Betty Inez Hobbs, 80, Jonesborough.
JONESBOROUGH - Betty Inez Hobbs, 80, of Jonesborough, went to be with the Lord on Monday (Feb. 28, 2005) at her home.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Oak Hill Funeral Home.

Fred Lane, 63, Ft. Blackmore, Va.
FT. BLACKMORE, Va. - Fred Gene Lane, 63, entered into rest Monday (Feb. 28, 2005) at his residence.

He was born in Scott County, Va., April 27, 1940, to the late James Ira Lane and Nora Ava Lane.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Lane.

Survivors include three sisters, Lucille Lawson, Gate City, Va., Nellie Ingle, Gate City, Va., and Ethel Frasier, Ft. Blackmore; three brothers, Bill Lane, James Lane and Burin Lane, all of Ft. Blackmore; special friends, Ken Lane, Ft. Blackmore, Jack Frasier, Ft. Blackmore, Bob Frasier, Kingsport, Samuel Gillenwater, Ft. Blackmore, and Charles McDavid, Gate City, Va.; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 today at Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. George Willis and the Rev. Eddie "Sonny" Starnes officiating.

Music will be provided by James McConnell.

Burial will follow the service at the Lane Family Cemetery, Ft. Blackmore, Va.

Pallbearers will be nephews, Jimmy Lane, Jeff Lane, Randall Lane, Ed Frasier, Junior Lane and Charles McDavid.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ken Lane, Jack Frasier, Bob Frasier and Samuel Gillenwater.

Russell O. Large, 82, Coeburn, Va.
COEBURN, Va. - Russell O. Large, 82, a prominent businessman of Coeburn residing in Abingdon, Va., passed away Sunday (Feb. 27, 2005) in the Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Va.

He was born in Coeburn, Va., on Feb. 9, 1923 and resided there most of his life. He was a member of the Coeburn United Methodist Church and a graduate of Emory & Henry College. He was a sergeant in the Army Air Corps from 1943-1946, and served in the Pacific Theatre as a flight engineer and top turrent gunner in B-24's.

He was a former vice mayor of Coeburn and a member of the town council. Mr. Large was a member of the Coeburn Masonic Lodge #97 AF&AM, past president and member of the Coeburn Kiwanis Club, chairman of the Coeburn Beautification Committee, lifetime member of the Patrick Henry Society of the Emory & Henry College, and a member of the Board of Visitors.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. W.T. and Bessie Large; infant daughter, Deborah; two brothers, Troy Allen Large and W.T. Large Jr.; five sisters, Rita Jo and Mildred Large, Kay Hord, June Chase and Charlotte Mullins.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Myrtle Ruth Horne Large; his son, Russell (Marty) Large and wife, Charlene of Abingdon, Va.; his daughter, Ruth Elaine and husband, Norwood Clemons of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Russell Wade Clemons of Emory, Va., Kathryn and Kimberly Large of Abingdon, Va.; sisters, Emma White of Bristol, Va., and Mary Helen Porter and husband Jim of Wytheville, Va.; brother, Donald W. Large and wife, Margaret of Gate City, Va.; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on the family from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Coeburn United Methodist Church.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today at the church with Dr. Don Large and Dr. E.D. Nelson officiating.

Music will be provided by the Coeburn United Methodist Church Choir and Dr. Don Large.

Entombment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Va. The family and friends will meet at the cemetery for entombment services.

Pallbearers will be nephews, Charles Chase, Joe Chase, Jerry Chase, James White, Scott White, John White and William White.

Honorary pallbearers will be Pickford Stallard, Frank Stacy, Jack Jones, Harold Ringley, Jake Turner, Tommy Newton and Randy Wireman.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Coeburn United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 638, Coeburn, Va. 24230 or the American Heart Association Mid-Atlantic Affiliate Memorial & Tributes Processing Center, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058-5216.

Dan C. Laster Jr., 66, Bulls Gap.
BULLS GAP - Dan C. Laster Jr., 66, of Bulls Gap, passed away Sunday (Feb. 27, 2005) from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced later by Christian-Sells Funeral Home in Rogersville.

Alberta R. Morrison, 90, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Alberta (Raber) Morrison, 90, of Wellington Place of Colonial Heights, passed away on Monday (Feb. 28, 2005) after a period of declining health.

Alberta was born in Williston, N.D., on Jan. 1, 1915, a daughter of the late Albert and Edna (Koons) Raber. She was a member of Belvue Christian Church and was a former member of Eastern Star in Glouster, Ohio.

In addition to her parents, Alberta was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold Morrison; beloved son, Larry Raber Morrison; sisters, Hazel Raber, Eva Anson and Emalene Zimmer; and brother, John Raber.

Surviving are her son, Michael Morrison and wife Donna of Coral Springs, Fla.; daughter, Jill Williams and husband Henry of Blountville; grandchildren, Todd Morrison, H. Lee McKinney, Victoria Tipton, Brent Williams and wife Rebecca, Brooke TeVrucht and husband Michael, and Mandy Morrison; great-grandchildren, Mason and Mallory TeVrucht and Sophia Williams; and special friend, Ginny Stapleton.

