Jessie Lee Grills, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Jessie Lee Grills, daughter of the late Ernest and Ethel Shipley Moody, born May 29, 1913, passed away Monday (Oct. 24, 2005) at Wexford House.

She was a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church, Anna Mitchell's Sunday School class, the United Methodist Women's Circle #2, and the Senior's Club of the church. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron in 1964, and also a member of the VFW Auxiliary #3382 of Kingsport.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Grills was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Moody and Kyle H. Moody; and a nephew, Ernest Lee Moody.

Surviving are her husband of 68 years, Robert D. Grills; one son, Robert Ernest Grills and wife Kathy; one granddaughter, Sherri Grills Walton and husband Josh; three great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Garrett, and Grayson Walton; two step-granddaughters, Jennifer Thompson and Michelle Thompson and husband Alex; one step-great-granddaughter, Abbie Thompson; one sister, Erma Kern; two special nieces, Sue Peterson and husband Tom and Ruth Ann Correll and husband Frank; three special nephews, Joe Moody, Dan Moody and Sam Moody; sisters-in-law, Elva Grills, Wanda Grills, Helen Grills and Betty Moody; special friends, Margaret and Lynda Kennedy; and several grand-nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Oak Hill Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel at 7 p.m. with Rev. George Winegar officiating.

Entombment services will be conducted in Oak Hill I Mausoleum of Oak Hill Memorial Park at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Moody, Dan Moody, Sam Moody, Tim Grills, Hugh Grills, Eddie Grills and Tony Grills.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jessie Grills Memorial, c/o Emory United Methodist Church, 425 Emory Church Rd., Kingsport, TN 37664.

The staff of Oak Hill Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Mrs. Jessie Grills.

Lissie Jean Hartgrove, 65, Gate City, Va.
Services for Lissie Jean (Frazier) Hartgrove, 65, of Rt. 3, Yuma community, Gate City, Va., who went to be with the Lord early Sunday morning, will be conducted at 10 a.m. today from the chapel of Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., with Rev. Paul Blessing and Brother Steven Templeton officiating.

Music will be provided by The Potters and Wayne Bledsoe.

Interment will follow in Holston View cemetery and nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Holston United Methodist Home for Children, 404 Holston Drive, Greeneville, TN 37743 or to the charity of one's choice.

Anna Mae Lawson, 85, Mount Carmel.
MOUNT CARMEL - Anna Mae Russell Lawson, 85, formerly of Mount Carmel, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning (Oct. 23, 2005) following an extended illness.

She was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County. Anna Mae was a member of Cobbs Chapel Baptist Church in Clinch.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd H. Lawson; two grandsons, Joel Slemp and Shone Lawson; her parents, Fate and Nora Lawson Russell; along with several brothers and sisters.

Anne Mae is survived by her two daughters, Janyce Cusack of Dallas, Tex., and Joyce Flannary of Kingsport; a son, Dude Lawson of Mount Carmel; seven grandchildren, Michael Cusack, Robyn Nicholson, Gena Steele, Ritchie Harris, Christopher Flannary, Gary Stephen Lawson and Heather Lawson; 11 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Beulah, Marilyn, Lena and Sue; two brothers, Roy and Arnold; along with a host of nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home of Church Hill or friends may call anytime at the daughter's residence, Joyce Flannary, 813 Morison Ave., Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Mitch Russell, youth director at First Freewill Baptist Church of Church Hill, officiating.

Carter-Trent Funeral Home of Church Hill is serving the family of Anna Mae Lawson.

Tommy Morelock, 50, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - Tommy Morelock, 50, 140 Donnie Morelock Rd., passed away peacefully at his home on Monday (Oct. 24, 2005).

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Fall Branch Chapel of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes.

Mitchell Jessie Qualls, 84, Duffield, Va.
DUFFIELD, Va. - Military graveside services for Mitchell Qualls, 84, who entered into rest Saturday (Oct. 22, 2005), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at the V.A. Mountain Home in Johnson City, by the American Legion Hammond Post #3 and Gate City Post #265.

