ROGERSVILLE - Mae Madeline "Maddie" Garris, 88, of Rogersville, formerly of Marion, Ill., departed this life Saturday evening (Jan. 28, 2006) at her residence in Rogersville and now has her new home in heaven.
She had lived in Rogersville for the past 6 years.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Carter-Trent Funeral Home of Church Hill.
Jesse Sam Hickman, 69, Elizabethton
ELIZABETHTON - Jesse Sam Hickman, 69, 171 Sims Hill Rd., died Sunday (Jan. 29, 2006) in the Johnson City Medical Center after fighting a courageous battle with complications from diabetes and cardio-vascular disease.
A native of Dickenson County, Va., he was the son of the late Robert Hickman and Doris Rose Hickman Brooks. Mr. Hickman operated State Line Market and Sams Drive-In for a number of years.
He was a member of Sims Hill Christian Church and had lived in the community for 46 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nell Willis.
Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Matherly Hickman; a daughter and son-in-law, Cecelia and Richard Porch of Greenville, S.C.; four grandchildren, Travis Jack, Randi Teaster and husband, Brian, Matthew Lovelace and Miranda Lovelace; two great-grandsons, Ethan and Ryan; two sisters, Marcella Mullins of Bristol and Judy and her husband, Glen Grindstaff of Elizabethton; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Nina Hickman and Don and Brenda Hickman of Kingsport; a brother-in-law, Paul Willis; three sisters-in-law and their husbands, Gail and Sherman Tolley and Carolyn and Dallas Pierce of Elizabethton and Jessie and John Davis of Alexandria, Va.; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Memorial Funeral Chapel, Elizabethton. Friends may also call anytime at the residence.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Sims Hill Christian Church with Bret Jones and Henry Reynolds officiating.
Music will be provided by the Sims Hill Quartet.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Mary Schiff, 98, Greensburg, Ind.
GREENSBURG, Ind. - Mary Ellen Schiff, 98, died Monday (Jan. 30, 2006) at Decatur County Hospital in Greensburg.
Born Oct. 1, 1907 in Nicklesville, Va., she was the daughter of Felix and Lucy (Wood) Stapleton. She was a homemaker andhad worked for 20 years at the telephone company and several years as a cook at the St. Mary's School Cafeteria.
She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church and member of the St. Lawrence Ladies Auxiliary.
She was married
to Jack B. Schiff on April 24, 1937 and he preceded her in death on Nov. 4, 1998.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband; three brothers, R. Emmitt Stapleton, James Stapleton, Ralph Stapleton; and two sisters, Lois Wood, Catherine Johnson.
She is survived by two sons, Jack K. Schiff, Indianapolis, Donald W. Schiff, Greensburg; one daughter, Frieda Baldwin, Greensburg; two brothers, Gene Stapleton and Lawrence Stapleton, both of Kingsport; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg, Ind. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greensburg with Msgr. Harold Knueven officiating.
Interment will be held in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

KINGSPORT - Carl Edward Bernard, 60, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Saturday (Jan. 28, 2006) at Indian Path Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Anna Pearl Bernard Huffman; grandparents, Fred and Lokiel Bernard; and one sister, Elizabeth Hancock.
Carl was a loving father, grandfather and brother who will always be cherished, remembered and deeply missed. A member of Charity Chapel Baptist Church, it was his desire that everyone be prepared to meet God.
Surviving are his three daughters, Rebecca Webb and husband, Kenny, Karen Powell and boyfriend, Wesley Stevens, and Darlene Bernard; one son, David Bernard; three brothers, Charles Bernard, James Couch, and Verlin Jayne, all of Kingsport; two sisters, Wanda Greer and Brenda Barton; special friends in God, Heather Huffman, Joyce Strong and husband Stevie; two brother-in-laws, Noah Huffman and Norman Huffman of Loudon, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren, Samantha Beth, Lacy, Starr, Edith, Brandon, Gaile, Dustin, Daniel, Madison, and Seth; and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Sullivan County, Mrs. Breeding had lived in Dante, Va., for several years. She served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Hammond Post #3 and VFW Post #3382. She was an avid bingo player and was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, A.F. Breeding; daughter, Regina Lynn Breeding; parents, William S. and Lula Sutherland; brother, Russell Sutherland.
She is survived by her daughter, Kelly Breeding-Beran of Greeneville; stepdaughter, Lillie Tesch of Minnesota; sons, Richard Breeding and Terry Breeding, both of Kingsport; stepson, Al Breeding of St. Paul, Va.; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; sister, June L. Ackerman of Ridgeley, W.Va.; half sister, Mary Ellen Dingus of Kingsport; half brothers, Lee Roy Sutherland, Harry Truman Sutherland and Paul D. Sutherland, all of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and nephews.

GRAY - Mary Frances (McConnell) Eads, 73, went to be with the Lord at 3:25 a.m. Sunday at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born May 6, 1932 in Scott County, Va., she was a devoted housewife and mother and a very active member of Rock Heritage Baptist Church in Colonial Heights.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Nylas McConnell Mann; her grandparents, George D. and Ruby V. McConnell.
Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Joe Eads of the home; daughter, Teresa Jan Eads of the home; two sons, Michael Eads and wife Donna of Kingsport, Rick Eads and wife Angel of Chuckey; five grandchildren, Dustin Eads, Ashley Eads, Joey Shipley, Kayla Middleton and Daniel Middleton; one great-granddaughter, Chloe Eads; several other family and a host of friends also survive.

She was a lifelong resident of Lee County, a member of White Shoals Baptist Church, and a member of the Flatwoods Ruritan Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred Filmore and Sarah Catherine Dean Cooper; sister, Bertha Wolfe Taylor; five brothers, Alva Porter Dean, James Robert Cooper, Elbert Martin Cooper, Earnest Conley Cooper and John Ray Cooper.

KINGSPORT - Lela Mae Manning Gann, 85, went to be with the Lord on Saturday (Jan. 28, 2006) from Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born on June 27, 1920, Mrs Gann was a native of Sevierville and had lived there most of her life. She had spent the past several years in Kingsport with her daughter and family.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Sevierville.
She was the daughter of Mike and Evelyn Manning. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Thurman Gann; brothers, Link Manning, Charlie Manning, Earl Manning, Ottis Manning and an infant brother; sisters, Mary Manning, Lida Manning, and Buena Roberts.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Joel Sanders of Kingsport; granddaughter, Eliza Faith Sanders of Kingsport; brother, Rev. Bill Manning of Maryville; sister, Anah Arwood of Seymour; many nieces and nephews.
