Aline Horton Thomas, 85, Kannapolis, N.C.
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Mrs. Aline Horton Thomas, 85, of Camp Julia Road, and formerly of Mount Carmel, died Thursday (Jan. 5, 2006) at NorthEast Medical Center.
Born Oct. 20, 1920, in Hillsville, Va., she was a daughter of the late Lester Horton and Blanche Alderman Horton. She was a charter member of West Ridge Presbyterian Church in Mount Carmel. She moved to Kannapolis in 1995 and was active in the Sunshine Group at Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church.
She previously worked for Kresses Department Store and retired from K-Mart in Kingsport.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ennis Thomas, Jr., who died July 16, 1990; a daughter, Nancy Ruth Thomas; three brothers, Robert Horton, Owen Horton and Clarence Horton; and a brother-in-law, Melvin Mann.
Survivors include a daughter, Bettie Thomas Bean and husband, Ben, of Kannapolis; a sister, Violet Mann of Mount Carmel; one brother, Bill Horton of Mount Carmel; two granddaughters, Belinda Bean Campbell and husband, Leonard, and Barbara Bean Seagraves and husband, Scotty, both of Concord; a great-grandson, Caleb Alexander Campbell; four sisters-in-law, Margaret Horton, Sue Horton, Georgia Horton and Nell Horton, all of Mount Carmel; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. today at Lady's Funeral Home in Kannapolis and from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home in Church Hill.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jeff Morelock officiating.
Interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Church Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Shirley Wigley, 64, Hengar, Ala.
HENAGAR, Ala. - Mrs. Shirley Flemings Wigley, 64, passed away Thursday (Jan. 5, 2006) in Chattanooga.
Mrs. Wigley was a member of the Sylvania Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Troy and Ovell Louise (Wilbanks) Wigley.
She is survived by her kind and loving husband, Othel Ray Wiglely of Henagar; sisters, Barbara Hendricks of Ider, Evelyn Ford and Beatrice Walker, both of Henagar; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the Kerby Chapel with interment in Green Haven Memorial Gardens. Rev. Watson Williams and Rev. Randy Brown will officiate.

KINGSPORT - Rev. James T. Adcox, 70, died at 8:15 p.m. Monday at his home.
Rev. Adcox was a minister for 37 years in the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church, most of which was served in the Tri-Cities area.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alice Adcox; two brothers, Clarence Adcox and John Adcox; and three sisters, Thelma Mowen, Myrtle Scott and Josie Wilson.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley A. Adcox, Kingsport; three children, James Mark Adcox, Gray, Sherry L. Cross, Fond Du Lac, Wis., and John Matthew Adcox and wife, Diane, Gray; three grandchildren, Donald Jason Carter, John Mark Carter, and Emma Grace Adcox; three great-grandchildren, Olivia Nicole Carter, Donald Christopher Carter, and Angela Lynn Carter; one sister, Pauline Anderson, Knoxville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ketron Memorial United Methodist Church.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday at the church with Aaron Pierce, Gale Flanary, Paul Marchbanks and Maurice Lay officiating.

MARION, Ind. - Mollie Brooks, 77, 3903 S. Wisconsin St., died at 9:33 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 22, 2006) at her residence.
She was born April 4, 1929 in Pumpkin Cinder, Ky., to the late Ambrose and Ida (Church) Johnson. She married
Curtis Brooks in 1975 and he died Sept. 5, 2000. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Pentecostal Church.
She loved life, being in church, serving the Lord and enjoyed arts and crafts.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ambrose and Ida Johnson; and her husband, Curtis Brooks.
Surviving are a daughter, Wanda Sue Ashley, Marion, Ind.; sons, Earl (Gayle) Johnson and William Edward (Linda) Ashley, both of Big Stone Gap, Va.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Calling hours are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the First Pentecostal Church, Marion, Ind.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at the church with the Rev. Robert Harris officiating.