There will be a combined entombment service for Alberta and her husband Harold, to be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the East Lawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum with Dr. John Owston officiating.

The family would like to thank the Wellington Place staff and Dr. Mary Jane Gibson for all the loving care and compassion they have shown our mother during her stay with them.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

East Lawn is serving the Morrison family.

Clyde Mullins, 70, Norton, Va.
NORTON, Va. - Clyde Mullins, 70, passed away Saturday (Feb. 26, 2005) at his home.

He was a U.S. Army veteran with 20 years of military service, serving in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He was a former employee of Mullins Security.

Surviving are two sisters, Dixie Gibson of Norton, Va., and Faye Anderson of Elizabethtown, Ky.; three nephews, Stephen Gibson and Robert Gibson, both of Norton, Va., and Lilburn Mullins of Texas; two nieces, Carol Anderson and Jeri Lynn Oakes, both of Elizabethtown, Ky.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Wise Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery.

At. Mr. Mullins' request he was cremated.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity or church of one's choice.

Sturgill Funeral Homes in Wise, Va., is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Jack Nolen, 74, Oklahoma.
OKLAHOMA - Dr. Jack Richard Nolen, 74, died on Jan. 14, 2005 in an airplane accident in Eastern Oklahoma. He was found on Feb. 14, 2005.

He was a private pilot for many years and had recently returned to flying, which he loved so much.

He was born in Alexander City, Ala. He lost his own father in an accident at the age of four, yet worked hard and eventually earned his way to a B.S. degree at Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn) in 1951 and then an M.D. degree at the University of Alabama in 1955.

After an internship and residency, he served two years in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps Reserve in the Naval Hospital in Key West, Fla.

In 1962, he began more than 20 years of private practice in obstetrics and gynecology in Gadsden, Ala. In the later years of his medical practice, he relocated to Philadelphia, Pa., Aberdeen, Wash., and Louisburg, N.C. In the 1990s, he changed careers to be in hospital administration working in Newark, N.Y., and finally as Medical Director at Muskogee Regional Medical Center in Muskogee, Okla. He retired Jan. 1, 2005 although was continuing to work part time.

As a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, he was a faithful Christian who never let his talents go to waste. He was most recently volunteering at the Good Shepherd Health Clinic and a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Muskogee, Okla.

Jack Nolen always treasured his family and was a loving father, grandfather and faithful husband.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thirwell Murfee Nolen and Cleona Black Nolen; by his eldest son, Norman Edward Nolen; by his oldest brother, Thirwell Murfee Nolen Jr.; and by his first wife, Suzy Bernell Gray Nolen.

He is survived by sons, Thirwell Matthew Nolen of New York City, Timothy Richard Nolen and wife Sharon of Kingsport, Philip Andrew Nolen of Orlando, Fla., Jack Richard Nolen Jr., of Birmingham, Ala.; and daughter, Susan Paige Nolen of Muskogee, Okla. He has a grandson, Samuel Richard Nolen, and a granddaughter, Abigail Lynn Nolen, both of Kingsport. He is also survived by a brother, John Frank Nolen and wife Sara, of Gadsden, Ala.; a sister-in-law Julie Nolen; and by ex-wife, Susan McColley of Muskogee. He is also survived by a niece, Jane Gargus and nephews, John Henry Nolen and wife Elizabeth, and Thirwell Murfee (Trey) Nolen III and wife Stacy of Gadsden, Ala.

The family is grateful to the many volunteers and law enforcement officials who aided in the search for his lost plane.

Memorial contributions in memory of Jack Nolen may be given to the Good Shepherd Health Clinic, c/o St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2130 W. Okmulgee St., Muskogee, Okla. 74401.

A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Gadsden, Ala., on Saturday (March 5, 2005) at 5 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Kenneth Casey.

There will be a visitation time in the parlor at First Methodist from 3 to 5 p.m.

Claude Riddle, 91, Jonesborough.
JONESBOROUGH - Mr. Claude Riddle, 91, died Saturday (Feb. 26, 2005) at the Johnson City Medical Center from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Mr. Riddle was born in Unicoi County and was a son of the late William L. and Mollie Gouge Riddle. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Riddle.

Mr. Riddle was a longtime member of Second Baptist Church in Jonesborough. He served as church superintendent of Sunday School and was presently chairman of the deacons. He and his wife had a singing ministry for the Lord for 35 years known as "Singing Riddles." They sang in many area churches.

Mr. Riddle drove a truck for many years for Smith Wholesale and Cox & Rich Wholesale. He retired from Klopman Mills.

He was loved by everyone who knew him. He loved his Lord so much and wanted everyone to know the Lord too. He was a member of the United Commercial Travelers Insurance Company since 1950.

