Lois Cole Stapleton, 76, East Stone Gap, Va.
EAST STONE GAP, Va. - Lois Cole Stapleton, 76, passed away Monday (Dec. 12, 2005) at Holston Valley Hospital.

A lifelong resident of East Stone Gap, she was active in the local AARP chapter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Stapleton; two brothers, Scotty and Walter Cole; and one sister, Nell Harris.

She is survived by two sons, Darrell Stapleton and wife Doris, Big Stone Gap, Va., Bill Stapleton and wife Debra, South Rockwood, Mich.; four grandchildren, Jennifer Hamilton, Brad Stapleton, Billy Stallard, and Aaron Stallard; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Anna Ruth Barker and Brenda Osborne; brothers, Doyle Cole, Jack Cole, and Gale Cole.

The family will receive friends at the East Stone Gap United Methodist Church from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Ken Sprinkle and Rev. Lonnie Brooks officiating.

Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery, East Stone Gap.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 900 East Hill Avenue, Suite 240, Knoxville, TN, 37915, in memory of Lois Stapleton.

Janice Sturgill, 49, Weber City, Va.
WEBER CITY, Va. - Services for Janice Faye Sturgill, 49, who entered into rest Monday (Dec. 12, 2005), will be conducted at 12 noon today in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the Gate City Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Adkins officiating.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 noon today at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Robin Lane, Weber City, Va.

Burial will follow the service at the Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tenn.

Brandon Bledsoe, Brandon Sexton, Bruce Sexton, Scottie Williams, Jamie Hackney and Gary Hackney will serve as pallbearers.

Paula Varner, 74, Church Hill.
CHURCH HILL - Paula Ann Varner, 74, of Church Hill, went to be with the Lord Tuesday (Dec. 13, 2005) at Indian Path Medical Center.

She was an honor roll student, a majorette for three years, and a graduate of Woodward High School in Toledo, Ohio. Paula was choir director at Christ Lutheran Church in Toledo and was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Surviving are her husband, Ray Varner, Church Hill; four sons, Raymond Varner and wife, Rachel, Richmond, Va., Larry Varner and wife, Kathy, Hiltons, Va., Jim Varner, Kingsport, Jerry Varner and wife, Holly, Syracuse, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Florine Corisis, Sylvania, Ohio; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Russell and Starr Varner, Erie, Mich., and Ronald and Cynthia Varner, Toledo, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with Rev. Jim Mullins officiating.

Gale Henderson Alvis, 82, Kingsport.
Military graveside service for Gale Henderson Alvis, 82, of Kingsport, who went to be with the Lord on Tuesday (Jan. 3, 2006), will be held at 12 noon today at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Hammond Post #3 and Gate City Post #265.

Those wishing to attend the graveside service should meet at the cemetery by 11:45 a.m.

The staff of Oak Hill Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Gale Henderson Alvis.

Virginia Ellen "El" Bowen, 73, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Virginia Ellen "El" Bowen, 73, of Pattonsville, Va., went to be with the Lord with her family by her side on Tuesday (Jan. 3, 2006).

Born in Lee County, Va., she was of the Baptist faith. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roby Bill Bowen; her parents; one son, Jerry Lynn Bowen; one sister, Ella Mae Lawson; and one grandson, Ernie Shane Mullins.

Surviving are her daughters, Barbara Mullins and special friend Jimmy of Pattonsville, Va., Jane White of Florence, S.C., Kitty Dunlap and husband Brad of Church Hill; one son, Monty Bowen of Pattonsville, Va.; several grandchildren; a great-grandson, Tyler, and an unborn great-grandson; two brothers, Willie Anderson of Greeneville, and Ivan Lawson of Kingsport; and a beloved companion, Tiger (her dog).

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Oak Hill Funeral Home. The family will also receive friends at the home of Virginia Ellen Bowen.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Gary Hood officiating.

Committal services will follow in the Oak Hill Mausoleum.

H. Taylor Bowers, 87, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - H. Taylor Bowers, 87, formerly of Carlowville, Ala., went to be with the Lord at 5 a.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 4, 2006) at Holston Valley Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Shell Creek, Tenn. Mr. Bowers served as a pilot in the Army Air Corp in World War II and the Air Force in Korea.

