Fred Morris, 85, Kingsport.
Graveside services and burial for Fred Morris, 85, of Kingsport, who passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at 11 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 27, 2004), will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in East Lawn Memorial Park Garden of Love.

Pallbearers will be Mark Cole, Michael Cole, Matthew Cole, David Cole, Henry Prater and Matthew Price.

Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Campbell, Wayne Klepper, Clint Carroll and Bucky Cox.

Bertha Swafford, 92, Kingsport.
Services for Mrs. Bertha Mae Swafford, 92, 134 East Wanola Ave., Kingsport, who departed this life Thursday morning (Nov. 25, 2004), will be conducted at 1 p.m. today from Central Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Anthony Daniels officiating.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 1 p.m. today at the church.

Interment will follow at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va.

Mrs. Bertha Mae Swafford and family are in the care of Robinson Funeral Services, Kingsport.

Frank E. Waldo Sr., 85, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Frank Ernest Waldo Sr., 85, of Kingsport, passed away Monday (Nov. 29, 2004) in the Holston Valley Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Frank was born Feb. 13, 1919 in Huntington, Ore., and was a son of the late William Bion and Mamie Annabell (Williams) Waldo. Frank was a retired military officer, serving 32 years with the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the Cedar View Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder.

Surviving are his wife, Clara Elizabeth (Grills) Waldo of the home; his children, Frank Ernest Waldo and wife Rebecca, Daniel Bion Waldo and wife Sharon, and David William Waldo and wife Kent; his grandchildren, Brian Douglas Waldo and wife Tina, Jeremiah David Waldo, Kelley Germaine, Kristin Danielle Marshall and husband Kevin, Caralee Dawn Waldo; his great-grandchildren, Sydney Allyson Waldo and Hayden Matthew Marshall; and a very special nephew who was more of a son, Wallace Grills. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the East Lawn Funeral Home.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel.

Graveside service with full military honors will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the East Lawn Memorial Park, conducted by the Honor Guard of Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.

Honorary pallbearers will be Brian Waldo, Coy Klepper, Kevin Marshall, Jeremiah Waldo and Ernie Waldo.

Virginia H. Whetsel, 80, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Virginia H. Whetsel, 80, Kingsport, died Saturday night (Nov. 27, 2004) at Preston Place Suites after an extended illness.

Born in Knoxville, she resided in Kingsport since 1950. She graduated from Knoxville High School, attended UT – Knoxville, and graduated from St. Mary's School of Nursing in Knoxville. Mrs. Whetsel was a registered nurse, educator, and homemaker.

She was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church and active in volunteer work.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit B. Whetsel; parents, Shields and Ruth Hodges; and one brother, James Shields Hodges Jr.

Surviving are four sons and daughters-in-law, Mac and Cindy Whetsel of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Bob and Melynda Whetsel of Knoxville, Andy and Karen Whetsel of Kingsport, and Doug and Patty Whetsel of West Covina, Calif.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, William H. Hodges Sr. of Johnson City; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Broad Street United Methodist Church.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Jack Edwards officiating.

Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Park.

Sons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Mabel D. Carson, 91, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - Graveside service for Mabel D. Carson, 91, of 2243 E. Main Street, Rogersville, who passed away Saturday (Nov. 27, 2004), will be held at 10 a.m. today at Highland cemetery with the Rev. John North officiating.

Christian-Sells Funeral Home in Rogersville is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. James "Teb" Carter, 80, Ft. Blackmore, Va.
FT. BLACKMORE, Va. - Rev. James "Teb" Carter, 80, passed away Saturday (Nov. 27, 2004) at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn.

He was born in Slant, Va., and was retired from J.P. Stevens. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served aboard the USS Highlands.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Ernest and Stella Hill Carter; brother, Kyle Carter; and sister, Ruby Brickey.

Surviving are his wife, Dora Kern Carter of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Jackie Edwards, Ft. Blackmore; son and daughter-in-law, David and Jean Carter, Ft. Blackmore; grandson and wife, Michael and Kacy Edwards, Ft. Blackmore; sisters, Mima Starnes and Jean Dean, both of Ft. Blackmore; brothers and sisters-in-law, Roy and Faye Carter, Asheville, N.C., Eckle and Olene Carter, Ft. Blackmore; brother-in-law, who lived with the family several years, Clyde Kern; several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., and anytime at the residence.

Services will be conducted at Fellowship Chapel Church, State Route 65, Ft. Blackmore, at 12 noon on Tuesday with Bro. Mack Sanders and Elder Jimmy Combs officiating.

Music will be provided by Upward Way Quartet.

