Helen Allen, 66, Greeneville.
Services for Helen Ferril Allen, 66, Greeneville, who passed away Friday (Nov. 28, 2003) will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Fall Branch Chapel of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes with the Rev. Harvey Harmon and E.B. Moore officiating.

Music will be by Jimmy Conkin.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Fall Branch Chapel.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Oak Glen Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jason Steadman, Dewayne Owens, Mike Brandon, Albert Keys, Jim Collier and Matthew Hite.

Honorary pallbearers will be all members of the 1957 Class of Fall Branch High School, Dr. Tom Thomas, Dr. Cheryl Stanski, Dr. Robert Diez D'Aux, Patricia Gibson NP and Janice Jones LPN of Life Care.

Homer Allen, 83, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Homer Allen, 83, passed away Saturday (Nov. 29, 2003) at the Holston Valley Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Homer was born Sept. 13, 1920 in Oakfield, Tenn. and was the son of the late Blackmon and Alice (Duffy) Allen. Homer was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher. He was a volunteer for Habitat and Sheperd Center.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army, a member of the American Legion and VFW.

He was the owner and operator of Homers' Hair Designs since 1963.

Homer was preceded in death by his sisters, Blanche, Izora, Ora, Opal Mae; his brothers, Willie and Otha.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Maurine Parrish Allen of Kingsport; his daughter, Tina Spencer of Kingsport; his son, Devon (Dot) Allen of Benton Harbor, Mich.; three grandchildren, Kelli (Andy) Spencer Heyman, Christen (Al) Kably and Alicia Allen; three great-grandchildren, Eli Heyman, Tali Heyman and Audrey Kably; his sister-in-law, Lorine (Ray) Foutch of Las Vegas; a very close nephew, Bill (Betty) Osborne of Memphis; and several other nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the St. Matthew United Methodist Church.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today at the church following visitation.

Family and friends will meet for a graveside service at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the East Lawn Memorial Park, where military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 3/265.

The family request those desiring may make contributions to the St. Matthew United Methodist Church, 2505 Nathan St., Kingsport, Tenn. or to the Alzheimer Association, NE Tennessee Chapter, 207 North Boone St., Suite 1500, Johnson City, Tenn. 37604.

Adolph Anderson, Bluff City.
BLUFF CITY - Adolph (Andy) J. Anderson, 71, died Sunday (Nov. 30, 2003) at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Mr. Anderson was a native of Wisconsin, a former resident of Greenville and had lived in Bluff City for the past several years.

He was a son of the late Adolph and Minnie Anderson and was also preceded in death by his wife, Jane Gray Anderson three brothers and one sister.

Mr. Anderson was retired from the Army Corp of Engineers.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and president of Tennessee Federation of Chapters of N.A.R.F.E.

Mr. Anderson is survived by two sons, David Anderson, Clinton, Miss., and Thomas Anderson, Bluff City; one daughter, Debra Howard, Burleson, Texas; one brother, Myron Anderson, Wisconsin; one sister, Evelyn Martinson, Wisconsin; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Nova Barkley, 90, Hilton Head Island, S.C.
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S. C. - Nova Orlena Haws Barkley passed into eternal life on Saturday (Nov. 29, 2003). She was 90.

She was born Dec. 28, 1912, near Maryville, Tenn., and was the daughter of the late James Roy and Florence Belle Cox Haws.

In 1934, she married Benjamin Orville Barkley, Jr. of Jonesborough, Tenn., and spent most of her married life in Kingsport. After Benjamin's death in 1951, Nova completed her bachelor's degree at East Tennessee State University and taught for many years in Sullivan County schools.

After her retirement in 1976, she lived in Gatlinburg, Cookeville, and Johnson City before moving to Hilton Head Island, S.C. in 2002.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Wally Smith, of Hilton Head; granddaughters, Heather Smith Jones of Lawrence, Kans., Erika Lynn Smith of Hilton Head Island, Betty Merhoff Barre of Kingston, Tenn.; and grandsons, Benjamin Christian Merhoff of Alpharetta, Ga., and Michael James Merhoff of Vinton, Va.; great-grandsons, Christian Barkley Barre and Matthew Cameron Merhoff. She also leaves two nieces, Janice Haws Howard and Jane Hughes Sudderth; and two nephews, Darrell W. Haws, Jr. and Roy Bradley Haws.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Carole Ann Barkley Merhoff; her sister, Roxie Haws Hughes; and her brother, Darrell Wilson Haws.

