Monica Richardson, 47, Norton, Va.
NORTON, Va. - Monica Ann (Jones) Richardson, 47, died Wednesday (March 24, 2004) at her residence.

She was a lifelong resident of the Norton area. She was of the Baptist faith and a graduate of John I. Burton High School.

She was preceded in death by parents, Holly and Bertha Jones; and a sister, Sharon Jones Absher.

She is survived by daughter, Amber Richardson, Norton; grandson, Kaden Fisher, Norton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Judith and Phil Thompson, Patricia and Jesse Barnett, all of Coos Bay, Or., Reka Jones, of the home and Carl Absher of Norton; brothers and sister-in-law, Gary and Lisa Jones and Michael Jones, all of Norton; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home, Norton, Va.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ralph McFarland officiating.

Graveside committal services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Laurel Grove Cemetery.

Those wishing to go in procession may meet at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Gladys Dykes Scalf, 78, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Gladys Dykes Scalf, 78, went to be with the Lord Thursday (March 25, 2004) at Brookhaven Manor following a lengthy illness.

Born in Sullivan County where she was a lifelong resident, Mrs. Scalf retired from Eastman Kodak in 1972 after 26 years of service.

She was a member of Visions Freewill Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents, J.L. "Jimmy" and Carrie Dykes; husband, Claude Scalf; two sisters, Nellie Dykes and Artie Darnell; and brother, Rev. Fred Dykes.

Surviving are two sons, Dale "Bill" Scalf and wife, Geraldine, Fall Branch, Don Scalf and wife, Lynn, Palm Coast, Fla.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one uncle, Simon Forbes; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport and anytime at the home of a son at 110 Richards Lane, Fall Branch.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Orville Dolen and Rev. Roy Darnell officiating.

Burial will follow at Hilltop Mission Church Cemetery.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Kingsport Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 3952, Kingsport, Tenn. 37664.

Neal S. Shanks Jr., 88, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - Neal S. Shanks Jr., 88, died Thursday (March 25, 2004) at St. John's Health Care in Johnson City after an extended illness.

He was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County and was a retired farmer.

Mr. Shanks was a member of Hickory Cove Missionary Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Neal S. and Willie Alvis Shanks Sr.; sisters, Leona Hensley and Louise Shanks; and a brother, Clarence Shanks.

Surviving are one sister, Nettie L. Carpenter of Rogersville; two brothers, Willie Shanks and wife, Mable of Rogersville and H.C. Shanks and wife, Ruby of Oak Ridge; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville.

Bernice Templeton, 86, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Bernice Taylor Egan Templeton, 86, of the Wexford House in Kingsport, died on Saturday (March 20, 2004) after an extended period of declining health.

A native of Fort Blackmore, Va., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Taylor and Mandy Duncan Taylor.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husbands, Fred W. Egan and Floyd Templeton; four brothers, Echol Taylor, Glen Taylor, Fred E. Taylor and Claude Taylor; and one sister, Mrs. Howard (Myrtle Gene) Carter.

She was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church. Prior to entering the health care facility; most of her life was spent as a homemaker and caretaker for her family.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

Surviving are one daughter, Beverly Foster, Atlanta, Ga.; two grandchildren, Susan Wright, Atlanta, Ga., and Carter Foster, Los Angeles, Ca.; one great-granddaughter, Ashley Wright, Atlanta, Ga.; four sisters-in-law, Mrs. James (Ina) Parr, Asheville, N.C., Mrs. Fred (Tennie) Taylor, Mrs. Kyle (Pearl) Pressley, and Mrs. Melvin (Joe) Egan, all of Kingsport; six nephews, Philip Taylor, Hal Taylor, Brian Egan, Duane Egan, Jerry Egan, and Berkley Underwood; and one niece, Mrs. Oscar (Carolyn) Lindsey.

