Edgar Lee (Ed) Hines, 86, Jonesville, Va.
JONESVILLE, Va. - Edgar Lee (Ed) Hines, 86, passed away Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2005) at Lee Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Pennington Gap, Va.
A lifelong resident of Lee County, Va., he was a retired merchant and a member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church of Jonesville, Va. He was also a member of Preston Lodge No. 47 AF&AM for 64 years and the Powell Valley Shriners.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Cornia Hines; four brothers, Rando, Paris, Otis and Harry Hines; five sisters, Mollie, Viola, Ruby, Myrtle and Hattie Mae.
Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Virginia Hines of Jonesville, Va.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Lee and Helen Hines of Nashville, N.C., Dennis and Sue Hines, Harold and Barbara Hines, and Larry and Nancy Hines, all of Jonesville, Va.; one daughter, Jeanette Hartley of Morristown, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Jonesville, Va.

R.C. "Doc" McConnell, 78, Big Stone Gap, Va.
BIG STONE GAP, Va. - R.C. "Doc" McConnell, 78, died Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2005) at Wellmont-Lonesome Pine Hospital.
He was born in Norton, Va., and lived most of his life in Big Stone Gap. He was a graduate of Big Stone Gap High School and a graduate of Medical College of Virginia Pharmacy School in Richmond, Va. He was owner and operator of the former Plaza Drug for over 40 years and had worked at Mutual Drug in Big Stone Gap for over 10 years.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the World War II era, having served as a Pharmacist Mate 3rd Class. He was a past member of the Kazim Shriners of Roanoke, Va., the Big Stone Gap Masonic Lodge #208, and the Powell Valley Shrine Club.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Big Stone Gap.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Theda Shelton McConnell; and his parents, R.C. "Claude" and Eula D. (Qualls) McConnell.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Hackney McConnell; one stepdaughter, Terry Gamble and husband, John, of Des Moines, Iowa; one stepson, Jerry Gardner and wife, Pam, of Nashville, Tenn.; two brothers, Paul McConnell and wife, LaNelle, of Annapolis, Md., and James McConnell and wife, Betty, of Hallwood, Va.; one aunt, Emily Qualls of Pound, Va.; stepmother, Velma McConnell of Norton, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Big Stone Gap.

ROSE HILL, Va. - Betty Shuler Montgomery, 73, passed away Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2005) at her home in Rose Hill.
She was born Dec. 28, 1931 in Keokee, Va., the daughter of the late Leonard and Darcus Yeary Shuler. She lived most of her life in Lee County and was of the Pentecostal faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward Montgomery; and one son, Michael Edward Montgomery; and several brothers and sisters.
Surviving are one son, Steven Montgomery and special daughter-in-law, Shannon Montgomery, and a special granddaughter, Jessica Montgomery, all of Rose Hill; one brother, Harry Shuler and wife Sally Shuler of Smith, Ky.; one sister, Louise Adams of Rose Hill; two half sisters, Jean Phillips and Pebble Herron of Exeter, Va.; two stepbrothers, Carl and James Stidham; several nieces and nephews whom she loved very much, and many friends who will miss her dearly.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Rose Hill, Va.

She was a daughter of Irene Cantrell Lacey of Gray and the late Lawrence "Bud" Lacey.
Mrs. Wilson was a district manager for Avon and a member of the Church of Christ in Kingsport.
Survivors in addition to her mother include her husband, Jerry Lee Wilson; three sons, Lee Wilson and his wife, Jana, Tim Wilson and his wife, Kimberly, and Mike Wilson and his wife, Amy, all of Gray; seven grandchildren, Cassie and Josh Wilson, Lydia Thomas and Caroline Wilson and Bailey and Jesse Wilson; three sisters, Nina Smith, Nashville, Mavis Haga, Fall Branch and Linda Garst of Boones Creek; several nieces and nephews.

JOHNSON CITY - Mrs. Dionne Byrd Young, 87, died at her residence Friday (Jan. 28, 2005).
She was a native of Barbourville, Ky., and had lived most of her life in Kingsport and Johnson City.
She was the proprietor of Rosepointe Apartments.
Mrs. Young was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit E. Young; her parents, Thomas H. Byrd and Mary Grinstead Byrd; and six brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Young was a member of Grace Temple.
Survivors include one daughter, Rosemary Young Brener, of New York City; one son, Kermit E. Young, Jr., of the home; granddaughter, Jan Marrs Brener; great-granddaughter, Jessie Brener and great-grandson, Max Coakley all of London, England. Also surviving is a nephew, Carl Young, Jr., Johnson City; nieces, Mary Young Hawkins, Nashville, Tenn., Betty Jane Moore, Grapeland, Tex., Ruth Ann Byrd, Houston, Tex., and Shelia Katherine Byrd, Atlanta, Ga.
A funeral service for Mrs. Young will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in the North Chapel of the Morris-Baker Funeral Home, Johnson City. Mr. Larry Crawford will officiate.
Burial will follow at Shelby Hills Cemetery, Bristol, Tenn.
