Ruth B. Javens, 87, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Ruth B. Javens, 87, died Wednesday morning at Indian Path Medical Center after an extended illness.

Born in Kingsport where she resided most of her life, she was 1937 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Preceding her in death were her son, Robert Bernard Javens; two brothers, Beryl W. Bernard and Claude T. Bernard; and a sister, Mary B. Mumford.

Surviving are one grandson, Scott Javens, Kingsport; one brother, George W. Bernard and wife, Vena and their son, Sam, all of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Dr. Victor Priebe officiating.

Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church, 100 W. Church Circle, Kingsport, Tenn. 37660.

Barbara Joan Lamberson, 75, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Barbara Joan Lamberson, 75, passed away Wednesday (March 29, 2005) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on July 26, 1929 in Kingsport and graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School. She later earned a real estate license through the Kingsport Adult Education. She never felt the need to leave her hometown, serving in business at Shaw Sheet Metal Works with her stepfather until its closing in 1978. Following her retirement from Shaw Sheet Metal, she worked in the Administration Office of Kingsport Housing Authority from 1984 to 1998. Prior to that she served by Mayor's appointment as a commissioner with that organization for seven years. Joan also served on Board of Directors as charter member of the Kingsport Sheltered Workshop, charter member of Kingsport Girls Club, board member of Kingsport Boys Club and was awarded the Man and Boy Award. As a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club she received the Woman of Achievement Award. She served as charter member and president of the Altrusa Club of Kingsport. She was speaker for Speakers Bureau of the Kingsport Council of Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. Under three separate Governors' appointments, she served several years as a member of the Tennessee Governor's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped and coordinator for the Sullivan County Committee on Employment of the Handicapped. In 1972 she was awarded the State of Tennessee's Department of Civil Defense Certificate of Commendation. In 1974 she was awarded Governor Ray Blanton's and the State of Tennessee Distinguished Volunteer Award. She was also a volunteer for Contact Concern. Joan was honored to be mentioned in Marquis' Who's Who in American Women, Community Leaders of America, Two-Thousand Women of Achievement and Personalities of the South.

She was a member of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church where she also served as a deacon.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lucille and stepfather, Sewell Williams; aunt and uncle, Virginia and Bill McIntosh; and a very special cousin, Julie McIntosh Strickler.

She is survived by very special cousins, Dr. Jerry McIntosh and wife, Vina, Tucker, Ga.; their two sons, Judson McIntosh, Lawrenceville, Ga., and Andrew McIntosh, Atlanta, Ga.; a cousin, Linda Mullenix, Johnson City; and many special friends.

Calling hours are from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Saturday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Oak Hill cemetery with Rev. Daniel S. Clark officiating.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, is serving the family of Joan Lamberson.

Dr. Royce L.B. Morris, Abingdon, Va.
ABINGDON, Va. - Dr. Royce L. B. Morris died on Tuesday (March 29, 2005) at the Welmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Following the completion of his studies at Ole Miss, he began his teaching career at Emory & Henry College. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Papyrology from Duke University in 1975. Over the course of 32 years, Dr. Morris served as an instructor of Classics, Assistant Professor of Classics, Associate Professor of Classics, Professor of Classics and Chairman of the Department of Languages. In 1986, the students of Emory & Henry College bestowed upon Dr. Morris the honor of the Excellence in Teaching Award.

Dr. Morris will be remembered for establishing an annual study in Roman Art and Archaeology in Rome, Italy. This class began in 1973 and is still an ongoing cultural and educational opportunity for students at Emory & Henry College. Many students have benefited from this unique opportunity.

A graveside committal and interment service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday at Knollkreg Memorial Park. Friends and family are invited to attend the service.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Abingdon United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Rowland officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service Saturday in the church fellowship hall or anytime at their home.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations can be made to the Royce Morris Travel Award-Rome Trip, c/o Emory & Henry College, P.O. Box 950, Emory, Va. 24327.

Emmitte Carl Osborne, 74, Blackwater, Va.
BLACKWATER, Va. - Emmitte Carl Osborne, 74, better known as David or Pap by his family and friends, was born May 11, 1930 and went home to be with his Savior Monday (March 28, 2005) at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va., after a brief illness.

He was saved in December of 1998 and attended the area Baptist churches. He was a loving and kind husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a friend to all.

He was an engineer in the U.S. Army and served his country well. He was a carpenter, farmer, truck driver, logger, and did saw mill work. He was a faithful and helping member of the Blackwater Volunteer Fire Department.

