Roy Edward Shuler, 86, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Roy Edward Shuler, 86, went peacefully to be with his Lord Thursday (March 25, 2004), his loving wife and family by his side at the Holston Valley Medical Center.

Roy was born in Lee County, Va., Sept. 2, 1917 and was the son of Hugh and Emily (Yeary) Shuler. Roy was a kind, sincere and devoted man whose smiling face brought joy to those he touched.

Roy was a member of the Colonial Heights Baptist Church.

He was a retired production manager of Pet Dairy in Big Stone Gap, Va. He was a member of the Kazim Shrine Temple #7246 of Big Stone Gap, AF&AM Grand Lodge of Virginia, Big Stone Gap Chapter #208 and Master Mason Big Stone Gap Lodge #208, Eastern Star Chapter #157 of Big Stone Gap, where he was a past patron and charter member of Liberty Chapter #198. He was also a charter member of the Big Stone Gap Fire Department.

Roy is survived by his wife of 63 years, Edith (Reasor) Shuler of the home; a daughter, Patricia Shuler Statzer of Cincinnati, Ohio; his son and daughter-in-law, Douglas Edward and Linda (Salley) Shuler of Kingsport; four grandchildren, Travis Shuler, Lori Shuler, Leah Kordenbrock and Rachel Klump; two great-grandchildren, Leslie Goodfriend and Max Kordenbrock; a brother and sisters-in-law, Don and Ann Shuler of Big Stone Gap, Va., and Virginia Shuler of Dryden, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the East Lawn Funeral Home and anytime at his residence.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Joshua M. Hunt officiating.

Family and friends will meet at the Holston View cemetery in Weber City, Va., for a Masonic graveside service at 11 a.m. Monday.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family requests those desiring may make memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 3952, Kingsport, Tenn. 37664.

East Lawn Funeral Home is serving the Shuler family.

James Tippett, 75, Kernersville, N.C.
KERNERSVILLE, N.C. - Mr. James Campbell Tippett, 75, formerly of Naples, Fla., entered into rest Saturday (March 27, 2004) at Forsyth Medical Center.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Gate City Funeral Home, Inc.

George M. Walker, 60, Fall Branch.
FALL BRANCH - George M. Walker, 60, 17185 Kingsport Highway, Fall Branch, died on Thursday (March 25, 2004) at his home.

He was born on July 4, 1943 in Greene County, and excelled in football at Greeneville High School, where he graduated in 1961. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve and retired from Eastman Chemical Company in 1997 after over 31 years of service.

Mr. Walker was a born-again Christian, and of the Baptist faith. He was an active, vigorous man, an avid gardener, football enthusiast, and devoted entirely to his God, family, and friends.

Preceding him in death were his beloved wife of 39 years, Anne Hensley Walker in 2001; and his father, Ragan Walker in 1967.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Walker, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael Todd and Martha Whitener Walker, Harrisonburg, Va.; three stepsons, Todd Duncan and wife, Kim, Fall Branch, Tim Duncan, Fall Branch, and Josh Hood, Murfreesboro; two grandsons, William Jackson Whitener Walker and George Reid Walker, Harrisonburg, Va.; four step-grandchildren, Jacob Smith, Fall Branch, Amanda and Colby, Surgoinsville, and Courtney Duncan, Fall Branch; his mother, Mrs. Alta Walker, Greeneville; two brothers and a sister-in-law, John R. and Shirley Walker and Dan D. Walker; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Zan Walker, Nellie Ann and Willard Blevins, all of Greeneville; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Fall Branch Chapel of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes.

Services will follow at 8 p.m. today in the Fall Branch Chapel with Rev. Victor Wallace officiating.

A private graveside service will be conducted on Monday at East Lawn Memorial Park.

Memorials may be given to the church or charity of one's choice.

Margaret Ater, Church Hill.
CHURCH HILL - Margaret Ater, formerly of Monmouth, Ill., passed on to her heavenly home early Friday afternoon (March 26, 2004) at Church Hill Rehab Center in Church Hill.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Monmouth until moving to Church Hill in 1998, where she joined her family at the First Baptist Church of Church Hill.

