GRAY - Edith Hammitt, 75, 598 Liberty Church Rd., passed away early Sunday morning at Indian Path Medical Center after an extended illness.
She was a native of Scott County, Va., and was a daughter of the late Clint Hensley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Emory Lee Hammitt; four brothers, Genie Hensley, Curtis Hensley, Clint Hensley, and Henry Hensley; one sister, Louise Wise.
She is survived by one daughter, Rita Hammitt; one son, Curtis Hammitt; one grandson, Kenneth Hammit; one granddaughter, Lisa Hammitt Guillion; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Gray Funeral Home.
Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel.
Interment will follow in the Washington County Memory Gardens.

BULLS GAP - Margaret Chesnutt Jones, 55, died Sunday (April 9, 2006) at her residence following an extended illness.
She was a member of McCloud Missionary Baptist Church.
Mrs. Jones was a retired school bus driver for the Hawkins County School System.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Gladys Short Chesnutt.
Survivors include her husband, Larry Jones of the home; daughter, Amy Jones; son, Allen Jones and special friend, Charleen Wilson; sister, Sandra Davis and husband, Charles; brothers, Gary Chesnutt and wife, Bonnie, Barry Chesnutt, Frank Chesnutt and special friend, Frankie Rogers, all of Rogersville; grandson, Matt Duncan of Morristown; several nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law; special friends, Anita Parks and Faye Calton.

Verlin "Skip" King, 85, Bristol, Va.
BRISTOL, Va. - Verlin Samuel "Skip" King, 85, died Saturday (April 8, 2006) at Wellmont Hospice House.
He was born in Piney Flats on May 11, 1920, to the late Edward "Ned" King and Bertha Torbett King.
He was a graduate of Mary Hughes High School and East Tennessee State University, with additional courses at the University of Virginia. He was a registered professional engineer in the State of Tennessee. He held a commercial pilot's license and A&P mechanics rating and was owner, operator and flight instructor of Holston Flying Service, Chilhowie, Va. He was project engineer of Lincoln Industries of Marion, Va., chief engineer of Holston Steel Structures, design engineer at Bristol Steel & Iron Works, and senior structural engineer at Tennessee Eastman until his retirement Feb. 1, 1986.
He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon, elder, and assistant scout master of Boy Scout Troop 16. He had served as president of the Bristol Host Lions Club and was chairman, Executive Committee Eye Bank and Sight Conservation Society of Va. He was a member of Mount Rogers District Planning Commission, Bristol Virginia Planning Commission, and past-president of Bristol Young Democrats Club.
"Skip" was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing. He was an accomplished woodworker, photographer, and had a keen interest in local history. He was known by his family and friends for his sense of humor and his gift for storytelling. He enjoyed horticulture and farming and took pleasure in building Templin Flower Garden in Bristol, Va. and Floral King Greenhouses in Piney Flats with his son David.
He was preceded in death by his youngest son, David King of Piney Flats.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Margaret Bierbaum King; two daughters, Linda King Olson and her husband Dave, Newport News, Va.; their sons, Aaron, of Richmond, and Michael of Newport News; Connie King Bullock and her husband Scott of Bristol, Va., and their children, Brittney Freeland and her husband Jamie, New York City, N.Y., and Brant Bullock of Black Mountain, N.C.; one son, Dr. Michael L. King, New Hope, Pa.
The family would like to thank Dr. T.C. Greene for his exceptional care and expertise during the past 16 years, Dr. Sue Prill and her staff, and the hospice nurses and aides for their professional care and loving support during the recent months.
Services will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. today at Central Presbyterian Church in Bristol, Va., with Dr. David Wadsworth officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in Central Hall.

Kenneth Lawson, 83, Norton, Va.
NORTON, Va. - Kenneth E. "Bull" Lawson, 83, died Sunday (April 9, 2006) at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital.
Born in the Ramsey community of Norton, he was the son of Tyler and Bertha Graham Lawson. During the Great Depression era, "Bull" served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, where he learned many of the skills used in his life as a construction heavy equipment operator. He proudly served his country as a soldier of the U.S. Army in Burma during World War II. He was a member of VFW Post 4301 in Norton. Mr. Lawson was a charter member, deacon, and song leader in the Faith Freewill Baptist Church. A generation of Norton's children will remember him for his involvement in the Norton Little League baseball program in the 1950s and 1960s.
His wife, Buna, preceded him death in 1978.
He is survived by his daughter (and spouse) Jacki (Bill) David of Norton; a step-daughter, Audra Fay (Danny) Moore, Kingsport; grandchildren, Becky (David) Meade, Gate City, Va., Monica David, Norton, Va., Dan Moore, Jr., Florianopolis, Brazil, Christy Moore, St. Paul, Minn.; great-grandchildren are Trevor, Lauren and Emily Meade. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends after 5 p.m. today at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home.

Jean was born in Kingsport where she had lived most of her life, and was retired from Parks-Belk following several years of service. She was a member of Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Richards; and her parents, Dennie Casteel and Pauline Pyle Casteel.
Surviving are her daughter, Sharon Cole and husband Tom, Kingsport; son, Joseph Michael Richards and wife Terri, Kingsport; two granddaughters, Tammy Cantrell and husband Jeremy of Atlanta, Ga., and Melanie Richards, Kingsport; an adopted granddaughter, Jennifer Lavarn of Kingsport; two sisters, Barbara Combs and husband Hascal, and Carolyn Morelock and husband Bill, all of Mount Carmel; several nieces and nephews.

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. - Era Landess Sellars, 91, of Brownsville, Tenn., died early Sunday (April 9, 2006) at NHC Health Care in Johnson City.
She was born in Whiteville, Tenn., and lived in Brownsville most of her life, where she and her husband owned and operated Sellars Service Station. Mrs. Sellars was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Brownsville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Sellars; and sister, Eleanor Landess Gideon.
She is survived by a sister, Rosa Landess Bourland, Memphis, Tenn.; seven nephews, Harry T. Gideon, Sr., Kingsport, James G. Gideon, Franklin, Tenn., John Gideon, Atlanta, Ga., Dr. Robert L. Bourland, Dr. William L. Bourland, and Donald Bourland, all of Memphis, Tenn., and David Bourland, Sacramento, Calif.
