Augustus Hudson, 78, Greeneville.
GREENEVILLE - Augustus (Gus) Hudson, 78, died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2005) following a long illness.

Born in Georgia, he spent most of his life in Greeneville.

Gus was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Miller; and his mother, Minnie Ruth Hudson.

Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Oak Hill Memorial Park with Rev. Larry Morelock officiating. Family members and friends are asked to meet at the graveside.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gideon's International, P.O. Box 1382, Kingsport, Tenn. 37662.

Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport, is serving the Hudson family.

Douglas Johnson, 56, Kingsport.

Military graveside services for Douglas Michael "Mike" Johnson, 56, Kingsport, who passed away Sunday (Jan. 30, 2005), will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Mountain Home National cemetery with the American Legion Hammond Post #3 and Gate City Post #265 with Chaplain Joe W. Byrd officiating.

Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:55 p.m.

Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, is in charge of arrangements.

Vonda M. Jones, 73, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - Vonda M. Jones, 73, passed away Monday evening (Jan. 31, 2005) with her family by her side at Indian Path Medical Center after a lingering illness.

She was born in Scott County, Va., on Sept. 1, 1931 and was the daughter of the late K.J. Miller and Bertha Lee Flanary Miller. She had been a resident of East Carters Valley area since the age of six. She was a homemaker and a nurse at heart, spending alot of time helping and caring for others. She was known for her love and generosity. As a child she began singing with her daddy and sisters, and in later years enjoyed listening to gospel music.

Mrs. Jones was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Ralph H. Jones (Jan. 15, 2005); infant twin brother of three months of age, Vilder Ray Miller.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Walt Szadziewicz, Knoxville, Judy and Bobby Bright, Gate City, Va., (Yuma community); granddaughters, Myra Bright and fiancé Mike Trump, Mount Carmel, Leah Bright Rhodes and husband Michael, Yuma community; grandson, Shane Richards and wife Brenda, Tulsa, Okla.; sisters, Rose Brooks and Sue Luethke, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., and other times at the residence.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Tom (Tiger) Brooks Jr. officiating. The eulogy will be given by Jeff Luethke.

Music will be provided by Rev. Tom (Tiger) Brooks Jr., Paige Brooks, Lemuel Mixon.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Holston View Cemetery. The family will meet at 2 p.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Carroll Hurd, Joe Fleming, Hal Livergood, Russell Martin, Gerald Compton, Tom Taylor, Deano Francis, Jack Hobbs, Jimmy Maness, John Luethke, Larry Luethke.

Honorary pallbearers will be Harry McClellan, Roger Parton, Joe Newland, Kenneth Miller, Buck Arnold, Fred Luethke Jr., Tom Brooks Sr., and Ross Bright.

The family would like to extend their deepest thanks and appreciation to Mountain Empire Senior Citizens, Weber City Drugcenter, Holston Medical Group, especially Dr. Christopher Neglia, Dr. Shoaib S. Lateef, the 5th and 6th floor nurses, ICU and staff of Indian Path Medical Center, staff of BMA Dialysis of Kingsport, special friends Patsy Stevens, Mary and Buck Arnold, Wanda Kilgore, Harry McClellan, Audrey Taylor, Ross Bright, Jack and Jetta Hobbs, Sally Snodgrass, and all her friends from dialysis for their love and support.

Wallace Kibler, 92, Kingsport.
Services for Wallace Kibler, 92, Kingsport, who went to be with The Lord on Sunday morning (Jan. 30, 2005), will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the chapel of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport, with the Rev. Ralph Kidd officiating.

Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dean Morelock, Roy Hoover, Richard Cross, Hal McHorris, Jim White, and Henry Williams.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mafair United Methodist Church, 1409 E. Center Street, Kingsport, TN 37664.

Mildred B. Kite, 87, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - Graveside services for Mildred B. Kite, 87, of Kite Rd., who passed away Sunday morning (Jan. 30, 2005), will be held at 2 p.m. today at Kite Cemetery.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Christian-Sells Funeral Home in Rogersville is in charge of arrangements.