The family will receive friends at Woodall-Anderson Funeral Home in Johnson City on Tuesday evening, Dec. 2 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 7:30 p.m.

A committal service will be at the Maple Lawn cemetery in Jonesborough for family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to either the building fund of First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 5922, Hilton Head Island, S.C. 29928 or the building fund of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 565 E. Tenth St., Cookeville, Tenn. 68501.

William D. Barry, 55, Kingsport.

Graveside services for William (Bill) David Barry, 55, of Kingsport, was born on February 19, 1948 and went to rest in the arms of Jesus on November 30, 2003, will be conducted at 10 a.m. today at Tri-Cities Memory Gardens in Blountville.

Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Bartley, 78, Coeburn, Va.
COEBURN, Va. - Mary Charlotte Culbertson Bartley, 78, died Sunday (Nov. 30, 2003) at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Va.

Mrs. Bartley was a former employee of Kilgore Grocery.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Emmitt and Hattie Osborne Willis; first husband, Kermit Culbertson Sr.; and a sister, Lucille Strong.

Surviving are her husband, Roy K. Bartley; daughter, Gwinda Reid, Big Stone Gap, Va.; son, Evangelist Bud Culbertson, Mount Carmel; grandson, Kenny Culbertson, Rogersville; granddaughter, Allyson Burden, Tulsa, Okla.; great-grandchildren, Miriam and Lydia Culbertson; brothers, Tommy Willis, Westerville, Ohio and Charles E. Willis Jr., Mineota, Tx.; sisters, Carolyn Sutton, Whitsett, N.C., and Janice Padgett, Duncanville, Tx.

Calling hours are after 6 p.m. today at Estes Funeral Home, Coeburn, Va.

Services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Alvin Meade officiating.

Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Laurel Grove cemetery in Norton, Va.

Tillie Benton, 91, Kingsport
KINGSPORT - Tillie Katherine Benton, 91, went to be with the Lord Monday (Dec. 1, 2003) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was born in Mansfield, Ohio and was a resident of Wexford House. Mrs. Benton was a homemaker and loved to quilt and do crafts.

Mrs. Benton was a member of the First Church of God in Mansfield, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Simon and Katherine Beer; one son, Ronald V. Hamlin; one sister, Anna Hergatt; three brothers, Jake, Albert and Russell Beer; and one granddaughter, Crystal Lynn Benton.

Surviving are her husband, Willie Benton, Kingsport; children, Janice Blackford, Mansfield, Ohio, Roger Dale Benton, Blountville, Colleen Grim, Gate City, Va., Delialah Dishner, Bristol, Tenn., Willie Benton Jr., Bristol, Tenn., and Virginia Johnson, Arin, Tenn.; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Esther Gray, Shelby, Ohio.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va. Calling hours will also be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at Wappner Funeral Directors, Mansfield, Ohio.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Wappner Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Larry Collins officiating.

Graveside services will be immediately following the funeral service in Mansfield Memorial Park, Mansfield, Ohio.

Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert E. Brown, 79, Kingsport.

Masonic services for Robert E. (Bob) Brown, 79, Kingsport, who passed away Sunday morning (Nov. 30, 2003) will be conducted by Kingsport Lodge #688 F.&A.M. at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, downtown Kingsport, followed by funeral services with Pastor J.W. Depew officiating.

Music will be provided by Pastor J.W. Depew.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Military graveside rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday by V.F.W. Post #3382 at East Lawn Memorial Park.

Willard Brown, 70, Knoxville.
KNOXVILLE - Willard E. Brown, age 70, of South Knoxville, was born April 8, 1933 and died Saturday, November 29, 2003.

He was a member of Sevier Heights Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Frank Brown and mother Grace Brown of Kingsport, Tenn.

He was raised in Kingsport, and served in the U.S. Air Force in the 809th, Air Police Unit at McDill Air Force Base, Tampa, Florida, as a sergeant.

He graduated from East Tennessee State with a B.S. in Education and a Masters Degree from the University of Tennessee. He worked in the Knoxville City School System as a teacher and coach at South High School from 1956-74, serving as head football coach from 1966-73.

