John Stewart, III, 61, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - John Stewart, III, 61, was called home by his Heavenly Father on Wednesday (March 2, 2005) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
John was born in Kingsport where he had lived all of his life. His Christian walk was unquestionable, for he was his word and his word was God. At the age of nine, he was saved and became a member of Central Baptist Church where he served on numerous committees and boards that he believed was work for the Lord.
John was a 1962 graduate of Douglass High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp. from 1962 until 1966 and was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal. Later he would become a member of the National Guard in Gate City, Va., where he served with the 1030th Engineer Battalion for 21 years, retiring as a Staff Sergeant. He also served in Desert Storm where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
He was a civic-minded individual who worked tirelessly in the community and the city of Kingsport. Among the many awards he received from the military, church, job and community, he received the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award in 1975. As well, John had served as president of the Douglass Alumni Association from 1999 to 2001.
While in the Marine Corp., he attended East Carolina College and upon being discharged, returned home to continue his education, graduating from Steed Business College. He was employed at Kingsport Boys Club and later worked for 31 years at Tennessee Eastman Company, where he received numerous awards and recognition for suggestions that would improve the company.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Stewart, Jr., and Louise McClintock Stewart.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 41 years, Brenda (Penny) Stewart of Kingsport; daughters, Seana Meddling and husband, Donald of Nashville, Nina Stewart of Atlanta, and Joy Stewart of Kingsport; grandson, John Manesseh Meddling of Nashville; sisters, Louetta Hall of Kingsport and Mary Kathy Pride and husband, Gilbert of Asheville, N.C.; brother, Lucious Stewart of Oakland, Calif.; mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary Johnson; a loving sister-in-law, Ms. Wanda Johnson; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; a devoted family friend, Fredia Flack.
Calling hours are from 12 noon to 2 p.m. today at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport.
A celebration of John's life will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Bill Hampton, Rev. Rochelle Maxwell and the Rev. James Whiteside officiating.
A military graveside service will be conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post No. 3 and Gate City Post No. 265 at Holston View cemetery immediately following the chapel service.
Pallbearers will be Jack Pierce, Carter Johnson, William Kincaid, David Horton, Willie Hodges, Ozine Bly, Bill Hartgrove, David Luther, Montgomery Hunter, Willard Clay Long and Avery Logan.

Services for Wanda Faye Tankersley, 65, of Kingsport, who went to be with the Lord on Tuesday (March 1, 2005), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in the chapel of Oak Hill Funeral Home with Pastor Phil Kestner officiating.

Charlie Taylor, 70, Nickelsville, Va.
NICKELSVILLE, Va. - Charlie Elwood Taylor, 70, entered into rest Thursday (March 3, 2005) at Wellmont Bristol Hospice House, Bristol, TennN.
He was born in Scott County, Va. on April 22, 1934 to the late George and Lona Orean McConnell Taylor.
Including his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Lilburn Taylor and Roy Lee Taylor.
Survivors include one son, Ralph Ervin Taylor, Gate City, Va.; sister, Lois Noel, Nickelsville, Va.; and brother, Delmar Taylor, Fall Branch; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Eddie Taylor officiating.
Music will be provided by Debbie and David Easterling.
Burial will follow the service at Taylor Family Cemetery, Taylortown community.

GATE CITY, Va. - Marie Alley, 79, of Route 3, passed away Thursday (March 3, 2005) at Holston Valley Medical Center.
She was born in Scott County, Va. on Jan. 27, 1926, and was the daughter of the late Earl Taylor and Almeda Peters Taylor. She was a homemaker and a member of Moores Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lofie Alley; daughter, Mary Ann Poole; sisters, Sally Quillen, Bertha Taylor, Mae Peters, Ola Lloyd, Polly Ann Taylor; brothers, Guy Taylor, Ed Taylor, Tom Taylor, Jack Taylor, Robert Taylor, Joe Earnest Taylor and Owen Peters.
Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Emma and Wallace Lane, Gate City, Va., Cathy and Larry Bushong, Kingsport; sons and daughter-in-law, Philip and Susan Alley, Weber City, Va., Billy Alley and John Alley, of the home; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

ROGERSVILLE - Bobbie Marie Davis Anderson, 77, formerly of 179 Stanley Valley Road, passed away Wednesday (March 2, 2005) at St. John's Healthcare in Gray following an extended illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County and was a homemaker.
She was a member of Looney's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester John Anderson Sr. (2003); one son, Scott Anderson; her parents, Bert and Annie Pratt Davis; and five brothers.
Surviving are her daughters, Wanda Bruner and her husband, Bobby, Surgoinsville and Audrey Mahoney, Tempe, Ari.; son, Lester John Anderson Jr. and wife Pauline, Piney Flats; grandchildren, Robby Barton, Scotty Anderson, Johnathan Barton, Carol Rimer, Cindy Winegar, Miles Mahoney and Kelvin Mahoney; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Burton, Rogersville and Faye Barnette, Kingsport; also several nieces and nephews.

Joe D. Carter, 78, Hiltons, Va.
HILTONS, Va. - Joe Dougherty Carter, 78, went to be with the Lord late Wednesday afternoon (March 2, 2005) at his residence following an illness.
Joe was born Feb. 27, 1927 and was the son of the late Alvin Pleasant Delaney (A.P.) and Sara Dougherty Carter of Hiltons, Va. Although he never used his music as his sole means of support, it played a major role in his life. After his tour of duty with the U.S. Navy during the latter part of World War II. Joe managed to become an apprentice to a master carpenter. His skills in this profession earned him a reputation that stretches far beyond the borders of Virginia and Tennessee, as he has devoted more than 30 years of his life to the business of construction.
Together, with his sisters, Gladys and Janette, Joe was personally involved with the Saturday night musical sessions at the "Carter Fold" - just next door to his dad's old grocery store (now a museum) - near Hiltons, Va. Joe's full, rich bass voice along with Janette on the autoharp echoes out every Saturday for young and old to get a glimpse of Carter Family music at its best. Joe was a member of the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jeffery Delaney Carter; and a sister, Gladys Millard.
Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa A. and Skip Dickerson, Connie Joe and Rudy Keller and Benita Je-lene and Steve Jones; seven grandchildren, Trevor Keller, Regan Keller, Matthew Dickerson, Casey Dickerson, Kelli Keller Gilliam, Joshua Jones and Jacob Jones; and a sister, Janette Carter.

CHURCH HILL - Orland E. Cline, 80, 107 Elm St., went to be with the Lord at 7 p.m. on Wednesday (March 2, 2005) at Indian Path Medical Center following an extended illness.
Mr. Cline was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County. He worked at the Kingsport Press for over 15 years before retiring from the Hawkins County Board of Education as a school bus driver with over 25 years of service.
He was a member of Valley Center United Methodist Church in Stanley Valley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andy Cline and Mary Ann Coffman Cline; two sisters, Bessie Cline and Mary Bell Mellons; two brothers, Bert Cline and John Cline.
Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years, Velma Larkins Cline, of the home; sister, Verna Castle, Gate City, Va.; along with several nieces and nephews.
