Kittie Livesay, 85, Dryden, Va.
DRYDEN, Va. - Kittie Hobbs Powers Livesay, 85, went to be with the Lord on Thursday evening (Feb. 2, 2006).

Mrs. Livesay was born July 11, 1920 and lived most of her life in Dryden, Va.

She was a member of Dryden United Methodist Church.

After graduating from Dryden High School, she continued her education at Hiwassee and Radford Colleges, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree from Radford. She became a school teacher, teaching 38 years, most of which were within the Lee County School System. She retired in 1980. She had a great love for her family and enjoyed many years of tending the farm left to her by her father.

Her parents, D.E. and Hattie Hobbs; sister, Merle Hobbs Ely; brother, Clyde W. Hobbs; and step-son, David Livesay, preceded her in death.

Surviving are her husband of 39 years, Arnold Livesay of the home; one daughter, Sharon Powers Peters and husband, Henry J. Peters, Jr., of Dryden, Va.; three grandchildren, Dawn Peters of Duffield, Va., Greg Peters and wife, Karen of Cookeville, Tenn., and Lisa Peters Valdez and husband, Eric of Quito, Ecuador; six great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Savannah Valdez, Sarah, Katherine, Marshall, and Rachel Peters; three sisters, Jessie Myers of Dryden, Va., Rebecca Neal of Clintwood, Va., and Mary Lynn Tritt of Pennington Gap, Va.; one sister-in-law, Lucy Hobbs of Dryden, Va.; two nieces, Frances Ely Ratliff of Church Hill and Elaine Hobbs Day of Dryden, Va.; three nephews, Wayne Myers of Dryden, Va., Dr. Patrick Tritt of Pennington Gap, Va., and Donnie Hobbs of Dryden, Va.; and two dear friends, Betty Sue Quillen and Marie Lane of Dryden, Va.

Also surviving are her five caregivers, whom she came to love dearly and who were totally devoted to her happiness and well being, Wanda Nelson of Pennington Gap, Va., Mary Ward of Stickleyville, Va., Betty Gruebel of Jonesville, Va., and Carolyn and Clona Dollar of Dryden, Va.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel in Pennington Gap, Va.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. the same evening with Lay Speaker, Henry J. Peters, Jr., officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Powell Valley cemetery in Dryden, Va., with Pastor Billy Kilgore officiating.

Pallbearers will be Greg Peters, Henry Peters, Wade Gardner, Bob Ratliff, Joe Ely, and Denny Flanary.

Virgle Manis, 76, Surgoinsville.
Graveside services for Virgle Manis, 76, of Surgoinsville, who passed away Wednesday (Feb. 1, 2006) will be held at 2 p.m. today at Longs Bend Cemetery.

Christian-Sells Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Ruth Martin, 72, Pennington Gap, Va.
PENNINGTON GAP, Va. - Betty Ruth Martin was born Wednesday, May 24, 1933 in Lee County, Va., and passed away on Thursday (Feb. 2, 2006) at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clyde Martin; second husband, Clarence Martin; and two sons, Jerry Lee Martin and Ricky Lynn Martin.

Betty is survived by her eight children, Wanda McKnight and husband, Randall of Jonesville, Va., Gloria Tkautz and husband, Jack of Hickory Flats, Va., Linda Coleman and husband, Jerry of Jonesville, Va., Brenda Bolling and husband, Terry of Jonesville, Va., Katie Kirkland and husband, Dan of Mentor, Ohio, Billy Martin and wife, Tammy of Mentor, Ohio, Becky Square and husband, Tommy of Mentor, Ohio, Shane Martin and wife, Nikki of Duffield, Va.; seven stepchildren; 20 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Jones of Pennington Gap, Va.

Funeral service will be at 8 p.m. today at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, Va. with Rev. Bruce Brewer and Randall McKnight officiating.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until time of service today.

Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Va.

Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. to go to the cemetery.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Edith Melton, 86, Gray.
GRAY - Edith Ferguson Melton, 86, while surrounded by her family, went to be with the Lord on Thursday (Feb. 2, 2006) at Greystone Healthcare following an extended illness.

Born and raised in Sullivan County, she had resided here all her life.

