Jean Goins Burton, 81, Woodstock, Ga.
WOODSTOCK, Ga. - Jean Goins Burton, 81, passed away on Saturday (Jan. 21, 2006).

She was born Oct. 1, 1924 in Derby, Va., to Everett Cecil and Beatrice Hurd Goins. She was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Elbert Ray Burton.

Jean's early years were spent in southwest Virginia prior to moving to Kingsport, where she was a resident for 36 years.

After moving to Kingsport she was active in her church, Lynn Garden Baptist, as well as the local PTA where she held several offices. She retired from North Electric Company and moved to Woodstock, Ga., to be near her children and grandchildren. She was an avid gardener and loved to read, cook and entertain. Baking for her family and friends was a true source of joy.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-laws, Barry and Saralyn Burton of Fayetteville, Ga., and G.C. and Becky Burton of Duluth, Ga.; nine grandchildren, Amy Loggins, Neal Burton, Lori Burton, Whitney Burton, Courtney Burton, Abby Burton, Candace Burton, Sarah Burton and Brantley Burton; one great-grandchild, Jacob Loggins; sister, Ellen Pennington, Naples, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Holding Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, Va.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Robert Cornwell officiating.

Peggy Hickman Carberry, 56, Kingsport.
Graveside services for Peggy Hickman Carberry, 56, of Kingsport, who went to be with the Lord on Sunday (Jan. 22, 2006), will be held at 11 a.m. today at Oak Hill Cemetery, Kingsport.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport, is serving the Carberry family.

Jeanette Carter, 82, of Hiltons, Va.
HILTONS, Va. - Jeanette Carter, 82, went to be with the Lord early Sunday morning (Jan. 22, 2006) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was born July 2, 1923, a daughter of the late A.P. and Sara Dougherty Carter of Scott County, Va. She was a member of the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, the founder of the Carter Family Memorial Music Center, Inc., and the Carter Family Museum, in which she took great pride. She had received numerous awards and recognition over the years, including the National Heritage Award for her dedication in preserving old-time and traditional music.

She was preceded in death by her son, Donald William Jett; her sister, Gladys Carter Millard; and her brother, Joe D. Carter.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Bob Forrester of Hiltons, Va.; her son and daughter-in-law, Dale Jett and wife Teresa of Hiltons, Va.; five grandchildren, Malissa Nowling, Justin Forrester, Tyler Forrester, Yancy Pyne and Tucker Jett; four great-grandchildren, William Nowling, Madison Pyne, Macey Pyne and Payton Pyne; the father of her children, James Livingston Jett of Bristol, Va.; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and others survive along with many "adopted" loved ones.

Her body will lie in state from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Scott County Funeral Home, 280 Hwy. 23N, Weber City, Va., and the family will arrive at 4 p.m. to meet visitors.

Burial will be private and the public is asked to respect the family's privacy at this time.

A public memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at the Carter Family Fold at Hiltons, Va. Everyone wishing to attend these services is asked to arrive by 1:55 p.m.

Pallbearers are Tom Bledsoe, Blanard Collins, Bob Forrester, Raymond McLain, Dr. Joseph Smiddy and John Wolfe.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following non-profit organizations: Mt. Louella Casteel, 48, Surgoinsville.

Services for Louella Casteel, 47, of 254 Caney Valley Loop, Surgoinsville, who went to be with the Lord on Saturday evening (Jan. 21, 2006), will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Carter-Trent Funeral Home of Church Hill with Rev. Luther Presley, Rev. Waymond Linkous, Elder Fred Gilreath and Rev. JB Hughes officiating.

Quentin Thacker and the Gospel Travellers will be providing the music.

Following the funeral a graveside service will be conducted at Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Howard Presley, Allen Cox, Nelson McCracken, Matthew Fields, Nathan Fields and Ray Hensley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the mother, Bonnie Hensley Casteel, 254 Caney Valley Loop, Surgoinsville, TN 37873.

A special thank you goes out to the Wellmont Hospice, her co-workers, her neighbors and friends for all their love, care and support during her sickness.

