GATE CITY, Va. - Jay Lloyd Vermillion, died Monday morning (Oct. 24, 2005) at his home, 801 Quillen Drive.
He was the only son of Sophia Elliott and Henry C. Vermillion, deceased. He grew up in Scott County, was educated at Shoemaker High School and Emory & Henry College where he was a member of Beta Lambda Zeta social fraternity.
He was a veteran of World War II and sustained injuries during the invasion at Normandy.
He was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities. He was a member of the Greer Memorial Sunday School class.
He retired from Tennessee Eastman after 44 years of service. He was a member of two professional societies while at Eastman, The American Chemical Society and The Society of Plastics Engineers, serving one term as president of the local chapter of The Society of Plastics Engineers.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sue; and daughters, Deborah and her husband Bob DeHaven, Leesburg, Va., and Melissa Vermillion, Greensboro, N.C. He was the devoted grandfather of Alexandra and Elliott DeHaven and Taylor and Miranda Cato. He is also survived by a sister, Lorraine V. Daugherty and her husband Bill.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10:15 a.m. today at Holston View Cemetery. Friends are asked to meet at the graveside at 10 a.m.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at First Broad Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jack Edwards officiating.
The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church and also anytime at the Vermillion home in Estil Heights.

KINGSPORT - Margaret Courtney Argabrite, devoted wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on Tuesday (Oct. 25, 2005) at her home at Preston Place Suites in Kingsport.
She was born on June 28, 1926 and grew up in Lewisburg, W.Va., before moving with her husband to Kingsport in 1951. She attended Greenbrier College for two years before graduating summa cum laude from the University of Kentucky in 1947.
Margaret was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for 54 years where she served as an elder and deacon. She was active in all areas of the church, especially the Presbyterian Women. She was well-known for her expertise in flower arranging and decorating, and she contributed those talents to many area organizations and events.
She was past-president of the Junior League of Kingsport, past chairman of the Holston Valley Hospital Gala Fundraiser, past-president of the Ridgefields Garden Club, and past-president of the Kingsport Book Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd McFarland Courtney and Anne Armstrong Courtney; and by her brother, Lloyd McFarland Courtney Jr.
Surviving are her husband of 56 years, William Wesley Argabrite Jr.; one son, William and his wife Patricia of Kingsport; two grandchildren, William Wesley Argabrite III, Atlanta, and Alyson Courtney Argabrite, Kingsport; three nieces, Mary Anne Watts, Austin, Tex., Bobbie Balacon, Campbell, Calif., and Katy Dalberg, San Jose, Calif.; and one nephew, Lloyd Courtney III, Salinas, Calif.
Burial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at New Providence Presbyterian Church in Surgoinsville.
Memorial services will follow at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at First Presbyterian Church of Kingsport with Rev. David A. Cagle and Rev. L. Craig Foster officiating.
Honorary pallbearers are Bill Armstrong, Newton Shearer, Robert Phlegar, Roger Schulken, Mike Witt, Charles Pitts and Wes Argabrite.

GYPSUM, Ohio - Betty Lou Barnette, 78, died Monday (Oct. 24, 2005) at her residence.
Betty was born in Appalachia, Va., on June 22, 1927, to John and Nannie (Vaughn) Rose. On Feb. 6, 1945, in Virginia, she married
Lawrence Barnette, who preceded her in death in 1970. Betty was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Port Clinton, Ohio.
Betty was a dedicated mother of seven children, grandmother of 15, and great-grandmother of 12. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed spending time visiting and vacationing with her many out-of-town relatives and friends.
Betty was a kind and gentle soul who touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed, by all those who had the privilege to know her. She leaves us to cherish her memories.
Survivors include his sons, Lawrence (Daisy) Barnette Jr. of Kentucky, Roger (Dar) Barnette of Port Clinton, and Jerry Barnette of Gypsum; daughters, Marcella (Johnny) Miller of Kentucky, Joetta (Leslie) Snyder of Port Clinton, and Lisa (Dave) Morelock of Tennessee; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Bruce Rose of Fremont; sisters, Frankie Smith of Dayton, Shirley (Sam) Hensley of Tennessee, and Mildred (Don) Hensley of Port Clinton; son-in-law, Dave Binder of Port Clinton; sister-in-law, Virginia Rose; many loving nieces and nephews; special friends, Lester McLaughlin, Mildred Holcomb, Nina Stinson and Opal Kuzma.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Wanda Binder; granddaughters, Shanda Trent and Shawn McLaughlin; brothers, Dee Rose and twins, Bob and Bill Rose.

CHURCH HILL - John Charles Barrett, 64, of 121 Davis Road, passed away Monday (Oct. 24, 2005) at his home following a sudden illness.
Mr. Barrett was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County and was of the Baptist faith. He was a retired carpenter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clint S. and Sarah Alice Armstrong Barrett; two brothers, Howard Barrett and Frank Barrett.

