Georgia Cobb Qualls, 85, Big Stone Gap, Va.
BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Georgia Cobb Qualls, born April 6, 1920, went to be with the Lord on Thursday (Jan. 19, 2006), passing away at Lonesome Pine Hospital.
Georgia was a lifelong resident of Big Stone Gap. She was a born-again Christian and past member of Robinette Chapel Church and Model Missionary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph "Pete" Qualls; parents, William and Minnie Lawson Cobb; three brothers, Luther, Orrell and Lloyd Cobb, all of Big Stone Gap; and three sisters, Elizabeth Bishop, Ella Hurd, and Hazel Shuler, all of Big Stone Gap.
She is survived by one daughter, Jewell and son-in-law, James "Bobby" Ramey of Big Stone Gap; one sister, Lillian and husband, Landon Hoilman of Big Stone Gap; one grandson, Michael B., wife Jennifer (Shelton), and one great-grandson, Michael Isaiah Ramey, all of Boone, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 12 noon to 2 p.m. today at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap, Va.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Gene Swinney officiating.
Burial will follow at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.

Joan Martin Stevens, 86, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Joan Martin Stevens, 86, of 1613 Harris Avenue, Kingsport, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the presence of her loving family at Wilcox Hospice Center at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center on Saturday (Jan. 21, 2006).
She was born Dominica Anne Versace on Sept. 16, 1919 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Angela Long Versace and Dominic Versace. She spent her formative years in the Alliance/Canton area and attended a convent for Catholic women for seven years in Wheeling, W.Va.
Her mother was widowed shortly after her birth and later married
Chris J. Martin who adopted her and moved the family to Johnson City to begin a restaurant business that lasted over 60 years – much of that time in Kingsport.
Joan was the first to bring pizza into the Kingsport area as the owner of the Martinique Restaurant and the Pizza Palace on Memorial Boulevard and later Stone Drive. She was known throughout East Tennessee for her Italian cooking and her friendly personality.
She was kind, generous, and never knew a stranger. Joan was a loving daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother and was loved by all who knew her.
Her loving husband, Robert H. Stevens Sr.; her parents, Angela and Chris J. Martin; and her sister, Katherine Martin of Bristol, Tenn., preceded her in death.
She is survived by five children, Robert H. Stevens Jr., Greensboro, N.C., John M. Stevens, Milton, Fla., Kathryn Waldo, Jonesborough, Christine Bowling, Kingsport, and Anita Kowal, Oceanside, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, with a third expected in February.
Joan is also survived by her brother, Frank J. Martin of Tamuning, Guam; her aunts, Grace Ganni and Nellie Fulmer of Ohio; cousins, Krystalia Travis, Denver, Colo., John Baker, Columbus, Ohio, and Danny Baker, Huntington, W.Va.
There will be a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at St. Dominic's Catholic Church, 2517 North John B. Dennis Hwy., Kingsport.
A Christian Wake service will be held at 8 p.m. Monday at the church following visitation.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at the church on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Father Charles Burton presiding.
Interment will be held at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Dominic's Catholic Church, 2517 North John B. Dennis Hwy., Kingsport, TN 37660, or to the charity of donor's choice.