Rev. Carter will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Burial will follow at Holston View cemetery with military honors conducted by American Legion Hammond Post No. 3 and Gate City Post No. 265.

Pallbearers will be James Perry, Henry Kern, Clyde Kern, Jack Taylor, Cecil Kern, Jim Starnes, Sam Brickey and Sonny Starnes.

Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Fellowship Chapel Church.

Mattie Catherine Cook, Bristol, Tenn.
BRISTOL, Tenn. - Our loving Momma, Mattie Catherine Cook, went home to be with her Lord at 6 o'clock Sunday morning (Nov. 28, 2004) at her Bristol, Tenn., home.

She was born in St. Joseph, Mo., on Sept. 17, 1917, to the late Joe and Rosie Little Fauver. Her family came to Tennessee when she was two years old in a covered wagon with a herd of turkey.

She was the widow of John H. Cook Sr., and the mother of 16 children, 50 grandchildren, 101 great-grandchildren, 20+ great- great-grandchildren and 28 step- grandchildren, to whom her heart and home were always open.

She was a charter member of Liberty Baptist Church in Bristol, where she attended faithfully as long as she was able.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Cook Sr.; one son, Kermit Cook; several grandchildren; three brothers, Andrew Fauver, John W. Fauver and Charlie Fauver; and two sisters, Dora Harr and Susie Hatcher.

Survivors include nine sons and six daughters, Lester Cook and Paula of Kingsport, Christine Lory and Chuck of McEwen, Tenn., John H. Cook Jr. and Shirley of Blountville, Dorcus Rosenbaum and Stanley of Blountville, Clara Craig and Joe of Bristol, Tenn., Douglas M. Cook and Jessie of Oak Ridge, Roy Cook and Bobbie of Sparta, Tenn., Deborah Cornett and Jessee of Cunningham, Tenn., Dan Cook of Oak Ridge, Graham Cook and Mary of LaVergne, Tenn., David Cook and Charlotte of Blountville, Marie Morrell and Kevin of Bluff City, Tommy Cook and Connie of Bristol, Tenn., Calvin Cook and Donna of Bristol, Tenn., and Alice Hunsucker and David of Blountville; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, including Bill Harr of the home, Ester Day, and Pauletta Frye, a very special friend and caregiver who was sent from God and whom we all love and appreciate; one sister-in-law, Carrie Cook of Lenoir, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7:45 p.m. today at Celebration Church with the funeral service to follow at 8 p.m. Dr. Stan Anderson, Rev. Douglas M. Cook Jr., and Dr. Craig Fry will officiate.

The committal service and burial will be private.

Pallbearers will be Mrs. Cook's children.

Mrs. Cook and her family are in the care of Oakley-Cook Funeral Home, Bristol, Tenn.

Ralph L. Cutshall, 83, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - Ralph L. Cutshall, 83, went to be with the Lord late Saturday night (Nov. 27, 2004) at Rogersville Health Care and Rehabilitation Center after an extended illness.

Survivors and arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Carter-Trent Funeral Home of Church Hill.

James Kyle Dishner, 73, Bristol, Tenn.
BRISTOL, Tenn. - James Kyle "Jim" Dishner, 73, of Bristol, Tenn., passed away Sunday (Nov. 28, 2004) at his residence.

He was born in Duffield, Va., the son of the late Lee Dishner and Venus Clendenen. He had lived most of his life in Bristol and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a salesman for Sun Electric and the owner and operator of Jim and Paul's Auto Repair.

He was a member of Fellowship Chapel Church and an avid NASCAR fan, as well as a former late model sportsman owner.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Peggy Feathers Dishner; a daughter, Debra Adkins and her husband, Ronnie, of Charlotte, N.C.; a granddaughter/daughter, Wendi Stapleton; a granddaughter, Annah Courts; four sisters, Mae Rutter, Aline Finkle, Betty Mattson and Wanda Barker; four great-grandchildren, Caleb and Tyler Stapleton and Ashton and Brighton Courts; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home, Bristol, Tenn.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Paul Cook Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Lester MacKinnon and Rev. Scott Price officiating.

Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Paul Piercy, Bill Talley, Eddie Leslie, Sherman Utsman, Lester Dishner, Dwayne Cook and Gene Blackburn.

Nancy Hobbs Durham, 78, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Nancy Hobbs Durham, 78, Kingsport, went to be with her Master Sunday (Nov. 28, 2004) after a lengthy illness.

Born in Hiltons, Va., Mrs. Durham was an employee at Eastman and F.H. Woolworth and a homemaker for 49 years.

