Ruth B. Javens, 87, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Ruth B. Javens, 87, died Wednesday morning at Indian Path Medical Center after an extended illness.

Born in Kingsport where she resided most of her life, she was 1937 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Preceding her in death were her son, Robert Bernard Javens; two brothers, Beryl W. Bernard and Claude T. Bernard; and a sister, Mary B. Mumford.

Surviving are one grandson, Scott Javens, Kingsport; one brother, George W. Bernard and wife, Vena and their son, Sam, all of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 10 to 11 a.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at the funeral home with Dr. Victor Priebe officiating.

Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church, 100 W. Church Circle, Kingsport, Tenn. 37660.

Barbara Joan Lamberson, 75, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Barbara Joan Lamberson, 75, passed away Wednesday (March 29, 2005) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on July 26, 1929 in Kingsport and graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School. She later earned a real estate license through the Kingsport Adult Education. She never felt the need to leave her hometown, serving in business at Shaw Sheet Metal Works with her stepfather until it's closing in 1978. Following her retirement from Shaw Sheet Metal, she worked in the Administration Office of Kingsport Housing Authority from 1984 to 1998. Prior to that she served by Mayor's appointment as a commissioner with that organization for seven years. Joan also served on Board of Directors as charter member of the Kingsport Sheltered Workshop, charter member of Kingsport Girls Club, board member of Kingsport Boys Club and was awarded the Man and Boy Award. As a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club she received the Woman of Achievement Award. She served as charter member and president of the Altrusa Club of Kingsport. She was speaker for Speakers Bureau of the Kingsport Council of Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. Under three separate Governors' appointments, she served several years as a member of the Tennessee Governor's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped and coordinator for the Sullivan County Committee on Employment of the Handicapped. In 1972 she was awarded the State of Tennessee's Department of Civil Defense Certificate of Commendation. In 1974 she was awarded Governor Ray Blanton's and the State of Tennessee Distinguished Volunteer Award. She was also a volunteer for Contact Concern. Joan was honored to be mentioned in Marquis' Who's Who in American Women, Community Leaders of America, Two-Thousand Women of Achievement and Personalities of the South.

She was a member of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church where she also served as a Deacon.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lucille and stepfather, Sewell Williams; aunt and uncle, Virginia and Bill McIntosh; and a very special cousin, Julie McIntosh Strickler.

She is survived by very special cousins, Dr. Jerry McIntosh and wife, Vina, Tucker, Ga.; their two sons, Judson McIntosh, Lawrenceville, Ga., and Andrew McIntosh, Atlanta, Ga.; a cousin, Linda Mullenix, Johnson City; and many special friends.

Calling hours are from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Saturday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Oak Hill cemetery with Rev. Daniel S. Clark officiating.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport is serving the family of Joan Lamberson.

Harold (Hal) Lane, Sonora, Calif.
SONORA, Calif. - Harold (Hal) Lane, died March 18, 2005 at his home.

Mr. Lane was born in Gate City, Va. on May 20, 1924. He left there to join the Army Air Corps in 1942. He spent 22 years as an Air Force pilot. He served in World War II and was over Normandy and D-Day. He was awarded The Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three Bronze Clusters for extraordinary achievement. He retired as a lieutenant colonel and went on to work as a trust officer with the Bank of America in San Jose for 15 years, before moving to Sonora.

Surviving are his wife, Dolores; children, Stephen, Nancy and Mary Beth Lane; stepchildren, Linda Campbell, Steve Lee, Susan Patrick and Kassie Kemper; a sister, Betty Williams and her daughter, Lisa Williams.

There will be a graveside service at Golden Gate National cemetery at 1 p.m. today.

Lester Pleasant, 91, Dryden, Va.
DRYDEN, Va. - Lester Ernest Pleasant, 91, passed away Wednesday (March 30, 2005) at Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap.

He had resided in Lee County since 1985. Lester was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Inman Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army and was previously employed by the Montgomery College.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Pleasant; his parents, Frank and Ada Pleasant; three brothers, Frank, Vernon and Harold Pleasant.

