David D. Brown, 50, Dallas, Tex.
DALLAS, Tex. - David D. Brown, 50, of Dallas, Tex., formerly of Kingsport, passed away in Mesquite, Tex.

He was a member of the Colonial Heights United Methodist Church in Kingsport, and graduated in 1979 from U.T. with a degree in electrical engineering.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John H. and Loraine Brown; and step-mother, Marie Kays Brown. He was the grandson of the late John M. and Letitia Richardson Brown of the Fincastle community in LaFollette, Tenn., and George W. and Lillie Bell Linginfelter of Knoxville.

Survivors include his sisters, Janie Brown York of Memphis, and Pret Kays Diffle of Dallas, Tex.; brothers, Chris Brown of Houston, Tex., and Von Kays of Seattle, Wash.; and several other relatives and friends.

Private graveside services and interment will be at the Glade Springs cemetery in LaFollette, Tenn.

No visitation is planned.

William M. Burden, 69, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Memorial service for William M. Burden, 69, who passed away on Friday (Jan. 20, 2006), will be conducted at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 100 Cannongate Road, Kingsport, at 7 p.m. today with Bishop David Debry officiating.

Viewing will be held at the church from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today.

Graveside service with military honors will take place on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Mountain Home Veterans National cemetery in Johnson City, Tenn., conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3 and Gate City Post #265.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association or any charitable organization in memory of William M. Burden.

Jeanette Carter, 82, Hiltons, Va.
A public memorial service for Jeanette Carter, 82, Hiltons, Va., who went to be with the Lord early Sunday morning (Jan. 22, 2006), will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at the Carter Family Fold at Hiltons, Va. Everyone wishing to attend these services are asked to arrive by 1:55 p.m.

Pallbearers are Tom Bledsoe, Blanard Collins, Bob Forrester, Raymond McLain, Dr. Joseph Smiddy and John Wolfe.

Robert Edward Fields Sr., 70, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - Robert Edward Fields, Sr. 70, of Gate City, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday (Jan. 25, 2006) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was a lifelong resident of Scott County, Va., and was retired from Fred Lane Construction Co.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude H. Fields Sr. and Virgie Cole Fields; two brothers, James A. "Buster" Fields and Bengmon Fields; and four sisters, Roberta Fields, Bonnie Bellamy, Velma Robitson, and Beatrice Frazier.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Darter Fields of the home; his daughter, Tonya Fields of Gate City; his son, Robert Fields Jr. and wife Brenda; two grandchildren, Austin Gamble and Scotty Anderson; his sister, Helen Shelton of Gate City; two brothers, Claude H. Fields and wife Beulah of Jackson, Tenn., and Thomas Fields and wife Mary of Gate City; a special nephew, Thomas D. Fields II, and several other nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating.

Music will be by Durham's Quartet.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the funeral home chapel or you may call anytime at the residence, Rt. 2 Box 455H, Gate City.

Michael R. Gasper, 41, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Memorial service for Michael R. Gasper, 41, of Kingsport, who passed away on Monday (Jan. 23, 2006), will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. today in the chapel of Oak Hill Funeral Home with Steve Bufkin, Mike Beverly and Mike Gonce officiating.

Music will be provided by Grange Hall United Methodist Church choir.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home or anytime at the home of Charles and Brenda Cave, 301 Spruce St., Mount Carmel.

Melvin H. Gibson, 80, Big Stone Gap, Va.
BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Melvin H. Gibson, 80, passed away Wednesday (Jan. 25, 2006) at Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital.

Mr. Gibson was a life-resident of the area and a World War II veteran having received the Purple Heart medal.

He was self-employed and former employee of Westmoreland Coal Company and attended Powell Valley Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Gibson was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Gibson; parents, George and Verda King Gibson; four brothers, Hubert Gibson, Hobert Gibson, Harold Gibson and Herbert "Bill" Gibson; two sisters, Kathleen and Mildred.

Surviving are one son, Billy Gibson and wife, Leisa, Big Stone Gap; three grandchildren, Brian Gibson, Duane Gibson, and Courtney Gibson; one brother, Jim Gibson, Osaka.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Gilliam Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Lonnie Brooks officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Arlie D. Hartley, 73, Mount Carmel.
MOUNT CARMEL - Arlie D. Hartley, 73, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 24, 2006) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was retired from AFG Industries, was a Free and Accepted Mason belonging to a Lodge in Virginia, and was a veteran having served in the U.S. Air Force. He loved playing his guitar and guitar music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Stirl and Edith Hartley; brother, J.K. Hartley; and stepson, Thomas Meade.

He is survived by his daughter, Edye Dunn and husband, Mike of Mount Carmel; son, Joe Hartley and wife, Angie of Kingston; grandchildren, Nicholas Samson, Michaela Dunn, Blake Hartley, Alex Hartley and Meg Hartley; stepgrandchildren, Shawne, Heather and Jordan Meade of Kingsport; niece, Kristie Hardin and husband, John of Summerville, S.C.; special cousin, Elaine Greene and husband, Earl.

The family will receive friends anytime at the residence of Jeane Hartley, 313 Grandview Street, Church Hill, and from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville.

Services will follow at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Frank Clifton officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Lawson Cemetery.

Rhonda McArthur, 49, Norton, Va.
NORTON, Va. - Rhonda Lafawn McArthur, 49, passed away Monday evening (Jan. 23, 2006) at her home.

She was born in Norton, Va., and lived most of her life there. She was a graduate of Coeburn High School and was of the Baptist faith.

Rhonda was preceded in death by her father, Billie Carson McArthur.