Mrs. Melton attended Apostolic Lighthouse.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Robert Melton (November 2005); infant son, Albert Franklin Melton; parents, George and Ellen Ferguson; seven brothers; one sister; and nieces and nephews.

Surviving are four daughters, Monnie Smallman of Blountville, Ruby Cross and husband, Charles of Gray, Linda Ruth Shields and husband, Jack of Vandalia, Ohio, and Nancy Sword of Johnson City; three sons, Robert Neal Melton and fiancee', Teresa Oliver, Jerry Melton, and Teddy Melton; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family expresses a special thanks to the health caregivers at Greystone Health Care for their care and support.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.

Services will follow at 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Rev. Jimmy Hammonds and Rev. Tommy Benton officiating.

Music will be provided by the Gilliam Family.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at East Lawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Darrell Smallman, Jeremiah Sword, Anthony Melton, Jerry Broyles, Charlie Cross, and Jeff Estepp.

Honorary pallbearers will be great-grandsons.

John B. Nelson, 82, Kingsport.
Military graveside services for John Benjamin "J.B." Nelson, 82, of Kingsport, who passed away on Tuesday (Jan. 31, 2006) will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va., conducted by American Legion Hammond Post # 3 and Gate City Post #265, with Joe W. Byrd, Chaplain.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Rev. Avery Nichols, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Rev. Avery Nichols, a man fully committed to God all his days, went home to be with his wife, Rosa Gertrude Nichols (who passed away Dec. 20, 2001), other family members, and a multitude of friends in our Father's house on Thursday (Feb. 2, 2006) from Holston Valley Medical Center.

Rev. Nichols was born in Goodwell, W.Va., on August 26, 1912, and was a son of the late William T. and Eliza Jane (Elliott) Nichols.

Rev. Nichols was a Baptist minister in the area churches for 59 years. He was a member of Sunnyside Baptist Church where he was a Senior Adult Minister.

He leaves behind his daughters, Sandra Templeton and husband, Michael and Doris Jones and husband, Van; five grandchildren, David Jones of Kingsport, Chris Richardson of Tampa, Fla., Kathy Fields of Kingsport, Libby Buchanan of Spruce Pine, N.C., and Scott Templeton of Kingsport; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Sunnyside Baptist Church and other times at the home of his daughter, Sandra Templeton.

Services will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Sunnyside Baptist Church with Dr. Jack Parrott and Rev. Carl Strickler officiating.

Entombment will be 3 p.m. Monday in the East Lawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum.

Pallbearers will be David Jones, Scott Templeton, Tony Fields, Matt Buchanan, Eddie Bishop, Harry Woods and Bill Maggard.

Honorary pallbearers will be Brian Richardson, Sr., and the adult men's Sunday School class of Sunnyside Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Gideon Memorial Bible Association, P.O. Box 571, Kingsport, Tenn., 37662 or the Samaritan's Purse, P.O. Box 3000 Boone, N.C. 28607-2999.

Elmer Thomas Osborne, 78, Castlewood, Va.
CASTLEWOOD, Va. - Elmer Thomas Osborne, 78, passed away on Thursday (Feb. 2, 2006) at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Va.

He was born in Dante, Va., on December 17, 1927, the youngest son of the late Tom and Maggie Holmes Osborne. He lived most of his life in Castlewood, Va.

He retired from the Pittston Coal Company after 36 years of coal mining. He was a well-known farmer in Russell County. He was a member of the St. Paul Masonic Lodge, # 343 A.F. & A.M., the Clinch ValleyChapter Order of the Eastern Star #152, and the United Mine Workers of America.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; three brothers; and one grand-daughter.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret Ramsey Osborne; one son, Elmer Osborne, Jr., and wife, Deena of Castlewood, Va.; four daughters, Pamela Kellner and husband, Gary of Buffalo, N.Y., Rebecca Branson and husband, David of Kingsport, Jeannie Bellamy and husband, George of Castlewood, Va., and Annette Fields and husband, Wayne of Castlewood, Va.; nine grandchildren, Sara Jo Stallard, Beth Osborne, Darby Lee Branson, Melissa Ann Browning, Stephaine Kellner, Heidi Wilson, John Thomas Osborne, Ramsey Elliott Kellner, William Thomas Fields; three great-grandchildren, Alex Stallard, Faith Austin, Jett Wilson; one sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Osborne; one brother-in-law, Joe Buchanan; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are incomplete.