Don Peyton Whited, 82, Charlottesville, Va.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Don Peyton Whited, DDS, died of a heart attack Thursday (Jan. 19, 2006) at a local nursing home in Charlottesville after a long illness. He was 82.
He was born Sept. 5, 1923 in Bristol, Va., and was the son of Gladys Grogan and Garland Whited.
He attended public schools in Gate City, Va. In 1942, he entered Lincoln Memorial University in Cumberland, Va., and transferred in the fall of 1943 to William & Mary College. He enlisted in the Navy Air Corps in 1944 and was trained as a radio/radar technician in a crew that checked all airplanes heading to the South Pacific. He left the Navy in 1946 and entered the Medical College of Virginia Dental School in 1952, where he received a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.
He was awarded the A.D. Williams scholarship for scholastic achievement at graduation. He was president of his class his sophomore year and was a member of Psi Omega professional fraternity and served as vice preside his junior year.
He was a member of Sigma Zeta scholarship society and Alpha Sigma Chi leadership society in his junior and senior years and was president of Alpha Sigma Chi his senior year. He received an appointment to serve for a year on a rotating internship in all branches of clinical dentistry in the U.S. Public Health Service and was assigned to the U.S. Public Health Hospital at Staten Island, N.Y., where he held a commission as assistant dental surgeon intern.
He moved to Charlottesville in 1956 and practiced general dentistry for four years. He then trained in orthodontics at Columbia University in New York City and returned to Charlottesville in 1963.
Dr. Whited served as president of the Charlottesville/Albemarle Dental Society, president of the Shenandoah Valley Dental Component and was a Fellow of the Virginia Dental Association. He was also president of the Virginia Orthodontic Association. He was an active member and an elder in the Westminster Presbyterian Church and was a past member of the Charlottesville Rotary Club.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Pati Fowler Whited; two daughters, a son and grandchildren: Marcia Whited and her daughter Grace of South Portland, Maine, Shann Whited of Charlottesville, and D. Peyton Whited Jr., wife Pamella and children, Austin, Jessie and Jeremy of Christiansburg, Va.
His younger brother, Joe Pence Whited, died in 1988 in Charlottesville.
A memorial service at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Rugby Road was held at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. James Baker officiated.
Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Westminster Church, Hospice of the Piedmont or any charity of choice.

Paul Daniel Carico Sr., 78, Coeburn, Va.
COEBURN, Va. - Paul Daniel Carico Sr., 78, loving husband and father, passed away Sunday (Jan. 29, 2006).
After graduating Coeburn High School Mr. Carico received a B.S. degree from Milligan College. He received his master's degree from East Tennessee State University.
Mr. Carico was a retired employee of Virginia Department of Corrections where he was the chief parole officer for District 18.
He was a member of Coeburn United Methodist Church, former member and past president of Coeburn Kiwanis Club, and a supporter of various other projects in Coeburn and Wise County.
Mr. Carico was a U.S. Army veteran and served his country in the Korean War.
He was the son of the late William Nathaniel Carico and Allie Barrett Horne Carico.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Carter Carico; daughter and husband, Kathy Musick and husband Lynn of Gate City, Va.; sons and daughters-in-law, Paul Daniel "Danny" Carico Jr. and wife Della of Morristown, and David Carico and wife Rebecca of Johnson City; grandchildren, Lauren, Lindsey, Kaitlyn, Katie, Allie, Ashley, Tim, Chelsey, Nathaniel and Chloe; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Coeburn United Methodist Church with funeral services at 8 p.m. with Rev. Pete Perdue and Bill Carico officiating.
Burial will be in Laurel Grove cemetery in Norton, Va., on Wednesday. The family will meet at the church at 11 a.m. and proceed to the cemetery in procession. Pound VFW will perform military graveside rites.

KINGSPORT - Gladys A. Cheek, 90, Kingsport, died at 7:10 a.m. Monday (Jan. 30, 2006).
Born in Coeburn, Va., she lived in Kingsport most of her life.
Mrs. Cheek was a member of Higher Ground Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mack C. Cheek; and a daughter, Nancy L. Dotson.

SOUTH KNOXVILLE - Geneva N. Manis (Granny) Covington, 91, passed away Sunday (Jan. 29, 2006) at Life Care of Ridgeview Terrace in Rutledge, Tenn.
She was a member of Kimberlain Heights Church of God and retired after 20 years of service from Baptist Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David (Earl) Covington; children, Marie Clark, Holbert E. Covington, James Leroy Covington and Myrtle Ann Covington.
Surviving are her children, Kathleen Howard, Mamie Carrigg, Robert (Wayne) Covington and wife Fran, Mary Alice Vineyard, Tommy Covington and wife Carolyn, Gordon Covington and wife Linda, Chucky Charles Covington and wife Sherry; 27 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
