Morris Franklyn Epps

Epps, Morris Franklyn, age 77, of Louisville, TN, passed away on October 16, 1998 at 5:00 A.M. In his professional life, Mr. Epps was a public school administrator having served posts in Virginia and New Jersey. Raised in Knoxville, he was a 1939 graduate of Knoxville Senior High School. During World War II, Mr. Epps served as a combat airman with "the Mighty Eighth" Air Force in Europe. On June 18, 1944, his B-24 was shot down over Hamburg, Germany, and he became a POW for the duration of the War in Europe. Mr. Epps was a graduated cum laude from Emory and Henry College in 1948. He received his M.S. degree with highest honors from the University of Tennessee in 1953. He completed additional graduate studies at the University of Virginia and New York University. Mr. Epps was an Emeritus Member of the American Association of School Administrators. He held life memberships in the National Education Association and the New Jersey PTA. He also held life memberships in the Disabled American Veterans and the American Ex-Prisoners of War. He was predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.F. Epps, his son, Morris Jr., and by his brother, Kyle Epps, Sr. Wife of 54 years: Wanda Johnson Epps Mr. Epps was of the Methodist faith. A graveside funeral service with full military honors presented by the Volunteer State Veteran's Honor Guard will be conducted by the Rev. Charles Davis and the Rev. Bob Bean, at Mt. Olive Cemetery at 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 18, 1998, 2500 Maryville Pike. Visitation with the family will be at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway, Knoxville, from 6-8 PM on Saturday, October 17, 1998. Memorials may be made to the Epps Memorial Fund for Youth at Emerald Avenue United Methodist Church, North Central Street, Knoxville, TN 37917 or to the charity of your choice.

George Whatley Massey

Massey, George Whatley, age 79, passed away October 16, 1998. He was born in Lakewood, Ohio, on November 4, 1918. He attended Boys High School in Atlanta, Georgia and Georgia Tech. While in his senior year at Tech, he was called into service at the beginning of World War II. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Commander on the USS Ticonderoga and the USS Alabama. After the war, he attended Ohio State University from which he graduated in 1947 with a degree in Marketing. While there, he met Marjorie Butler and they were married in 1949. He was the father of five children. He worked for Honeywell before starting his own company, the George W. Massey Company in 1961. He was active in the Knox County Republican Party and had a great love for his country. He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur H. Massey and Daisey Irene Whatley Massey and his son Michael. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 49 years, Marge and their children Greig, Sue, Tricia, and Emily; his brother Art and sister-in-law Lori, niece and nephew Dee and Arthur, sons-in-law Mike and Jeff, and grandchildren Jeremy, Megan, Sarah, Rachel, Ben, and Aaron, and his many friends. We all loved him very much. A memorial service will be held at Lake Hills Presbyterian Church Tuesday, October 20 at 11:00 AM, Rev. James McTyre officiating. Friends may call at their home from 3:00-5:00 on Sunday October 18. In lieu of flowers, send contributions to the American Lung Association of Tennessee.