Family will be meeting at the cemetery for services.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Gate City Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Teddy Lynn Peregoy Jr., 29, Gray.
GRAY - Teddy Lynn Peregoy Jr., 29, 784 Lakeridge St., died unexpectedly at home on Thursday (Oct. 20, 2005).

He was the biological son of Teddy Lynn Peregoy Sr. and adopted son of Lena Mae Barnes Peregoy and the late Brown L. Peregoy Jr. He was a 1995 graduate of Daniel Boone High School and had worked construction.

In addition to his adopted father, he was also preceded in death by his infant sisters, Michelle Elizabeth Peregoy and Elizabeth Marie Peregoy.

In addition to his adopted mother, he is survived by three brothers, Jason Peregoy of Tiptonville, Tenn., Christopher Peregoy of Johnson City, and Tim (Dawna) Peregoy of Jonesborough; two sisters, Sara Louise (Ricky) Gardner of Gray, and Karen Fay (Kenny) Davis of Watauga; special cousins, Melissa Reed, Susan Stipes, Joey Castle, Tonya Davis, Timbo and Brandon Peregoy, Daniel Bolinger, and Daniel and Anthony Gardner; special friends, Carla, Travis, and Willie Peters; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Gray Funeral Home.

Services will follow at 7 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Robert Reed and Tim Cross officiating.

Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Washington County Memory Gardens with Dr. Gene Lasley officiating. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Gray Funeral Home (for T. Peregoy), P.O. Box 8132, Gray, Tenn. 37615 to help the family with funeral expenses.

Virginia Sue Rogers, 78, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Virginia Sue Rogers, 78, of Kingsport, died on Saturday (Oct. 22, 2005) at Hillside Manor Nursing Home.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Oak Hill Memorial Park, Funerals, and Cremations.

The staff of Oak Hill is honored to serve the family of Ms. Virginia Rogers.

Helen Sergent, 96, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - Helen Sergent, 96, formerly of Gate City and a member of Gate City United Methodist Church, passed away Saturday (Oct. 22, 2005) at Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.

Helen was born on June 13, 1909 in Washington, D.C., the daughter of the late, J. Frank and Callie Pridemore Sergent. The family was located in Washington while Mr. Sergent was serving as a U.S. Commissioner.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Frank Sergent and Charles Sergent; two nieces, Nancy and Vickie; a nephew, Charles Sergent.

Miss Sergent graduated from Shoemaker High School. She attended Pikeville College, Radford State Teachers' College, East Tennessee State University, University of Virginia Extension and Cornell University. A teacher, she began her career at Daniel Boone in 1931 teaching the first and second grades. She then taught first and third grades at Shoemaker Elementary. She was the director of the Gate City NYA Center, worked in the Abingdon, Va., NYA office, was employed at Holston Ordinance and worked in the OPA office in Gate City. After working at the Gate City Shirt Factory she returned to teaching at Gate City High School in the Home Economics Department.

She taught first grade at Weber City Elementary and Home Economics at Rye Cove High School before joining the staff of the Scott County Vocational Center in July of 1969. She retired from that post in 1973 with 36 years of teaching in the Scott County School System.

Miss Sergent was an accomplished chef who loved to delight her friends and guests with her elegant and delicious creations. She took a keen interest in church and community affairs and stayed in close touch with the activities of her friends. A poet, she always had an appropriate verse to share for special occasions.

She continued to share her love for her church and community with active service and gracious hospitality from her retirement until she moved into a Johnson City retirement community in 1991. For the last 10 very happy years of her life she resided among her many friends at the Asbury Center at Steadman Hills in Kingsport.

She is survived by her nieces, Cathy Hirth, Christine Edwards, Lee Anna (Harold) Martin and Mary Hodges, all of Arizona, and Lynn (Gene) Parson of Georgia. She is also survived by two nephews, Bruce (Joan) Sergent of Michigan and Jimmy (Suzanne) Sergent of California; a host of friends, including special friend, B.J. Broadwater, and many loving cousins including Ruth Bachman and Susan Cole of Kingsport and Margaret (Ben) Scott, Weber City, Va.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Gate City Funeral Home.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Gate City United Methodist Church, Gate City, Va., with Rev. Dale Wyrick and Rev. Steve Brown officiating.