Mary McCroskey, 87, Blountville.
BLOUNTVILLE - Mary Whiteman McCroskey, 87, passed away at 5 p.m. Monday (Jan. 31, 2005) at Brookhaven Manor following a short period of declining health.

Born in Sullivan County on July 24, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Ossie Carico Whiteman. She had resided in this area her entire life.

Mrs. McCroskey retired from Sears in 1984 following 30-plus years of service as manager of the Catalog Department.

She was a member of the Blountville United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Y.A.H. group. Mrs. McCroskey was a member of the Pilot Club International.

She was an avid sports fan, who loved camping, boating and traveling. Her dearest love was dancing.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Brookhaven Manor for their care, comfort and concern shown to Mrs. McCroskey and to her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Malcolm Ray "Red" McCroskey in 2000; and by six sisters, Jewel Ramey, Mabel Shields, Charmie Repass, Willie Kate Phillips, Cleo Rodefer and Ruth Mullins; and by two brothers, Jim Whiteman and Fred Whiteman.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, DeAnna Smith and Wayne McDonald of Blountville; godchild, Cassie Aldridge of Atlanta, Ga.; three sisters-in-law, Carolyn Barnes and Louise Detherage, both of Kingsport, and Mabel Cook of Florida; one brother-in-law, Jack McCroskey of Blountville; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Friday at East Lawn Funeral Home.

Services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Katye Fox and the Rev. John Anderson will officiate.

Entombment will follow in East Lawn Mausoleum II.

Pallbearers will be Donnie Rodefer, Randy Rodefer, David Shields, Billy Shields, Tommy Ramey, Ronald Ramey and Phil Ramey.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Y.A.H. group of Blountville United Methodist Church.

The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Blountville United Methodist Church building fund, 3390 Highway 126, Blountville, Tenn. 37617.

Lawrence Moore, 85, Surgoinsville.
SURGOINSVILLE - Lawrence Moore, 85, passed away Monday morning (Jan. 31, 2005) at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital following a courageous battle with heart disease and diabetes.

Lawrence was a true patriot and soldier. He was wounded twice in combat for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1957 with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer W-2, having served his country for 20 years.

That he loved his family dearly was evident by watching his face light up at the antics of his grandchildren, by watching him nod his head from side to side with that "what can you do" expression as his children recounted events of the past, by watching his heart fill with joy when his wife returned home from the occasional hospital stay.

Lawrence was a quiet man. His grins, nods, or raised eyebrows were, like pictures, worth a thousand words. He also loved to farm, his idea of taking a break from digging post holes was to dig potatoes.

Lawrence was a member of Joseph Rogers VFW Post No. 9543 and American Legion Post No. 21.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Henry and Kate Moore; sister, Syble Vaughan; and brother, Ray Vaughn.

Surviving are his loving wife, to whom he would have been married 50 years this September 2nd, Jeanette Moore of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Henry and Debbie Moore of Chesapeake, Va., and David and Brenda Moore of Surgoinsville; daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Nick Aaron of Matthews, N.C.; grandchildren, Kelly Moore, Adam Moore, Christie Moore, Amanda Moore, Logan Moore, Rachel Aaron, and Matthew Aaron; great-granddaughter, Hannah Grace Moore; sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Jim Gates of Morristown; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville.

Services will follow at 8 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Dennis Price officiating.

Hawkins County Color Guard and the Tennessee Army National Guard will conduct military graveside services Thursday at 10 a.m. at Hawkins County Memorial Gardens.

Madge Quiggle, Kingsport.
Services for Helen Madge Quiggle, of Kingsport, who went to be with The Lord at her home Sunday (Jan. 30, 2005), will be conducted at 12 noon today at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Marvin Cameron officiating.