He loved music and singing. He loved playing his guitar and wrote many songs. Having friends close by always brought joy to his heart. He loved having molasses stir-offs to entertain his friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Georgia May Fisher Osborne; his parents, John and Osa Osborne; two brothers, Howard and Donald Osborne.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Bower Osborne; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Kate Osborne, Robert (Bob) and Kathryn Osborne, all of Blackwater; three sisters, Nell Johnson, Helen Robinette and husband Darrell of Blackwater, Lois Ann Adams and husband Ray of Duffield, Va.; one brother, Sherman Osborne and wife Marcella of Blackwater; one sister-in-law, Arneda Osborne of Blackwater; five grandchildren, Kevin and wife Heather, Randy, Becky, Deanna, and Phillip; two great-grandchildren, Rashelle and Ryan; five nephews, eight nieces, and numerous friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Robinette Funeral Home, Blackwater, Va.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with Evangelist Kenneth Neeley and Elder Frank Gilliam officiating. Jerry Honeycutt will also be speaking.

Military graveside services will be held in the Osborne Cemetery, Blackwater, Va., by the Charles DeWitt Byrd VFW Post #3382 Color Guard of Kingsport.

Lester Pleasant, 91, Dryden, Va.
DRYDEN, Va. - Lester Pleasant, 91, passed away Wednesday (March 30, 2005) at Lee Regional Medical Center, Pennington Gap, Va.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later.

Gilliam Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, Va., will be serving the Pleasant family.

Ellen Fields Shelton, 86, Weber City, Va.
WEBER CITY, Va. - Ellen Fields Shelton, 86, passed away Wednesday (March 30, 2005) at Holston Valley Medical Center after a short illness.

She was born in Scott County, Va., on Nov. 8, 1918 and was the daughter of the late Willard Melvin Fields and Belvie Hammond Fields. She was a homemaker and was a member of First Baptist Church, Weber City.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Gilmer Shelton; sisters, Gladys Turner, Lucy Carter and Reatha Sams; brother, Jess Fields.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-laws, Linda and Tom Arceneaux, Baton Rouge, La., Carol and Jim Price, Blountville, Cindy and Ben Weaver, Kingsport, Alison and Jeff Alley, Surgoinsville, Bobbie Duffy, Kingsport, Sibyl and Gerald Bowen, Fairborn, Ohio; sons and daughters-in-law, Willard S. and Doris Shelton, Hiltons, Va., Harold N. and Delma Shelton, San Diego, Calif.; sister, Emma Williams, West Carters Valley; 25 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church of Weber City, Va., and anytime at the residence.

Services will be conducted at the church at 8 p.m. with Pastor Johnny Kendrick and Rev. Dean Smith officiating.

Music will be provided by the church choir and Eric Hodges.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holston View Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to meet at the church at 10:15 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Terry Arceneaux, Jason Vance, Jonathan Price, Tim Hobbs, James Hobbs, Marty Black, and Michael Chapman.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Sutton, Ted Fraley, and Warner Brickey.

In memory of Ellen Shelton, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church building fund, P.O. Box 2155, Weber City, Va. 24290.

Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., is in charge of arrangements.

George (G.W.) Wade Jr., 80, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - George W. (G.W.) Wade Jr., 80, passed away into the Kingdom of Heaven Wednesday (March 30, 2005) in Brookhaven Manor.

George was born Feb. 28, 1925 in Ronda, W.Va., and moved to Kingsport as a young teenager from Pennington Gap, Va., and as a youngster he was a caddy at the local golf courses and became an accomplished golfer. He was employed by the Kingsport Press for 20 years and moved to Lake Orion, Mich., where he lived for 30 years and retired from General Motors Pontiac Division.

During World War II, Mr. Wade served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Mr. Wade was known throughout the area for his love of the Lord and his life was a testimony of spreading the gospel. He was a member of Bloomingdale Baptist Church for 50 years where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.

George was preceded in death by his parents, George W. and Nell (Forester) Wade.

George is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Nell (Tallman) Wade, of the home; his son, George David Wade of Kingsport; two daughters, Angela Conner and her husband Gary of Norcross, Ga., and Martha Brown of Lapeer, Mich.; his grandchildren, David Wade Jr., and Jason Wade, both of Kingsport, Eric Conner of Macon, Ga., Heather Brown and Holly Brown, both of Lapeer, Mich., April Starnes of Bluff City, and Amanda Wade of Kingsport; three great-grandchildren, Joshua Wade, Peyton Brown and Reagann Brown; his sisters, Annette Armstrong Moody of Farmington Hills, Mich., Nell Jean Reichner of Waterford, Mich., and Joyce Casey of Kingsport; his brothers, Kenneth F. Wade of Kingsport and David Bruce Wade of Maryville, Tenn. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.