Perry Fields, Jonesville, Va.
JONESVILLE, Va. - Perry Fields was born Jan. 13, 1914, in Jonesville, Va., and went home to be with the Lord on Sunday (Jan. 22, 2006) at Lee Regional Medical Center.

He was a faithful member of Mount Washington Covenant Church until it closed. He then joined Thompson Settlement Baptist Church.

He retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation in 1976. He was a retired farmer and horseman. He and his late brother, L.C. Fields, owned and operated Mountain View Farm for more than 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Marian Fields; his parents, Carter and Nannie Jarnagin Fields; a son, Ralph Fields; a daughter-in-law, Lillie Fields; a son-in-law, Jim Seale; four brothers; and six sisters.

He is survived by one daughter, Carol Seale of Jonesville, Va.; four sons, Thomas Fields of Jonesville, Va., Norman Fields and wife, Maudie of Jonesville, Va., Eugene Fields and wife, Betsy of Grafton, Mass., and Jonesville, Va., and Rondall Fields and wife, Becky of Hanover, Va.; 15 grandchildren, Harold Fields, Greg Fields, Billy Fields, Chris Fields, Daniel Fields, Crystal Ketron, Tina Carnes, Michael Fields, Pamela Dunne, Jennifer Fields, Ben Sadler, Jr., Rachel Smith, Marianne Arney, Kari Fields, and Erin Fields; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Pansy Shuck of Longwood, Fla.; one brother, Rev. Charles Fields of Anderson, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Jonesville, Va.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jim Hubbard and Pastor David Jones officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Powell Valley cemetery in Dryden, Va.

Those wishing to attend the graveside services are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Friday to proceed to the cemetery.

Arney-Mulllins Funeral Home of Jonesville, Va., is in charge of arrangements.

Jeffrey "Jeff" Gilliam, 26, Big Stone Gap, V.
BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Jeffrey Travis "Jeff" Gilliam, 26, passed away on Saturday (Jan. 21, 2006).

Jeff was a 1997 graduate of Powell Valley High School. His occupation was in the mining business.

Jeff was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ottis and Ollie Gilliam of Big Stone Gap; and maternal grandparents, Clyde and Myrtle Barker of Big Stone Gap.

He is survived by his parents, Bruce and Judy Gilliam, of the home; one brother, Bruce Gilliam, Jr. and wife, Lisa, of Pennington Gap, Va.; one sister, Linda Gilliam Franklin and husband, Randy of Appalachia, Va.; special aunt, Gertrude Bishop of Ohio; and a loving uncle to Brennan, Rachel, Logan, Dustin, and Nicholas.

Calling hours are from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap, Va.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

Committal services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at American Legion Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Thursday.

Billy Garrison, 62, Derby, Va.
DERBY, Va. - Billy Gerald Garrison, 62, passed away early Sunday morning (Jan. 22, 2006) at his residence.

A life resident of Derby, he was a former member of the Westmoreland Mine Rescue Team and the Appalachia Rescue Squad.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bud Garrison; and brother, Jim Garrison.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Garrison, of the home; mother, Inez Garrison of Derby; son, Billy J. and daughter-in-law, Casey Garrison of Derby; daughter, Tammy and son-in-law Ronnie Smith of Appalachia; grandchildren, Arron Smith, Jayden Davidson and Kaylee Garrison; sister, Shirley Thompson of Derby; brother, Tom Garrison of Jonesborough; sister-in-law, Louise Garrison; brothers-in-law, Wayne Snodgrass and wife Viola, Paul Snodgrass and wife Boots.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Gilliam Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, Va.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jim Johnson and Rev. Melvyn Eads officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the American Legion Cemetery, Big Stone Gap. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Marjorie Dean Homa, 69, Marlton, N.J.
MARLTON, N.J. - Marjorie Dean Homa (nee Smoot), 69, Marlton, N.J., died on Jan. 15, 2006.

Marjorie was born in New Hope, Ala., May 11, 1936, and lived in Kingsport from 1942 to 1959.

