STEELE, Joe Thomas Victore, age 79 of Winchester died Saturday, July 1, 2006 at Southern Tennessee Medical Center in Winchester. He was born in Belvidere and was a farmer. Mr. Steele was preceded in death by his parents, Melissa Sisk Steele and Levi Steele. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lee Steele of Winchester; four daughters, Lisa Lee Wiseman, Virgie May Steele and Connie Lynn Steele, all of Winchester and Marie Ellen Steele of Decherd; three sons, Larry Junior Steele of Winchester, James Monroe Steele of Moore County and Ricky Allen Steele of Huntland; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. PENDER, Edward Craigue, age 28 of Huntsville, AL died Sunday, July 2, 2006 at his residence. He was born in Winchester, the son of Dr. Charles W. Pender, Jr. and Anne Marie Shelton Pender of Decherd. Mr. Pender was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Benjamin F. Shelton of Manchester and Charles W. Pender, Sr. of Cowan. In addition to his parents, Mr. Pender is survived by a son, Dylan Matthew Mandry of Huntsville, AL; two brothers, Benjamin Shelton (Jennifer) Pender of Decherd and Daniel Sheridan Pender of Florida; a nephew, James M. BONNER, Hazel Lee, age 65 of Shelbyville, passed July 2, 2006 at Middle Tennessee Medical Center in Murfreesboro. She is the daughter of the late Willie L. and Elaine Lanier. She is survived by a son, Victor (Trina) Gill; grandson, Tony Solomon; three sisters, Ruby Ewing, Anne Wilhoite and JoAnne (T.J.) Frazier; two brothers, James (Jane) Lanier and Thomas (Paulette) Lanier, all of Shelbyville; three aunts, Irish (Clifford) Langham of Huntsville, AL, Laura Gilliam of Denver, CO and Vernia Ridley of Nashville; an uncle, Joe Lanier of Nashville; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews and friends. PATTON, Georgia Edna Rose, age 75, of the Alto community, passed away Thursday, July 13, 2006 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Mrs. Patton worked for the Franklin County Board of Education for more than 30 years having started her career as a cook at the Alto School. At her retirement in 1988, she was serving as the Food Service Superintendent. A lifelong member of the Alto United Methodist Church, Mrs. Patton will be remembered as a very caring and devoted mother who loved her family with a passion. She was preceded in death by her husband, James David Patton in 2002 and a daughter, Donna Kaye Patton Hill in 1983. Mrs. Patton is survived by her daughters, Shelia Miller of Alto, Marla Stills (Michael Hill) of Winchester, Vickie (Chuck) May of Winchester and Connie White of Estill Springs; a son Larry David (Lisa) Patton of Alto; grandchildren, Angie Tawwater, Jackie D. Garrison, Marci May, Melinda Jones and grandsons, who will also be serving as pallbearers Clint Miller, Jody Miller, John Stills, Jamie Hill, Lyle Amacher, Wesley Amacher, Charlie Tawwater, Labron Jackson and Michael Jackson. BEARDEN, Etta Virginia Phelan, age 77 of Lebanon, formerly of Winchester, passed away Thursday, July 13, 2006 after a brief illness. Mrs. Bearden was a member of the Lebanon Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was active in the C.P. Women’s Ministry. She served in various roles at her church, from Sunday school teacher to working in the kitchen at Crystal Springs Church Camp. She and her husband were members of the Lebanon Senior Citizens and she was a member of the Oakland Homemakers Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Henry and Earnestine Swah Phelan and a brother, Walton Henry Phelan. Mrs. Bearden is survived by her husband of 57 years, Frank Martin Bearden; sons, Kenneth Martin (Nancy) Bearden of Knoxville and Thomas Lloyd (Becky) Bearden of Hendersonville; two grandchildren, Thomas Patrick Bearden and Amanda Nicole (Matt) Wynne; and one great-granddaughter, Taylor June Wirtz. PAYNE, William H. Tucker, age 73 of Chattanooga died Saturday, July 15, 2006 at a local hospital. He was born in Sherwood and worked with Steward Inc. for more than 50 years. He was a native of Sherwood and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Payne was a member and inactive deacon of the Riverside Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Payne, wife, Alice Ruth Payne, son, Ronald William Payne and a grandson, Scott Payne. He is survived by his mother, Lucy Payne; two sons, William "Tim" (Jennifer) Payne and Gary (Debbie) Payne; a daughter, Pamela (Curtis) Buckels; three sisters, Barbara Brocksmith, Jean Guess and Sharon Wood; five brothers, Paul, Raymond, Clayton, Jesse and James Payne; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. WEBB, Ellen Farnum, age 91 of Sewanee died at her residence on Thursday, July 13, 2006. She was born in St. Paul, MN to the late Rev. and Mrs. A.W. Farnum, former rector of St. Mary’s church, Asheville, N.C. She grew up in North Carolina. Mrs. Webb was a 1936 cum laude graduate of Duke University where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Mu sorority. After graduation she worked in the credit department of Macy’s in New York. In 1942, she married the late John M. Webb, Ph.D., former Dean of Men and Dean of the College at the University of the South. They moved to Sewanee in 1946 to stay "a couple of years," but never left. Mrs. Webb was active in the Sewanee Women’s Club and was a former president, and was a member of the St. Augustine’s Altar Guild and the Fortnightly Club. She was the business manager for The Sewanee Review for many years. She also co-founded, with Phoebe Bates, the Sewanee Siren (the predecessor of the Messenger). Her husband and an infant son, Albert, preceded her in death. Survivors include her son Shipp H. Webb of Sewanee; daughter-in-law Judith; nephew Peter Farnum of Puyallup, WA; two nieces, Abigail McGuire of Pittsburg and Cornelia Farnum of Ithaca, N.Y.; and a step-granddaughter, Mira Gerard of Johnson City. Services will be conducted Saturday, July 22, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Otey Memorial Parish Church in Sewanee with the Rev. Francis Walter and Rev. Tom Macfie officiating.