Nancy was an avid reader. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who truly enjoyed her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Wesley Hobbs and Hattie Lee Crumley; seven sisters, Fannie Hobbs McCrary, Monnie Hobbs Mullins, Elsie Hobbs Barry, Lacy Hobbs Beam, Lucille Hobbs Judd, Bernice Hobbs Sparks, and Edith Hobbs; and four brothers, Robert Lee Hobbs, William Hobbs, John W. Hobbs II, and Samuel W. Hobbs.

Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Denver D. Durham; two daughters, Jean Childress and husband, Gene, of Eastern Shore, Va., and Joy White and husband, Jim, of Rossville, Ga.; five grandchildren, Rob Childress, Shane Childress, Tonya Willett, Bill Adams, and Brett Adams; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Gerthel Hobbs Harris; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Dr. John Dale Hobbs officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Bill Adams, Brett Adams, Oscar Harris, Darell Carr, Randy Durham, Gary Lowe, and Jerry Durham.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Durham, Cecil Craft, Carl Durham, Bob Thomas, and Jim Orrick.

Pearl Forbes, 93, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Margaret Pearl Pettigrew Forbes, 93, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Saturday (Nov. 27, 2004) at Netherland HealthCare at Baysmont.

Born in Ontario, Canada, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Lilly Hartnett. Pearl came to the United States in 1942 and was naturalized in 1962. She moved to Kingsport in 1968 from Saginaw, Mich. For most of her life she owned and operated retail grocery businesses. She retired from Sears Roebuck where she was a head cashier.

Pearl was an auxiliary volunteer at Holston Valley Medical Center for 14 years and an active member of Tri-Cities Baptist Church.

Her first husband, Edward E. Pettigrew; her second husband, Andrew W. Forbes; a stepson, Donald Forbes; one brother, Joseph Hartnett; and two sisters, Ola Pettigrew and Verna Theursam preceded her in death.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Buddy and Peggy Pettigrew, Kingsport; one stepdaughter, Joyce Hallead, Avinger, Texas; one stepson, John Forbes, Baldwin, Kans.; two grandchildren, Cyndy McGovern and Kris Pettigrew; six great-granddaughters, four step-grandchildren; two sisters, Marion Oneil, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and Edith Shaw, Niagara Falls, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Tri-Cities Baptist Church.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today at the church with Associate Pastor Gene Mermilliod officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at East Lawn Memorial Park.

Honorary pallbearers will be Verlin Overbay, Paul Borisuk, and Charles Chandler.

Betty Gillenwater, 74, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - Betty Gillenwater, 74, entered into rest Sunday (Nov. 28, 2004) at her residence.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Gate City Funeral Home.

William H. Harrison, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - William H. Harrison passed away at home Wednesday (Nov. 24, 2004) from Parkinson's Disease.

Born Jan. 18, 1916 in Grand Island, Neb., Bill, as he was known to all, graduated from Iowa State University and began a 45-year career with Eastman Kodak in 1936 as a chemical engineer in Rochester, N.Y.

Married Nov. 30, 1940 to Emilia Marie Winiarski, Bill and Win moved to Kingsport and Tennessee Eastman in 1942. After a long career in the purchasing department, he retired from Tennessee Eastman as Vice President of Supply and Distribution in January 1981.

Bill was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and the National Purchasing Agents Association, where he served in several capacities at the national level.

He was also an active member of St. Dominic's Parish.

He was an avid golfer and his yard and flower gardens were his favorite hobby.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Josephine Harrison; and his son, Fred Joseph Harrison.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Emilia; two daughters and son-in-laws, Christine (Harrison) and Kenneth J. Dwyer II of Orlando, Fla., and Margaret (Harrison) and Kenneth R. Wolfe of Villa Hills, Ky.; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Harrison, of Knoxville; and three grandsons, Patrick William Harrison and Andrew Brendan Harrison, both of Knoxville, and Benjamin Wyatt Harrison Wolfe of Villa Hills, Ky.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hamlett Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.

A Christian wake prayer service will follow at 8 p.m.

Friends are welcome to visit the family at home as well.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Dominic's Catholic Church at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be at 12 noon in the family plot at Edgewood cemetery in Knoxville on Thursday.

The family would like to thank TLC Home Care Services, especially Louise Vaughn, Jamie Gilliam, Clayton and Eulala Arnold, Phoebe Kerns, Ethel Bowlin, Joan McLain, Stacey Stokes, and Emily DeFord, Drs. Eric Schwartz, Jeff Vaughan and Rick Dickson, the fifth floor nursing and support staff and the Respiratory Therapy staff at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital as well as Wellmont Home Health Care and Quality Care Ambulance Service for all their care and support over the years of Bill's illness.