After working for Proctor and Gamble he was called to be a minister of education and church administration serving in the First Baptist Church, Tampa, Fla., Central Baptist Church, Miami, Fla., Metropolitan Baptist Church, Washington, D.C., and Huffman Baptist Church, Birmingham, Ala. He retired in 1984 to Carlowville, Ala., where he served as pastor of Carlowville Baptist Church until 2004. Mr. Bowers moved to Kingsport to be closer to his family in July 2004.

Mr. Bowers was a member of First Baptist Church in Kingsport.

His parents, John and Macie Bowers; daughter, Linda Carolyn Bowers; and sister, Mary Womack preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife, Melba Bowers, Kingsport; son, David Bowers and wife Lynne, Kingsport; three grandchildren, Laurie Assid and husband Raymond, D. Taylor Bowers, and Karen McKeehan and husband James; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Chris Bowers and wife Pat, Elizabethton.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Dr. Marvin Cameron. Family and friends will meet at 9:45 a.m. Friday at the cemetery.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Marvin Cameron officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Carlowville Baptist Church, c/o Hugh Strickland, 1111 County Road 417, Minter, Ala. 36761 or First Baptist Church, 200 West Church Circle, Kingsport, Tenn. 37660.

Preston H. Canter, 90, Kingsport.
Graveside services for Preston H. Canter, 90, Kingsport, who went home to be with the Lord at 5 p.m. Monday (Jan. 2, 2006), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in East Lawn Memorial Park's Garden of the Good Shepherd.

Those attending the graveside services are asked to assemble at the graveside by 10:50 a.m. today.

Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

East Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Collins, 95, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Mary Elsie Collins, 95, passed away on Tuesday (Jan. 3, 2006) at Indian Path Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley T. Collins; and daughters, Barbara Jean Collins and Helen Williams.

Surviving are her daughter, Irene Phillips; two sons, Junior "Ray" Collins, Richmond, Ind., and James F. "Pete" Collins, Phoenix, Ariz.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Oak Hill Funeral Home.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Oscar Ervin officiating.

Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Rick Phillips, Dennis Barrett, Freddie Williams, Tom Phillips, Austin Phillips and Phillip Collins.

Carl E. Duncan Sr., 73, Floyds Knobs, Ind.
FLOYDS KNOBS, Ind. - Carl E. Duncan Sr., 73, died Tuesday (Jan. 3, 2006) at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany.

Mr. Duncan was a native of Kingsport and retired in 1994 from the R.C./Canada Dry Company in Louisville, Ky. He was a disabled Army veteran of the Korean War, a life-member of VFW Floyd County Post #3281, Disabled American Veterans and the Fraternal Order of Police in Floyd County, Ind.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Faye Holcomb Duncan; sons, Carl E. Duncan Jr., New Albany, Ind., and Walter Duncan, Louisville, Ky.; daughter, Phyllis Duncan, Floyds Knobs, Ind.; five grandchildren, Mindy, Carl III, Christopher, Lisa and Brent; three great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Courtney and Allison; brothers, Irvin Duncan of Virginia and Leon Duncan, Kingsport; sister, Bobbie Lane, Kingsport.

Visitation will be after 8 a.m. today at Kraft Funeral Service, New Albany, Ind.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Kraft Springs St. Funeral Chapel.

Interment with military honors at Chapel Hill cemetery in Floyds Knobs, Ind.

Robert Lee Falin, 85, Alcoa, Tenn.
ALCOA, Tenn. - Robert Lee Falin, 85, of Alcoa, passed away Wednesday (Jan. 4, 2006) at his home.

He was a medic in World War II and a Purple Heart recipient. He was a 50-year member of the Masons and a 50-year member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Matlock Falin; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Brenda Falin of Bristol, Tenn., Gary and Marilyn Falin of Alcoa; grandson and wife, Scott and Amy Falin of Kingsport; great- grandsons, Soloman and Connor Falin of Kingsport, and Zack Elliott and Jole Payne; brother and sister-in-law, Claude and Doris Falin of Gate City, Va.; sister-in-law, Anna Ruth Falin; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. today at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home, Maryville, Tenn.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ron Sunderland officiating.