Music will be provided by David Taylor and Jim Belt Baker.

Interment will follow the service at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va.

Benny Reed, Arthur Scott, Jim Addington, Pat Quillen, David Taylor, Allen Dougherty, Judge John Kilgore, Carl Scott, and Hugh Scott will serve as pallbearers.

B.J. Broadwater, Tucker Coleman, Charles Hartgrove, Roderick St. Martin, Bill Draper, Lee Baker, Stan Bateman, Sam Coleman will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Gate City United Methodist Church, P.O Box 246, Gate City, VA 24251.

Anthony K. Shaffer, 26, Kingsport.
Services for Anthony Keith Shaffer, 26, Kingsport, who went to sleep in the arms of Jesus Saturday (Oct. 22, 2005), will be held at 8 p.m. today in the chapel of East Lawn Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Cole officiating.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and anytime at his home.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the East Lawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be friends and family.

Special thanks to all of Anthony's caregivers and friends at Brookhaven Manor.

Jimmy Wayne Smith, 68, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Jimmy Wayne Smith, 68, of Kingsport, passed away on Sunday (Oct. 23, 2005) at the Wexford House due to complications from a stroke.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Coeburn High School and attended both Purdue University and E.T.S.U. He was a retired multi-line insurance adjuster.

Jimmy was an active member of Heritage First Church of God and enjoyed participating in the Men's Brotherhood Prayer Breakfast.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Daphne Vanover Smith; one sister, Mona Smith; one brother, Billy Smith; and his beloved poodle, Eli.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Rosemary T. Smith, of the home; two daughters, Tramera K. Duke and husband, Mike, and Michelle J. Gibson and husband, Sam, all of Kingsport; one brother, R.B. Smith and wife, Loretta, of Carrollton, Ga.; two grandsons; one grand-dog; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Smith's wishes were to be cremated.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Heritage First Church of God with a memorial service at 5 p.m. with Pastor Steve Tilley officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Heritage First Church of God, 470 Rock Springs Road, Kingsport, TN 37664.

The family would like to send special thanks to the loving and caring staff of the Wexford House.

Peggy Ann Smith, 51, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Peggy Ann Harkleroad Smith, 51, of Kingsport, died on Saturday (Oct. 22, 2005) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Ms. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Marie Harkleroad; and a brother, Gary Harkleroad.

Surviving are two sons, Joey Edward Cunningham and wife Holly of Church Hill, and Randall Eugene Cunningham of Johnson City; two grandchildren, Austin Cunningham and Ericka Jade Cunningham; one sister, Sandy Harkleroad of Kingsport; a special friend, Kathy Murr of Jonesborough; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill Funeral Home or anytime until 9 p.m. at the home of her sister, Sandy Harkleroad.

Services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel at 1 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor Mike Stout officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted in Oak Hill Memorial Park immediately following funeral services.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Jay Lloyd Vermillion, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - Jay Lloyd Vermillion, Gate City, Va., died Monday morning (Oct. 24, 2005) at his home, 801 Quillen Drive.

He was the only son of Sophia Elliott and Henry C. Vermillion, deceased. He grew up in Scott County, was educated at Shoemaker High School and Emory & Henry College where he was a member of Beta Lambda Zeta social fraternity.

He was a veteran of World War II and sustained injuries during the invasion at Normandy.

He was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities. He was a member of the Greer Memorial Sunday School class.

He retired from Tennessee Eastman after 44 years of service. He was a member of two professional societies while at Eastman, The American Chemical Society and The Society of Plastics Engineers, serving one term as president of the local chapter of The Society of Plastics Engineers.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sue; and daughters, Deborah and her husband Bob DeHaven, Leesburg, Va., and Melissa Cato, Greensboro, N.C. He was the devoted grandfather of Alexandra and Elliott DeHaven and Taylor and Miranda Cato. He is also survived by a sister, Lorraine V. Daugherty and her husband Bill.

Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport, is serving the Vermillion family.
