Monnie Gillenwater, 94, Gate City, Va.
GATE CITY, Va. - Monnie Gillenwater, 94, entered into rest April 12, 2006.
She was born in Scott County, Va. on Feb. 29, 1912 to the late Tommy R. Lane and Mary Delilah Lane. Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jake Gillenwater; two daughters, Bobbie Jean and Rosa Mae Gillenwater; one son, Robert Gillenwater; sisters, Maxie McConnell, Nora Peters, Flora Gillenwater and Venus Lane; brothers, Lawrence, Walter, Lloyd and Corbitt Lane; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
Ms. Gillenwater was of the Baptist faith and was a dedicated member of Midway Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann (Lonnie) Gray, Cicero, Ill., Shirley (Rev. Coy) Butler, Kingsport, Juanita (Ralph) Egan, Gate City, Va.; sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. Joe Edward (Iris) Gillenwater, Kingsport, Charles Gillenwater, Gate City, Va., Howard (Glanelle) Gillenwater, Gate City, Va., Virgil (Maria) Gillenwater, Killeen, Tex., Gerald (Delilah) Gillenwater, Kingsport and Tommy Ray (Janice) Gillenwater, Gate City, Va.; sister, Annalee Quillen, Blufton, Ind.N; brother, Worley Lane, Ft. Blackmore, VA; sister-in-law, Louise Gillenwater, Erwin, TN; 32 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Gate City Funeral Home and anytime at her residence.
Services will be at 7 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Edward Gillenwater, Rev. Coy Butler and Rev. George Willis officiating. Eulogy will be given by Marvin Egan.
Music will be provided by Been 4 Given and Pine Grove Harmony.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Brickey Cemetery, Ft. Blackmore, Va. The family will meet at 1 p.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be great-grandsons.

James Powell Hawk, 83, Blountville.
BLOUNTVILLE - James Powell Hawk, 83, Blountville, passed away Tuesday (April 11, 2006).
He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County and an employee of Tennessee Eastman Company for 41 years in Chemical Research. Powell served as Sullivan County Magistrate for 18 years and on many other public service committees. He was an active member of the Holston Ruritan Club with 34 years perfect attendance.
Powell was a loving husband of 54 years, who also farmed and raised Hereford cattle.
He was a member of Wheeler United Methodist Church and served in various leadership roles in the church.
Preceding him in death were his parents, J. Vender Hawk and Fannie Powell Hawk; one sister, Marye Emma Hawk Babcock; and one nephew, William Babcock.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Dickson Hawk; one daughter, Kitty Loewen and husband Ron, Knoxville; one son, James Dickson Hawk and wife Martha, Blountville; five grandchildren, Luke, Morgan, and Meredith Hawk, Annie and Jessie Loewen; nephews, C. M. "Sam" Babcock and wife, Paula, Bartlett, Tenn. and Marty Browder and wife, Alice, Kingsport; one niece, Martha White and husband Eddie, Kingsport.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at East Lawn Memorial Park.
Honorary pallbearers will be John White, Eddie White, Marty Browder, J. C. Akard, Rudy Greear, George K. Barnes, members of Holston Ruritan Club, and friends and neighbors.

ROGERSVILLE - Irene Helton, 83, of Rogersville, went to be with the Lord Thursday morning (April 13, 2006) at the residence of her daughter, Brenda Atkins, in Church Hill, following a brief illness.
She was the oldest member of New Life Baptist Church.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and was an inspiration to all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Coy Helton; parents, Henry and Minnie Henard Brooks; sons, Kenneth and Ronald Helton; grandson, Brent Atkins; and brother, Johnny Brooks.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Albert Atkins of Church Hill; granddaughters, Rhonda Reddington and husband, Jim of Surgoinsville, Sabrina Coffey and husband, Gary of Mooresburg, and Shellena Snodgrass and husband, Jeff of Kingsport; grandson, Brian Helton of Knoxville; great-grandchildren, Matthew and Kayla Elkins, Whitney Coffey, Jonathan, Zachary, and Kristen Helton, Ansley and Aiden Snodgrass; daughters-in-law, Marie Helton and Brenda Helton Trent; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Colboch-Price Funeral Home.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at New Life Baptist Church with Rev. Carroll Jarnigan, Rev. Ronnie Trent, and Rev. Franklin Barnette officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the services.