GATE CITY, Va. - Bonnie Fields Bellamy, 86, went to be with the Lord on Monday (Oct. 24, 2005) at Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.
Bonnie was born in Scott County, Va., where she had lived her entire life. She was a member of Kings Highway Temple.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Bellamy; her daughter and son-in-law, Mildred and Claude Bruner; parents, Claude and Virgie Fields; sisters, Roberta, Velma and Beatrice; brother, Buster; and granddaughters, Elizabeth and Robin.
Surviving are her daughter, June Bellamy of Gate City; sons, Jesse Bellamy, Gate City, Harrison Bellamy and wife Ola, Gate City, Bobby Bellamy and wife Pam, Kingsport, and Dale Bellamy and wife Tootsie, Gate City; sister, Helen Shelton, Gate City; brothers, Ben Fields and wife Iretas, Kingsport, Rev. Gordon Clifford Jr., 78, Thomasville, Ga.
THOMASVILLE, Ga. - Gordon Henry Clifford Jr., retired businessman and civic leader, died Sunday at Plantation Manor Assisted Living Home in Thomasville from Alzheimer's disease. He was 78 and had lived in Tallahassee since 1959.
He was on the original study committee to investigate and draft a proposed charter for consolidated government for Tallahassee and Leon County, which was defeated in 1971. He was a charter member and former president of the Leon County-Tallahassee Community Action Program Inc. He also was president of the Associated Charities of Leon County, forerunner of the United Way.
Born July 13, 1927 in St. Petersburg, Fla., he grew up in Kingsport and was a graduate of Castle Heights Military Academy, Lebanon, Tenn., and the Universit of Tennessee. He was in the U.S. Coast Guard and was a member of the 101st Division of the Army Air Infantry during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
After retiring as a sales representative for Xerox Corp., he worked for the state health and rehabilitation department.
He was a charter member of the Murat House Association, now part of The Tallahassee Museum of History and Natural Science, and served on the boards of LeMoyne Art Foundation and the Florida Heritage Foundation. Earlier, he belonged to the Tallahassee Kiwanis Club and was active in the Leon County Republican Party.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church where he served as junior warden. Services will be held there at 2 p.m. today.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Ring Clifford of Tallahassee; son, Wiley Howard Clifford and his wife, Susan of Spencer, Tenn.; two daughters, Elizabeth Clifford Simmons and her husband, Ramsay Simmons III of Bainbridge, Ga., and Mary Gordon Clifford Cunningham of Tallahassee; two granddaughters, Peggy Ladson Simmons and Chloe Elizabeth Clifford; grandson, Zachary Everett Cunningham.

Joe Edward Fleming, 74, Lewisburg, Tenn.
LEWISBURG, Tenn. - Joe Edward Fleming, 74, of Lewisburg, passed away Monday at his residence following a lengthy illness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, H.W. and Callie Irvin Fleming; a sister, Edith Wharton; and a brother, William "Bill" Fleming.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 54 years, Joan Cyree Fleming; daughter, Shelia (Henry) Stacy; two sons, Fred (Lori) Fleming and Joey (Hope) Fleming; a sister, Mildred (Claude) Lang; sisters-in-law, Faye Fleming, Freddie (James) Stewart, Carolyn (Wilson) Legg, Glenice (Bill) Lane, and Judy (Charles) Stanley; brother-in-law, Ray (Judy) Cyree. He is survived by eight grandchildren, Melody Barker, Adria (Lewis) Moore, Brian Fleming, Ashley (Alisha) Fleming, Ryan Fleming, Misty (Keith) Howell, Timothy Fleming, and Matthew Fleming; and five great-grandchildren, Levi and Jordan Moore, Makenzie, Makayla, and Bryant Fleming; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Joe was born in Huntsville, Ala., on June 21, 1931, and lived there during his childhood, prior to moving to Marshall County, Tenn. He attended the former Joe Bradley High School, and had been a resident of Lewisburg since 2002.
After serving his country in the U.S. Army, he was a minister in the Churches of Christ, until retirement. He was currently a member of the Hickory Heights Church of Christ in Lewisburg. Joe's favorite pastime was racing stock cars and watching his grandchildren play sports.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to NHC-Homecare of Lewisburg for their special care and visits during his illness.
The family will receive friends at Bills McGaugh Funeral Home, Lewisburg, Tenn., from 4 to 8 p.m. today for visitation.

Born in Flag Pond, Tenn., on Oct. 22, 1917, he was the son of the late Henry Floyd and Nancy May Barnes Guinn. He had resided in this area most of his life.
Mr. Guinn was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Corp. He was a retired manager for J&M Service Center.
