Tom Hodge, 74, Johnson City.
JOHNSON CITY - Tom Hodge, 74, of 1705 Sunnyview Circle, Johnson City, died Saturday (March 27, 2004) in Bristol.
Born Oct. 17, 1929, he was a son of the late Ernest Thomas and Maxine Moore Hodge. Mr. Hodge was a native of Johnson City and a former resident of Mountain City before returning to Johnson City in 1942.
Tom was an employee of the Johnson City Press for 52 years, the last 27 as the editorial director. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee with a B.A. degree in journalism.
Mr. Hodge began his long career with the Johnson City Press in 1948 at age 18, part time as a sports writer. He became a full-time news reporter for the paper in 1952, following his graduation from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he received a bachelor's degree in journalism and was editor of the Orange and White in 1951.
He later served as telegraph editor for the paper and, in 1965, was promoted to executive editor. He was named editorial director in 1977. His only absence from the paper was two years of military service during the Korean War, during which he served with the Army Counterintelligence Corps.
Widely known and respected as a journalist, Mr. Hodge was perhaps best known for his columns, "A Look Around" and "Here and There, " in which he entertained and enlightened the paper's readers for nearly 50 years. His daily dispatches alternately touched on little known or forgotten bits of local history and lore, seasonal updates on the progress of the mountain flora, tips to interesting rotations in the night sky, chronicles of his travels with his family and his many trips to New York and Europe with his wife, Ann, and her Ann Hodge Dancers, his often riotous appearances in the annual community productions, and off-the-wall news items "from all over, " each delivered with a serving of his own brand of understated humor.
As a political reporter, Mr. Hodge covered the Tennessee Legislature from 1955-63. He was an associate professor in the department of journalism at East Tennessee State University from 1968-86 and was a member of the Tennessee Press Association board of directors from 1969-71.
His long tenure as a community servant included his current service on the directory boards of the Johnson City United Way, Salvation Army, Appalachian Fair and Mountain States Health Alliance. He had served as United Way treasurer since 1998, chairman of the MSHA board from 1994-2000, and as chairman of the health alliance's Washington County Community Board since 2000.
He was a native of Johnson City and moved to Mountain City at an early age. He returned to Johnson City in 1942 and was a graduate of Science Hill High School. He attended East Tennessee State University for two years before transferring to UT.