Burial will follow in Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Quiggle, Brandon Quiggle, Wes Quiggle, Steven Quiggle, Steve Quiggle, Richard Quiggle, and Michael Quiggle.

Family members have asked that, in lieu of flowers, all donations be made to Small Miracles Stables, 1205 J North Eastman Road, PMB 253, Kingsport, Tenn. 37664 in memory of Madge Quiggle.

Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, is in charge of arrangements.

Almeda Tate Sampson, 88, Gate City, Va.
Graveside services for Almeda Tate Sampson, 88, of East Jackson St., Gate City, Va., who went to be with the Lord unexpectedly Saturday morning (Jan. 29, 2005), will be held at 11 a.m. today at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va. It is requested that family and friends meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. today.

Pallbearers will be Stan Jenkins, Robbie Perry, Bill Fuller, Payton Jenkins, Ellis Lee Sampson II, Delaney Herron, Mike Sampson and Phill Overbey.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Gate City (building fund), P.O. Box 97, Gate City, VA 24251.

Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home is serving the Sampson family.

Jessie Dezarn Short, 89, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Jessie Dezarn Short, 89, 865 Poplar Grove Road, took her little crippled body to be with Jesus and Wes at 4:45 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 30, 2005).

She was born in Sullivan County where she had lived her entire life. Mrs. Short was a homemaker, great mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law.

She was a faithful member of Poplar Grove Primitive Baptist Church.

Her husband, John Wesley Short; parents, James and Rebekah Dezarn; daughter, Betty S. Dockery; grandson, Roy Alan Spurlock; twin sister, brother, and two half-brothers; two half-sisters; and son-in-law, John Stevens preceded her in death.

Surviving are daughters, Jeweldean Spurlock and husband Bill, Norma Hulse and husband John Henry, Jimmie Stevens, and Carolyn Oaks and husband Lonnie, all of Kingsport; two sons, Charles W. Short and Gary R. Short and wife Kay, Kingsport; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; 10 step grandchildren; several step great-grandchildren.

Calling hours were from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport, or anytime at the home of son, Charles Short, at 422 Twin Hill Road, Kingsport or the home of daughter, Jeweldean Spurlock, 844 Poplar Grove Road, Kingsport.

Services were conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Elder Oscar Irvin, Elder Eckel Head, and Rev. Mike Stout officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Hite Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Poplar Grove Primitive Baptist Church, c/o Jean Wallen, 744 Poplar Grove Road, Kingsport, Tenn. 37664.

The family would like to thank the Brookhaven staff, Dr. Kenneth Scott, and housekeeper, Aleti Bishop.

Russell Harry Wright, 59, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Russell Harry Wright, 59, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Sunday evening (Jan. 30, 2005) at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital following an extended illness.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Henry Wright III.

Surviving are his father and stepmother, Richard Wright Jr. and Hazel Wright of Kingsport; mother, Burma Wright of Kingsport; daughter, Misty Wright of Kingsport; six sisters, Joyce Gilliam, Janice Henry and husband, Al of Kingsport, Juanita Weddle and husband, David of Mount Carmel, Jackie Tipton, Connie Kaywood, June Arnold and husband, Ronnie, all of Kingsport; brother, Rickey Wright of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.

A special thank you goes out to Indian Path Hospital, Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital and Wellmont Hospice in the Eastman Hospitality House.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 2 p.m. today at Herman Methodist Church.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the church with the Rev. Gerald Bishop officiating.

Interment will follow in the Herman Methodist Church Cemetery.

Colboch-Price Funeral Home in Rogersville is in charge of arrangements.

William Wright, 92, Kingsport.
Services for William E. Wright, 92, Kingsport, who passed away Monday (Jan. 31, 2005), will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the chapel of Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating.

Music will be provided Mary Susan Acito.

Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Entombment services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Oak Hill Mausoleum. Those wishing to attend the entombment are asked to meet at the mausoleum by 12:55 p.m.
