MONG, Thelma E. Commers, age 81, formerly of Winchester, Tennessee, died Saturday, April 9, 2005. She was living in Union City, Indiana at the time of her death. She is the daughter of the late Ruffus Commers and Naomi Commers. She is survived by three sons, Sonny Smith, Gary Smith and Terry Smith, all of Union City, Indiana; two sisters, Evelyn Commers Autery and Celeste Commers Hice; and two brothers, Ray Commers and Harmon Commers, all of Winchester. A memorial service was conducted on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 in Union City, Indiana.
DUCKWORTH, Walton "Bud," age 79 of Estill Springs, Tennessee died Monday, April 11, 2005 at his residence. He was born in Marshall County, Tennessee and was the co-owner of Cumberland Termite Company. Mr. Duckworth was a song leader for 38 years at the Elk River Baptist Church. He was a 60-year cancer survivor and a member of the Multi-County Cancer Support Network. He was the founder and co-owner of Cumberland Termite Company in Estill Springs. As an active outdoorsman and lover of nature, his hobbies included fishing, hunting and horseback riding. He is survived by his wife, Willie Duckworth of Estill Springs; a son, Dwight (Stacey) Duckworth of Estill Springs; two daughters, Tappiann (Mike) Hopkins of Winchester and Connie Duckworth of Winchester; and three grandchildren, Rebecca Caroline Duckworth, Walton Lee Duckworth and Corey Michael Hopkins. She was born in Hickman County, Tennessee and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonard Gregory. He was born in Buncomb, Georgia and was a Physicist, retired from NASA. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Joann Wright of Lynchburg; two daughters, Maria Cowart of Huntsville, Ala. and Mary Wen Carroll of Dothan, Ala.; a son, Jerry Len Wright of New Market, Ala.; a sister, Cladys Coggins of Tallapoosa, Ga.; a brother, Marion Wright of Buchanan, Ga.; and nine grandchildren. GRIGGS, Richard Lamar "Buddy," 1942-2005, died Sunday morning, April 10, 2005 at age 62, of complications of pancreatic cancer. He was the son of the late Henry Allen Griggs and Mary Jane Griggs. Survived by a sister, Mary Griggs Dodd Maxwell of Cowan; a brother, Dr. Johnny K. Griggs of Lexington, Ky.; four children, Richard Griggs, Jr. of Antioch, Susan Rodriguez of Pegram, Rachel Love of Smyrna and Kristy Griggs of Antioch; three grandchildren, Michael, Mason and Maverick Rodriguez; eight nieces and nephews. SIMPSON, Leta, age 90 of Winchester, Tennessee, passed away Tuesday morning, April 12, 2005 at the Beverly Healthcare Center. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Leonard and Neely Crownover Finney, her husband, Clarence Simpson and her brother, Raymond Finney. She is survived by her sister, Reba Garner of Winchester; nieces, Dixie Cunningham and Bobbie Sue Pack, both of Winchester; nephews, Raymond Finney, Jr of Maryville and David Finney of Knoxville. The graveside service for Mrs. Simpson will be conducted on Friday, April 15, 2005 at 2 p.m. (EST) at the Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee with Keith Shown officiating. BISHOP, Jones H., Jr. (Bish), age 84, passed away on Monday, April 11, 2005. Bish was born in Jackson County, Alabama on April 3, 1921. Mr. Bishop was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Stella Gray (Freeman) Bishop; his parents, Jones and Evie (Precise) Bishop; one brother, Roy (Cotton) Bishop; a sister, Neta Bishop Grooms; and a sister-in-law, Odell (Phillips) Bishop. He is survived by four brothers, J.C. Bishop of Park City, Tenn., Aubrey Bishop of Tullahoma, Bill (Aretta) Bishop of Huntland and Charles (Rachael) Bishop of Bonita Springs, Fla.; two sisters, Freida (Orban) Stewart of Huntsville, Ala. and Sybil (Lee) Hinman of Huntsville, Ala. He is also survived by one brother-in-law, Sam Grooms of New Hope, Ala. and one sister-in-law, Vivian (Bill) Hayes of Huntland; and numerous loving nieces and nephews that meant a lot to Uncle Bish. He also leaves behind many special friends and acquaintances. Bish graduated from Jackson County Alabama High School in 1941. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans aboard U.S. Navy ships until the end of World War II. He was proud of his service to his country. Bish was in business in Ft. Myers, Fla. from 1947 to 1962. He moved to Tennessee in 1962 and retired from AEDC of Tullahoma, Tenn. Funeral services were conducted at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home in Winchester, Tenn. on Thursday, April 14, 2005 at 11 a.m. Interment was in the Winchester Memorial Park.
