NANCY (HAYNES) BROWN
Funeral services for Mrs. Nancy (Haynes) Brown, 93, of Ten Mile, were conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 29, 2004, from the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home in Athens, with Herbert and Sarah Cox officiating.

Mrs. Brown died Wednesday, May 26 at Brookewood Nursing Home in Decatur. She was a native of Wilkes Barre, PA, and a resident of Meigs County, TN, since 1972.

She was a graduate of Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania and taught school in Pennsylvania, New York, and Tennessee. She resigned her teaching job in Wilkes Barre in 1940 and came to Tennessee to become a house mother in an orphan home for girls in Livingston. During this time she visited schools in three counties and taught Bible stories to children using flannel graf pictures.

In 1942, she and Rev. Ray F. Brown were married. Nancy was gifted in music and taught many boys and girls to play the piano and the organ. She also organized children choirs, at different times taking her choir of children to the State Hymn Festival. A few times she and her choir won the Blue Ribbon.

Mrs. Brown was a tireless church worker and was able to fill in where there was a need. She served for a number of years as director of the YWA in the Watauga Baptist Association and also in the McMinn-Meigs Baptist Association taking bus loads of young girls to the state and national conventions.

She and her husband, Ray, had Bible studies in two nursing homes in Sweetwater, two in Athens, and one in Decatur for many years. She served as pianist and song leader for those studies.

We rejoice in the memory of nine people making profession of faith in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. What a pleasure it was to work with the senior citizens in Decatur for many 26 years. She also served as "Pink Lady" one afternoon each week for seven years at Athens Regional Medical Center.

She was the daughter of the late John Godfrey and Minnie (Shook) Haynes.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Rev. Ray F. Brown, of Ten Mile; a son, Paul D. Brown of Glenrock, WY; a brother, Jack Haynes and his wife, Helen, of Nanuett, NY; 3 grandchildren, Julie Goodman of Englewood, David Brown of Lenoir City, and Charlie Brown of Pennsylvania; and 11 great grandchildren.