Surviving are his wife of 71 years, Eula Kate Broyles Riddle of the home; a daughter, Betty Joyce Martin, Kingsport; two sons, Jimmy and wife Phyllis Riddle, Telford, and Harold and wife Faye Riddle, Kingsport; a sister, Callie Jean White, South Carolina; four brothers, Howard and wife Ina Riddle, Limestone, Paul Riddle, Johnson City, Dwight Riddle, California, and Bill Riddle, Florida; three grandchildren, Randall and wife Becky Riddle, Johnson City, Robin and husband Gary Baines, Jonesborough, and Sychia Carter, Kingsport; four great-grandchildren, Peyton Baines, Jonesborough, Lucas Carter, Kingsport, Steven Timbs and Lucas Timbs, both of Johnson City; a special friend, John Wolfe of Rogersville; and a host of many friends and loved ones; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home, Jonesborough.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Joe Beaver and the Rev. Terry Able officiating.

Music will be provided by One Accord.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Philadelphia Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be deacons of Second Baptist Church, Gary Baines, Terry Proffitt, Joe Presley, Danny Frances, Dennis Counts and Carson Tate.

Honorary pallbearers will be former and present church members he worshiped with.

Myrtle M. Spivey, 79, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Myrtle M. Spivey, 79, went to be with our Lord and Savior early Monday (Feb. 28, 2005).

Arrangements and survivors will be announced later by Oak Hill Funeral Home.

Allie Frazier Stanley, 81, Duffield, Va.
Services for Allie Frazier Stanley, 81, Duffield, who entered into rest Saturday (Feb. 26, 2005), will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of The Duffield Funeral Home at Thomas Village with Evangelist Garry Hood and the Rev. Steve Rogers officiating.

Music will be provided by the Hood Family Singers and Courtney and Tyler Rogers.

Committal services will follow in the Cox Chapel cemetery in Duffield.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

M. Creed Tate, 88, Big Stone Gap, Va.
BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Marvin Creed Tate, 88, born March 21, 1916, passed away on Sunday (Feb. 27, 2005) at Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital after a brief illness.

Excerpt from "Wise County, Virginia's World War II Veterans, A Tribute"...

Navy Gunners Mate Chief, enlisted in the Navy in August of 1936 and served continuously for 20 years, 6 months, retiring in 1957. During his early enlistment Creed was stationed in China and visited the Great Wall.

He served on the USS Pecos, USS King (Destroyer), USS Altair (Repair Ship), the Submarine Tender USS Pelias (Pearl Harbor), and with the amphibious forces aboard the USS Star.

Creed was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on Dec. 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The USS Pelias is credited with downing at least one Japanese Zero while Creed was manning one of two 3-inch guns aboard the ship. During World War II, he served in the Pacific theater, Australia, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. While at sea near Okinawa, the ship was struck by a Japanese suicide boat and damaged. The ship returned to the U.S. for repairs before returning for duty. Creed was stationed in Guam at the time of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.

He returned to the U.S. and was stationed at the Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, Md., to train Naval recruits. After the closing of the training center in Bainbridge, he was transferred to the Naval Training Center at San Diego, Calif., where he continued to train recruits. He returned to sea duty aboard the USS Nespelian. He later was a gunnery trainer at Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Yorktown, with his last station in Honolulu, Hawaii.

"The Chief" was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, China Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupational Service Medal, and National Defense Medal.

Creed was married to Rosalie France of Benham, Ky., and had daughters, Rose Marie Tate and Sue Ellen Tate Baker. He has one grandson, Jessee Creed Baker. His brothers, whom he fondly refers to as "The Crackers Neck Boys, " also served during World War II: Woodrow "Chunky" Tate in the Marines, Fleet "Cowboy" Tate in the Army, and Jim "Pokey" Tate in the Navy.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie France Tate; brothers, Bob Tate, Howard Tate, Woodrow Tate, James P. Tate; and sister, Easter Vanhook.

Creed is survived by his daughters, Rose Marie Tate of Virginia Beach, Va., and Sue Ellen Tate Baker and husband Gary Baker, and his beloved grandson, Jessee Creed Baker, all of Big Stone Gap; brother, Fleet Tate of Big Stone Gap, Va.; and sister, Ida Tate Fraley of Big Stone Gap, Va.; and was blessed to have many nieces and nephews who have had successful lives and careers all over the country from Alaska to New York to Florida.

The family also wishes to acknowledge his special friends, Randall Hampton, Les Blevins, Roger and Pat Akers, Jeffrey Holyfield and family, Lois Hamilton and family, his many friends from Hardees and Dairy Queen, and his wonderful neighbors in Crackers Neck.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Holding Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, Va.

Military rites, by Norton VFW Post No. 4301, will follow at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.

Family and friends will go in procession to the cemetery.

The family respectfully requests no flowers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 203 W. Main St., Abingdon, Va. 24210, in the name of Creed Tate to honor his nephew, Marvin Vanhook.

Cleo Taylor, 78, Nickelsville, Va.
Graveside services for Cleo Easterling Taylor, 78, of Route 2, Taylortown community, Nickelsville, who passed away Saturday (Feb. 26, 2005), will be at 11 a.m. today at Holston View Cemetery. The family will meet at the funeral home at 10:15 to go in procession to the cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Ed Taylor, Roger Easterling, David Easterling, Danny Howell, Danny Hall, and Bill Buchannon.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bud Taylor, Kyle Smith, Edwin Dingus, Don Kendrick, and Zane Parks.

Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., is in charge of arrangements.
