CHURCH HILL - Rhoda Light Marshall, 82, of Church Hill, passed away peacefully Tuesday (Jan. 31, 2006) at Church Hill Health Care Center.
Rhoda was a member of the McFerrin United Methodist Church. She retired from the Hawkins County School system as a school teacher. She taught at Mount Carmel, Church Hill Elementary and McPheeters Bend Elementary Schools during her career. She was a graduate of Sullivan High School and East Tennessee State University.
She was preceded in death by her father, Wilke B. Light; mother, Annie Wolfe Light; and six brothers, Erby, Rass, Glen, Willie, Lacy and Palmer Light.
She is survived by her husband, Ray H. Marshall, Church Hill, to whom she was married
58 plus years; sons, Michael A. Marshall and wife, Rebecca Jill of Versailles, Ky., and Ernie D. Marshall and wife, Anne of Church Hill; granddaughter, Vickie Alison Marshall Davidson and husband, Landon of Black Mountain, N.C.; grandson, Wesley David Marshall and wife, Tina of Marietta, Ga.; great-grandson, Asher Alexei Davidson; two sisters, Julia Light Pearson of Kingsport, and Elmina "Pat" Cantwell of Morristown; special friend and caregiver, Melba Powell; dear friends, Jennie V. Larkins and Reyta Smith; and a host of friends and relatives.
Our hearts go out to all the wonderful staff of the Church Hill Health Care Center for their dedication and loving care of Rhoda during the past 2½ years.
Wesley Marshall, Chris Marshall, Phil Ketron, Gregg Skelton and great-nephews will serve as pallbearers.
John Scism and Fred Castle will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Carter Trent Funeral Home, Church Hill, or anytime at the home of Ray Marshall, 155 Scism Lane, Church Hill.
Services will be held following visitation at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Regina Shelton officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at Mountain Home National Cemetery, Johnson City.
Family and friends are asked to assemble at the funeral home before 9 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.

John B. Nelson, 82, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - John Benjamin "B.J." Nelson, 82, of Kingsport, passed away on Tuesday (Jan. 31, 2006) at his residence.
He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon returning he worked at the Kingsport Press for over 21 years and moved to Plainfield, N.J., and lived there for over 19 years. He retired from the Tingley Rubber Corp. in 1990.
He was a member of the Riverside Ave. Baptist Church and a member of the American Legion Hammond Post #3.
Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his wife, Iva Nell Olinger Nelson; his parents, William David Nelson and Polly Arnold Howell Nelson; twin infant sisters and five other sisters, Amanda Stears, Verna Marshall, Mary Samples, Lola Mae Samples and Gladys Howell; four brothers, Bill Nelson, Earn Nelson, Howard Howell and Raymond Howell; and a son-in-law, Wilbur Fleenor.
He is survived by his daughter, Alma G. Fleenor of Kingsport; three sons and daughters-in-law, William David Nelson and wife Ellen of Munford, Tenn., Johnny Nelson and wife Hsiu-Luan of Oxnard, Calif., and Howard Nelson and wife Susan of Tulsa, Okla.; six grandchildren, Regina Simpson and husband Wayne, Thelma Nelson, Billy Nelson, Dee Dee Languedoc and husband Mike, Vivian Nelson and Christopher Nelson; seven great-grandchildren, Nocama, Jermiah, Tomah, Ashley, Cheynne, Michael and Jessica; and a lifelong friend, Robert Kendrick; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., or friends may call anytime at the home of his daughter, Alma Fleenor.
Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Calvin Bishop and Rev. Chris Christian officiating.
Music will be provided by Jim Hyatt.
Military graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va., conducted by American Legion Hammond Post # 3 and Gate City Post #265, with Joe W. Byrd, Chaplain.

Mary Coates Salyer, 76, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Mary "Topsy" Salyer, 76, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday (Jan. 31, 2006).
She lived most of her life in Kingsport and had resided several years in Russell County, Va.
She was a member of Higher Ground Baptist Church and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her father, John W. Coates Sr.; mother, Daisy Coates Porter; one son, John Plez Salyer; two sisters and one brother.
Survivors include her husband, Rev. Robert W. Salyer; two daughters, Deborah Sluss and husband Ralph of Castlewood, Va., and Pamela Busler of Church Hill. She was blessed with six grandchildren, Rob, Shane, Maria, Bobby, D.B. and Maryanne; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Velma Storey of Johnson City; several loving nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Marian Hughes.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Higher Ground Baptist Church.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the church with Dr. Phil Hoskins officiating.
Graveside services will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Gardens, Castlewood, Va.