Family members will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Charles Roberts officiating. Following the funeral service, the body will be laid to rest in the Taylor cemetery at Fort Blackmore, Va. on a hill above her family home.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA Center of Excellence at Emory University School of Medicine, 1841 Clifton Road, Atlanta, Ga. 30329.

Mrs. Margaret Terry, 96, Big Stone Gap, Va.
BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Mrs. Margaret Terry, 96, died Wednesday (March 24, 2004) at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap.

Born April 14, 1907, she was a lifelong resident of Big Stone Gap. She was the Baptist faith and was a member of First Baptist Church in Big Stone Gap.

She was the daughter of the late John Henry and Margaret Cosby Catron.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Emerson Salyer; her second husband, Benjamin Terry; a son, Air Force Master Sergeant Edwin R. Salyer; and four sisters.

She is survived by one granddaughter, Beverly Carr, of Rancho Murieta, Ca.; two grandsons, Edwin R. Salyer, Jr. and David Salyer; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Glencoe cemetery in Big Stone Gap with the Rev. Robert W. Cornwell officiating.

Those wishing to go in procession may meet at the funeral home at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Holding Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

George Walker, 60, Fall Branch.
FALL BRANCH - George Walker, 60, 17185 Kingsport Hwy., Fall Branch, died Thursday (March 25, 2004) in the emergency room at Holston Valley Medical Center of an apparent heart attack.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Fall Branch Chapel of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes.

Cloice Zell King Webb, 91, Calico, Rock, Ark.
CALICO ROCK, Ark. - Cloice Zell King Webb, daughter of the late Charlie Price King and Ethel Townsend King, was born on Sept. 4, 1912 in Zion, Ark. She departed this life on March 24, 2004 in Calico Rock, Ark. at the age of 91 years, six months and 21 days.

Cloice was united in marriage to Gorden Webb on Oct. 11, 1931 in Calico Rock, Ark. and to this union two children were born. During her working years, Cloice worked as a seamstress. Cloice was also a homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother.

She attended the Calico Rock Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Cloices leaves to mourn her passing: two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Betty Webb of Batesville, Ark., and Randy and Nicky Webb of Calico Rock, Ark.; one sister, Jeanette Hooper of Moses Lake, Wash.; four grandchildren, Tony Webb, Batesville, Ark., Tracy Webb Rice and her husband Paul, Hot Springs, Ark., Tiffany Webb, Atlanta, Ga., and Tobias Webb of Calico Rock, Ark.; three great-grandchildren, Tanner Rice, Tatum Rice and Thea Rice, all of Hot Springs, Ark.; and a host of relatives and many good friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; five brothers, Earl, Shelby, Roland, O.D., and George King; and two sisters, Bernice Garner and Hazel McVey.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. today at Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Calico Rock, Ark. with Wayne Wood and Carl Cook officiating.

Burial will be at Roselawn cemetery in Calico Rock.

Eddie's Family Funeral Home, Calico Rock, Ark., is in charge of the arrangements.

Christopher Whitley, Charlotte, N.C.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Christopher Kevin Whitley, 38, passed away unexpectedly at his residence Tuesday (March 23, 2004).

Born May 18, 1965 in Kingsport, he was the son of Barbara C. Whitley of Pineville and the late Marvin R. Whitley.

Chris was a chef for 15 years and recently was the office manager for Carey Limousine Company.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his brothers, Mark Whitley, Matthews, Andy Whitley, Conyers, Ga., and David Whitley, Washington, D.C.; nephews, Andrew Whitley, Carlisle Whitley and Walker Whitley, all of Conyers, Ga.; and a niece, Rachel Whitley, Matthews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Carolina Funeral and Cremation Center, 5505 Monroe Road, Charlotte, N.C., with the Rev. Peggy Bridgers officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service.

Howard "Keener" Austin, Puyallup, Wash.
PUYALLUP, Wash. - Howard "Keener" Austin passed away at his home on Tuesday (Nov. 30, 2004) at 9:10 p.m. He had battled cancer for the past year.

