Rev. Wilson Newman, 76, Fries, Va.
FRIES, Va. - Rev. Wilson Newman, 76, of Fries, Va., passed away Friday evening at North Carolina Baptist Hospital.

Arrangements are incomplete at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home, Galax, Va.

Lorna Mildred Parris, 89, Elizabethton.
ELIZABETHTON - Lorna Mildred Parris, 89, 161 Judge Ben Allen Road, died Friday (Dec. 9, 2005) at Ivy Hall Nursing Home.

A native of Sullivan County, she was a daughter of the late James Blaine and Bitha Elizabeth Taylor Dykes. She had lived in Elizabethton since 1992. She was a homemaker.

Until her illness, she was an active member of the Mayfair United Methodist Church, Kingsport, active in the Young at Heart Club of the church and a former Girl Scout leader. She was a former member of the Kingsport Square Dance Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Andrew Parris in 1990; a son, Jeffery Stephen Parris; three brothers and one sister.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Claudette and Ken Howerton, Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry Ronald and Laurie Parris, Oklawaha, Fla.; five grandchildren, Gina Fritts, Elizabethton, Brady Howerton, Rutledge, Andy Parris, Atlanta, Jenny Parris and Jeff Parris, both of South Carolina; five great-grandchildren, Josh Fair, Cody Fair, Seth Howerton, Kara Howerton and Tori Parris; two step-grandchildren, Teresa Hambrick and Bobby Anderson; five step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Leonard "Pete" Dykes, Kingsport; a sister, Mary Wilson, Leesburg, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Memorial Funeral Chapel, Elizabethton. Friends may also call at the residence of her daughter, 161 Judge Ben Allen Road, at anytime.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Preston Sartelle officiating. The eulogy will be given by her granddaughter, Gina Fritts.

Music will be provided by Becky Hale, soloist, and David Arney, organist.

Graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the East Lawn Memorial Park, Kingsport.

Active pallbearers will Josh Fair, Cody Fair, Phil Fritts, Seth Howerton, Brady Howerton, Andy Parris and Bobby Anderson.

Honorary pallbearers will be staff and employees of Ivy Hall Nursing Home, former owners, staff and employees of Stockton Residential Home, members of the Young At Heart Club and Mayfair United Methodist Church.

Pallbearers, family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Monday for the interment services.

To those who prefer, memorials may be made in memory of Mrs. Parris to the Alzheimer's Association, 207 N. Boone St., Suite 1500, Johnson City, Tenn. 37604.

Joyce Ann Puckett, 51, Kingsport.
Services for Joyce Ann Puckett, 51, of Kingsport, who passed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday (Dec. 7, 2005), will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in the chapel of Oak Hill Funeral Home with Rev. Eddie Whitley officiating.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Josh Puckett, Jeff Puckett, David Winstead, Bobby Taylor, Sammy Williams, and Andrew Perry.

The staff of Oak Hill is honored to serve the family of Mrs. Joyce Ann Puckett.

Isabelle Goins Quillen, 89, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - Isabelle Goins Quillen, 89, of Rogersville, went to be with the Lord Friday evening (Dec. 9, 2005) at Wellmont Hawkins County Hospital following an extended illness.

She was of the Baptist faith. She was a loving wife and mother and will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Quillen; two sons, Harold Quillen and Lee Quillen; parents, George and Arlena Goins; five sisters and four brothers.

Surviving are her children, SFC Retired, Rex Quillen and wife Carol of Ft. Bragg, N.C., Worley Quillen and wife Glenda, Hugh Quillen, Margaret Bowen, all of Rogersville, and Diane Brock and husband Walter of Jefferson City; eight granddaughters and two grandsons; four great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons; sister, Christine Hurd and husband Kyle of Hancock County; several nieces and nephews; two special friends, Bonnie Frost Light and Molly Albright.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville.

Services will follow at 8 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Wayne Ferrell and Rev. Ray Mullins officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Highland Cemetery.

Velma Myrtle Reed, 79, Church Hill
Services for Velma Myrtle Reed, 79, of 300 Park Ave., Church Hill, who passed away Friday (Dec. 9, 2005), will be conducted Monday at 7 p.m. in the Johnson Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Bryan Moore and the Rev. Gary Gerhardt officiating.

Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and anytime at the residence.

Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Elm Springs Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Spencer Moody, Ray Moody Jr., Harvey Moody, Jerry Moody, Elmer Lewis and J.C. Renfro.

Honorary bearers will be Adult Men #1 Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church.

Conner Rowland, 85, Church Hill.
CHURCH HILL - Conner Rowland, 85, of Church Hill, passed away Saturday afternoon (December. 10, 2005) at his residence.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Carter-Trent Funeral Home of Church Hill.

Charlie Wayne Sluss, 82, Coeburn, Va.
COEBURN, Va. - Charlie Wayne Sluss, 82, died Friday (Dec. 9, 2005) at Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Va.

He was a retired coal miner and a lifelong resident of Coeburn.

He was the son of the late Charles and Alice Kate Sluss. Also preceded in death by a son, James Franklin Sluss; and a brother, Joe Bill Sluss.