She will be missed by her many family members and friends. Marjorie worked 20 years for TWA Airlines.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Shelby Wyatt Smoot, Sr., 1936, New Hope, Ala., Anne Boyd Smoot Clark (nee Pegues) 1988, Kingsport; sisters, Viola Lee Smoot Plemons (Sam), 2004, Kingston, Tenn., Dorothy M. Smoot McDavid (A.C.), 1990, Kingsport; brothers, William P. Smoot, 1921, Marshall Co., Ala., and Omer Rome Smoot (Mary), 1987, San Diego, Calif.

She is survived by her son, Brian Todd Hollar (Joyce), Marlton, N.J.; grandchildren, Brian, Jr., Olivia Joyce, and Matthew Alexander; sister, Gloria Ann Smoot Nettles (Sam), Tuscaloosa, Ala.; brothers, Shelby Wyatt Smoot, Jr., (Mary) Kingsport, and Marvin Thomas Smoot, Sr., (Mary) Knoxville, Tenn.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 28, 2006) following visitation at 10 a.m. at First Broad St. United Methodist Church Chapel, 100 West Church Circle, Kingsport.

Condolences may be sent to the family through Bradley Funeral Home, Marlton, N.J.

Memorial donations may be made in her memory to Samaritan Hospice, 5 Eves Drive, Marlton, N.J. 08053.

Juanita Davis Housewright, 70, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - Juanita Davis Housewright, 70, went to be with the Lord Sunday (Jan. 22, 2006) at Church Hill Nursing Rehab following an extended illness.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Andy and Grace Davis; three brothers, App Davis, Fred Davis, and A.J. Davis, Jr.; sister, Mickie S. Williams.

She is survived by three daughters, Frances Horton of Bowie, Md., Laura Lanier and husband, Walter of Wakefield, Va., and Susie Green of Wakefield, Va.; two grandchildren, Ashley Green of Rogersville and Michael Lanier of Wakefield, Va.; two brothers, Billie T. Davis and wife, Betty, and George Davis and wife, Cleo, all of Mount Carmel; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Colboch-Price Funeral Home.

Services will follow at 8 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. LeRoy Davis officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Big Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Graveside services for Jerry W. Johnson, 61, of Kingsport, who went home to be with the Lord at 5:40 p.m. Friday (Jan. 20, 2006), will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in the Garden of the Apostles in East Lawn Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Hammond Post #3, the Gate City Post #265 and the Tennessee National Guard.

Pallbearers will be Lance Stallard, Matthew Dickerson, Brad Baker, Dale Jarrad, Daniel Browning and Nick Leach.

Honorary pallbearers will be brothers and brothers-in-law.

Arrangements are under the direction of East Lawn Funeral Home.

Maggie Lou Lane Lawson, 83, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - Maggie Lou Lane Lawson, 83, entered into rest Monday (Jan. 23, 2006) after an extended illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Causba Estepp Lane.

Including her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters; two brothers; and two infant siblings.

Survivors include her husband, Eugene Lawson, Gate City, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Nelson and Velima Lawson, Gate City, Va.; grandchildren, Lynn Lawson and wife, Vicki and Leslie Ann Lawson, all of Kingsport; two great-grandchildren, Laura Lawson and Hunter Lawson; special friend of the family, Leanne Culbertson; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Home.

Services will be at 8 p.m. today in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Brother Johnny Kendrick officiating.

Music will be provided by Jiggs (Charles) Willis and Lee Smith Singers.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va. The family will meet at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Nell Rose Lawson, 75, Kingsport.
Services for Nell Rose Morelock Lawson, 75, of Kingsport, who went to be with the Lord on Saturday (Jan. 21, 2006), will held at 11 a.m. today at the Mount Carmel Freewill Baptist Church, 3711 Beech Creek Road, Rogersville, with the Rev. Jack Morelock and Rev. Morris Baker officiating.

Mrs. Lawson will lie in state for one hour prior to the funeral service.

Music will be provided by the Mount Carmel Church choir.

Graveside services will follow in the Mount Carmel Church Cemetery, Rogersville (Beech Creek).

The pallbearers will be family and friends.