Survivors include her mother, June McArthur, Norton, Va.; three daughters, Heather Shoemaker, Carla Bradford, and Emily Keith, all of Norton, Va.; three granddaughters, Kayla, Brandy and Megan; a brother and sister-in-law, Rick and Debbie McArthur, of Norton, Va.; an anonymous special friend; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Carty Funeral Home, Norton-Wise, Va.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Joe Dearry officiating.

Interment will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Laurel Grove Cemetery, Norton, Va. Friends and family members will leave the funeral home in procession at 10:30 a.m.

Friends will serve as pallbearers.

Clyde D. Mullins, 98, Pound, Va.
POUND, Va. - Clyde D. Mullins, 98, of Pound, Va., passed away early Monday morning (Jan. 23, 2006) at the National Health Care Center, Bristol, Va.

He was born on Nov. 5, 1907, and was basically a lifelong resident of Pound. He was a retired truck driver, having worked for Joy Manufacturing Company and Consolidated Coal Company. Mr. Mullins was a former mayor of Pound, having served four terms from 1982 to 1986 and 1990 to 1994. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was a son of the late Francis Mullins and Sarah Jane Hubbard Mullins.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Maxie Cantrell Mullins, on April 1, 1984; and a daughter, Ina Faye Felts; a great-grandson, Allen Head; and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lois M. and John A. Theodore, of Queenstown, Md., and Lavonne N. and Billy R. West, of Bristol, Va.; five grandchildren, Bob, Mike, Cheryl, Robin, and Jayne; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Guy K. Mullins, of Gresham, Ore.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Carty Funeral Home, Norton-Wise, Va.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home chapel with Rev. Eddie Sturgill officiating.

Interment will follow at the Dewey Memorial Cemetery, Pound, Va.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Lewis Powell, 84, Church Hill.
CHURCH HILL - Lewis Powell, 84, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 24, 2006) at the Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness.

Mr. Powell was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County and attended Harvest Community Church. He was a retired employee of Mead Corporation with 39 years of service and was a member of the Church Hill Ruritan Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Smith and Julie Cavin Powell; two brothers, Walter L. Powell and Arlen Wayne Powell; one sister, Sudie Powell Stroupe.

Surviving are his wife, Marylin Hankins Powell, Church Hill; one son, David T. Powell, Kingsport; two grandchildren, Lewis Rhett Powell and Bret Anderson; one sister, Beulah Harmon, Greeneville; one daughter-in-law, Lori Branscomb; three sisters-in-law, Iva Jo Powell, Deloris Sutherland and Nealie Stroupe; one brother-in-law, Lawrence Sutherland; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Johnson Funeral Home, Church Hill, and anytime at the home of his son, 332 Virgil Avenue, Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Bud Beverly and Brother Cecil Bell officiating.

The body will be taken Friday to Rose Hill Funeral Home in Greeneville where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. at Rose Hill Funeral Home with Pastor Bud Beverly and Brother Cecil Bell officiating.

Burial will follow in New Bethel Cemetery.

Johnson Funeral Home and Rose Hill Funeral Home are serving the Powell family.

Omega Jean Smith, 78, of Duffield, Va.
Services for Omega Jean Smith, 78, of Duffield, Va., who went home to be with the Lord, while surrounded by family and loved ones, on Sunday morning (Jan. 22, 2006), will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the chapel of The Duffield Funeral Home at Thomas Village with Rev. Garry Edwards, Rev. Robert (Buddy) Legg and Rev. Lester Horton officiating.

Music will be provided by Calvary Road Quartet, The Glory Echoes, and her grandson, Nathaniel Smith.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and anytime at the residence.

Committal services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Fraley cemetery in Pattonsville. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. for procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Paul Arwood, Bill Lane, Mike Payne, Roger Evans, Lloyd Love, and Jimmy Bishop.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kevin Smith, Nathaniel Smith, Timothy Smith, Billy Minton, Dennis Stanley, and area ministers.

Joseph K. "Joey" Taylor, 30, Hiltons, Va.
Services for Joseph Keith "Joey" Taylor, 30, Hiltons, Va., who passed away Monday (Jan. 23, 2006), will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in Darthula Baptist Church on Lunsford Mill Rd., Hiltons, with Rev. Layton Bentley officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church and anytime at the residence.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the family cemetery in Hiltons. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 a.m.

Pallbearers will be Trevor Keller, Joey Dean, Harrison Pippin, Adam Gardner, Bo Miller, Dewayne Cox.

Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., is in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence Taylor, 54, Dryden, Va.
DRYDEN, Va. - Lawrence Thomas (Tommy) Taylor was born in Big Stone Gap on Sunday, March 25, 1951, and passed away on Monday (Jan. 23, 2006) at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville at the age of 54 years.

Tommy was a retired mine supply clerk and a member of the Valley View Primitive Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Robert Taylor Sr. and Thelma Lovell Taylor; brother, Henry Robert (Buster) Taylor; and twin sisters.

Tommy is survived by his wife, Barbara Middleton Taylor, of the home; two sons, T.J. Taylor, of the home, Jason Alsup and wife, Linda of Pennington Gap, Va.; two grandchildren, Timothy Alsup and Arron Mooneyhan. He is also survived by one brother, Willie (Duke) Barker and wife, Shirley of Appalachia, Va.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Province Funeral Home, Pennington Gap, Va.

Services will be held at 8 p.m. today in the sanctuary of the funeral home with Charles Thompson officiating.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Middleton Family cemetery on Cave Springs Road, Dryden, Va. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 12 noon Friday to go to the cemetery.
