Margaret Pedeta "Deedee" Layman, 91, died peacefully Thursday evening (March 3, 2005).
Born in Sevier County, Tenn., to Julia Virginia Seaton and William Newton Layman, also of Sevier County, Pedeta lived in Athens, Tenn., for many years where she was an employee of the Van Raalte Hosiery Mill. After her retirement, she moved to Nashville and later to Fall Branch where she resided at the time of her death.
Anyone who knew Pedeta loved her, not only for her kind heart, charming and fun-loving personality, but also for the way she delighted in creating and serving wonderful meals and desserts.
Pedeta was a member of Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church, where she donated her time and talents, providing many baked goods, homemade candies and jellies for church gatherings and fund-raising events.
She was preceded in death by her eight older brothers, Gilford, Clarence, Clyde, Hugh, Will, Bruce, Ted, and John Layman; and two older sisters, Blanche Layman and Hattie Cook.
She is survived by her children, Mary Layman Hughes and David Larry Layman, Sr. and wife, Susan; her grandchildren, Karen Hughes and husband, Steve Roberts, Christy Cantey and husband, Morgan Cantey, Kathy Smith and husband, Rick Smith, Teresa French and husband, Jimmy French, and David Larry Layman, Jr., and wife, Cindy; her great-grandchildren Maria Melville and husband, Chad Melville, Amanda French, Leigh Ann French, Brittanie French, Steele Cantey, Justin Roberts and Jamie Roberts; and one great-great-grandchild, Brylee Melville, who all loved her dearly.
Friends will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church located in the Sulphur Springs Community at 1432 Gray Station-Sulphur Springs Road.
Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at the church.
A committal service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Washington County Memory Gardens Mausoleum.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church Community Outreach Program, or to a charity that is close to your heart.

BLOUNTVILLE - Eula Locklear, 49, went to be with the Lord on Friday (March 4, 2005) at Indian Path Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

Alberta Marshall, 95, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Alberta Bellamy T. Marshall, 95, was born to George W. and Annie Akard Bellamy on Sept. 4, 1909 and died March 3, 2005 at Church Hill Health and Rehab Center after a lingering illness. It was Alberta's wish to go to her heavenly home.
Alberta attended elementary school in a Presbyterian School in Carter's Valley, then went to Church Hill High School when she was able to ride a horse. She began college in Johnson City and had to quit so she could take care of her ill mother.
Following her mother's death, she married
Tommy C. Templeton and had a son, Tommy C. Templeton, Jr. Her son, Tommy, Jr., and his wife, Patsy Pierce Templeton had two sons.
Mrs. Marshall was very active in church work at First Methodist Church in Kingsport. After her husband died, she remarried to William Marshall. She and her husband then joined Mount. Carmel United Methodist Church, where she served as secretary to the Sunday School. Knowing each child by name in her church, she bought them a Christmas gift each year as long as she was able to do so. The church was first in her life. She was a loving and giving person, and made afghans and gave them to the employees at Baysmont.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Tommy Templeton, Sr. and William J. Marshall; her parents, George W. Bellamy and Annie Akard Bellamy; and one son, Tommy Templeton, Jr.
She is survived by one grandson, James Robert "Bobby" Templeton of Nashville, Tenn.; three great-grandchildren, Summer, Stone, and Jason; two sisters, Annie Elizabeth Calhoun and husband, Fred of Church Hill and Juanita McCulley of Kingsport; one niece and two nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the Oak Hill Memorial Park with Pastor Steve Gott and Rev. Larry DeVault officiating.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery prior to services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Carmel United Methodist Church.

KNOXVILLE - Gertrude Summers Moore, 99, formerly of Mooresburg, passed away Thursday evening (March 3, 2005) at Shannondale Nursing Facility in Knoxville.
She was a member of the Rogersville Presbyterian Church and was a retired school teacher having taught in Hawkins County and Post Mistress for Mooresburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank W. Moore.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Frank S. and Leigh Moore of McMinnville; two granddaughters, Sumner A. Moore of Nashville and Barrett Moore of McMinnville; and numerous cousins.