Born in Scott County, Va., he had been a resident of Washington for most of his life since 1959.

Keener was preceded in death by his father, Walter Benton Austin; his sister, Kathleen Austin; and his son, Joseph Glenn Austin.

Surviving are his mother, Lelyia Gilreath Austin, Gate City, Va.; two daughters and their families in Washington, Erica Sweet and husband Dennis, Karen Rowland and husband Tom; five grandchildren, Caleb Bartro, Julia and Joseph Sewell, and Allison and Jenna Sweet; four sisters, Ruby Hayes, Church Hill, Barbara Anderson and husband C.H., North Carolina, Elaine Lyall and husband Larry, Church Hill, and Kathy Brooks and husband Bobby, Kingsport; three brothers, Bruce and wife Peggy, Kingsport, James Michael, Jonesborough, and Gene and wife Elizabeth, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Maynard and Joyce Ketron, Kingsport.

Friends may call or visit at any time at his mother's home, 549 Anderson Cr., Gate City, Va.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at Puyallup Nazarene Church, 1026 7th Ave. SW, Puyallup, Wash. 98371.

Flowers may be sent to the church for the memorial service or to his home at 12919 Woodland Ave. E, Puyallup, Wash. 98373.

Dana C. Baird, Sr., 77, Piney Flats
PINEY FLATS - Dana C. Baird, Sr., 77, went to be with the Lord on Thursday (Dec. 2, 2004) at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Watauga County, N.C. and was the son of the late Carl and Laura McGuire Baird. Mr. Baird retired from Flavorich Dairy after 40 years of service and was a U.S. Navy veteran.

He was a member of Piney Flats Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Louise Russell Baird; sons, Dana Carl "Danny" Baird and wife Teresa of Piney Flats and Clifton Dwayne Baird and wife Sharon of Montgomery, Tex.; brothers, Joseph Dwight Baird and wife Beulah of Gray and William "Bill" Baird and wife Yvonne of Bluff City, Lawrence Baird and wife Aurelia of Kingsport; sisters, Ruby Russell of Bristol, Va., IvaDine McMaster and husband Andrew of Kingsport, Shirley Thomas and husband Robert of Bluff City, Margie "Hobby" Louitte of Port Orange, Fla., Faye Williams and husband Gene of Piney Flats, Kay Warren and husband Samuel of Piney Flats and Sharon Blevins and husband Luther of Piney Flats; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by a daughter Phyllis Holtz; and two brothers, Dallas Baird and Dick Baird.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at the Piney Flats Baptist Church with Dr. Allen Davis officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:45 p.m. today at Weaver Funeral Home, Bristol, Tenn.

The committal service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday in the Glenwood Cemetery.

Nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Piney Flats Baptist Church, 100 Cherry St., Piney Flats, Tenn.

William S. Canter, 80, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - William Sager Canter, 80, died Friday morning (Dec. 3, 2004) at Wellmont Hospice House.

Born in Schoolfield, Va., he had resided in Kingsport since 1965.

Mr. Canter served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from Daniels Construction Company in 1990 where he worked as a welder.

His brother, Calvin Canter, and parents, Walter and Lava-Lette Canter preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife, Nella Canter, of the home; sons, Bill Canter and wife Patty, Bristol, Va., and Butch Canter and wife Vickie, Ashburn, Va.; stepsons, Robert Conley and wife Betty, Kingsport, and Wayne Conley, Kingsport; grandchildren, Adam Canter and Butchie Canter; step-grandchildren, Tanya Hart and April Conley; step great-grandchildren, Zoe and Tanner Hart; two brothers, Charles L. Canter, Bristol, Va.; and Leroy Canter, Mobile, Ala.; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are 4 to 6 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel.

Burial will follow in Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 3/265.

Pallbearers will be Bill Bowman, Joey Watson, J.D. Gass, Mike Canter, David Canter and Steve Canter.