KINGSPORT - George Million, 90, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Thursday morning (April 13, 2006), after a brief illness.
The family states Mr. Million was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.
Mr. Million was born in Lee County, Va., and has resided in Kingsport for the past 58 years. He was a member of West View Baptist Church where he served as deacon and has served in several other capacities. He is retired from Roy B. Moore Trucking Co.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eli and Maggie Cassel Million; wife, Mary Frances Million; son, Haskell Million; five sisters; and five brothers.
Surviving are his wife, Iona Sanders Million; daughter, Nancy Bays and husband, Donnie, Weber City, Va.; two step-sons, Ray Sanders and wife, Sally, Kingsport and Ronald Sanders and wife, Sharon, Kingsport; four grandchildren, Terry Seal and husband, Mike, Gray, Tenn., Kim Hodge and husband, Larry, Johnson City, Martin Million and wife, Susie, Gray, Tenn., and Christa Feathers and husband, Tracy, Johnson City; one brother, Dennis Million and wife, Jeanette, Stickleyville, Va.; 10 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; daughter-in-law, Betty Million Eads, Gray, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Surviving are a devoted companion and friend, Roy Hoskin and her beloved dog, Sugar; devoted mother of James and Shirley Oaks of Hebron, Ky., Doris and Walt Bickel of Williamsburg, Ohio, Sherry and Marvin Simpkins of Dryden, Va., Tony and Penny Oaks of Cincinnati, Ohio and Janelle Inman of Lake City, Fla.; 19 grandchildren and 15-great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul Huff of Roanoke, Va.; and many devoted friends.

KINGSPORT - Alma Vera Taylor, 94, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Thursday (April 13, 2006) at 6:10 a.m., at Church Hill Life Care and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness.
Mrs. Taylor was born in Sullivan County and has resided here her entire life. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church where she taught the lady's class since 1975. Prior to that she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she taught a ladies Sunday School class for 30 years. She was saved at the age of 19 and served the Lord faithfully for the remainder of her life. Her class and church were very dear to her.
She is preceded in death by her husband, J.R. "Bob" Taylor; and her parents, Benton and Frances Bowery Brown.
Surviving are her great-nephew, Ira E. Taylor and wife, Elizabeth, who were her caregivers, Church Hill; cousins, Mary Carter, V.E. Bowery, Claude Bowery and wife, Esther, Parker Brown and Sue Brown, all of Kingsport; and several great-great-great-nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel of Oak Hill Funeral Home.

DUFFIELD, Va. - Linda Lou Laney Thornton, 59, of Duffield, Va., passed away Thursday (April 13, 2006) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
She was born in Fort Blackmore, Va., and had lived in Scott County most of her adult life. Linda was a homemaker who enjoyed visiting family and friends and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Marion S. Laney and Ora Stapleton Laney; sisters, Margaret Emogene Stapleton Moore, Redith Alvonia Laney Powers, and Mary Etta Laney Moore; brother, Jimmy Dale Laney; and nephew, Preston Gordon Bledsoe.
Linda is survived by one son, Ricky Lynn Laney, Kingsport; three sisters, Ines Hannah Laney Isaacs and husband, John Wayne K., Alta Loma, Calif., Carletta Laney Sims and fiance', Ricky McBee, Kingsport, and Peggy Anita Laney Reed, Kingsport; two brothers, Buren Efford Laney, Kingsport, and Johnny Edwin Laney and wife, Sarah, Hansonville, Va.; beloved friend, Roy Dulaney, Pattonsville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews, whom she cherished.