In 1974, he became assistant principal at Gresham Jr. High School. In 1976, he became principal of Rule High School from where he retired in 1983. In 1979, he was recognized as Vocational Principal of the year. His 1969 South High football team was the first team to qualify under the newly established TSSAA playoff system.

In 1980, he was awarded a Danforth Foundation Principal's Fellowship for Urban Administrators. In 1982-83, Rule High School was selected by the Ford Foundation as one of the top 12 inner-city high schools in the United States. In 1983, he was awarded the Mayor's Merit Award by the city of Knoxville.

He is survived by wife of 50 years, Joyce Underwood Brown of Knoxville; sons, Tom and wife Janet Brown of Knoxville, Rob and wife Cheryl Brown of Chattanooga, and daughter, Diana Kerr of Dallas, Ga.; grandchildren, Matthew Brown, Katie Brown, Lee Brown, Rocky Kerr and Matt Anderson; sister, Wilma and husband Darrell Bryan of Mobile, Ala., and brother-in-law Al and wife Linda Underwood of Knoxville; nephews, Michael Bryan of Mobile, Ala., Tony Bryan of Cincinnati, Ohio; nieces, Beth and husband Mike King of Johnson City, Tenn., Amy and husband Mike Fine of Hilton Head, S.C.; and several great-nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Berry Chapel, Chapman Hwy., Knoxville.

Services will be 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Tim Miller, the Rev. David Harkins and Bill Young officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be David Sexton, Albert Ogle, Richard Scruggs, Robert Neff, Dickie McCoy, Leslie Wilson, Bob Polston, Ron Hickey.

Bill Chandler Sr., 85, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - James William (Bill) Chandler, Sr., 85, passed away Sunday (Nov. 30, 2003) at Wexford House.

Mr. Chandler was a native of West Virginia, but had resided in Bristol, Tenn. for several years and had lived in Gate City, Va. for the past 16 years.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was retired from Ball Brothers Furniture Company.

Mr. Chandler was a member of the Gate City United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Madge Branson Chandler; parents, Ernest Methew and Gladys Martin Chandler; and sister, Vivian Stanton.

Survivors include his wife, Annis Daugherty Chandler, of the home; daughter, Janice Murphy and husband Jim, Bartow, Fla.; son, Jim Chandler Jr., and wife Becki, Bristol, Va.; stepdaughter, Cathy Turner and husband Dewane, Gate City, Va.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Teague, Jacksonville, Fla.

Services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Colonial Funeral Home Chapel, Weber City, Va. with Pastor Dale Wyrick officiating.

Music will be provided by Gate City United Methodist Church Choir and Carolyn McPherson.

Calling hours will follow the funeral and anytime at the residence of Cathy Turner.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Glenwood Cemetery, Bristol, Tenn. The family will meet at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Daugherty and grandchildren: Jamie Murphy, Jeff Murphy, Matt Chandler, Chris Phipps, David Baker, Leigh Beth Phipps, and Rachel Baker.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Perry, Bill H. Dougherty, Harry Penley, Byrd Quillen, and Jim Daugherty.

Bernice Clayton, 81, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Bernice Lillian Clayton, 81, passed away on Sunday (Nov. 30, 2003) at Indian Path Hospital.

Mrs. Clayton was born in Rock Island, Ill., previously resided in Savannah, Ga. and Chicago, Ill. She was a member of St. Dominics Catholic Church.

Her parents, Valere and Aurelie Callewaert; her husband, Vance O. Clayton; stepmother, Ruth McCormick Callewaert preceded her in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Diane L. Clayton and husband Edwin J. Dobbs of Kingsport; two sons, Michael V. Clayton, Kingsport and Gary V. Clayton and wife Sandra K., Abingdon, Va.; three grandchildren, Michael, Chad and Schuyler Clayton; two stepgrandchildren, Ashley and David Dobbs; beloved cousins, Andy Vandekerchove, Norma Zelnio, Agnes Molinelli and Orville Ellis; beloved special friend, Beverly Zuhlke; sister-in-law, Edith Xenophon; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Oak Hill Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Judes Children Hospital, 332 N. Lauderdale, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.