CHURCH HILL - Mr. Garnie Joe Peters, Sr., 73, entered into rest Friday (Feb. 3, 2006) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Kimberly Golden Sills, 48, Bristol, Tenn.
BRISTOL, Tenn. - Kimberly Golden Sills, 48, of Kentucky Ave., passed away unexpectedly Friday morning (Feb. 3, 2006) at her residence.

Arrangements and survivors will be announced later by Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va.

Herman J. Smith, 80, Blountville.
BLOUNTVILLE - Herman J. Smith, 80, went to be with the Lord Thursday (Feb. 2, 2006) at the Bristol Regional Medical Center.

He was born December 3, 1925, in Blountville, Tenn., a son of the late Charles and Alice Kidd Smith. Mr. Smith made his home in the Blountville area all of his life and was a charter member of Blountville Christian Church. He retired from Eastman Kodak after 52 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Milhorn Smith; daughters, Jane Huff and husband, Dicky and Rhonda Ann Bettis and husband, Dan P.; grandchildren, Spring Tate and husband, Will and Abigail E. Fields and husband, Stephen; great-grandson, William Ashley Tate, Jr.; sisters, Dot Robinette and Florence Jones and husband, Howard; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:45 p.m. today, prior to the service.

Services will be held today at 8 p.m. at Blountville Christian Church with Ministers Dwight Shaffer, Leland Houser and Bob Allen officiating.

The burial will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Church of the Brethren Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Thomas "Bud" Shumaker, Johnny Milhorn, David Smith, Michael Smith, Keith Jones, Ronnie Maness, Stephen Fields and Will Tate.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Blountville Christian Church for the Dr. Freddie Martin Mission Trip at 1680 Blountville Blvd. Blountville, TN 37617.

Weaver Funeral Home and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.

Katie Lee Smith, 90, Andover, Va.
ANDOVER, Va. - Katie Lee Smith, 90, passed away Thursday (Feb. 2, 2006) at her home in Andover, Va.

She had lived most of her life in Inman and Andover. She was of the Methodist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Golda Smith; and brothers, Herbert Smith and Elmo Smith.

She is survived by her sister, Maude Jervis of Andover, Va.; nephews, David Jervis of Crackers Neck, Va., Pat Jervis and Danny Jervis, both of Kingsport, Snuffy Smith of Madison, Wis.; nieces, Pam Walton of Big Stone Gap, Va., Prissy Acevedo of Mt. Claire, N.J.; and sister-in-law, Joyce Smith of Appalachia, Va.

The family will receive friends at Roy A. Green Funeral Home from 12 noon till 2 p.m. Sunday, before services.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Alyson Jenkins officiating.

Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Patrick Lee Anshutz, 60, Gray, Tenn.
GRAY, Tenn. - Patrick Lee Anshutz, 60, 117 Valley Place, Gray, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday (April 12, 2006) at Northside Hospital.

Ray James Baldwin, 83, Clinchport, Va.
CLINCHPORT, Va. - Ray James Baldwin, 83, passed away Thursday (April 13, 2006) at the Brian Center after a courageous battle with cancer.

David Boyd, 53, Church Hill
CHURCH HILL - David Michael Boyd, 53, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday (April 12, 2006) at Brookhaven Manor.

He was born in Long Beach, Calif., and had lived in this area since 1990. He served in the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Texas Boyd, Sr.

Surviving are his wife, Brenda D. Boyd, of the home; his twin daughters, Pikki Boyd and Via Boyd, both of California and daughter, Steffanie Boyd of Washington; step-daughter, Tina Meza and husband Roberto of Seymore, Tenn.; his son, Jack Falin, Jr. and wife Juanita of Rogersville; mother, Ruth Samonis Boyd of Backer City, Oreg.; step-mother, Mildred Boyd of Church Hill; five grandchildren; one sister, Susan Quigley of Arizona; three brothers, Paul T. Boyd, Jr. of Texas, Alex Boyd of California and Bob Boyd of Mount Carmel; along with several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport.

Services will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Alvin Skelton officiating.

Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post # 3 and Post #265.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Brookhaven Manor, and Fran Cook at Adventa Hospice.