Survivors include his wife, Julia Hall Sluss; four daughters, Gretta Reece and Doris Salyer, Coeburn, Jean Creed, Taylor, Mich., Christeen Horsley, Rocky Mount, Va.; five sons, C.W. Sluss, Norton, Arthur Sluss and Danny Sluss, Coeburn, Ralph Sluss, St. Paul, and Johnny Sluss, Rocky Mount, Va.; five sisters, Dixie Johnson, Woodbridge, Va., Polly Proulex, Bernice Wright and Sue Ella Luther, all of Coeburn, and Anne Coe, Sandusky, Ohio; two brothers, Jack Sluss and Powell Sluss, both of Coeburn; one step-daughter, Diane Sylvia, Brunswick, Ga.; 21 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Estes Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Martin and Rev. Danny Darnell officiating.

Burial will follow in Greenwood Acres Memorial Gardens in Coeburn.

The body remain at Estes Funeral Home where the family will receive friends after 6 p.m. today and Monday.

Arlene Smith, 79, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Arlene Smith, 79, of 241 Virginia Street, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Saturday (Dec. 10, 2005).

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Oak Hill Funeral Home.

Larry Wayne Smith, 50, Kingsport.
Graveside services for Larry Wayne Smith, 50, of Old Beason Well Road, Kingsport, who went to be with the Lord Thursday morning (Dec. 8, 2005), will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Holston View cemetery in Weber City, Va., with family and friends serving as pallbearers. It is requested that those wishing to attend the graveside services meet at the funeral home by 1:15 p.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.

Walter Lee Carter, 89, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - Walter Lee Carter, 89, passed away Tuesday (Dec. 13, 2005) at the Brian Center of Weber City.

He was born April 5, 1916 in Gate City, and was the son of Joseph W. Carter Sr., and Eva Quillen Carter.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mattie Flanary; and brothers, William (Bill) Carter and Joseph Worley Carter Jr.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Gate City. He retired from Eastman Kodak after 38 years of service.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Carrie McClellan Carter, Gate City, Va.; one daughter, Jeanne Vermillion and husband, Eddie of Gate City, Va.; grandson, Brian Vermillion and wife, Julia, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; granddaughter, Beth Williams and husband, Kevin, Kingsport; four great-grandsons, Will and Jonathan Vermillion, Grant and Garrison Williams; three sisters, Mary Salling, Weber City, Va., Myrtle Cox, Gate City, Va., and Ina Williams and husband, George, Kingsport; one brother, Edwin Carter and wife, Ingrid, Weber City, Va.; two sisters-in-laws, Hazel Carter, Gate City, Va., and JoAnn Carter, Kingsport; also several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Gate City Funeral Home and anytime at the home of his daughter on Red Hill Road.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel with Dr. J. Edward Clevinger and Rev. Kelly Carter officiating.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va. The family will meet at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers are Brian Vermillion, Kevin Williams, O.L. Horne, Jerry (Babe) Bellamy, Roy Carter and Herman Spivey.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 506, Gate City, Va. 24251.

The family would like to thank the nurses, therapists, and Barbara Davis at Amedisys Home Health, Dr. Steve Adkins and the Brian Center.

Jessie Coates, 92, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Jessie Roller Coates, 92, passed away Wednesday (Dec. 14, 2005) after a brief illness.

Mrs. Coates had lived in Sullivan County her entire life. She had a special love for flowers and gardening.

She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Her husband, C.A. "Pete" Coates; and daughter, Jessie Joan Coates preceded her in death.

Surviving are two sons and their families, C.A. "Pete" Coates Jr. and Paul Coates; and one sister, Jean Perry and her family.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.

Services will be held at 8 p.m. today at the funeral home with Pastor Don McCann and Rev. Alan L. Gorrell officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at East Lawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be J.D. Bacon, Jerry Bacon, Ray Helton, Rusty Helton, Dwight Hunigan, Ron Kilgore, Darrell Perry, and Keith Perry.

Joe Cox, 40, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Joseph M. Cox, 40, Kingsport, died Tuesday (Dec. 13, 2005) after injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County. Joe had worked for Holston Glass and Brooks Circle Exxon.

Joe was a member of Gravely Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Milbren and Patsy Cox; and nephews, Roger Haga II and David Lee Cox.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Cox of the home; stepson, Robert Palmer and wife Donna, White Pine, Tenn.; one step-grandson, Thomas Alexander Palmer; one step-granddaughter, Dakota Rayne Palmer; two sisters, Patricia Ann Mashburn, Kingsport, Susan Gail Thompson and husband Calvin, Cleveland, Tenn.; four brothers, Dennis Lee Cox, Phoenix, Ariz., Thomas Lee Cox and wife Teresa, Erwin, Milbrun Edward Cox and wife Joann, Kingsport, Mark Richard Cox and wife Patricia, Gray; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport, or any time at the home of a sister at 1825 Sweetbriar Road, Kingsport.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Memorial Park with Pastor David Salley officiating. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery at 1:45 p.m. for services.

Honorary pallbearers will be family members and friends.

Fred Junior Davis, 71, Gate City, Va.
Committal services for Fred Junior Davis, 71, of Sweet Gum Road, Gate City, Va., who went to be with the Lord late Sunday evening, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at the Davis Family Cemetery. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:55 a.m. today.

Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., is serving the Davis family.

Joyce Faye Easterling, 64, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - Joyce Faye Easterling, 64, died Tuesday (Dec. 13, 2005) at Holston Valley Medical Center due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Mrs. Easterling was a member of Hickory Cove Missionary Baptist Church and was a bookkeeper with the Rogersville Middle School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Easterling; son, Scott B. Easterling; father, Avery Lipe.

Surviving are her son, Troy W. Easterling and wife, Tammy of Rogersville; mother, Eileen Lipe of Rogersville; grandson, Kevin Easterling.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Keith Bunch officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Highland Cemetery.
