ANDOVER, Va. - Jason Matthew Needham, 26, passed away Saturday (Jan. 7, 2006) at his home.
He was a graduate of Appalachia High School, Mountain Empire Community College, and had attended UVA at Wise. He was currently employed by Sykes, Wise, Va.
He attended the Andover United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, William and Elsie Needham; and his maternal grandparents, Beulah Morris and Charlie Christian.
He is survived by his parents, Sam and Judy Needham, Andover; three sisters, Natalie and (husband) Sammy Green, Appalachia, Va., Karen Kaylor, Bluff City, Jennifer Needham, Wise, Va.; brother, Richie and (wife) Lisa Needham, Derby, Va.; nieces and nephews, Jeffery Fleenor Jr., Jill Green, Kasie Needham, Lee Green, Crystal Womble, Shawn Falin, Candice Kaylor, Rachel Needham, and Samuel "Richie" Needham III; and special friend, Bridget Bevins.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Roy A. Green Funeral Home, Appalachia, Va.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday in the the funeral home chapel with Rev. Tony Nunley officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at the American Legion Cemetery. Family and friends will leave the funeral home at 11:15 a.m. and go in procession to the cemetery.

BLUFF CITY - Frank R. Norris, 48, of Bluff City, passed away Monday (Jan. 9, 2006) at his residence after a long illness and he is now safe in the arms of Jesus.

ANDOVER, Va. - Rita Pauline Parsons, 53, went home to be with her Lord Monday (Jan. 9, 2006) from her home.
She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, A.B. and Goldie Eldridge; granddaughter, Kymy Parsons; and brothers, Doyle and Troy Eldridge.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph Marvin Parsons, Andover; her children, Rita Jo Sizemore, Appalachia, Va., Joseph Burley Parsons, South Carolina, Marvin B. Parsons, Appalachia, Va., Joshua Matthew Parsons, Big Stone Gap, Va., Jacob Paul Parsons, Big Stone Gap, Va.; 14 grandchildren; two brothers, Jimmy Eldridge, Michigan, Raymond Eldridge, Richmond, Va.; several nieces and nephews; several close and loved friends.
The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the Roy A. Green Funeral Home, Appalachia, Va.
Her celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Lee Stidham officiating.

CHURCH HILL - Roy Neal Shanks, 37, of Church Hill, formerly of Rogersville, passed away Friday (Jan. 6, 2006).
He was employed with A&L Construction.
He was preceded in death by a brother, David Shanks in 1999; grandfather, Robert Phipps.
Survivors include his wife, Reda Shanks of the home; daughter, Jodi Shanks of Rogersville; mother, Georgia Shanks of Rogersville; brother, Rocky Shanks of Rogersville; sister, Michelle Shanks of Rogersville; nieces, Ashley, Danielle, Cassidy, Abbie; nephew, Zack; grandmother, Hazel Phipps of Rogersville; stepdaughter, Mandy Harles; stepgrandchildren, Kayla and Daren Harles; uncles, Dennis Phipps and Jerry Phipps of Rogersville; aunts, Janice Cook of Rogersville, Lucille Looney and Inez Wilson of Morristown.

Sidney S. Smith, 89, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - Sidney S. Smith, 89, passed away Friday (Jan. 6, 2006) at the VA Medical Center at Mountain Home, Tenn.
He was born April 29, 1916 in Stewartville, Minn. Sidney graduated high school and completed one semester of college in Rochester, Minn., (to play football). He worked at a variety of occupations before his retirement.
In his younger years, he was a grocery delivery boy, built hiking trails for the CCC's in northern Minnesota, was a stockboy for Woolworth's in downtown Minneapolis, and worked for the U.S. Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Navy as a pharmacist's mate.
After the war, he farmed for a while in rural Missouri before moving back to Minnesota, where he spent 17 years working as a machinist for Pioneer Engineering in Minneapolis. He single-parented three of his daughters after the death of their mother at age 35. In Minneapolis, he also worked as a carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, a taxi cab driver, and spent 10 years working as a general laborer in the construction trades.
Sidney traveled extensively in Mexico, Central and South America during this period. When he retired in 1981, he and his new wife, Alma, relocated to northeast Tennessee (Eidson), where they operated a mountain subsistence farm until 1996. They kept horses, cattle, goats, chickens, geese and pigs, and harvested hay. They raised large vegetable and flower gardens each year, and sold some of their meat, cheese, chickens and eggs to local neighbors.
Sid was a lifelong union and political activist, and ran for several political offices as an opposition candidate to the "status quo" politicians. His most recent political race was in 1988, when he ran as an unendorsed Democrat against incumbent congressman, Republican Jimmy Quillen.
Sidney was preceded in death by his parents, Kathryn Savage and Walter Wyman Smith; brothers, Wyman and Cornelius Smith; sisters, Winifred, Emily, Naomi, and Mary Jane; first wife, Miriam; second wife, Della; and grandson, James H. Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Alma Hester Smith, of the home; four daughters, Shirley Fimbres of California, Linda Orth and husband George of Rogersville, Roberta Smith and Vicky Smith of Minneapolis, Minn.; stepsons, Gregg Taragos and wife Lou, and Paul Taragos, all of Minneapolis; five grandchildren, Charles Maddox and wife Rahel, Russell Maddox, Nate Cohen Smith and Eli Smith-Persons, Katy Smith and husband Neil Partridge; two great-grandchildren, Davonte Jordan Smith and Destiny Jade Smith-Partridge; special nephew, Mori Cruz, wife Crystal and sons, Jordan and Christopher; and special family friend, Lynnette Shimoda Jacobson.
A memorial service will be held on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Holston Valley Unitarian-Universalist Church in Gray. To reach the church, take the Eastern Star exit from I-26, travel east on Eastern Star Rd. to Bob Jode Rd., turn right 1 mile to church.

