CHURCH HILL - Graveside services for Linda R. Purkey, 57, who went to be with the Lord Thursday (Jan. 26, 2006), will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Church Hill Memory Gardens.

Nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Memorial contributions may be made to Freedom Independent Missionary Baptist Church, 1536 Independence Ave., Mount Carmel, Tenn. 37645.

Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Quillen, Greeneville.
GREENEVILLE - Mary Dean Bible Quillen died in her sleep at Wayne Memorial Hospital on Saturday (Jan. 21, 2006) after a long period of declining health.

She was born July 30, 1919 and was the daughter of A.F. and Miriam S. Bible.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Annette Smithson Wohlfahrt.

Surviving are two grandsons, Michael Scott Bush of Goldsboro, N.C., and John Thomas Bush of Kingsport; two great-grandchildren, Matthew Scott Bush and Ashley Nicole Bush.

Arrangements are still pending, but she will ultimately be interred at Andrew Johnson Veterans cemetery in Greeneville.

John "Pap" Self, 92, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - Services for John Melven Self (Pap), 92, of Rogersville, who died Wednesday (Jan. 25, 2006), will be held at Persia United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. today with the body lying in state one hour before the services. Rev. Fred Dimond and Carl Jones will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Persia United Methodist Church.

Colboch-Price Funeral Home in Rogersville is in charge of the arrangements.

Bob Short, 56, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Robert Louis Short Jr., 56, of Kingsport, died Saturday morning (Jan. 28, 2006) at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol.

Born in Lynchburg, Va., Bob had resided in the East Tennessee area for the past 20 years. He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corp during Vietnam.

Bob had worked for Carl Gregory Chrysler-Jeep in Johnson City and Alley's Dodge in Kingsport for many years.

He was a Baptist and was currently attending Tri-Cities Baptist Church.

His sister, Rebecca Short preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife, Cindy Short; one daughter, Jordan Short, both of the home; two sons, Cory Short and wife Angela of Thompson Station, Tenn., Justin Short and wife Jessica of Suffolk, Va.; four grandchildren, Claudia, Rebecca, Emily, and Taylor; his parents, Jeanette and Louis Short of Lynchburg, Va.; one sister, Alice Arthur and husband Steve of Lynchburg, Va.; three brothers, Ernest Short of Danville, Va., Ray Short and wife Tina of Great Falls, S.C., Matthew Short and wife Jennifer of Lynchburg, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Tri-Cities Baptist Church.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday at the church with Rev. Daryl Crouch and Rev. David Hobson officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Roan Valley cemetery in Bakersville, N.C.

Honorary pallbearers will be Rex Cole, Greg Greene, Dean Greene, Stacy Branson, and David Cole.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Arlene Tomlinson, 80, Clinchport, Va.
Services for Arlene Tomlinson, 80, of Clinchport, Va., who entered into rest Thursday (Jan. 26, 2006), will be held at 2 p.m. today at Purchase Community Church with Evangelist Garry Hood and Bro. Charles Rhoton officiating.

Music will be provided by Way of the Cross and Garry Hood.

Burial will follow the service at Tomlinson Family Cemetery, Clinchport, Va.

Grandsons and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Gate City Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Worley, 87, Bristol, Va.
BRISTOL, Va. - Mary Pauline Camper Worley, 87, of Bristol, Va., passed away Friday (Jan. 27, 2006) at Grace Healthcare, Abingdon, Va.

She was born May 2, 1918 in Scott County, Va., and was the daughter of the late Kenny and Blanche Camper.

Mrs. Worley was a proud member of Boohers Chapel United Methodist Church where she was very active until her illness. She was a devoted wife and mother and "granny" to many people. Pauline was a friend to everyone who knew her and was loved by all. Anyone who had met her will forever remember her beautiful smile, which she gave so freely.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Sutton Worley; a sister; several brothers; and a son-in-law, Ralph Salyer Jr.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Lynn Booher and husband, Jim, of Boozie Creek Rd., Bristol, Va., Betty Ann Counts and husband, Danny, of Marion, Va., and Bobby Sue Warren and husband, Sam, of Abingdon, Va.; five grandchildren, Cary Salyer, Ginger Warren, Earl Counts, Andy Counts and Dwight Counts; six great-grandchildren, Amy and Jodi Salyer, Carter and Megan Counts and Drew and Lindsey Counts; two half sisters, Peggy Camper Bland of Lake City, Fla., and Geri Camper Booher of Boozie Creek Rd., Bristol, Va.; two half brothers, Wiley Camper of Lake City, Fla., and Gerald Camper of Blountville; three brothers-in-law, Charles Worley, Myrt Worley and J.P. "Paul" Worley; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Akard Funeral Home, Bristol, Tenn., or at the home of her daughter, Mary Lynn Booher of Bristol, Va.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Keith McGrew officiating.

The committal service and interment will be conducted at 11 Monday in the Cox Family Cemetery.

Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

The family extends special love and thanks to Darlene Tucker of Abingdon, Va., for her devoted and loving care, and to Janice Witt, Janet Coyne and Teresa Greer who cared for Pauline prior to her admission to Grace Healthcare, along with Hospice of Southwest VA nurse, Louise Sloan and her caring staff, and all the devoted employees in every department of Grace Healthcare.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be sent to Boohers Chapel UMC, Rt. 3, Box 194, Bristol, VA 24202.

Charles "Shorty" Akers, Big Stone Gap, Va.
BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Charles Edward "Shorty" Akers passed away Friday (Jan. 27, 2006) at Heritage Hall Nursing Home.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Betty Hart Bays, 48, Bristol, Tenn.
BRISTOL, Tenn. - Betty Hart Bays, 48, went to her heavenly home on Friday (Jan. 27, 2006) with her family by her side.

