Always an avid sports enthusiast, he was a star athlete at Rogersville High School, graduating in 1933. At Lincoln Memorial University, he was an honor roll student, "three letterman" in football, basketball and track, and captain of the basketball team. In 1937, he was named coach of the high school girls basketball team in Church Hill, where he taught school.
He moved to Philadelphia in the late 1930s where his expert marksmanship earned him a position at Eastern State Penitentiary guarding notorious bank robber Willie Sutton and 200 other inmates. During World War II, he was a teacher in the special training units and a basic training instructor at both Fort Jackson, S.C., and Fort Bragg, N.C. Along with privates, he also trained Army dogs-as his five children were growing up years later, he'd often shake his head and say dogs were easier to train than kids.

In his retirement, he was a member of the Bensalem Senior Citizens, where he enjoyed playing bridge and pinochle and excelled in state senior competitions for billiards. He was also a dedicated organic gardener.
Genealogy and his family heritage were his special passion. He delighted in telling the stories of his ancestors, who included Milum Davis Livesay, Union veteran, Stephen Surgener and James Testerman, Confederate veterans, James Livesay, veteran of the War of 1812, and George Livesay, veteran of the American Revolution. All of these lived in the Kyles Ford-Blackwater area. He was an active member for more than 40 years and former president of the Livesay Historical Society, a genealogical organization with international membership which met last summer in Kingsport.