William M. Burden, 69, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - William M. Burden, 69, passed away on Friday (Jan. 20, 2006) at Indian Path Medical Center following a long and courageous battle associated with diabetes.
Throughout his life he was an inspiration to everyone who knew him.
Born in New Castle, Ind., on Sept. 9, 1936 to Joseph and Maggie (Whited) Burden, he was the youngest of seven children.
Upon graduation from high school in 1955, he enlisted and served honorably in the U.S. Air Force for 10 years. He served 30 years as a DoD Communications research analyst and government contractor, retiring in 1995. In all, he devoted over 40 years on Western-Eastern European assignments in service to his country.
He attended USAF Institute of Technology, Indiana University, Syracuse University, and graduated from the University of Maryland with a BA in German, Polish, Russian, and Slavic languages and literature.
A talented and renowned basketball coach, his accomplishments included numerous men's and women's military and European championship teams. Following the break-up of the Soviet Union, when Poland became a democracy, he was instrumental in establishing Little League baseball and other American youth sports programs within the Polish elementary school system.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and two sisters.
Surviving family members include his loving wife of over 49 years, Ruth; two sons, Christopher and Michael; six daughters, Shereen, Tammera, Melinda, Bethany, Kelly, and Erin; his sister, Martha Cooper; his brother, Don; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 100 Cannongate Road, Kingsport, on Thursday from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Memorial service will follow in the church at 7 p.m. with Bishop David Debry officiating.
Graveside service with military honors will take place on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Mountain Home Veterans National cemetery in Johnson City, Tenn., conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3 and Gate City Post #265.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Jeanette Carter, 82, Hiltons, Va.
HILTONS, Va. - Jeanette Carter, 82, went to be with the Lord early Sunday morning (Jan. 22, 2006) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born July 2, 1923, a daughter of the late A.P. and Sara Dougherty Carter of Scott County, Va. She was a member of the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, the founder of the Carter Family Memorial Music Center, Inc., and the Carter Family Museum, in which she took great pride. She had received numerous awards and recognition over the years, including the National Heritage Award for her dedication in preserving old-time and traditional music.
She was preceded in death by her son, Donald William Jett; her sister, Gladys Carter Millard; and her brother, Joe D. Carter.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Bob Forrester of Hiltons, Va.; her son and daughter-in-law, Dale Jett and wife Teresa of Hiltons, Va.; five grandchildren, Malissa Nowling, Justin Forrester, Tyler Forrester, Yancy Pyne and Tucker Jett; four great-grandchildren, William Nowling, Madison Pyne, Macey Pyne and Payton Pyne; the father of her children, James Livingston Jett of Bristol, Va.; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and others survive along with many "adopted" loved ones.
Her body will lie in state from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the Scott County Funeral Home, 280 Hwy. 23N, Weber City, Va., and the family will arrive at 4 p.m. to meet visitors.
Burial will be private and the public is asked to respect the family's privacy at this time.
A public memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at the Carter Family Fold at Hiltons, Va. Everyone wishing to attend these services are asked to arrive by 1:55 p.m.

She was born in Dickenson County, Va., and was the daughter of the late John Willard and Vadna McCoy Salyers.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Junior Cassell.
She is survived by two daughters, Delores Bond and husband, Rick, and Mary Christian, all of Kingsport; two sons, Doug Cassell and wife, Valerie, and Spike Cassell and wife, Kathy, all of Kingsport; one stepson, J.D. Cassell and wife, Janice of St. Paul, Va.; one stepdaughter, Nancy McGlothin of Cartersville, Ga.; three sisters, Easter Salyers, and Loretta Smith and husband, Virgil, all of West Dante, Va., and Louise Palmer and husband, Bill of Castlewood, Va.; two brothers, Darrell Salyers and wife, Loretta of West Dante, Va., and John V. JONESVILLE, Va. - Perry Fields was born Jan. 13, 1914, in Jonesville, Va., and went home to be with the Lord on Sunday (Jan. 22, 2006) at Lee Regional Medical Center.
He was a faithful member of Mount Washington Covenant Church until it closed. He then joined Thompson Settlement Baptist Church.
He retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation in 1976. He was a retired farmer and horseman. He and his late brother, L.C. Fields, owned and operated Mountain View Farm for more than 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Marian Fields; his parents, Carter and Nannie Jarnagin Fields; a son, Ralph Fields; a daughter-in-law, Lillie Fields; a son-in-law, Jim Seale; four brothers; and six sisters.
He is survived by one daughter, Carol Seale of Jonesville, Va.; four sons, Thomas Fields of Jonesville, Va., Norman Fields and wife, Maudie of Jonesville, Va., Eugene Fields and wife, Betsy of Grafton, Mass., and Jonesville, Va., and Rondall Fields and wife, Becky of Hanover, Va.; 15 grandchildren, Harold Fields, Greg Fields, Billy Fields, Chris Fields, Daniel Fields, Crystal Ketron, Tina Carnes, Michael Fields, Pamela Dunne, Jennifer Fields, Ben Sadler, Jr., Rachel Smith, Marianne Arney, Kari Fields, and Erin Fields; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Pansy Shuck of Longwood, Fla.; one brother, Rev. He was preceded in death by his father, Milo Gasper; grandparents; and one aunt.