Dennis Webb, 59, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Clarence Dennis Webb, 59, went to be with the Lord on Monday (Jan. 9, 2006) at Indian Path Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Kingsport but had spent the majority of his life in Church Hill. Dennis had served with the Tennessee Army National Guard.
Clarence Dennis Webb was a member of Belmont Baptist Church in Mount Carmel.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jamie Lynn Webb; his father, Jack Charles Webb; maternal grandparents, Ott and Hannah Baxter; and paternal grandmother, Jodie Webb.
He is survived by his daughters, Angie Ketron and husband Mark, and Tammy Mullins and husband Norman Lewis, all of Rogersville; son, Michael S. Webb and fiancee, Sarah Arroyo, Kingsport; his mother, Mary Webb, Church Hill; grandchildren, Cameron Ketron, Caleb Webb, Hunter Webb, Hudson Webb, Nathanael Mullins and Kade Smith; sister, Sue Winegar and husband Randall, Church Hill; brother, Bill Webb and wife Janice, Church Hill. Along with several nieces and nephews.

GREENEVILLE - Farrell Beverly, 81, formerly of Mt. Bethel Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 4, 2006) at Bristol Nursing Home, Bristol, Va.
He retired from Tool and Die Industry, Michigan. He was a member of Kingsport V.F.W. Post, and a veteran of World War II, having served in the Marine Corps. He participated in action against the enemy at Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands May 27, 1945-June 21, 1945. He participated in the occupation of China Oct. 1, 1945-Jan. 28, 1946.
He was the son of the late Toby W. and Eva Powers Beverly and was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Wardlaw Beverly; one sister, Lassie Beverly Buckbee; and one brother, T.W. Beverly.
Surviving are four daughters and two sons-in-law, Judy Morris, Madison Heights, Mich., Linda and Kenneth Gries, Mancelona, Mich., Cathy Sizemore, Madison Heights, Mich., Nancy and Larry Williams, Almont, Mich.; two grandchildren, LeAnn Stern and spouse, Barry, Columbus, Mich., Keith Gries and spouse Lisa, Lansing, Mich.; five great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, John C. and Betty Beverly, DeBary, Fla.; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Joan and Eldridge Hawk, Kingsport, Ann Russell, Chuckey and Faye Beverly, Dunedin, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.

Anna "Jimmie" Bowen, 88, Tazewell, Va.
TAZEWELL, Va. - Anna James ("Jimmie") Smith Bowen, 88, of the Cove area in Tazewell, Va., died Thursday (Jan. 5, 2006) at Tazewell Community Hospital.
She was the widow of the late Rees Tate (June) Bowen VI and had lived in the Cove for the last 57 years. "Jimmie" was born on Dec. 30, 1917, in Russell County and was the daughter of the late James Thomas Smith and Anna Lee Gilkeson Smith. She attended Mary Baldwin College and graduated from Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William & Mary (now Virginia Commonwealth) in Richmond, Virginia.
Upon graduation, she worked at a Settlement House (Friendship House) in Washington, D. C. During World War II, "Jimmie" served in Red Cross and was stationed at a psychiatric hospital in Kentucky. She taught first and second grade for 18 years at the Cove Elementary School (Tazewell County). She was a member of the Cove Church and the Elk Garden United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Rees T. Bowen VII and wife, Sallie, and George Bowen and wife, Donna, all of Maiden Springs, Va., and Tom Bowen and wife, Liz of Weber City, Va.; three grandchildren, Rees T. Bowen VIII, James T. Bowen II, and Hanna W. Hagy; one great-grandchild, Landon D. Fleisher; one sister-in-law, Irene Cecil Bowen Wendell of Rosedale, Va.; and one niece, Ann Wade Godwin of Fishersville, Va.
A special thanks to her personal caregivers, along with Dr. Stephen Rinehart, and the staffs of Tazewell Community Hospital and Home Health Care Services.