He is survived by three sons, Chester Pleasant, Myersville, Md., Earnest Pleasant, Kearneysville, W.Va., Bobby Pleasant, Damascus, Md.; five daughters, Rhonda Williams, Dryden, Va. Brenda Russell, Silver Springs, Md., Saundra Pleasant, Frederick, Md., Paula Myers, Frederick, Md., Pamela Kelly, Gaitehersburg, Md.; a brother, Kenneth Pleasant, Big Stone Gap; sisters, Virginia Lane, Hamilton, Ohio, Particia Leonard, Hamilton, Va., Lillie Akens, Big Stone Gap, Pansy Giza, Morristown and Mrs. Joseph Irene Douglas, Kingsport; 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, several great-nieces and nephews and several cousins.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel, Big Stone Gap, Va.

Services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday with Pastor Claude Ray officiating.

Final disposition will be private.

Thomas B. Rice, 79, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Thomas B. Rice, 79, died at his home Thursday (March 31, 2005) after an extended illness.

Born in Medora, Ill., he had resided in Kingsport since 1950. He was a Navy veteran and served during World War II.

Mr. Rice received his Bachelors degree in Chemistry from the University of the South and his Masters degree from Oklahoma State University. He retired from Tennessee Eastman Company in 1986 after 36 years of service. Mr. Rice was an avid tennis and bridge player.

He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

His son, Robert Dale Rice, preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife, Alpha Rice, Kingsport; daughter, Donna Quillen and husband, Jeff, Kingsport; son, Thomas B. Rice Jr., and wife, Cheryl, Johnson City; five grandchildren, Alice Croft, Lisa Henley, Robert Rice, Rebecca Quillen, and Laura Quillen; two great-grandchildren, Olivia Croft and Dale Henley; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Rice request his body be donated to science.

The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Berndt Hall.

A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with Rev. Edward J. Mills, III officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 161 E. Ravine Rd., Kingsport, Tenn. 37660.

Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport, is assisting the Rice family.

Billy G. Sells, 72, Gray.
GRAY - Billy G. Sells, 72, of 200 Blue Friday Rd., passed away Thursday (March 31, 2005) at home after a short illness.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening. Arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Gray Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Ellen Fields Shelton, 86, Weber City, Va.
Services for Ellen Fields Shelton, 86, Weber City, Va., who passed away Wednesday (March 30, 2005), will be conducted at 8 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church of Weber City, Va., with Pastor Johnny Kendrick and Rev. Dean Smith officiating.

Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church and anytime at the residence.

Music will be provided by the church choir and Eric Hodges.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holston View Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to meet at the church at 10:15 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Terry Arceneaux, Jason Vance, Jonathan Price, Tim Hobbs, James Hobbs, Marty Black, and Michael Chapman.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Sutton, Ted Fraley, and Warner Brickey.

In memory of Ellen Shelton, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church building fund, P.O. Box 2155, Weber City, Va. 24290.

Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Slaughter, 81, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Dorothy Strickler Slaughter, 81, of 5270 Ft. Henry Drive, died Thursday (March 31, 2005) at the home of her daughter in Knoxville.

Mrs. Slaughter was a lifelong resident of Kingsport, retired from Pet Dairy after 36 years of service, and was a member of Fordtown Baptist Church. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and friend to many.

Preceding her in death were her parents, McDonald and Vessa Strickler; and three brothers, Lee, John Mack, and Bill Strickler.

Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Doug (Kay) Littrell, Knoxville, Tenn.; her son, Charles D. "Skip" Slaughter, Atlanta, Ga.; two grandsons, Chad Slaughter and Wesley Slaughter; two precious great-grandchildren, Charles and Seth Slaughter; and special nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 5 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Bryan Moore officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Tri-Cities Memory Gardens.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Memorials may be given to Fordtown Baptist Church, 444 Old Fordtown Road, Kingsport, Tenn., 37663.

Christopher Smith, 2, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Christopher Smith, 2, Kingsport, died Wednesday (March 30, 2005) at Indian Path Medical Center.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown.

Lona "Granny" Starnes, 79, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Lona "Granny" Starnes, 79, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday evening (March 30, 2005) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following an extended illness.

