Dorothy E. Brewer

CHURCH HILL -- Dorothy E. Brewer, age 69, Church Hill, died Sunday, July 9, 2000, at Church Hill Care and Rehab Center following an extended illness with cancer.
She was a member of Smyrna Independent Baptist Church and was very active in children’s ministries for most of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John E. and Alice Elizabeth Elmore; and two sisters, Maxine Baker and Iva Allen.
She is survived by her husband, Lyle G. Brewer of the home; three daughters, Elizabeth E. Porter, Westchester, OH, Commander Deatri L. Brewer, Fairfax, VA, U.S. Navy Reserve and Dorothy L. Schreck, Danielsville, GA; a son, Chief Petty Officer Lyle G. Brewer Jr., U.S. Navy; two sons-in-law, James Preston Porter and Steven Schreck; a daughter-in-law, Takae Miukami Brewer; three grandchildren, Michelle Elizabeth Porter, Melissa Ann Porter and David Steven Schreck; a sister, Lucille Elmore, Bedford, IN; a brother, Roy Everett Elmore, Missoula, MT; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Colboch-Price Chapel with Rev. James Laney and Dr. C.F. Keen officiating. Interment will follow in the Robinette Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6 - 8 p.m. Friday, July 14, 2000, at Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville.
McHurst Carpenter
Died: 07/11/2000
MOORESBURG -- McHurst Carpenter, age 83, Mooresburg, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at Johnson City Medical Center.
He was a member of Mooresburg United Methodist Church. He was retired from Jeffrey Chain Corp. and was also a life-long farmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Ida Carpenter; and sisters. Christine Carpenter, Ann Stafford and Jewel Mincey.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Carpenter, Mooresburg; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Bronson Collins of Florida; a son and daughter-in-law, Junior and Brenda Carpenter, Morristown; and grandsons, Mitch Collins of Florida and Eric Carpenter, Morristown.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 14, 2000, at Colboch-Price Chapel with Rev. Denver Davidson officiating. Interment will follow at Dalton Cemetery, Bean Station.
The family will receive friends 6 - 9 p.m. Thursday, July 13, 2000, at Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville.
James H. Gulley