Family and friends will meet at 11 a.m. Friday at Holston View cemetery in Weber City, Va., for the interment service with Rev. Eckel Herron officiating.

Jennifer Ferguson, 50, Kingsport.
A memorial service for Jennifer Knowles Ferguson, 50, who went home to be with the Lord on Monday evening (Jan. 2, 2006), will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the chapel of Carter-Trent Funeral Home of Church Hill with Pastor Lonnie Wooten officiating.

Calling hours are from 5 to 7 today at the funeral home or anytime at the residence of the mother, 420 S. Central, Church Hill.

A very special thank you goes out to the Bristol Hospice House for their care and attention given to Jennifer Knowles Ferguson and her family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bristol Hospice House, 980 Steele Road, Bristol, Tenn.

Bengmon W. "Ben" Fields, 84, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Bengmon W. "Ben" Fields, 84, of Kingsport, died Wednesday (Jan. 4, 2006) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced at a later date.

Gene Frances Fleenor, 81, Church Hill.
CHURCH HILL - Ms. Gene F. Fleenor, 81, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Wednesday (Jan. 4, 2006) in the Church Hill Life Care Center after a period of declining health.

Arrangements are incomplete. East Lawn Funeral Home is serving the Fleenor family.

James R. Gudger, 73, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - James R. Gudger, 73, passed away Tuesday evening (Jan. 3, 2006) at his home following a brief illness.

He was of the Methodist faith. James was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Lucy D. Gudger; sister, Mary E. Gudger; and brother, Danny Gudger.

James is survived by three brothers, David A.Gudger of the home, George Gudger and wife, Clara of Lithonia, Ga., and Bobby E. Gudger and wife, Stella of Rogersville; nephew, Robby Gudger and wife, Amy of Rogersville; several other nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jerry Harris and Minister Roy Charles officiating.

Following the funeral services, the Hawkins County Color Guard and the Tennessee Army National Guard will conduct military honors at Mitchell Crest Cemetery.

Clarence Johnson, 86, Appalachia, Va.
APPALACHIA, Va. - Clarence David Johnson, 86, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday (Jan. 3, 2006) at his home in Appalachia, Va., his residence since 1939.

He was born Feb. 21, 1919 in Wise County, Va. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Appalachia, a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, and a former member of the Lion's Club and the Kiwanis. He had spent four years as a member of the C.C.C. camp at Clintwood, Va., and was a veteran of World War II. He was a retired grocery store manager and a retired meat market manager.

He enjoyed his retirement, gardening, roaming the woods, watching his "hummers" from his favorite spot, his front porch swing. He will be missed by family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie B. and Sally Hounshell Johnson; son, Morgan David Johnson; sisters, Rose Johnson Williams, Anna (Sis) Johnson Stidham, Pearl (Babe) Johnson Justice; brothers, Loyd (Boyd) Johnson, Rufus Johnson, and Cecil Johnson.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Onnie Osborne Johnson, of the home; son, Gordon Ray Johnson and wife, Jane Smith Johnson, Ocoee, Fla.; two granddaughters, Janet Lynn (Johnson) and Rev. Jerry Rowell, Jacksonville, Fla., Patti Sue (Johnson) and Greg Andrew Hovey, Ocoee, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Heather Chula, Lexington, Ky., Joshua and wife Melissa Rowell, West Palm, Fla., Benjamin and wife Nina Rowell, Jacksonville, Fla., Rebekah Grace Rowell, Jacksonville, Fla., Hampton Andrew Hovey, Florida, Emma Elyse Hovey, Ocoee, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Elly E. Noel and Chloe Morgan Chula, both of Lexington, Ky.; several nieces, nephews living in Tennessee and Maryland and special friends, Billy and Virginia Hall.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Roy A. Green Funeral Home, Appalachia, Va.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jerry Rowell and Rev. Nick Brewer officiating.

Entombment will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens cemetery Mausoleum.