Granny was born in Scott County, Va., and had resided in Greene County and had lived in Kingsport since 1962. She loved to fish and work in her flowers.

She attended Horse Creek Freewill Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Carman and Violia Collins; her husband, Howard Starnes (1985); three sisters, two brothers; grandson, Kirk Martin; and daughter-in-law, Loretta Starnes.

Surviving are two daughters, Evelyn Martin and husband, Charles, Kingsport, Carolyn Miller and husband, Clifford, Rogersville; five sons, James Starnes and wife, Lois, Kingsport, Joe Starnes, Kingsport, David Starnes and wife, Kathy Charlene, Blountville, Robert Starnes, Kingsport, Calvin Starnes and wife, Tonia, Church Hill; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Tincie Wheat and Thelma Hicks, both of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Robert L. "Junior" Parker and Pastor Ron Ramsey officiating.

Burial will follow at Zion cemetery in Baileyton.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Sammy K. Stokes, 57, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Sammy K. Stokes, 57, passed away Thursday (March 31, 2005).

Arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by Oak Hill Funeral Home.

Mary Tilson 78, Greeneville.
GREENEVILLE - Mary Porter Tilson, 78, Van Hill Rd., went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 30, 2005 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Mrs. Tilson was born in Wise Co., Va., July 22, 1926 to the late Henry Hugh and Bessie Lawson Porter. Mrs. Tilson was retired from MECO, Greeneville. She was a member of Van Hill Methodist Church and attended Van Hill Free Will Baptist Church. Mrs. Tilson was known affectionately by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as "Mammaw Toot".

She was preceded in death by a son, Jackie Tilson in 1979; brothers, Charlie, Don, Henry "Hank" and Harold Porter; sisters, Jennie Bell Crawford and Agnes "Sis" Bernard.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Hobert Tilson, of the home; two sons, Jerry Tilson and wife, Barbara of Greeneville, J.D. Tilson and wife, Karen of Baileyton; three daughters, Charlotte "Charlie" Tipton and husband, Wayne of Rock Springs, Jan Pass and husband, Jerry of Greeneville, Betty "Peg" Lavinder and husband, Danny of Fall Branch; seven grandchildren, Amy Tilson Shelton and husband, Jason, Tracie Benko, Allison Tilson Weems and husband, Jason, Brian Benko and wife, Esther, Whitney Tipton Weems and husband Justin, Jamie Tilson, Jeremy Tilson and Nikki; two step-grandchildren, Jason Pass and wife, Gena, Jeremy Pass and wife, Tammy; six great-grandchildren, Jamy Shelton, Robert Shelton, Bailee Weems, McKinlee Weems, Walker Weems, Adrian Von Tilson due May 10; step-great-grandchild, Lindy Pass; sisters, Lorraine Roberson, Margaret Rogers and husband, Claud; sisters-in-law, Judy Porter and Evelyn Porter; brother-in-law, Bob Crawford; a special nephew she called "son", Larry Roberson; a special niece, Kathy Dykes; several other nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville or anytime at the residence of her son, Jerry Tilson on Van Hill Road.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Roger Dykes and Rev. A.C. Cobble officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Cemetery, Baileyton.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Brian Benko, Jamie Tilson, Jeremy Tilson, Jason Shelton, Justin Weems and Jason Weems.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Checks should be made to NMSS and sent to Judye Rhea, 409 Oriole Dr., Greeneville, Tenn. 37743.

George (G.W.) Wade Jr., 80, Kingsport.
Services for George W. (G.W.) Wade Jr., 80, Kingsport, who passed away into the Kingdom of Heaven Wednesday (March 30, 2005), will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at the Bloomingdale Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Byrd and Rev. Doug Harris officiating.

Calling hours are from 12 noon to 2 p.m. today at the church.

Graveside services and burial will follow the service in the East Lawn Memorial Park with full military honors conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post 3/265 of Kingsport.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Eric Conner, David Wade and Jason Wade, and his nephews, Kenny Wade, Bill McPherson and Doug Mohr.

The family would like to express special thanks to Doug Harris and Brookhaven Manor for the loving care they gave to George during his illness.

East Lawn Funeral Home is serving the Wade family.