BULLS GAP -- James Howard Gulley, age 72, Bulls Gap, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at his home.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of VFW Post #9683.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Gulley; parents, Robert and Gertrude Gulley; a brother, Lynn Gulley; and two nephews.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Susie and Phillip "Sarge" Gentry, and Debbie and Chris Hybarger, all of Bulls Gap; three grandchildren, Tiffany and Phillip Gentry and Justin Hybarger, all of Bulls Gap; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Kathleen Gulley, Morristown, Ira Lee and Annie Mae Gulley, George and Imogene Gulley and Tom Gulley, all of Bulls Gap, William "Dub" Gulley, Greeneville, John and Linda Gulley, Clarksville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mabel McDermott, Morristown, Betty Rhea, Bulls Gap, Mary and Charles Long, Mount Carmel, Georgia and Havard Street, White Pine; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends 7 - 9 p.m. Friday, July 14, 2000, at Wilson Funeral Home, Bulls Gap.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 15, 2000, in the funeral home chapel with Revs. John Arnott and Mike Sledge officiating. Interment will follow in Long Cemetery.
Ethel Ferrell
Died: 07/15/2000
ROGERSVILLE -- Ethel Ferrell, age 90, Rogersville, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center following an extended illness.
She was a member of Big Creek Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Ferrell; parents, Robert L. and Nocia Thomas; three children, Margaret, Harley and Louella Ferrell; daughter-in-law, Margaret Ferrell; brothers, Robert, Andy, J.C. and Neil Thomas; and sister, Easter Barrett.
She is survived by five children, Miller C. and wife Rosezella Ferrell, Hobert E. Ferrell, Frankie and husband Rev. Fred White, J.C. and wife Mary Ferrell, and Conner Ferrell, all of Rogersville; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Charlie and wife D.V. Thomas, Rogersville; sister-in-law, Clara Thomas, Rogersville; special friend, Mary Cook, Rogersville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at Colboch-Price Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Dennis Price, Randall Burton and Fred White officiating. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at Hawkins County Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call any time at the residence of Frankie and Fred White, 188 Meadowview Road, Rogersville, and from 6 - 8 p.m. Tuesday prior to the services at Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville.
Gerald M. Gibson
Died: 07/13/2000
ROGERSVILLE -- Gerald Monroe Gibson, age 53, Rogersville, was killed in the line of duty Thursday, July 13, 2000.
He was employed by the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Department, with nine years reserve experience and four years full-time service. He was also a member of the Tactical Unit and was observer/spotter in the Department’s Aviation Unit. He served as class president of the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy in June 1997 and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He was retired from the U.S. Army, having served his country during the Vietnam War, receiving the Purple Heart, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with a Palm, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Overseas Bars. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Amos and Alice Gibson; brothers, Elmer Gibson and Mathis Gibson; sisters, Martha Carmack, Elsie Cody and Retha Lawson.
He is survived by his wife, Roxie Marglene (Margie) Gibson, Rogersville; two daughters, Jennifer Yvonne Gibson of the home and Marcie Ann Gibson Begley, Rogersville; special son-in-law, Jason Begley, Rogersville; special nephew, Robert Allen Lawson of the home; five brothers, Jack Gibson of Maryland, Ransom Gibson of Virginia, Silas Gibson of Tennessee, Troy Lee Gibson and Jimmy Lee Gibson, both of Sneedville; a sister, Oralee Justice, Rogersville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at East Rogersville Baptist Church with Rev. Woody Tackett officiating. Interment will follow in the Andy Gibson Cemetery, Sneedville.
The Kingsport Police Department will serve as honor guard. The Tennessee Army National Guard and U.S. Army will also be represented. The Knox County Sheriff’s Department will honor Mr. Gibson with a fly-over.
The family will receive friends 5 - 8 p.m. Monday, July 17, 2000, at East Rogersville Baptist Church.

Martin D. Hunley
Died: 07/14/2000
ROGERSVILLE -- Martin Dale Hunley, Rogersville, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was a member of Keplar Missionary Baptist Church and was retired from Tennessee Eastman Company.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Myrtle Hunley; two sons, Homer (Jr.) Dykes and Donald Dykes; two grandsons, Lynn and Dennis Dykes; parents, Dee and Geneva Hunley; his beloved twin brother, Hale; and three dear sisters, Viola Archer, Opal Greer and Etta Lee Hayes.
He is survived by a son, Martin Gerald Hunley and wife Yvonne, Kingsport; daughters-in-law, Gladys Jaynes, Rogersville, and Carmen Dykes, Kingsport; five sisters, Mrs. George (Helen) Davis, Kingsport, Mrs. Fred (Ruby) Russell, Mrs. Roy (Jo) Trent, Mrs. Gladys Tilson, and Mrs. Ressie Britton, all of Rogersville; granddaughters, Becky and husband Jon, Rock Hill, SC, Tracy Blair, Kingsport, Robert Blair, Tell City, IN, Cheryl and husband Sylvain Bota, Knoxville, Devonia and husband Dan Cochran, Rogersville, and Ione Janet Dykes, Kingsport; a grandson, Lonnie Dykes, Rogersville; five great-granddaughters, Christy and Brittany Lee, Rock Hill, SC, Olivia and Avery Blair, Kingsport, and Wendi Hicks, Rogersville; a great-grandson, Martin Willow Hunley-Bota, Knoxville; two great-great-grandsons; several nieces and nephews; and many cherished friends.
Funeral services will be held 8 p.m. Monday, July 17, 2000, at Colboch-Price Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Fred White and Frank Lynch officiating. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at Highland Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be Tip Herron and Mike Herron. Because of his great love for children, memorials may be made to the Memorial and Honor Program, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.