KINGSPORT - Reba Mae Hyatt Scalf, 72, Kingsport, went to sleep in the arms of Jesus early Tuesday morning (Jan. 31, 2006) at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Piney Flats, she had lived in Kingsport for most of her life. Reba was a devoted Christian who loved the Lord with all her heart. She attended Mt. Calvary Baptist Church until poor health made it difficult.
She retired from Mama's House Restaurant after many years of service. Reba was a very special loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Her loving husband, Rev. Arthur Scalf; son, Kenneth Scalf; daughter, Brenda Sue Rogers; parents, John and Ida Dell Hyatt; brother, Bob Hyatt; and sisters, Janell Gibson and Freda Hammonds preceded her in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Geraldine Babb and husband Donnie, with whom she lived, Norma Jean Ritch and husband Bill, Kingsport; son, Rev. Jerry Scalf and wife Linda, Kingsport; three granddaughters, Cristina Babb, Renita Wolfe, and Tammy Rogers; three grandsons, Nathan Bowen, Jonathan Rogers, and Christopher Rogers; several great-grandchildren; one brother, Rev. M.D. Hyatt and wife Maggie, Jonesborough; several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Ruth Shehan, 82, Deland, Fla.
DELAND, Fla. - Ruth E. Shehan, 82, of Chipola Ave., Deland, Fla., who worked for Eastman Kodak Co., for 27 years in the textile division, died Dec. 13, 2005, at Woodland Terrace Nursing Center in Deland.
Survivors include a daughter, Hope Collins of Deland, Fla.; and a granddaughter, Nikki Collins.A memorial service will be held at a later date at Bethany Freewill Baptist Church in Chuckey, Tenn.

Carson D. Sloan, 63, Clinchport, Va.
CLINCHPORT, Va. - Carson D. Sloan born March 20, 1942, in West Virginia to the late Raleigh Denver and Juanita Williams Sloan and lived his life in Scott County, Va., the Fairview community, went to his eternal home at the age of 63 after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was a 1961 graduate of Rye Cove High School and served in the U.S. military served a tour of duty in Thailand during the Vietnam War and was a member of Post #15048 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Carson was a member of the Scott County Board of Education from 1980 to 1986 and retired from the Tennessee Eastman Chemical Company in 1997 after 31 years of service. He was a loving husband, father, brother and friend to all who have been blessed to have known him.
Carson was a Methodist having received Christ into his life in 1986.
He was preceded in death by his nephew, Aaron Sloan.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joyce Faye Sloan of the home; one son, Raleigh Sloan of Weber City, Va.; two brothers, Edsel Sloan and wife, Aida of Kingsport and Harmon Sloan and wife, Geneva of Clinchport, Va.; a special brother and sister-in-law, Phillip and Betty Willis of Kingsport; a special niece, Vickie Ketron of Kingsport; special nephew, Allan Hood and wife, Cindy of Clinchport, Va.; special great-niece, Alisha Hood; two great-nephews, Jonathan and Aaron Hood of Clinchport, Va.; and several other special nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, neighbors, and a host of friends.
The family would like to thank each one for the love and prayers during Carson's illness.
Visitation was held Wednesday at the Scott County Funeral Home.
Services will be held today at 1 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with Evangelist Kenneth Neeley and Rev. A.D. Williams officiating.

PENNINGTON GAP, Va. - Martha Jane Pigman Callahan, 82, of the Hickory Flats community, died Saturday (Feb. 4, 2006) at the Lee Regional Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Pennington Gap.
She was a graduate of Pound High School and the Johnson City Business College and was a former teacher, secretary and aide.
She was a member of Pennington Gap First United Methodist Church and a member of various community organizations.
She was preceded in death by her husband, C.M. Callahan Sr; her son, John Kelly Callahan; and her parents, Kelly Pigman and Rebecca Amburgey Pigman.
Surviving are her son, C.M. (Rick) Callahan Jr. and wife Melanie Jorgensen of Jonesville, Va.; and her two daughters, Rebecca Stapleton and husband, Dr. Chris Stapleton of Big Stone Gap, Va., and Louise Callahan of Memphis; and her four grandchildren, Sean Callahan, Caitlin Callahan, Christopher Stapleton, and Elizabeth Stapleton.

KINGSPORT - Walter M. Chumley, 76, of Kingsport, died Friday evening (Feb. 3, 2006) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after complications from a stroke.
Born in Spartanburg, S.C., he had resided in Kingsport most of his life. He served in the
U.S. Navy during 1947-1951, and worked for AFG Greenland Plant for 35 years.
Mr. Chumley was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Franklin Walter Zager; a brother, Richard Chumley; and a sister, Sarah Ketron.
Surviving are his wife, Emmajane Chumley of the home; two daughters, Laura Chumley of Syracuse, N.Y., and Judy Zager and husband, Jeff of Loudon, Tenn.; one son, Eugene Chumley and wife, Jennifer of Abingdon, Va.; four grandchildren, Gwendolyn Chumley, Alexander Gilley, Kathleen Zager, and Gregory Zager; one sister, Nell Anderson of Woodruff, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