KINGSPORT - Mary Emily Shrader Neff, 83, went to be with the Lord on Thursday morning (March 3, 2005) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a sudden illness.
She was born in Wytheville, Va., but had resided most of her life in Kingsport. She was a faithful member of Bethel Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Neff was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. After raising her family, she enjoyed a second career for nearly two decades as a sales associate for the Why Not Shop in Kingsport.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald "Jake" Neff, Sr.; her father and mother; and two brothers.
Surviving are two daughters, Judy A. Stapleton and husband, Kenneth B., Chuckey, Tenn., Jeanne Neff Feil and husband, Gary M., Sacramento, Calif.; one son, Donald J. Neff, Jr. and wife, Terri, Kingsport; four grandchildren, Cindy Anderson, Daniel J. Hodge, Loren Feil, and Bryan Feil; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Eanes, Chesapeake, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT - Cheryl Kay Childers Reed, 40, was escorted by the angels to be with our Lord Thursday morning (March 3, 2005) at Holston Valley Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
She graduated from East Tennessee State University and was a special education teacher in Lexington, N.C. prior to becoming ill.
Cheryl was a distinguished "candy striper" with over one thousand hours.
She was of the Methodist faith and attended St. Matthew United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Whittney Lanette Stout, and Sarah Meagan Starnes; two sons, Joshua John Stout and Joseph Aaron Stout, all of Kingsport; parents, Francis and Jerree Childers, Kingsport; two sisters, Trina Carol Powers and husband, Fred, Houston, Tex., and Neysa Jerree Laymon and husband, Donnie, Kingsport; grandmother, Stacy Blanton, Kingsport; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; true and faithful friends, Aunt Pat, Aunt Arlene, Chris Blue and Rosa James.
Services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport with Rev. Joel H. Campbell officiating and the eulogy given by Rev. Donnie Laymon.

Mary Helen Savage, 81, Jonesville, Va.
JONESVILLE, Va. - Mary Helen Carter Savage, 81, of the Flatwoods area of Jonesville, Va., died on Thursday (March 3, 2005), after a brief illness.
She was the wife of William F. Savage and daughter of the late Washington Smith Carter and the late Kathleen Merriman Carter of Jonesville, Va.
Born in Lee County, she did both her undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Kentucky. She also taught school in Kentucky, Ohio, and Virginia. She was a member of the Flatwoods United Methodist Church, the Women's Society of Christian Service, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Order of the Eastern Star. For 23 years prior to her husbands retirement, they lived in the Washington, D.C. area.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert E. Carter; and her sister-in-law, Rhea L. Carter.
Surviving are her husband; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Greg Cornett of Kingsport; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Rana of Ft. Leavenworth, Kans.; along with grandchildren, William Blane Cornett, Morgan Maye Savage, and Cody Carter Savage.
She loved her family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Flatwoods United Methodist Church in Jonesville, Va.
Services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the church with the Rev. Jim Marshall officiating.
Burial will follow in the family cemetery in the Flatwoods area of Jonesville, Va.

Surviving are one daughter, Jean Berkley and husband Walter, Kingsport; daughter-in-law, Carol Short, Kingsport; six grandchildren, Denise Whetsel, Yvette Berkley, Sonya Williams, Tonya Miller, Chris Short, and Mellette Powers; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Shelton, Abingdon, Va.; brother, Keith Overbay, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.

Buford Smith, 69, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Buford E. Smith, 69, went to be with the Lord late Thursday evening (March 3, 2005) at Bristol Hospice House.
Mr. Smith was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County (Kingsport). He served in the U.S. Air Force for over five years. He was employed at Mason-Dixon Lines for over 18 years and retired from Heartland Express as a senior mechanic and supervisor.
Mr. Smith was a member for over 30 years at Orebank Missionary Baptist Church where he also served as a deacon of the church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Odie Smith and Luna Baldwin Smith; one sister, Edith Salley; and one brother, Don Smith.
Surviving are his wife of more than 49 years, Elva Massey Smith, of the home; daughter, Tracy Vinson, Orlando, Fla.; sons, David Smith and Randy Smith and wife Andrea, all of Sarasota, Fla.; very special grandson, Christian Vinson; sister, Faye Overbay, Kingsport; brothers, Odie Smith Jr. and wife Mildred, Gulfport, Miss., Ted Smith, Kingsport and Billy Smith and wife, Darlene, Michigan; several nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT - L.B. Stacy, Jr., 65, of Goodview Drive, went to be with the Lord at 8 a.m. Friday (March 4, 2005) at Indian Path Medical Center following an extended illness.
He retired from Holston Defense Corp. where he was a locksmith after 34 years of service. L.B. was an avid fisherman and loved woodworking.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Priscilla Stacy (Aug. 2001); and one sister, Linda Spurlock.
Surviving are one daughter, Revena Stacy, Unicoi, Tenn.; two sons, George Stacy, Unicoi, Tenn., and Charles Stacy and wife, Regilla, Mount Carmel; three grandchildren, Miles Stacy, Darin Brandt, and Kaisha Hickey; his parents, L.B.