Born on Jan. 23, 1958, in Abingdon, Va., she graduated from Abingdon High School, and held undergraduate and graduate degrees from East Tennessee State University. At the time of her death, Betty was the librarian at Holston View Elementary School.

Betty was a member of Fellowship Chapel Church in Bristol, Va.

Betty is survived by her husband, Larry Bays of Blountville; a son, Bradley Bays of Russellville, Tenn.; daughter, Laura and husband Michael Thelen of Manchester, Tenn.; parents, Ray and Ann Hart of Abingdon, Va.; brother, Alan Hart and his family of Bristol, Tenn.; father and mother-in-law, Harold and Louise Bays of Bristol, Va.; brothers-in-law, Phil, Randy and Barry Bays and their families, all of Bristol, Tenn.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 5:45 p.m. prior to the celebration service at Fellowship Chapel, 201 Crockett St., Bristol, Va.

A celebration of the faith and life of Betty Hart Bays will be conducted by Rev. Scott Price, Rev. Bryan Hall and Holston View Principal Tom Parker. Honorary minister of the celebration is Lester MacKinnon. The service, suitable for elementary school age children, will be held at 6 p.m. today at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to the Betty Bays Scholarship Fund for Future Teachers at Tri-Cities Christian School, 1500 Hwy. 75, Blountville, Tenn. 37617.

Jeanette Carter, 82, Hiltons, Va.
A public memorial service for Jeanette Carter, 82, Hiltons, Va., who went to be with the Lord early Sunday morning (Jan. 22, 2006), will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at the Carter Family Fold at Hiltons, Va. Everyone wishing to attend these services are asked to arrive by 1:55 p.m.

Pallbearers are Tom Bledsoe, Blanard Collins, Bob Forrester, Raymond McLain, Dr. Joseph Smiddy and John Wolfe.

Glynn Massengill Conner, 78, Johnson City.
JOHNSON CITY - Glynn Massengill Conner, 78, formerly of 211 E. Unaka Ave., passed away Friday (Jan. 27, 2006) at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.

He was a born in Washington County, Tenn., and was the son of the late Johhny Conner and Ruby Ellison Conner Reese.

Glynn is survived by four children, Glenda Conner Mowery of Knoxville, Sandra Conner Surcey and Darrell Wayne Conner of Kingsport and Theda Conner Prokos of Missouri; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley Reese Adams of Kingsport and Judy Reese Keefauver of Gray; and several nieces, nephews and cousin.

Glynn's wishes were to be cremated without services.

Serving the family of Glynn M. Conner is Snyder's Funeral Home, Gray.

Sam J. Davis, 90, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - Masonic services for Sam J. Davis, 90, of Rogersville, who passed away Thursday afternoon (Jan. 26, 2006) will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the Colboch-Price Funeral Home Chapel by the Overton Masonic Lodge #5 F&AM.

Funeral services will follow the Masonic services.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Cemetery.

Ethel Mae Fletcher, 91, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Ethel Mae Colley Fletcher, 91, went to be with the Lord on Thursday (Jan. 26, 2006) at Indian Path Medical Center, after declining health.

Born in Tookland, Va., Mrs. Fletcher had resided in Kingsport for several years.

She was a member of Temple Baptist Church

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Fletcher; parents, Emory Colley and Ollie Silcox Colley; daughter, Rita Mullins; grandson, Randall Mullins; and all of her sisters and brothers.

She is survived by a very special and caring daughter, Wilma L. Kerr of Kingsport and daughters, Genola Hawkins and husband, Mars Ervin of Kingsport, Anna S. Mullins and husband, Frank of Kingsport, and Edith Hawkins and husband, Gary of Kingsport; sons, Billy R. Fletcher and Jim R. Fletcher and wife, Bonnie, all of Kingsport; grandchildren, Billy Fletcher, Raymond Fletcher, Dwayne Fletcher, Crystal Fletcher, Cynthia Davis, Brownlow Mullins, Robert Mullins, Drema Jones, Angela Hawkins Linkous, Ben Hawkins, Timothy Fletcher, Scott Fletcher, Gennie Fletcher and Ashley Hawkins; son-in-law, Brownlow Mullins; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. today at the Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Pastor Brian Schuler officiating.

Music will be provided by Brent McNutt.

Burial will follow in Temple Hill Cemetery, Castlewood, Va.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and friends.

Honorary pallbearers will be John Colley, Sam Yates and Stoney Colley.

Gerald M. Greene, 65, Kingsport.
KINGPSPORT - Gerald M. Greene, 65, passed away Thursday (Jan. 26, 2006) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

Gerald was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and retired from Tennessee Eastman Company after 40 years of service in the tenite division.

Gerald was an avid motorcyclist, but his grandchildren were his pride and joy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy H. Greene, Sr. and Hester Sweet Greene.

Surviving are the mother of his children, Judy Greene of Kingsport; one daughter, Jill Brown and husband Adam of Knoxville; one son, Richard Greene and wife Teresa of Lenoir City, Tenn.; four grandchildren and one on the way, Logan and Stephen Brown, Colby and Katie Greene; one sister, Thelma Reagan and husband Charles of Alcoa, Tenn.; four brothers, Dr. Elmer Greene and wife Jayne of Kingsport, Roy H. Greene, Jr. and wife Betty of Church Hill, Joe Greene and wife Dot of Kingsport, Wayne Greene and wife Shirley of Gray; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.

Gerald's wishes were to be cremated.