She enjoyed serving as a clerk at Bowman Collwell Department Store for many years. She not only enjoyed her many friends she made there, but also found it a joy to serve her family and friends in her home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Ater; son, Robert Ater; daughter, Donna Ater Allaman; brother and sister-in-law, Irvin and Jenny Rohr; sisters, Doris Johnson, Fran Russell, all of Monmouth.

Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Glenn Leinbach of Church Hill, Pat and Mike Davis of Greenville, S.C.; one sister, Kay Fillman of Monmouth, Ill.; 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home of Church Hill. Friends of the family may call anytime at the home of her granddaughter, Sheryl Johnson, 550 E. Morgan St., Church Hill.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Gary Gerhardt officiating.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Monmouth, Ill.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church building fund, P.O. Box 847, Church Hill, Tenn. 37642.

Lura Bishop, 83, Clinchport, Va.
CLINCHPORT, Va. - Services for Lura Katherine Bishop, 83, of Clinchport and formerly of Rogersville, who went to be with the Lord Wednesday morning (March 24, 2004) will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the Colboch-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Rogersville with the Rev. Joe Hill and the Rev. Denny Hass officiating.

Singers will be Denny Hass and the Kerns Sisters, Jerry Perry and Eddie McCollough.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Chimney Top Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Judy Ann Bowser, 59, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Judy Ann Bowser, 59, passed away Friday (March 26, 2004) after a lengthy illness.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Victoria Fain Brooks, 80, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Victoria Demetris Fain Brooks, 80, 3409 Stafford St., went to meet her Heavenly Father Thursday evening (March 25, 2004) at Holston Valley Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

She was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County being born and raised in Rogersville by the late Issac Neil Fain and Bessie McKinney Fain.

Mrs. Brooks was saved at the age of 26-years-old serving the Lord for 54 years. She was of the Holiness faith where she was a church mother at Powerful New Life COJIC.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her six brothers, Joe Neil, James Franklin, William Clinton, Leon Lewis, Robert Lewis and Charles Fain; six sisters, Mary Ella Gillenwater, Laura Hoskins, Lillie Fain, Inessa Hale, Henrietta Henry and Margaret Rogers.

Victoria Fain Brooks is survived by her loving husband of over 50 years, Freeman Mason Brooks; her son, Wayne Morris Fain; a daughter-in-law, Mary Fain, (both of Kingsport); four grandchildren, Octavia Williams, Jeffery Wayne Fain, Carla Annette Long and Christopher Fain; nine great-grandchildren; four nieces, Edith Lyons (Rogersville), Wanda Bazzell (Flint, Michigan), Sarah Ford (Kingsport) and Heather Hatterson (Morristown); along with a host of several more special nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home of Church Hill or friends may also call anytime at the residence, 3409 Stafford St., or the son's residence, Wayne, 1916 Greenway St., Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Elder Hugh Allen Hale and Elder Ronald Barfield officiating.

Music will be provided by the Powerful New Life COJIC Choir and Spencer Pearson.

Burial services will follow the funeral at Mitchell-Cress cemetery in Rogersville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Powerful New Life COJIC, 1300 Riverside Ave., Kingsport, Tenn. 37660.

Ruby J. Clifton, Knoxville.
KNOXVILLE - Ruby J. (Atkins) Clifton, passed away peacefully on Friday (March 26, 2004) at her home in Knoxville.

Arrangements will be announced in Sunday's paper by Oak Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery.

Marjorie E. Dean, 81, Yuma, Va.
YUMA, Va. - Marjorie Elizabeth Dean, 81, went to be with the Lord Friday morning (March 26, 2004) at Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was a charter member of Temple Baptist Church, Appalachia, Va., and attended Salley's Chapel Baptist Church in Weber City, Va.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Pat Cress and Minnie Potter Cress; and a baby sister.

Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Dale H. Dean of Yuma, Va.; two daughters, Elizabeth Fields and husband Paul of Yuma, Va., Jennifer Mullins and husband Gilmer of Gray; four grandchildren, Lisa Bevins and husband Kevin, Sam Fields, John Mullins and wife Marty, Rachel McCurry and husband Samuel; four great-grandchildren, Whitney Bevins, Shawn Fields, Matthew Mullins, Shane Mullins; two brothers, Arthur Cress and wife Jimmie of Kingsport, Bill Cress of Lawton, Okla.; three sisters, Betty Cousins and husband Skeetie of Loganville, Ga., Patsy Walker and husband Gar of Kansas City, Mo., Aileen Lowe of Elizabethton, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va. Family and friends may also call anytime at the home, Route 7, Box 721, Gate City.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Charles Boone officiating. Music will be provided by the Salley's Chapel Quartet.

Graveside services will be conducted at 12 noon Monday at Holston View cemetery with Pastor Charles Boone in charge of the service.

Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., is serving Mrs. Dean's family.

Florney M. Fields, 76, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - Mrs. Florney M. Fields, 76, entered into rest, Thursday (March 25, 2004) at her residence.

Mrs. Fields was born in Kentucky, daughter of the late Claude and Cynthia Potter Gibson, but lived most of her life in Scott County, Va.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, George Hopson; her second husband, Jack Fields; and her son, Freeman Harrington, Sr.

She is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Julie Hopson, Kentucky, Jimmy and Jane Hopson, North Carolina and James Hopson, Kentucky; daughter, Ruby Dutton, Maryland; three special grandchildren, Rosalee Harrington, Virginia, Jennifer Glover and husband, Aaron, Tennessee and Freeman Harrington, Jr. and wife, Kim, Virginia; special daughter-in-law, Shirley Harrington, Virginia; and many more precious grandchildren and family.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the Gate City Funeral Home.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Wrightly Salling officiating.

The Lee Smith Singers will provide the music.

Burial will follow the service at the Fields Family cemetery in the Midway Community of Scott County, Va.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

John A. Gilliam, 74, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - John A. Gilliam, 74, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday (March 25, 2004) at his residence after a lengthy illness with his loving family by his side.

Mr. Gilliam was born in Sullivan County, however, he spent 38 years in the Baltimore area where he retired from Bethlehem Steel. He returned to Kingsport in 1994.

John was an Army veteran and served during the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW Post #3382 and also a member of Higher Ground Baptist Church.

Mr. Gilliam was preceded in death by his mother, Mattie Gilliam; two sons, David Anthony and Timothy Mark Gilliam; and a sister, Mary Burke.

Surviving are his loving wife of 52 years, Ruth Shipley Gilliam; a daughter, Shelley Baker and husband John of Baltimore, Md.; a son, John Matthew Gilliam and his loving companion, Ashley Savage, both of Knoxville; a sister, Shirley Smith and husband Bill of Woodstock, Ga.; two brothers, Earl Gilliam and wife Elsie of Oliver Springs, Tenn., and Harold Gilliam and wife Louise of Church Hill; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Oak Hill Funeral Home.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Larry Anderson officiating.

Graveside services and interment will follow immediately on Sunday in the Oak Hill Memorial Park with military honors being performed by the VFW Post #3382.

Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Maryetta Hileman, 85, Harlan, Ky.
HARLAN, Ky. - Services for Mrs. Maryetta Greene Hileman, 85, formerly of Rogersville, who passed away Thursday (March 25, 2004), will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville, with the Rev. Otto Giles officiating.

Music will be provided by the Clinch River Quartet.

Visitation will be from 12 noon to 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in the Bassett and Mayes cemetery in Mooresburg, Tenn. with nephews serving as pallbearers.

Jerry Todd Koslow, 38, Blountville.
BLOUNTVILLE - Graveside services for Jerry Todd Koslow, 38, who departed this life on Thursday (March 25, 2004) will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Gunnings Cemetery. Family and friends are requested to meet at 10:50 a.m. Saturday at the cemetery for the graveside service.

Pallbearers will be Donald Wayne Pickle Jr., Donald W. Pickle III, Shane Daughtery, Terry Lynn Tabor, Mark Addleburg and Nat Tunnell.

Carter-Trent Funeral Home of downtown Kingsport is serving the Jerry Todd Koslow family.