Calling hours are from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the Bloomingdale Baptist Church.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Joe Byrd and Rev. Doug Harris officiating.

Graveside services and burial will follow the service in the East Lawn Memorial Park with full military honors conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post 3/265 of Kingsport.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Eric Conner, David Wade and Jason Wade, and his nephews, Kenny Wade, Bill McPherson and Doug Mohr.

The family would like to express special thanks to Doug Harris and Brookhaven Manor for the loving care they gave to George during his illness.

Lillie Pauline Blanken, 48, Inman, Va.
INMAN, Va. - Lillie Pauline Blanken, 48, passed away Monday (March 28, 2005) at Lonesome Pine Hospital, Big Stone Gap, Va.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Nora Margaret Williams; and brother, Darryl Wayne Williams.

Survivors include her husband, Tex Blanken, Inman, Va.; daughter, Sharon Blanken of Kentucky; father, James S. Williams, Inman, Va.; two brothers, Bobby Williams and Bruce Williams, both of Appalachia, Va.; two sisters, Carolyn Trimpin, Appalachia, Va., and Charlotte Kelly of Kentucky; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Roy A. Green Funeral Home, Appalachia, Va.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home chapel.

Lawrence L. Byington, 80, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Lawrence L. Byington, 80, went to be with the Lord Sunday evening (March 27, 2005) after a period of declining health.

He was born in Russell County, Va., and had resided in the Kingsport area for the past 53 years. Mr. Byington was a member of Lynn Garden Baptist Church where he served as deacon. He retired from Ball Brothers Furniture after 20 years of service.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Adventa Hospice and their staff and also to the nurses at Brookhaven.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Beatrice Byington; and a sister, Adeline Caudell.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Velma Cumbow Byington; a daughter, Deborah Lawson and husband, Kenny of Kingsport; one granddaughter, Audra Lawson of Kingsport; one grandson, Kenny Lawson, Jr., of Greeneville; a very loving special first cousin, Walter Porter; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Lynn Garden Baptist Church, 301 May Ave., Kingsport, Tenn. 37660.

Claude E. Carter, 61, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Claude "C.C." Carter, 61, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Sunday (March 27, 2005).

He was born in Osaka, Va., and raised in the Big Stone Gap area. Claude was a Christian of the Baptist faith and had a tremendous love for music.

He joined the Army in 1962, was stationed at Ft. Knox, Ky., and later sent via Hawaii and Japan to serve in Korea near the DMZ. He returned to serve in Ft. Lewis, Wash., and Fort Erwin, Calif., in the Mojave Desert. As a veteran of the Vietnam era, he earned the rank of Sgt. E-5 and received the Good Conduct Medal.

Mr. Carter retired from Quebecor World in 2001 after 35 years of service.

Preceding him in death were a sister, Faye E. Melton; his mother, Pearlie B. Carter; father, Worley E. Carter; and his wife, Bertha Graham Carter.

Surviving are one son, Eddie L. Carter, Big Stone Gap; three daughters, Cathy J. Neeley and husband, Lynn, Big Stone Gap, Jeanne L. Harwood and husband, Kevin, Sebastian, Fla., Patricia A. Meredith and husband, Charles, Big Stone Gap; five step-children, Noah McMurray, Ronald McMurray, Angie Sumner, Connie Lindley, Judy Duncan, all of Kingsport; 23 grandchildren; two brothers, James W. Carter, Dryden, Va., and Delmer Joe Carter, Orlando, Fla.; best friend, Huey Hass and Pauline, Duffield, Va.; and mother of his children, Glenna Varner, Appalachia, Va.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hermon United Methodist Church with Rev. Roy Smith and Rev. Kenneth Neeley officiating.

Music will be provided by Working Toward the Promise Singers.

Burial will follow at Hermon United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Fred Sanders, Richard Bowen, Bill Flanary, Jimmy Darnell, Anthony Qualls, Ronald McMurray, Noah McMurray, and Truman Tankersley.

KINGSPORT - Frank Charles, 91, was called home by the Lord to be with friends and loved ones at 9:24 a.m. Monday (March 28, 2005) following a period of declining health.

Services for Benny "Ben" L. Clark Sr., 57, Gate City, Va., who went to be with the Lord on Monday (March 28, 2005), will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the Gate City Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Smith officiating.

Music will be provided by the Smith Quartet.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and anytime at the residence of his daughter, Betty Clark Ratliff.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Clark Family Cemetery, Snowflake, Va. Family and friends will meet at 12:15 p.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Michael Clark, Charlie Clark, Rick Duncan, Jerry Crisp, John Crisp and Robert Clark Jr.

Honorary pallbearer will be Alvin Clark.
